The Pauli exclusion principle combined with interactions between fermions is a unifying basic mechanism that can give rise to quantum phases with spin order in diverse physical systems. Transition-metal ferromagnets, with isotropic ordering respecting crystallographic rotation symmetries and with a net magnetization, are a relatively common manifestation of this mechanism, leading to numerous practical applications, e.g., in spintronic information technologies. In contrast, superfluid $^3$He has been a unique and fragile manifestation, in which the spin-ordered phase is anisotropic, breaking the real-space rotation symmetries, and has zero net magnetization. The recently discovered altermagnets share the spin-ordered anisotropic zero-magnetization nature of superfluid $^3$He. Yet, altermagnets appear to be even more abundant than ferromagnets, can be robust, and are projected to offer superior scalability for spintronics compared to ferromagnets. Our Perspective revisits the decades of research of the spin-ordered anisotropic zero-magnetization phases including, besides superfluid $^3$He, also theoretically conceived counterparts in nematic electronic liquid-crystal phases. Pr-containing perovskite cobaltites exhibit unusual valence transitions, coupled to coincident structural, spin-state, and metal-insulator transitions. Heteroepitaxial strain was recently used to control these phenomena in the model (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_y$)$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ system, stabilizing a nonmagnetic insulating phase under compression (with a room-temperature valence/spin-state/metal-insulator transition) and a ferromagnetic metallic phase under tension, thus exposing a potential spin-state quantum critical point. The latter has been proposed in cobaltites and can be probed in this system as a function of a disorder-free variable (strain). We study this here via thickness-dependent strain relaxation in compressive SrLaAlO$_4$(001)/(Pr$_{0.85}$Y$_{0.15}$)$_{0.70}$Ca$_{0.30}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ epitaxial thin films to quasi-continuously probe structural, electronic, and magnetic behaviors across the nonmagnetic-insulator/ferromagnetic-metal boundary. High-resolution X-ray diffraction, electronic transport, magnetometry, polarized neutron reflectometry, and temperature-dependent magnetic force microscopy provide a detailed picture, including abundant evidence of temperature- and strain-dependent phase coexistence. One of the prime material candidates to host the axion insulator state is EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$. First-principles calculations predicted the emergence of this exotic topological phase based on the assumption of a collinear antiferromagnetic structure. However, neutron scattering measurements revealed a more intricate magnetic ground state, characterized by two coexisting magnetic wavevectors, reached by successive thermal phase transitions. The proposed high and low temperature phases were a spin helix and a state with interpenetrating helical and antiferromagnetic order, termed a broken helix, respectively. Despite its complexity, the broken helix still protects the axion state because the product of time-reversal and a rotational symmetry is preserved. Here we identify the magnetic structure associated with these two phases using a multimodal approach that combines symmetry-sensitive optical probes, scattering, and group theoretical analysis. We find that the higher temperature phase hosts a nodal structure rather than a helix, characterized by a variation of the magnetic moment amplitude from layer to layer, with the moment vanishing entirely in every third Eu layer. The lower temperature structure is similar to the broken helix, with one important difference: the relative orientation of the magnetic structure and the lattice is not fixed, resulting in an `unpinned broken helix'. As a result of the breaking of rotational symmetry, the axion phase is not generically protected. Nevertheless, we show that it can be restored if the magnetic structure is tuned with externally-applied uniaxial strain. Finally, we present a spin Hamiltonian that identifies the spin interactions needed to account for the complex magnetic order in EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO$_3$, with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced $via$ La-substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ as a model system to study the effect of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet., Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures in main text. Unconventional superconductors often feature competing orders, small superfluid density, and nodal electronic pairing. While unusual superconductivity has been proposed in the kagome metals AV3Sb5, key spectroscopic evidence has remained elusive. Here we utilize pressure-tuned (up to 1.85 GPa) and ultra-low temperature (down to 18 mK) muon spin spectroscopy to uncover the unconventional nature of superconductivity in RbV3Sb5. At ambient pressure, we detect an enhancement of the width of the internal magnetic field distribution sensed by the muon ensemble, indicative of time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order. Remarkably, the superconducting state displays nodal energy gap and a reduced superfluid density, which can be attributed to the competition with the novel charge order. Upon applying pressure, the charge-order transitions are suppressed, the superfluid density increases, and the superconducting state progressively evolves from nodal to nodeless. Once charge order is eliminated, we find a superconducting pairing state that is not only fully gapped, but also spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our results point to unprecedented tunable nodal kagome superconductivity competing with time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order and offer unique insights into the nature of the pairing state., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Employing a combination of symmetry analysis, low-energy modeling, and ab initio simulations, we predict the presence of magnetic-field-induced Weyl points close to the Fermi level in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. Depending on the relative strengths of the magnetic field and of the spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl fermions can carry a topological charge of $\pm1$ or $\pm2$, making CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ a rare realization of a double-Weyl semimetal. We further predict experimental manifestations of these Weyl points, both in bulk properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect, and in surface properties, such as the emergence of prominent Fermi arcs. Because CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ displays unconventional fully-gapped superconductivity below 30 K, our findings open a novel route to investigate the interplay between superconductivity and Weyl fermions.

UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered unconventional superconductor that has attracted much interest due to its many intriguing properties - a large residual density-of-states in the superconducting state, re-entrant superconductivity in high magnetic fields, and potentially spin-triplet topological superconductivity. Our ac calorimetry, electrical resistivity, and x-ray absorption study of UTe$_2$ under applied pressure reveals key new insights on the superconducting and magnetic states surrounding pressure-induced quantum criticality at P$_{c1}$ = 1.3 GPa. First, our specific heat data at low pressures, combined with a phenomenological model, show that pressure alters the balance between two closely competing superconducting orders. Second, near 1.5 GPa we detect two bulk transitions that trigger changes in the resistivity which are consistent with antiferromagnetic order, rather than ferromagnetism. The presence of both bulk magnetism and superconductivity at pressures above P$_{c2}$ = 1.4 GPa results in a significant temperature difference between resistively and thermodynamically determined transitions into the superconducting state, which indicates a suppression of the superconducting volume fraction by magnetic order. Third, the emergence of magnetism is accompanied by an increase in valence towards a U$^{4+}$ (5f2) state, which indicates that UTe$_2$ exhibits intermediate valence at ambient pressure. The properties of quantum materials are commonly tuned using experimental variables such as pressure, magnetic field and doping. Here we explore a different approach: irreversible, plastic deformation of single crystals. We show for the superconductor SrTiO$_3$ that compressive plastic deformation induces low-dimensional superconductivity significantly above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of undeformed samples, with evidence of superconducting correlations at temperatures two orders of magnitude above the bulk $T_c$. The superconductivity enhancement is correlated with the appearance of self-organized dislocation structures, as revealed by diffuse neutron and X-ray scattering. We also observe signatures of deformation-induced quantum-critical ferroelectric fluctuations and inhomogeneous ferroelectric order via Raman scattering. These results suggest that the strain surrounding the self-organized dislocation structures induces local ferroelectricity and quantum-critical dynamics that strongly influence $T_c$, consistent with a theory of superconductivity enhanced by soft polar fluctuations. Electronic nematic behavior has been identified and studied in iron-based superconductors for some time, particularly in the well-known BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system, where it is well-known to compete with superconductivity. On the other hand, it has been shown recently that FeSe displays a negligible effect of nematicity on superconductivity near the superconducting transition, and actual cooperation between the two orders when the system is doped with S. Recently it has also been proposed that LiFeAs undergoes a nematic transition in the superconducting state itself. Generally, we expect superconductivity to be anisotropic when it coexists with nematic order, but it is not clear under what circumstances the two orders compete or cooperate, nor how the anisotropy of the superconducting state correlates with that in the nematic state. To address this, we study a simple mean field model of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk instability together with a mixed $s,d$ pairing interaction, and identify when nematicity is enhanced or suppressed by superconductivity. We show that the competition or cooperation depends significantly on the distortion of the Fermi surface due to nematicity relative to the anisotropy of the superconducting gap function. Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $\xi$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $\xi$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nemato-elastic coupling, which may be detrimental to superconductivity.

At ambient pressure and zero field, tetragonal CeAuSb$_{2}$ hosts stripe antiferromagnetic order at $T_{N} = 6.3$ K. Here we first show via bulk thermodynamic probes and x-ray diffraction measurements that this magnetic order is connected with a structural phase transition to a superstructure which likely breaks $C_{4}$ symmetry, thus signaling nematic order. The temperature-field-pressure phase diagram of CeAuSb$_{2}$ subsequently reveals the emergence of additional ordered states under applied pressure at a multicritical point. Our phenomenological model supports the presence of a vestigial nematic phase in CeAuSb$_{2}$ akin to iron-based high-temperature superconductors; however, superconductivity, if present, remains to be discovered.

We revisit the issue of the resistivity of a two-dimensional electronic system tuned to a nematic quantum critical point (QCP), focusing on the non-trivial impact of the coupling to the acoustic phonons. Due to the unavoidable linear coupling between the electronic nematic order parameter and the lattice strain fields, long-range nematic interactions mediated by the phonons emerge in the problem. By solving the semi-classical Boltzmann equation in the presence of scattering by impurities and nematic fluctuations, we determine the temperature-dependence of the resistivity as the nematic QCP is approached. One of the main effects of the nemato-elastic coupling is to smooth the electronic non-equilibrium distribution function, making it approach the simple cosine angular dependence even when the impurity scattering is not too strong. We find that at temperatures lower than a temperature scale set by the nemato-elastic coupling, the resistivity shows the $T^2$ behavior characteristic of a Fermi liquid. This is in contrast to the $T^{4/3}$ low-temperature behavior expected for a lattice-free nematic quantum critical point. More importantly, we show that the effective resistivity exponent $\alpha_\text{eff}(T)$ in $\rho(T)-\rho_0\sim T^{\alpha_\text{eff}(T)}$ displays a pronounced temperature dependence, implying that a nematic QCP cannot generally be characterized by a simple resistivity exponent. We discuss the implications of our results to the interpretation of experimental data, particularly in the nematic superconductor FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

While unusual normal state properties, such as non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity, are commonly associated with strong quantum fluctuations, evidence for its presence inside the superconducting dome are much scarcer. In this paper, we use sensitive and minimally invasive optical magnetometry based on NV-centers in diamond to probe the doping evolution of the $T=0$ penetration depth in the electron-doped iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. A non-monotonic evolution with a pronounced peak in the vicinity of the putative magnetic QPT is found. This behavior is reminiscent to that previously seen in isovalently-substituted BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ compounds, despite the notable differences between these two systems. Whereas the latter is a very clean system that displays nodal superconductivity and a single simultaneous first-order nematic-magnetic transition above, and even somewhat below, $T_c$, the former is a significantly dirtier system with fully gapped superconductivity and split second-order nematic and magnetic transition above $T_c$. Thus our observation that such distinct systems display remarkably similar penetration depth peaks, combined with the theoretical result that a QPT alone does not ensure the existence of a peak, unveils a puzzling and seemingly universal manifestation of quantum fluctuations in the iron pnictides.

Electronic nematicity, a correlated state that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry, is observed in several layered quantum materials. In contrast to their liquid-crystal counterparts, the nematic director cannot usually point in an arbitrary direction (XY nematics), but is locked by the crystal to discrete directions (Ising nematics),resulting in strongly anisotropic fluctuations above the transition. Here, we report on the observation of nearly isotropic XY-nematic fluctuations, via elastoresistance measurements, in hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ iron-based superconductors. While for $x=0$ the nematic director points along the in-plane diagonals of the tetragonal lattice, for $x=1$ it points along the horizontal and vertical axes. Remarkably, for intermediate doping, the susceptibilities of these two symmetry-irreducible nematic channels display comparable Curie-Weiss behavior, thus revealing a nearly XY-nematic state. This opens a new route to assess this elusive electronic quantum liquid-crystalline state, which is a candidate to host unique phenomena not present in the Ising-nematic case., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The response of superconductors to controlled introduction of point-like disorder is an important tool to probe their microscopic electronic collective behavior. In the case of iron-based superconductors (IBS), magnetic fluctuations presumably play an important role in inducing high temperature superconductivity. In some cases, these two seemingly incompatible orders coexist microscopically. Therefore, understanding how this unique coexistence state is affected by disorder can provide important information about the microscopic mechanisms involved. In one of the most studied pnictide family, hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (BaK122), this coexistence occurs over a wide range of doping levels, 0.16~$\lesssim x \lesssim $~0.25. We used relativistic 2.5 MeV electrons to induce vacancy-interstitial (Frenkel) pairs that act as efficient point-like scattering centers. Upon increasing dose of irradiation, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases dramatically. In the absence of nodes in the order parameter this provides a strong support for a sign-changing $s_{\pm}$ pairing. Simultaneously, in the normal state, there is a strong violation of the Matthiessen's rule and a decrease (surprisingly, at the same rate as $T_c$) of the magnetic transition temperature $T_{sm}$, which indicates the itinerant nature of the long-range magnetic order. Comparison of the hole-doped BaK122 with electron-doped Ba(Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (FeCo122) with similar $T_{sm}\sim$110~K, $x=$0.02, reveals significant differences in the normal states, with no apparent Matthiessen's rule violation above $T_{sm}$ on the electron-doped side. We interpret these results in terms of the distinct impact of impurity scattering on the competing itinerant antiferromagnetic and $s_{\pm}$ superconducting orders.

We report wide-doping-range ($8 \times 10^{17}$ to $4 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ Hall electron density) low temperature specific heat measurements on single crystal SrTiO$_3$:Nb, correlated with electronic transport data and tight-binding modeling. Lattice dynamic contributions to specific heat are shown to be well understood, albeit with unusual sensitivity to doping, likely related to the behavior of soft modes. Electronic contributions to specific heat provide effective masses that increase substantially, from $1.8$ to $4.8 m_e$, across the two SrTiO$_3$ Lifshitz transitions. It is shown that this behavior can be quantitatively reconciled with quantum oscillation data and calculated band structure, establishing a remarkably doping-independent mass enhancement factor of $2.0$. Most importantly, with the doping-dependent $T^2$ resistivity prefactor and Sommerfeld coefficient known, Kadowaki-Woods scaling has been tested over the entire doping range probed. Despite classic Fermi liquid behavior in electronic specific heat, standard Kadowaki-Woods scaling is dramatically violated, highlighting the need for new theoretical descriptions of $T^2$ resistivity in SrTiO$_3$., Comment: revised version accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review Materials; main text + supplementary material

Electrical control of magnetism is a long-standing goal in physics and technology, recently developed electrolyte gating techniques providing a promising route to realization. Validating a recent theoretical prediction, here we demonstrate large enhancement of electrostatic modulation of ferromagnetic order in ion-gel-gated ultrathin La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ by thickness-tuning to the brink of a magnetic percolation transition. Application of only 3-4 V then drives a transition from a short-range-ordered insulator to a robust long-range ferromagnetic metal, realizing giant electrostatic Curie temperature modulation over a 150 K window. In operando polarized neutron reflectometry confirms gate-controlled ferromagnetism, also demonstrating unusually deep penetration of induced magnetization, in further agreement with theory., Comment: 3 figures

Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. While several experiments have probed nematic fluctuations, they have been restricted to uniform or momentum averaged fluctuations. Here, we investigate the behavior of finite-momentum nematic fluctuations by utilizing the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. We determine the nematic correlation length and find that it sharply changes its $T$-dependence at $T_c$, revealing a strong connection between nematicity and superconductivity.

High magnetic fields induce a pronounced in-plane electronic anisotropy in the tetragonal antiferromagnetic metal CeRhIn$_{5}$ at $H^{*} \gtrsim 30$ T for fields $\simeq 20^{\mathrm{o}}$ off the $c$-axis. Here we investigate the response of the underlying crystal lattice in magnetic fields to $45$ T via high-resolution dilatometry. Within the antiferromagnetic phase of CeRhIn$_{5}$, a finite magnetic field component in the tetragonal $ab$-plane explicitly breaks the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) symmetry of the lattice well below $H^{*}$ revealing a finite nematic susceptibility at low fields. A modest magnetostriction anomaly, $dL/L = -1.8 \times 10^{-6}$, at $H^{*} = 31$ T hence presumably marks the crossover to a fluctuating nematic phase with large electronic nematic susceptibility. Magnetostriction quantum oscillations confirm a Fermi surface change at $H^*$ with the emergence of new orbits. By analyzing the field-induced change in the crystal-field ground state, we conclude that the in-plane Ce $4f$ hybridization is enhanced at $H^*$, carrying the in-plane $f$-electron anisotropy to the Fermi surface. We argue that the nematic behavior observed in this prototypical heavy-fermion material is of electronic origin, and is driven by the hybridization between $4f$ and conduction electrons.

We have systematically studied the effects of in-plane uniaxial pressure $p$ on the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in many iron-based superconductors. The change of $T_c$ with $p$ is composed of linear and nonlinear components. The latter can be described as a quadratic term plus a much smaller fourth-order term. In contrast to the linear component, the nonlinear $p$ dependence of $T_c$ displays a pronounced in-plane anisotropy, which is similar to the anisotropic response of the resistivity to $p$. As a result, it can be attributed to the coupling between the superconducting and nematic orders, in accordance with the expectations of a phenomenological Landau theory. Our results provide direct evidences for the interplay between nematic fluctuations and superconductivity, which may be a common behavior in iron-based superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The electric field gradient (EFG) tensor at the $^{75}$As site couples to the orbital occupations of the As p-orbitals and is a sensitive probe of local nematicity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We use nuclear magnetic resonance to measure the nuclear quadrupolar splittings and find that the EFG asymmetry responds linearly to the presence of a strain field in the paramagnetic phase. We extract the nematic susceptibility from the slope of this linear response as a function of temperature and find that it diverges near the structural transition in agreement with other measures of the bulk nematic susceptibility. Magnetism is widely considered to be a key ingredient of unconventional superconductivity. In contrast to cuprate high-temperature superconductors, antiferromagnetism in Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) is characterized by a pair of magnetic propagation vectors. Consequently, three different types of magnetic order are possible. Of theses, only stripe-type spin-density wave (SSDW) and spin-charge-density wave (SCDW) orders have been observed. A realization of the proposed spin-vortex crystal (SVC) order is noticeably absent. We report a magnetic phase consistent with the hedgehog variation of SVC order in Ni- and Co-doped CaKFe4As4 based on thermodynamic, transport, structural and local magnetic probes combined with symmetry analysis. The exotic SVC phase is stabilized by the reduced symmetry of the CaKFe4As4 structure. Our results suggest that the possible magnetic ground states in FeSCs have very similar energies, providing an enlarged configuration space for magnetic fluctuations to promote high-temperature superconductivity., Comment: Updated version including supplemental material

The iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a rich phase diagram reflecting a complex interplay between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom [1-4]. The nematic state observed in many of these compounds epitomizes this complexity, by entangling a real-space anisotropy in the spin fluctuation spectrum with ferro-orbital order and an orthorhombic lattice distortion [5-7]. A more subtle and much less explored facet of the interplay between these degrees of freedom arises from the sizable spin-orbit coupling present in these systems, which translates anisotropies in real space into anisotropies in spin space. Here, we present a new technique enabling nuclear magnetic resonance under precise tunable strain control, which reveals that upon application of a tetragonal symmetry-breaking strain field, the magnetic fluctuation spectrum in the paramagnetic phase of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ also acquires an anisotropic response in spin-space. Our results unveil a hitherto uncharted internal spin structure of the nematic order parameter, indicating that similar to liquid crystals, electronic nematic materials may offer a novel route to magneto-mechanical control., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Applied pressure drives the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ towards a quantum critical point that becomes hidden by a dome of unconventional superconductivity. Magnetic fields suppress this superconducting dome, unveiling the quantum phase transition of local character. Here, we show that $5\%$ magnetic substitution at the Ce site in CeRhIn$_{5}$, either by Nd or Gd, induces a zero-field magnetic instability inside the superconducting state. This magnetic state not only should have a different ordering vector than the high-field local-moment magnetic state, but it also competes with the latter, suggesting that a spin-density-wave phase is stabilized in zero field by Nd and Gd impurities - similarly to the case of Ce$_{0.95}$Nd$_{0.05}$CoIn$_{5}$. Supported by model calculations, we attribute this spin-density wave instability to a magnetic-impurity driven condensation of the spin excitons that form inside the unconventional superconducting state.

Spin-driven nematicity, or the breaking of the point-group symmetry of the lattice without long-range magnetic order, is clearly quite important in iron-based superconductors. From a symmetry point of view, nematic order can be described as a coherent locking of spin fluctuations in two interpenetrating N\'eel sublattices with ensuing nearest-neighbor bond order and an absence of static magnetism. Here, we argue that the low-temperature state of the recently discovered superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O is a strong candidate for a more exotic form of spin-driven nematic order, in which fluctuations occurring in four N\'eel sublattices promote both nearest- and next-nearest neighbor bond order. We develop a low-energy field theory of this state and show that it can have, as a function of temperature, up to two separate bond-order phase transitions -- namely, one that breaks rotation symmetry and one that breaks reflection and translation symmetries of the lattice. The resulting state has an orthorhombic lattice distortion, an intra-unit-cell charge density wave, and no long-range magnetic order, all consistent with reported measurements of the low-temperature phase of BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O. We then use density functional theory calculations to extract exchange parameters to confirm that the model is applicable to BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

Nematic order is ubiquitous in liquid crystals and is characterized by a rotational symmetry breaking in an otherwise uniform liquid. Recently a similar phenomenon has been observed in some electronic phases of quantum materials related to high temperature superconductivity, particularly in the Fe-based superconductors. While several experiments have probed nematic fluctuations, they have been primarily restricted to the uniform nematic susceptibility, i.e. q = 0 fluctuations. Here, we investigate the behavior of finite-momentum nematic fluctuations by measuring transverse acoustic phonon modes with wavelengths of up to 25 unit cells in the prototypical Fe-based compound Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. While the slope of the phonon dispersion gives information about the uniform nematic susceptibility, deviations from this linear behavior at finite but small wave-vectors are attributed to finite-momentum nematic fluctuations. Surprisingly, these non-zero q fluctuations lead to a softening of the phonon mode below the superconducting transition temperature, in contrast to the behavior of the phonon velocity at q = 0, which increases below $T_c$. Our work not only establishes a sound method to probe long wavelength nematic fluctuations, but also sheds light on the unique interplay between nematicity and superconductivity in Fe-based compounds.

We report the experimental details of how mechanical detwinning can be implemented in tandem with high sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and use this setup to measure the in-plane anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.048$. The anisotropy reaches a maximum of 30\% at $T_{N}$, and the recovery data reveal that the glassy behavior of the spin fluctuations present in the twinned state persist in the fully detwinned crystal. The remarkable robustness of high-temperature superconductors against disorder remains a controversial obstacle towards the elucidation of their pairing state. Indeed, experiments report a weak suppression rate of the transition temperature $T_{c}$ with disorder, significantly smaller than the universal value predicted by extensions of the conventional theory of dirty superconductors. However, in many high-$T_{c}$ compounds, superconductivity appears near a putative magnetic quantum critical point, suggesting that quantum fluctuations, which suppress coherent electronic spectral weight, may also promote unconventional pairing. Here we investigate theoretically the impact of disorder on such a quantum critical pairing state, considering the coupling of impurities both to the low-energy electronic states and to the pairing interaction itself. We find a significant reduction in the suppression rate of $T_{c}$ with disorder near the magnetic quantum critical point, shedding new light on the nature of unconventional superconductivity in correlated materials., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy is studied in strain-detwinned single crystals of FeSe. In contrast to other iron-based superconductors, FeSe does not develop long-range magnetic order below the nematic/structural transition at $T_{s}\approx$90~K. This allows for the disentanglement of the contributions to the resistivity anisotropy due to nematic and magnetic orders. Comparing direct transport and elastoresistivity measurements, we extract the intrinsic resistivity anisotropy of strain-free samples. The anisotropy peaks slightly below $T_{s}$ and decreases to nearly zero on cooling down to the superconducting transition. This behavior is consistent with a scenario in which the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in FeSe is dominated by inelastic scattering by anisotropic spin fluctuations.

Nematic order resulting from the partial melting of density-waves has been proposed as the mechanism to explain nematicity in iron-based superconductors. An outstanding question, however, is whether the microscopic electronic model for these systems -- the multi-orbital Hubbard model -- displays such an ordered state as its leading instability. In contrast to usual electronic instabilities, such as magnetic and charge order, this fluctuation-driven phenomenon cannot be captured by the standard RPA method. Here, by including fluctuations beyond RPA in the multi-orbital Hubbard model, we derive its nematic susceptibility and contrast it with its ferro-orbital order susceptibility, showing that its leading instability is the spin-driven nematic phase. Our results also demonstrate the primary role played by the $d_{xy}$ orbital in driving the nematic transition, and reveal that high-energy magnetic fluctuations are essential to stabilize nematic order in the absence of magnetic order., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present evidence for nuclear spin-lattice relaxation driven by glassy nematic fluctuations in isovalent P-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. Both the $^{75}$As and $^{31}$P sites exhibit stretched-exponential relaxation similar to the electron-doped systems. By comparing the hyperfine fields and the relaxation rates at these sites we find that the As relaxation cannot be explained solely in terms of magnetic spin fluctuations. We demonstrate that nematic fluctuations couple to the As nuclear quadrupolar moment and can explain the excess relaxation. These results suggest that glassy nematic dynamics are a universal phenomenon in the iron-based superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

In most magnetically-ordered iron pnictides, the magnetic moments lie in the FeAs planes, parallel to the modulation direction of the spin stripes. However, recent experiments in hole-doped iron pnictides have observed a reorientation of the magnetic moments from in-plane to out-of-plane. Interestingly, this reorientation is accompanied by a change in the magnetic ground state from a stripe antiferromagnet to a tetragonal non-uniform magnetic configuration. Motivated by these recent observations, here we investigate the origin of the spin anisotropy in iron pnictides using an itinerant microscopic electronic model that respects all the symmetry properties of a single FeAs plane. We find that the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the Hund's rule coupling can account for the observed spin anisotropies, including the spin reorientation in hole-doped pnictides, without the need to invoke orbital or nematic order. Our calculations also reveal an asymmetry between the magnetic ground states of electron- and hole-doped compounds, with only the latter displaying tetragonal magnetic states., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Elucidating the nature of the magnetic ground state of iron-based superconductors is of paramount importance in unveiling the mechanism behind their high temperature superconductivity. Until recently, it was thought that superconductivity emerges only from an orthorhombic antiferromagnetic stripe phase, which can in principle be described in terms of either localized or itinerant spins. However, we recently reported that tetragonal symmetry is restored inside the magnetically ordered state of a hole-doped BaFe2As2. This observation was interpreted as indirect evidence of a new double-Q magnetic structure, but alternative models of orbital order could not be ruled out. Here, we present Mossbauer data that show unambiguously that half of the iron sites in this tetragonal phase are non-magnetic, establishing conclusively the existence of a novel magnetic ground state with a non-uniform magnetization that is inconsistent with localized spins. We show that this state is naturally explained as the interference between two spin-density waves, demonstrating the itinerant character of the magnetism of these materials and the primary role played by magnetic over orbital degrees of freedom., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Recent experiments in optimally hole-doped iron arsenides have revealed a novel magnetically ordered ground state that preserves tetragonal symmetry, consistent with either a charge-spin density wave (CSDW), which displays a non-uniform magnetization, or a spin-vortex crystal (SVC), which displays a non-collinear magnetization. Here we show that, similarly to the partial melting of the usual stripe antiferromagnet into a nematic phase, either of these phases can also melt in two stages. As a result, intermediate paramagnetic phases with vestigial order appears: a checkerboard charge density-wave for the CSDW ground state, characterized by an Ising-like order parameter, and a remarkable spin-vorticity density-wave for the SVC ground state -- a triplet d-density wave characterized by a vector chiral order parameter. Motivated by recent experiments in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ {[}A. E. B\"ohmer \textit{et al}, to be published{]}, we analyze the type of spin-density wave (SDW) order in doped iron-pnictides and the discontinuities of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in the coexistence phase with SDW magnetism. By tracking the magnetic transition line $T_{N}(x)$ towards optimal doping within an itinerant fermionic model, we find a sequence of transitions from the stripe-orthorhombic ($C_{2}$) SDW order to the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) order and then back to the $C_{2}$ order. We argue that the superconducting $T_{c}$ has two discontinuities -- it jumps to a smaller value upon entering the coexistence region with the $C_{4}$ magnetic phase, and then jumps to a larger value inside the SDW state when it crosses the boundary between the $C_{4}$ and $C_{2}$ SDW orders. The possible existence of a sign-changing gap symmetry in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$-derived superconductors (SC) has been an exciting topic of research in the last few years. To further investigate this subject we combine Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and pressure-dependent transport measurements to investigate magnetic pair-breaking effects on BaFe$_{1.9}M_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($M=$ Mn, Co, Cu, and Ni) single crystals. An ESR signal, indicative of the presence of localized magnetic moments, is observed only for $M=$ Cu and Mn compounds, which display very low SC transition temperature ($T_{c}$) and no SC, respectively. From the ESR analysis assuming the absence of bottleneck effects, the microscopic parameters are extracted to show that this reduction of $T_{c}$ cannot be accounted by the Abrikosov-Gorkov pair-breaking expression for a sign-preserving gap function. Our results reveal an unconventional spin- and pressure-dependent pair-breaking effect and impose strong constraints on the pairing symmetry of these materials.

We show that a small number of intentionally introduced defects can be used as a spectroscopic tool to amplify quasiparticle interference in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$, that we measure by scanning tunneling spectroscopic imaging. We show from the momentum and energy dependence of the quasiparticle interference that Fermi surface nesting is inconsequential to charge density wave formation in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$. We demonstrate that by combining quasiparticle interference data with additional knowledge of the quasiparticle band structure from angle resolved photoemission measurements, one can extract the wavevector and energy dependence of the important electronic scattering processes thereby obtaining direct information both about the fermiology and the interactions. In 2H-NbSe$_{2}$, we use this combination to show that the important near-Fermi-surface electronic physics is dominated by the coupling of the quasiparticles to soft mode phonons at a wave vector different from the CDW ordering wave vector., Comment: Main text: 13 pages, 4 figures (single column). The in-plane London penetration depth, $\Delta\lambda(T)$, was measured using a tunnel diode resonator technique in single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with doping levels $x$ ranging from heavily underdoped, $x$=0.16 ($T_{c}$=7~K) to nearly optimally doped, $x$= 0.34 ($T_{c}=$39 K). Exponential saturation of $\Delta\lambda(T)$ in the $T\to0$ limit is found in optimally doped samples, with the superfluid density $\rho_{s}(T)\equiv(\lambda(0)/\lambda(T))^{2}$ quantitatively described by a self-consistent $\gamma$-model with two nodeless isotropic superconducting gaps. As the doping level is decreased towards the extreme end of the superconducting dome at $x$=0.16, the low-temperature behavior of $\Delta\lambda(T)$ becomes non-exponential and best described by the power-law $\Delta\lambda(T)\propto T^{2}$, characteristic of strongly anisotropic gaps. The change between the two regimes happens within the range of coexisting magnetic/nematic order and superconductivity, $x<0.25$, and is accompanied by a rapid rise in the absolute value of $\Delta\lambda(T)$ with underdoping. This effect, characteristic of the competition between superconductivity and other ordered states, is very similar to but of significantly smaller magnitude than what is observed in the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds. Our study suggests that the competition between superconductivity and magnetic/nematic order in hole-doped compounds is weaker than in electron-doped compounds, and that the anisotropy of the superconducting state in the underdoped iron pnictides is a consequence of the anisotropic changes in the pairing interaction and in the gap function promoted by both magnetic and nematic long-range order.

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we show that the onset of superconductivity in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ coincides with a crossover from well-defined spin waves to overdamped and diffusive spin excitations. This crossover occurs despite the presence of long-range stripe antiferromagnetic order for samples in a compositional range from x=0.04-0.055, and is a consequence of the shrinking spin-density wave gap and a corresponding increase in the particle-hole (Landau) damping. The latter effect is captured by a simple itinerant model relating Co doping to changes in the hot spots of the Fermi surface. We argue that the overdamped spin fluctuations provide a pairing mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.

Although the existence of nematic order in iron-based superconductors is now a well-established experimental fact, its origin remains controversial. Nematic order breaks the discrete lattice rotational symmetry by making the $x$ and $y$ directions in the Fe plane non-equivalent. This can happen because of (i) a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition, (ii) a spontaneous breaking of an orbital symmetry, or (iii) a spontaneous development of an Ising-type spin-nematic order - a magnetic state that breaks rotational symmetry but preserves time-reversal symmetry. The Landau theory of phase transitions dictates that the development of one of these orders should immediately induce the other two, making the origin of nematicity a physics realization of a "chicken and egg problem". The three scenarios are, however, quite different from a microscopic perspective. While in the structural scenario lattice vibrations (phonons) play the dominant role, in the other two scenarios electronic correlations are responsible for the nematic order. In this review, we argue that experimental and theoretical evidence strongly points to the electronic rather than phononic mechanism, placing the nematic order in the class of correlation-driven electronic instabilities, like superconductivity and density-wave transitions. We discuss different microscopic models for nematicity in the iron pnictides, and link nematicity to other ordered states of the global phase diagram of these materials -- magnetism and superconductivity. In the magnetic model nematic order pre-empts stripe-type magnetic order, and the same interaction which favors nematicity also gives rise to an unconventional $s^{+-}$ superconductivity. We report Raman scattering measurement of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.04) single crystals. The driving forces behind electronic nematicity in the iron pnictides remain hotly debated. We use atomic-resolution variable-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy to provide the first direct visual evidence that local electronic nematicity and unidirectional antiferroic (stripe) fluctuations persist to temperatures almost twice the nominal structural ordering temperature in the parent pnictide NaFeAs. Low-temperature spectroscopic imaging of nematically-ordered NaFeAs shows anisotropic electronic features that are not observed for isostructural, non-nematic LiFeAs. The local electronic features are shown to arise from scattering interference around crystalline defects in NaFeAs, and their spatial anisotropy is a direct consequence of the structural and stripe-magnetic order present at low temperature. We show that the anisotropic features persist up to high temperatures in the nominally tetragonal phase of the crystal. The spatial distribution and energy dependence of the anisotropy at high temperatures is explained by the persistence of large amplitude, short-range, unidirectional, antiferroic (stripe) fluctuations, indicating that strong density wave fluctuations exist and couple to near-Fermi surface electrons even far from the structural and density wave phase boundaries., Comment: Main Text: 12 pages, 6 figures. We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 Figures. The phase diagram of the iron arsenides is dominated by a magnetic and a structural phase transition, which need to be suppressed in order for superconductivity to appear. The proximity between the two transition temperature lines indicates correlation between these two phases, whose nature remains unsettled. Here, we find a scaling relation between nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and shear modulus data in the tetragonal phase of electron-doped $\mathrm{Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}}$ compounds. The concept of an electronically-driven breaking of the rotational symmetry of a crystal, without involving magnetic order, has found experimental support in several systems, from semiconductor heterostructures and ruthenates, to cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors. In the pnictide BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, such an "electronic nematic state" appears above the magnetic transition dome, over a temperature range that can be controlled by external strain. Here, by measuring the in-plane resistivity anisotropy, we probe the electronic anisotropy of this material over the entire nematic/magnetic dome, whose end points coincide with the optimal superconducting transition temperatures. Counter-intuitively, we find that, unlike other materials, the resistivity anisotropy in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ changes sign across the doping phase diagram, even though the signs of the magnetic, nematic, and orthorhombic order parameters are kept fixed. This behavior is explained by the Fermi surface reconstruction in the magnetic phase and spin-fluctuation scattering in the nematic phase. The unique behavior of the transport anisotropy unveils that the primary role is played by magnetic scattering in the normal state transport properties of the iron pnictides, suggesting a close connection between magnetism, nematicity, and unconventional superconductivity.

Using electronic Raman spectroscopy, we report direct measurements of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of strain-free Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x})_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. The strong enhancement of the Raman response at low temperatures unveils an underlying charge nematic state that extends to superconducting compositions and which has hitherto remained unnoticed. Comparison between the extracted charge nematic susceptibility and the elastic modulus allows us to disentangle the charge contribution to the nematic instability, and to show that charge nematic fluctuations are weakly coupled to the lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures (including supplemental material)

We investigate the possibility of multi-band superconductivity in SrTiO$_{3}$ films and interfaces using a two-dimensional two-band model. In the undoped compound, one of the bands is occupied whereas the other is empty. As the chemical potential shifts due to doping by negative charge carriers or application of an electric field, the second band becomes occupied, giving rise to a strong enhancement of the transition temperature and a sharp feature in the gap functions, which is manifested in the local density of states spectrum. By comparing our results with tunneling experiments in Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$, we find that intra-band pairing dominates over inter-band pairing, unlike other known multi-band superconductors. Given the similarities with the value of the transition temperature and with the band structure of LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures, we speculate that the superconductivity observed in SrTiO$_{3}$ interfaces may be similar in nature to that of bulk SrTiO$_{3}$, involving multiple bands with distinct electronic occupations., Comment: revised expanded version
