Citrus canker, which is caused by Xanthomonas citri, is a severe disease that affects citrus plants worldwide. This paper aimed to compare, for the first time, the chemical composition and anti-Xanthomonas citri activities of essential oils from Schinus molle fresh and dry leaves (EO-FL and EO-DL, respectively). Anti-X. citri activity of spathulenol, the major constituent of oils, was also evaluated. Activities were screened by the broth microdilution method on 96‐well culture plates. Three major constituents were identified in EO-FL and EO-DL by GC-MS and GC-FID: spathulenol, β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide. EO-DL (MIC = 31.25 µg/mL), EO-FL (MIC = 62.5 µg/mL) and spathulenol (MIC = 100 µg/mL) were active against X. citri strains (resistant, tolerant and sensitive to copper). Even though results showed that in vitro potential of EO-FL, EO-DL and spathulenol against X. citri, further in vivo studies are needed to prove their applicability to the biocontrol of citrus canker. Essential oils (EOs) are natural products widely used in sustainable agrochemistry, not only because they are biodegradable and safe but also because they are regarded as alternatives to chemical fungicides against fungal species that attack crops. Allelopathy, another field of study, falls within the most recent and sustainable strategies applied to weed suppression to replace synthetic herbicides. Therefore, this study reports the chemical composition and allelopathic and antifungal effects of the EOs extracted from Calyptranthes concinna dried leaves (Cc-EO) and its pure major constituent elemicin. Their antifungal activities were evaluated by the disk diffusion method (DDM) at doses between 0.05 mg/mL and 0.4 mg/mL of Cc-EO and elemicin. The allelopathic effect was evaluated by studying the inhibition of germination and the growth of Lactuca sativa seeds. The chemical composition of Cc-EO was determined by GC-MS and GC-FID analyses. The major constituents of Cc-EO were elemicin (60.5%), α-cadinol (9.0%) and caryophyllene oxide (8.3%). Cc-EO and elemicin were assayed in vitro against 17 fungi of agronomic interest (Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, A. nomius, Penicillium digitatum, P. expansum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, S. rolfsii, S. minor, Fusarium graminearum, Myrothecium verrucaria, Corynespora cassiicola, Erwinia psidii, Colletotrichum musae, Alternaria carthami, Rhizoctonia solani, Rhizopus stolonifer and Macrophomina phaseolina). The concentration of Cc-EO (0.4 mg/mL) inhibited 100% of the mycelium growth of seven strains, equal to the fungicide fluazinam, which was used as a positive control. Elemicin showed antifungal activity against all fungi at all concentrations under investigation (above 50%). A strong allelopathic effect was recorded for Cc-EO and elemicin at the dose of 0.28 mg/mL, with the almost total inhibition of germination. Spiranthera odoratissima A. St.-Hil. (Rutaceae) has been popularly used against abdominal pain and rheumatism. This study aimed at extracting hexane from S. odoratissima (HE-SO) leaves to identify and quantify its volatile compounds by GC-MS and GC-FID and to evaluate its antifungal, antileishmanial and antibacterial activities in vitro. HE-SO exhibited antileishmanial activity against promastigote forms of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis (IC50 = 38.16 µg/mL) and was moderately active against Xylella fastidiosa (MIC = 100 µg/mL). HE-SO also showed remarkable antifungal potential against six strains of Candida species, i. e., C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, C. tropicalis and C. orthopsilosis. The lowest MIC values were between 31.25 and 250 µg/mL. Spathulenol (20.2%), τ-cadinol (11.7%), α-cadinol (9.4%), caryophyllene oxide (9.2%) and isoaromadendrene epoxide (8.2%) were the major components identified in HE-SO. This paper aims to investigate, for the first time, physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant capacity of Psidium myrtoides ripe and unripe fruit. In addition, essential oil was extracted from fresh leaves (PM-EO) collected in dry and rainy seasons to investigate the influence of seasonality and, after that, to evaluate its antifungal activity on mycelial growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Both GC-FID and GC-MS analyses revealed that major components determined in PM-EO were β-caryophyllene (20.0% and 32.9%) and limonene (10.4% and 19.8%) in rainy and dry seasons, respectively. High antioxidant capacity was displayed by unripe fruit (IC50 = 3.57 mg/mL) and ripe ones (IC50 = 3.68 mg/mL). Both showed high total phenolic and tannin contents. In sum, PM-EO showed satisfactory antifungal activity, since its inhibitory action on mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides was above 70% in the dry season, while it exhibited weak activity in the rainy season. Eugenia species have been appreciated for their edible fruits and medicinal properties. This paper aims to investigate the chemical composition and in vitro antileishmanial, antifungal and antiproliferative activities of essential oil from aerial parts of Eugenia pyriformis (EP-EO). The oil showed strong antileishmanial activity against promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (IC50 = 2.16 µg/mL). It also exhibited high antifungal activity against Malassezia furfur (MIC = 30 µg/mL), which was determined by the broth microdilution method. Its antiproliferative activity was evaluated against the following cells: GM07429A (normal cell), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), HeLa (human cervical adenocarcinoma) and M059J (human glioblastoma). Its major constituents, which were determined by GC-FID and GC-MS, were limonene (14.8%), nerolidol (11.0%), α-cadinol (10.3%), caryophyllene oxide (9.9%) and β-pinene (7.1%). These results showed, for the first time, the effectiveness of EP-EO as a natural product which has promising biological activities, a fact that enables its ethnopharmacological use. Callistemon viminalis has been widely known due to its therapeutic properties. Tuberculosis is a deadly infectious disease caused predominantly by Mycobacterium tuberculosis . Other respiratory diseases may also be caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria. Malassezia furfur causes dermal inflammation and tissue damage. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro inhibitory effects of essential oils (EOs) from C. viminalis leaves (EO-CL) and flowers (EO-CF) against M. tuberculosis , Mycobacterium kansasii , Mycobacterium avium and M. furfur strains. Their cytotoxic activity was evaluated by the brine shrimp assay. Resulting MIC values of all EOs under study were promising since they ranged from 50 to 100 µg/mL. Both EO-CL and EO-CF showed nontoxicity against Artemia salina by the brine shrimp assay (LC 50 > 1000 µg/mL). GC-FID and GC-MS analyses showed that 1,8-cineole was the major component of both EOs. These results revealed the promising potential of EO-CL and EO-CF to develop new antibacterial and antifungal drugs.
