The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is a project to map $\sim9300$ sq deg of the sky using twelve bands (seven narrow and five broadbands). Observations are performed with the T80-South telescope, a robotic telescope located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. The survey footprint consists of several large contiguous areas, including fields at high and low galactic latitudes, and towards the Magellanic Clouds. S-PLUS uses fixed exposure times to reach point source depths of about $21$ mag in the $griz$ and $20$ mag in the $u$ and the narrow filters. This paper describes the S-PLUS Data Release 4 (DR4), which includes calibrated images and derived catalogues for over 3000 sq deg, covering the aforementioned area. The catalogues provide multi-band photometry performed with the tools \texttt{DoPHOT} and \texttt{SExtractor} -- point spread function (\PSF) and aperture photometry, respectively. In addition to the characterization, we also present the scientific potential of the data. We use statistical tools to present and compare the photometry obtained through different methods. Overall we find good agreement between the different methods, with a slight systematic offset of 0.05\,mag between our \PSF and aperture photometry. We show that the astrometry accuracy is equivalent to that obtained in previous S-PLUS data releases, even in very crowded fields where photometric extraction is challenging. The depths of main survey (MS) photometry for a minimum signal-to-noise ratio $S/N = 3$ reach from $\sim19.5$ for the bluer bands to $\sim21.5$ mag on the red. The range of magnitudes over which accurate \PSF photometry is obtained is shallower, reaching $\sim19$ to $\sim20.5$ mag depending on the filter. Small rocky planets, as well as larger planets that suffered extensive volatile loss, tend to be drier and have thinner atmospheres as compared to Earth. Such planets probably outnumber worlds better endowed with volatiles, being the most common habitable planets. For the subgroup of fast rotators following eccentric orbits, atmospheres suffer radiative forcing and their heat capacity provides a method for gauging atmospheric thickness and surface conditions. We further explore the model presented in a previous paper and apply it to real and hypothetical exoplanets in the habitable zone of various classes of stars, simulating atmospheric and orbital characteristics. For planetary eccentricities e ~0.3, the forcing-induced hypothetical temperature variation would reach ~80 K for airless planets and ~10 K for planets with substantial atmospheres. For Kepler-186 f and Kepler-442 b, assuming e ~0.1, temperature variations can reach ~24 K. We also consider habitable exomoons in circular orbits around gas giants within the habitable zone, which suffer radiative forcing due to their epicyclic motion. We study several combinations of parameters for the characterization of planets (mass, eccentricity and semi-major axis) and exomoons (mass, orbital radius, albedo and atmospheric characteristics) for different stellar types. For e ~0.3, exomoon temperature varies up to ~90 K, while for ~0.6 variations can reach ~200 K. Such exomoons may plausibly retain their volatiles by continued volcanic activity fueled by tidal dissipation. Although currently undetectable, such effects might be within reach of future Extremely Large Telescope-class telescopes and space missions with mid-infrared and coronagraphic capabilities., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures and 7 tables

Metal-poor stars are key to our understanding of the early stages of chemical evolution in the Universe. New multi-filter surveys, such as the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), are greatly advancing our ability to select low-metallicity stars. In this work, we analyse the chemodynamical properties and ages of 522 metal-poor candidates selected from the S-PLUS data release 3. About 92% of these stars were confirmed to be metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\leq -1$) based on previous medium-resolution spectroscopy. We calculated the dynamical properties of a subsample containing 241 stars, using the astrometry from Gaia Data Release 3. Stellar ages are estimated by a Bayesian isochronal method formalized in this work. We analyse the metallicity distribution of these metal-poor candidates separated into different subgroups of total velocity, dynamical properties, and ages. Our results are used to propose further restrictions to optimize the selection of metal-poor candidates in S-PLUS. The proposed astrometric selection ($\mathrm{parallax}>0.85$ mas) is the one that returns the highest fraction of extremely metal-poor stars (16.3% have [Fe/H] $\leq -3$); the combined selection provides the highest fraction of very metal-poor stars (91.0% have [Fe/H] $\leq -2$), whereas the dynamical selection (eccentricity > 0.35 and diskness < 0.75) is better for targetting metal-poor (99.5% have [Fe/H] $\leq -1$). Using only S-PLUS photometric selections, it is possible to achieve selection fractions of 15.6%, 88.5% and 98.3% for metallicities below $-$3, $-$2 and $-$1, respectively. We also show that it is possible to use S-PLUS to target metal-poor stars in halo substructures such as Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus, Sequoia, Thamnos and the Helmi stream., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures. The massive stars that survive the phase of red supergiants (RSGs) spend the rest of their life in extremity. Their unstable atmospheres facilitate the formation and episodic ejection of shells that alter the stellar appearance and surroundings. In the present study, we revise the evolutionary state of eight hypergiants in the Magellanic Clouds, four of early-A type and four of FG type, and complement the short list of the eruptive post-RSGs termed as yellow hypergiants (YHGs). We refine the outdated temperatures and luminosities of the stars by means of high-resolution spectroscopy with FEROS. The A-type stars are suggested to be in their early, post-main sequence phase, showing spectrophotometric characteristics of redward evolving supergiants. On the other hand, the FG-type stars manifest themselves through the enhanced atmospheric activity that is traced by emission filling in H$\alpha$ and the dynamical modulation of the low-excitation BaII line. Of these stars, the dusty HD269723 is suggested to have recently departed from a cool phase. We identify double-peaked emission in the FEROS data of HD269953 that emerges from an orbiting disk-hosting companion. The highlight of the study is an episode of enhanced mass loss of HD271182 that manifests as a dimming event in the lightcurve and renders the star "modest" analogue to $\rho$ Cas. The luminosity $\log(L/L_{\odot})= 5.6$ of HD271182 can serve as an updated threshold for the luminosity of stars exhibiting a post-RSG evolution in the Large Magellanic Cloud., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables. We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential to identify low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. SPEEM is a tool to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars, using the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows the identification of metal-poor star candidates suitable for spectroscopic follow-up. SPEEM consists of a series of machine learning models which uses a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures Teff between 4\,800 K and 9\,000 K; $\log g$ between 1.0 and 4.5, and $-3.1<[Fe/H]<+0.5$. The performance of the pipeline has been tested with a sample of stars observed by the LAMOST survey within the same parameter range. The average differences between the parameters of a sample of stars observed with SEGUE and J-PLUS, which were obtained with the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline and SPEEM, respectively, are $\Delta Teff\sim 41$ K, $\Delta \log g\sim 0.11$ dex, and $\Delta [Fe/H]\sim 0.09$ dex. A sample of 177 stars have been identified as new candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$ and 11 of them have been observed with the ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. The spectroscopic analysis confirms that $64\%$ of stars have $[Fe/H]<-2.5$, including one new star with $[Fe/H]<-3.0$. SPEEM in combination with the J-PLUS filter system has shown the potential to estimate the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, $\log g$, and [Fe/H]). The spectroscopic validation of the candidates shows that SPEEM yields a success rate of $64\%$ on the identification of very metal-poor star candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Journal

The tidal interaction of a Be star with a binary companion forms two spiral arms that cause orbital modulation of the Be disc structure. The aim of this work is to identify observables in which this modulation is apparent. The structure of a Be disc in a coplanar circular binary system is computed with a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code, and a radiation transfer code calculates the spectral energy distribution. Line depolarisation was confirmed, with polarisation profiles nearly reverse to emission-line profiles. The continuum flux maximizes for pole-on discs, but photometric variability maximizes for edge-on discs. The linear polarisation exhibits one or two maxima per orbital cycle. While polarisation variability in visible passbands is important only at low inclinations, infrared bands may demonstrate high orbital variability even at large inclinations. More evident is the modulation in the polarisation angle (PA) for low inclinations. The latter can be used to track azimuthal asymmetries for pole-on discs, where the spectroscopic variability in the violet-to-red (V/R) emission-component ratio disappears. PA reversals coincide with phases where V/R=1, tracking lines of sight directed towards regions where the approaching and receding arms overlap. Continuum flux and polarisation are mostly in phase for neighbouring wavelength regions. It is suggested that studies of non-symmetric discs distorted by tidal forces from a secondary star may be used to study disc variabilities of other origins., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

B[e] Supergiants are luminous evolved massive stars. The mass-loss during this phase creates a complex circumstellar environment with atomic, molecular, and dusty regions usually found in rings or disk-like structures. For a better comprehension of the mechanisms behind the formation of these rings, detailed knowledge about their structure and dynamics is essential. To address that, we obtained high-resolution optical and near-infrared spectra for 8 selected Galactic B[e] Supergiants, for which CO emission has been detected. Assuming Keplerian rotation for the disk, we combine the kinematics obtained from the CO bands in the near-IR with those obtained by fitting the forbidden emission [OI] $\lambda$5577, [OI] $\lambda\lambda$6300,6363, and [CaII] $\lambda\lambda$7291,7323 lines in the optical to probe the disk structure. We find that the emission originates from multiple ring structures around all B[e] Supergiants, with each one of them displaying a unique combination of rings regardless of whether the object is part of a binary system. The confirmed binaries display spectroscopic variations of their line intensities and profiles as well as photometric variability, whereas the ring structures around the single stars are stable., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Prompted by peculiar spectroscopic variability observed in SDSS/APOGEE $H$-band spectra, we monitored the Be star HD 55606 using optical spectroscopy and found that it is an exotic double-lined spectroscopic binary (SB2) consisting of a Be star and a hot, compact companion that is probably an OB subdwarf (sdOB) star. Motion of the sdOB star is traced by its impact on the strong He~I lines, observed as radial velocity ($V_{r}$) variable, double-peaked emission profiles with narrow central absorption cores. Weak He II 4686 {\AA} absorption associated with the companion star is detected in most spectra. Use of the emission peaks of low-ionization emission lines to trace the Be star $V_{r}$ and the He I lines to trace the companion star $V_{r}$ yields a circular orbital solution with a 93.8-day period and masses of $M_{\rm Be}=6.2$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ and $M_{\rm sdOB}=0.9$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ in the case of $i=80^{\circ}$. HD 55606 exhibits a variety of phase-locked variability, including the development of shell lines twice per orbit. The shell phases coincide with variation in the double emission peak separations, and both forms of variability are likely caused by a two-armed spiral density perturbation in the Be disk. The intensity ratios of the double emission peaks are also phase-locked, possibly indicating heating by the sdOB star of the side of the Be disk facing it. HD 55606 is a new member of the growing sample of Be+sdOB binaries, in which the Be star's rapid rotation and ability to form a disk can be attributed to past mass transfer.

B[e] supergiants (SGs) are massive post-main-sequence stars, surrounded by a complex circumstellar (CS) environment. The aim of this work is to investigate the structure and kinematics of the CS disc of the B[e] SG LHA 120-S 35. We used high-resolution optical spectra obtained in different years to model the forbidden emission lines and determine the kinematical properties of their line-forming regions, assuming Keplerian rotation. We also used low-resolution near-infrared (IR) spectra to explore the variability of molecular emission. LHA 120-S 35 displays spectral variability in both optical and IR regions. The P-Cygni line profiles of H I, as well as those of Fe II and O I, suggest the presence of a strong bipolar clumped wind. We distinguish density enhancements in the P-Cygni absorption component of the first Balmer lines, which show variations in both velocity and strength. The P-Cygni profile emission component is double-peaked, indicating the presence of a rotating CS disc. We also observe line-profile variations in the permitted and forbidden features of Fe II and O I. In the IR, we detect variations in the intensity of the H I emission lines as well as in the emission of the CO band-heads. Moreover, we find that the profiles of each [Ca II] and [O I] emission lines contain contributions from spatially different (complete or partial) rings. Globally, we find evidence of detached multi-ring structures, revealing density variations along the disc. We suggest that LHA 120-S 35 has passed through the red-supergiant (RSG) phase and evolves back bluewards in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The formation of the complex CS structure could be the result of the wind-wind interactions of the post-RSG wind with the previously ejected material from the RSG. However, the presence of a binary companion can not be excluded. The Galactic object MWC 137 was suggested to belong to the group of B[e] supergiants. However, with its large-scale optical bipolar ring nebula and the high velocity jet and knots, it is a rather atypical representative of this class. We performed multi-wavelength observations spreading from the optical to the radio regime. Based on optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopic data we found that the northern parts of the large-scale nebula are predominantly blue-shifted, while the southern regions appear mostly red-shifted. We developed a geometrical model consisting of two double-cones. While various observational features can be approximated with such a scenario, the observed velocity pattern is more complex. Using near-infrared integral-field unit spectroscopy we studied the hot molecular gas in the close vicinity of the star. The emission from the hot CO gas arises in a small-scale disk revolving around the star on Keplerian orbits. While the disk itself cannot be spatially resolved, its emission is reflected by dust arranged in arc-like structures and clumps surrounding MWC 137 on small scales. In the radio regime we mapped the cold molecular gas in the outskirts of the optical nebula. We found that large amounts of cool molecular gas and warm dust embrace the optical nebula in the east, south and west. No cold gas or dust were detected in the north and north-western regions. In order to study the growth and evolution of circumstellar disks around classical Be stars, we analyze optical time-series photometry from the KELT survey with simultaneous infrared and visible spectroscopy from the APOGEE survey and BeSS database for a sample of 160 Galactic classical Be stars. The systems studied here show variability including transitions from a diskless to a disk-possessing state (and vice versa), and persistent disks that vary in strength, being replenished at either regularly or irregularly occurring intervals. We detect disk-building events (outbursts) in the light curves of 28\% of our sample. Outbursts are more commonly observed in early- (57\%), compared to mid- (27\%) and late-type (8\%) systems. A given system may show anywhere between 0 -- 40 individual outbursts in its light curve, with amplitudes ranging up to $\sim$0.5 mag and event durations between $\sim$2 -- 1000 days. We study how both the photometry and spectroscopy change together during active episodes of disk growth or dissipation, revealing details about the evolution of the circumstellar environment. We demonstrate that photometric activity is linked to changes in the inner disk, and show that, at least in some cases, the disk growth process is asymmetrical. Observational evidence of Be star disks both growing and clearing from the inside out is presented. The duration of disk buildup and dissipation phases are measured for 70 outbursts, and we find that the average outburst takes about twice as long to dissipate as it does to build up in optical photometry. The first results of radiative transfer calculations on decretion discs of binary Be stars are presented. A smoothed particle hydrodynamics code computes the structure of Be discs in coplanar circular binary systems for a range of orbital and disc parameters. The resulting disc configuration consists of two spiral arms, and can be given as input into a Monte Carlo code, which calculates the radiative transfer along the line of sight for various observational coordinates. Making use of the property of steady disc structure in coplanar circular binaries, observables are computed as functions of the orbital phase. Orbital-phase series of line profiles are given for selected parameter sets under various viewing angles, to allow comparison with observations. Flat-topped profiles with and without superimposed multiple structures are reproduced, showing, for example, that triple-peaked profiles do not have to be necessarily associated with warped discs and misaligned binaries. It is demonstrated that binary tidal effects give rise to phase-locked variability of the violet-to-red (V/R) ratio of hydrogen emission lines. The V/R ratio exhibits two maxima per cycle; in certain cases those maxima are equal, leading to a clear new V/R cycle every half orbital period. High spatial resolution is the key for the understanding various astrophysical phenomena. But even with the future E-ELT, single dish instruments are limited to a spatial resolution of about 4 mas in the visible. For the closest objects within our Galaxy most of the stellar photosphere remains smaller than 1 mas. With the success of long baseline interferometry these limitations were soom overcome. Today low and high resolution interferometric instruments on the VLTI and CHARA offer an immense range of astrophysical studies. Combining more telescopes and moving to visible wavelengths broadens the science cases even more. With the idea of developing strong science cases for a future visible interferometer, we organized a science group around the following topics: pre-main sequence and main sequence stars, fundamental parameters, asteroseismology and classical pulsating stars, evolved stars, massive stars, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and imaging techniques. A meeting was organized on the 15th and 16th of January, 2015 in Nice with the support of the Action Specific in Haute Resolution Angulaire (ASHRA), the Programme National en Physique Stellaire (PNPS), the Lagrange Laboratory and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur, in order to present these cases and to discuss them further for future visible interferometers. B[e] supergiants (B[e]SGs) are evolved massive stars in a short-lived transition phase. During this phase, these objects eject large amounts of material, which accumulates in a circumstellar disk-like structure. The expelled material is typically dense and cool, providing the cradle for molecule and dust condensation and for a rich, ongoing chemistry. Very little is known about the chemical composition of these disks, beyond the emission from dust and CO revolving around the star on Keplerian orbits. As massive stars preserve an oxygen-rich surface composition throughout their life, other oxygen-based molecules can be expected to form. As SiO is the second most stable oxygen compound, we initiated an observing campaign to search for first-overtone SiO emission bands. We obtained high-resolution near-infrared L-band spectra for a sample of Galactic B[e]SGs with reported CO band emission. We clearly detect emission from the SiO first-overtone bands in CPD-52 9243 and indications for faint emission in HD 62623, HD 327083, and CPD-57 2874. From model fits, we find that in all these stars the SiO bands are rotationally broadened with a velocity lower than observed in the CO band forming regions, suggesting that SiO forms at larger distances from the star. Hence, searching for and analyzing these bands is crucial for studying the structure and kinematics of circumstellar disks, because they trace complementary regions to the CO band formation zone. B[e] supergiants (B[e]SGs) are transitional objects in the post-main sequence evolution of massive stars. The small number of B[e]SGs known so far in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds indicates that this evolutionary phase is short. Nevertheless, the strong aspherical mass loss occurring during this phase, which leads to the formation of rings or disk-like structures, and the similarity to possible progenitors of SN1987A emphasize the importance of B[e]SGs for the dynamics of the interstellar medium as well as stellar and galactic chemical evolution. The number of objects and their mass loss behavior at different metallicities are essential ingredients for accurate predictions from stellar and galactic evolution calculations. However, B[e]SGs are not easily identified, as they share many characteristics with luminous blue variables (LBVs) in their quiescent (hot) phase. We present medium-resolution near-infrared K-band spectra for four stars in M 31, which have been assigned a hot LBV (candidate) status. Applying diagnostics that were recently developed to distinguish B[e]SGs from hot LBVs, we classify two of the objects as bonafide LBVs; one of them currently in outburst. In addition, we firmly classify the two stars 2MASS J00441709+4119273 and 2MASS J00452257+4150346 as the first B[e]SGs in M 31 based on strong CO band emission detected in their spectra, and infrared colors typical for this class of stars., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted to ApJ Letters

During the post-main sequence evolution massive stars pass through several short-lived phases, in which they experience enhanced mass loss in the form of clumped winds and mass ejection events of unclear origin. The discovery that stars populating the blue, luminous part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram can pulsate hence suggests that stellar pulsations might influence or trigger enhanced mass loss and eruptions. The appearance of the B[e] phenomenon in evolved massive stars such as B[e] supergiants is still a mystery. While these stars are generally found to have disks that are cool and dense enough for efficient molecule and dust condensation, the origin of the disk material is still unclear. We aim at studying the kinematics and origin of the disk in the eccentric binary system GG Car, whose primary component is proposed to be a B[e] supergiant. Based on medium- and high-resolution near-infrared spectra we analyzed the CO-band emission detected from GG Car. The complete CO-band structure delivers information on the density and temperature of the emitting region, and the detectable 13CO bands allow us to constrain the evolutionary phase. In addition, the kinematics of the CO gas can be extracted from the shape of the first 12CO band head. We find that the CO gas is located in a ring surrounding the eccentric binary system, and its kinematics agrees with Keplerian rotation with a velocity, projected to the line of sight, of (80\pm 1) km/s. The CO ring has a column density of (5\pm 3)x10^21 cm^-2 and a temperature of 3200\pm 500 K. In addition, the material is chemically enriched in 13CO, which agrees with the primary component being slightly evolved off the main sequence. We discuss two possible scenarios for the origin of the circumbinary disk: (i) non-conservative Roche lobe overflow, and (ii) the possibility that the progenitor of the primary component could have been a classical Be star. Neither can be firmly excluded, but for Roche lobe overflow to occur, a combination of stellar and orbital parameter extremawould be required., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

HD 50138 presents the B[e] phenomenon, but its nature is not clear yet. This star is known to present spectral variations, which have been associated with outbursts and shell phases. We analyze the line profile variability of HD 50138 and its possible origin, which provide possible hints to its evolutionary stage, so far said to be close to the end of (or slightly beyond) the main sequence. New high-resolution spectra of HD 50138 obtained with the HERMES spectrograph over several nights (five of them consecutively) were analyzed, allowing us to confirm short-term line profile variability. Our new data show short-term variations in the photospheric lines. On the other hand, purely circumstellar lines (such as [O I] lines) do not show such rapid variability. The rotational velocity of HD 50138, V_rot = 90.3 +- 4.3 km/s, and the rotation period, P = 3.64 +- 1.16 d, were derived from the He II 4026A photospheric line. Based on the moment method, we confirm that the origin of this short-term line profile variability is not stellar spots, and it may be caused by pulsations. In addition, we show that macroturbulence may affect the profiles of photospheric lines, as is seen for B supergiants. The location of HD 50138 at the end of (or slightly beyond) the main sequence, the newly detected presence of line profile variability resembling pulsating stars, and macroturbulence make this star a fascinating object., Comment: Paper accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (9 pages, 13 figures, 2012 in press)

Thanks to the high spatial resolution provided by long baseline interferometry, it is possible to understand the complex circumstellar geometry around stars with the B[e] phenomenon. These stars are composed by objects in different evolutionary stages, like high- and low-mass evolved stars, intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars and symbiotic objects. However, up to now more than 50% of the confirmed B[e] stars are not well classified, being called unclassified B[e] stars. From instruments like VLTI/AMBER and VLTI/MIDI, we have identified the presence of gaseous and dusty circumstellar disks, which have provided us with some hints related to the nature of these objects. HD 50138 is a southern star that presents the B[e] phenomenon, but its evolutionary stage is still not well known. This object presents spectral variability, which can be explained by outbursts or shell phases and spectropolarimetric observations have shown the presence of a non-spherically symmetric circumstellar environment that is responsible for the B[e] phenomenon. Based on recent optical long baseline interferometric observations from the VLTI/MIDI and VLTI/AMBER, and also from the Keck segment-tilting experiment, we study the structure of the circumstellar environment of HD 50138, through a geometrical analytical modeling, also using the recent LITpro software and considering a large space of parameters. We resolve and describe its circumstellar geometry for the first time in detail. The presence of a dusty circumstellar disk with an orientation onto the sky-plane of 71+-7 degrees, which is perpendicular to the polarimetric measurements from the literature, was derived. We also derived that HD 50138 is seen under an intermediate angle related to the line of sight, 56+-4 degrees. B[e] stars are among the most peculiar objects in the sky. This spectral type, characterised by allowed and forbidden emission lines, and a large infrared excess, does not represent an homogenous class of objects, but instead, a mix of stellar bodies seen in all evolutionary status. Among them, one can find Herbig stars, planetary nebulae central stars, interacting binaries, supermassive stars, and even "unclassified" B[e] stars: systems sharing properties of several of the above. B[e] supergiants are luminous, massive post-main sequence stars exhibiting non-spherical winds, forbidden lines, and hot dust in a disc-like structure. The physical properties of their rich and complex circumstellar environment (CSE) are not well understood, partly because these CSE cannot be easily resolved at the large distances found for B[e] supergiants (typically $\ga 1$~kpc). From mid-IR spectro-interferometric observations obtained with VLTI/MIDI we seek to resolve and study the CSE of the Galactic B[e] supergiant CPD-57\degr\,2874. For a physical interpretation of the observables (visibilities and spectrum) we use our ray-tracing radiative transfer code (FRACS), which is optimised for thermal spectro-interferometric observations. Thanks to the short computing time required by FRACS ($<10$~s per monochromatic model), best-fit parameters and uncertainties for several physical quantities of CPD-57\degr\,2874 were obtained, such as inner dust radius, relative flux contribution of the central source and of the dusty CSE, dust temperature profile, and disc inclination. The analysis of VLTI/MIDI data with FRACS allowed one of the first direct determinations of physical parameters of the dusty CSE of a B[e] supergiant based on interferometric data and using a full model-fitting approach. In a larger context, the study of B[e] supergiants is important for a deeper understanding of the complex structure and evolution of hot, massive stars.

B[e] supergiants are surrounded by large amounts of hydrogen neutral material, traced by the emission in the optical [OI] lines. This neutral material is most plausibly located within their dense, cool circumstellar disks, which are formed from the (probably non-spherically symmetric) wind material released by the star. Neither the formation mechanism nor the resulting structure and internal kinematics of these disks (or disk-like outflows) are well known. However, rapid rotation, lifting the material from the equatorial surface region, seems to play a fundamental role. The B[e] supergiant LHA 115-S 65 (S65) in the SMC is one of the two most rapidly rotating B[e] stars known. Its almost edge-on orientation allows a detailed kinematical study of its optically thin forbidden emission lines. With a focus on the [OI] lines, we test the two plausible disk scenarios: the outflowing and the Keplerian rotating disk. Based on high- and low-resolution optical spectra, we investigate the density and temperature structure in those disk regions that are traced by the [OI] emission to constrain the disk sizes and mass fluxes needed to explain the observed [OI] line luminosities. In addition, we compute the emerging line profiles expected for either an outflowing disk or a Keplerian rotating disk, which can directly be compared to the observed profiles. Both disk scenarios deliver reasonably good fits to the line luminosities and profiles of the [OI] lines. Nevertheless, the Keplerian disk model seems to be the more realistic one, because it also agrees with the kinematics derived from the large number of additional lines in the spectrum. As additional support for the presence of a high-density, gaseous disk, the spectrum shows two very intense and clearly double-peaked [CaII] lines. The observed spectral variation of HD 50138 has led different authors to classify it in a very wide range of spectral types and luminosity classes (from B5 to A0 and III to Ia) and at different evolutionary stages as either HAeBe star or classical Be. Aims: Based on new high-resolution optical spectroscopic data from 1999 and 2007 associated to a photometric analysis, the aim of this work is to provide a deep spectroscopic description and a new set of parameters for this unclassified southern B[e] star and its interstellar extinction. Methods: From our high-resolution optical spectroscopic data separated by 8 years, we perform a detailed spectral description, presenting the variations seen and discussing their possible origin. We derive the interstellar extinction to HD 50138 by taking the influences of the circumstellar matter in the form of dust and an ionized disk into account. Based on photometric data from the literature and the new Hipparcos distance, we obtain a revised set of parameters for HD 50138. Results: Because of the spectral changes, we tentatively suggest that a new shell phase could have taken place prior to our observations in 2007. We find a color excess value of E(B-V) = 0.08 mag, and from the photometric analysis, we suggest that HD 50138 is a B6-7 III-V star. New results on the B[e] star HD87643 are presented here. They were obtained with a wide range of different instruments, from wide-field imaging with the WFI camera, high resolution spectroscopy with the FEROS instrument, high angular resolution imaging with the adaptive optics camera NACO, to the highest angular resolution available with AMBER on the VLTI. We report the detection of a companion to HD87643 with AMBER, subsequently confirmed in the NACO data. It is surprising to find dust around B type stars, as in the case of B[e] stars. These stars exhibit a dense, dusty environment witnessed by their infrared-excess and many emission lines from permitted and forbidden transitions. Given the large uncertainties on their distances, this spectral type gathers many different kind of sources that may harbor a similar circumstellar environment, i.e. a dense dusty disk. At the exception of Young Stellar Objects, in many cases, it is very difficult to understand the origin of such a disk without invoking binarity. We describe current powerful methods, like spectral disentangling, spectro-astrometry and long baseline interferometry, to detect especially close binaries amongst the unclassified B[e] stars. Context. The star HD 87643, exhibiting the "B[e] phenomenon", has one of the most extreme infrared excesses for this object class. It harbours a large amount of both hot and cold dust, and is surrounded by an extended reflection nebula. Aims. One of our major goals was to investigate the presence of a companion in HD87643. In addition, the presence of close dusty material was tested through a combination of multi-wavelength high spatial 5Aresolution observations. Methods. We observed HD 87643 with high spatial resolution techniques, using the near-IR AMBER/VLTI interferometer with baselines ranging from 60 m to 130 m and the mid-IR MIDI/VLTI interferometer with baselines ranging from 25 m to 65 m. These observations are complemented by NACO/VLT adaptive-optics-corrected images in the K and L-bands, ESO-2.2m optical Wide-Field Imager large-scale images in the B, V and R-bands, Results. We report the direct detection of a companion to HD 87643 by means of image synthesis using the AMBER/VLTI instrument. The presence of the companion is confirmed by the MIDI and NACO data, although with a lower confidence. The companion is separated by ~ 34 mas with a roughly north-south orientation. The period must be large (several tens of years) and hence the orbital parameters are not determined yet. Binarity with high eccentricity might be the key to interpreting the extreme characteristics of this system, namely a dusty circumstellar envelope around the primary, a compact dust nebulosity around the binary system and a complex extended nebula witnessing past violent ejections.

Optical observations from 1989 of the SMC B[e] supergiant star S23 revealed the presence of photospheric HeI absorption lines. In our high-resolution optical spectra from 2000, however, we could not identify any HeI line. The observed changes in spectral behaviour of S23 lead to different spectral classifications at different observing epochs. The aim of this research is, therefore, to find and discuss possible scenarios that might cause a disappearance of the photospheric HeI absorption lines within a period of only 11 years. From our high-resolution optical spectra, we perform a detailed investigation of the different spectral appearances of S23. We further determine the projected rotational velocities of S23 in the two epochs of observations. Based on its spectral appearance in 2000, we classify S23 as A1Ib star with an effective temperature of about 9000 K. Further, an interstellar extinction value of E(B-V) = 0.03 is derived. This is considerably lower than the previously published value, which means that, if the circumstellar extinction due to the stellar wind is neglected, the interstellar extinction, and hence the luminosity of the star, are overestimated. We derive a rotation velocity of v sin i = 150km/s, which means that S23 is rotating with about 75% of its critical speed. The object S23 is thus the fourth B[e] supergiant with confirmed high projected rotational velocity. The most striking result is the apparent cooling of S23 by more than 1500 K with a simultaneous increase of its rotation speed by about 35% within only 11 years. The star CD-42o11721 is a curious B[e] star sometimes pointed as an evolved B[e] supergiant and sometimes as a young HAeBe star, due to very uncertain or even unknown stellar parameters, especially the distance. In this paper, we present new data gained from high-resolution optical spectroscopy and a detailed description of IR data of this star. We present a qualitative study of the numerous emission lines in our optical spectra and the classification of their line profiles, which indicate a non-spherically symmetric circumstellar environment. The first real detection of numerous [Fe II] emission lines and of many other permitted and forbidden emission lines is reported. From our optical data, we derive an effective temperature of 14000 K, a radius of 17.3 +/- 0.6 Rsun, as well as a luminosity of 1.0 +/- 0.3 x 10^{4} Lsun. We advocate that CD-42o11721 might be a post-main sequence object, even though a pre-main sequence nature cannot be ruled out due to the uncertain distance. We further found that the SED in the optical and infrared can best be fitted with an outflowing disk-forming wind scenario rather than with a spherical symmetric envelope or with a flared disc, supporting our tentative classification as a B[e] supergiant., Comment: The paper contains 20 pages, 13 figures and 9 tables. (abridged) B[e] supergiants are known to possess geometrically thick dusty disks. Disk-forming wind models have, however, been found to be insufficient in reproducing the observed dust emission. This problem arises due to the severe assumption that, as for classical Be stars, the near-infrared excess emission originates in the disk. Modeling of the free-free and free-bound emission therefore results in an upper limit for the disk mass loss rate, hampering dust condensation in the disk. We propose a revised scenario for the non-spherical winds of B[e] supergiants: a normal B-type line-driven polar wind and an outflowing disk-forming wind that is neutral in hydrogen at, or very close to the stellar surface. We concentrate on the pole-on seen LMC B[e] supergiant R126 and calculate the line luminosities of the optical [OI] emission lines with an outflowing disk scenario. In addition, we compute the free-free and free-bound emission from a line-driven polar wind and model the spectral energy distribution in the optical and near-infrared. Good fits to the [OI] line luminosities are achieved for an outflowing disk that is neutral in hydrogen right from the stellar surface. Neutral thereby means that hydrogen is ionized by less than 0.1%. Consequently, the free-free and free-bound emission cannot (dominantly) arise from the disk and cannot limit the disk mass loss rate. The hydrogen neutral outflowing disk scenario therefore provides an ideal environment for efficient dust formation. The spectral energy distribution in the optical and near-infrared range can be well fitted with the stellar continuum plus free-free and free-bound emission from the polar line-driven wind. We report on the detection of [OI] emission lines in the high-resolution optical spectra of several Magellanic Cloud (MC) B[e] supergiants, which we took with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). (abridged) In this work we present the results of an optical and IR study for the curious B[e] star CD-42 11721. This object has a doubtful evolutionary stage, being either a pre-main sequence star (HAeB[e]) or an evolved star (sgB[e]). Our optical investigation could be splitted in two parts, a qualitative study based on the identification of the numerous emission lines present in the spectra and the classification of their line profiles, which indicate a non-spherically symmetric circumstellar environment, and a quantitative analysis of numerous forbidden lines, e.g. [OI], [OII], [NII] and [SII]. Assuming a typical circumstellar scenario for a sgB[e], i.e. a fast, low-density polar wind and a slow, high-density disc forming equatorial wind, we can reproduce very well the line luminosities of the forbidden lines. From this analysis, we can determine the mass loss rate of the star lying in the range from 4.4 x 10^(-6) to 2.2 x 10^(-5) M_sun/yr, depending on the considered redenning. Our IR study could also be splitted in two parts: the identification of several features in the SWS ISO spectrum, and the modeling of the SED of CD-42 11721. The first part shows the presence of a mixed chemistry, i.e. C- and O-rich dust in the same circumstellar medium. We have tried to model the SED, by using a numerical code written by us which considers a spherical circumstellar scenario. We present a study of the optical spectrum of the fascinating B[e] star Hen 2-90 based on new high-resolution observations taken with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). The recent HST image of Hen 2-90 (Sahai et al. 2002) reveals a bipolar, highly ionized region, a neutral disk-like structure seen almost perfectly edge-on, and an intermediate region of moderate ionization. The slits of our observations cover the same innermost region of Hen 2-90 as the HST image, which allows us to combine the observations. Our spectra contain a huge amount of permitted and forbidden emission lines of atoms in different stages of ionization. In addition, the line wings deliver velocity information of the emitting region. We find correlation between the different ionization states of the elements and the velocities derived from the line profiles: the highly ionized atoms have the highest outflow velocity, while the neutral lines have the lowest. When combining the velocity information with the HST image of Hen 2-90, it seems that a non-spherical stellar wind model is a good option to explain the ionization and spatial distribution of the circumstellar material. Our modeling of the forbidden emission lines results in strong evidence for Hen 2-90 being a compact planetary nebulae that has undergone a superwind phase of high, non-spherical mass loss, most probably triggered by a central star that was rotating with about 80% of the critical velocity. (abridged) We study the optical spectrum of the exciting B[e] star Hen 2-90 based on new high-resolution observations that cover the innermost 2". Our investigation is splitted in two parts, a qualitative study of the presence of the numerous emission lines and the classification of their line profiles which indicate a circumstellar environment of high complexity, and a quantitative analysis of numerous forbidden lines, e.g. [OI], [OII], [OIII], [SII], [SIII], [ArIII], [ClII], [ClIII] and [NII]. We modelled the forbidden lines under the assumption of a non-spherically symmetric wind based on the HST image. We find that in order to fit the observed line luminosities, the mass flux, surface temperature, and terminal wind velocities need to be latitude dependent, which might be explained in terms of a rapidly rotating central star. A rotation speed of 75-80 % of the critical velocity has been derived. The total mass loss rate of the star was determined to be of order 3 10^{-5} M_sun/yr. Such a wind scenario and the fact that compared to solar abundances C, O, and N seem to be underabundant while S, Ar and Cl have solar abundances, might be explained in terms of a rapidly rotating post-AGB star., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. We present the enigmatic galactic unclassified B[e] star Hen 2-90. Its optical spectrum is discussed and analysed in terms of the forbidden emission lines coming from a non-spherical wind. B[e] supergiants are known to possess outflowing cool disks but also some unclassified B[e] stars show clear indications for the presence of a neutral disk. We derive constraints on the disk mass loss rates, temperature distributions and disk opening angles for the Small Magellanic Cloud B[e] supergiant Hen S 18 and the unclassified galactic B[e] star Hen 2-90 by modeling the line luminosities of the [OI] lines arising in their optical spectrum. These lines are supposed to form in a hydrogen neutral disk. We find disk mass fluxes of order 3.4 10^-4 g s^-1 cm^-2 and 5.5 10^{-1} g s^{-1}cm^{-2} resulting in disk mass loss rates of 1.0 10^{-4} M_sun yr^{-1} and 1.5 10^{-5} M_sun yr^{-1} for Hen S 18 and Hen 2-90, respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in: "The Nature and Evolution of Disks around Hot Stars", eds.: R. The spectra of stars with the B[e] phenomenon are dominated by features that are related to physical conditions of circumstellar material around these objects and are not intrinsic to the stars. Previous studies have shown that emission lines present in the optical spectra of these objects are formed in an equatorial rotating disk. The analysis of high and low resolution spectra, obtained by us with 1.52 telescope in ESO for some Southern Galactic B[e] Stars, can give us information about the structure and velocity of the disk. The spectra of stars with the B[e] phenomenon are dominated by features that are related to physical conditions of circumstellar material around these objects and are not intrinsic to the stars. Because of this, they form a very heterogeneous group. This group contains objects with different evolutionary stages. Lamers et al. (1998) have suggested a new designation with five sub-groups, which indicate the evolutionary stage. They are: supergiants, pre-main sequence or Herbig Ae/Be, compact planetary nebulae, symbiotic and unclassified. The unclassified group has many objects that need a better study to resolve their evolutionary status. Forbidden lines can be a useful tool to solve this problem. They can give informations about chemical composition, ionization and density of the circunstellar medium and probably the evolutionary phase of these objects. We analize spectra of some galactic objects, obtained with FEROS and B&C spectrograph at 1.52 telescope in ESO (La Silla-Chile), with a special focus on the forbidden lines. We have studied the spectra of 5 B[e] stars of uncertain evolutionary stage.
