Abstract

The growth, enzyme activity, and nutritional value of Theobroma cacao L. are strongly affected under hypoxic conditions and by the toxicity of iron (Fe). It is a challenge to mitigate the stress caused by excessive levels of Fe under flooding in cocoa trees. This study evaluated the physiological response of two cocoa genotypes to different Fe concentrations and hypoxic conditions. The plants were cultivated under three Fe concentrations (44.5, 133.5, and 400.5 lmol L-1 FeSO4) and two hydroponic cultivation conditions, one with an oxygenated nutrient solution and the other solution without oxygenation (hypoxia). Growth characteristics, enzyme activity, and nutritional balance were evaluated at 116 days after planting. An increased guaiacol peroxidase activity and higher phenolic compound contents of genotype TSH 1188 were observed at the Fe concentration of 400.5 lmol L-1 under hypoxia. The genotype SIAL 70 was also recorded increased with rising Fe concentrations, even without aeration. Regardless of the hypoxic conditions, the calcium content of both genotypes decreased with increasing Fe concentrations in the nutrient solution, while the Zn concentration of genotype TSH 1188 increased, regardless of the hypoxic nutrient solution, and that of genotype SIAL 70 decreased under hypoxic conditions. The genotypes respond differently to Fe excess and hypoxia, indicating distinct tolerance mechanisms for each stress type. In general, the tolerance of genotype TSH 1188 and SIAL 70 to the combination of Fe excess and hypoxia, respectively, was high and moderate, suggesting that the two genotypes have different mechanisms to support these stress conditions. Abstract

Low water availability affects plant photosynthesis, growth, and yield. In this study, physiological and biometric traits were evaluated in black pepper cultivars (Kottanadan and Bragantina) growing under water deficit conditions, according to a randomized block design, with two factors [two pepper cultivars and six water deficit levels]. Nine replicates were used for each treatment. The plant survival percentage was 90% and 10% in Kottanadan (after 12 WDD) and Bragantina (after 10 WDD), respectively. Relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic pigments, and JIP-test parameters were reduced in Bragantina pepper cultivar with water deprivation, except the basal quantum yield of the process non-photochemical in PSII (Fo/Fm), which increased with water deficit. Shoot and root dry matter accumulation, leaf number, and root volume were reduced at 10 and 12 WDD in Bragantina and Kottanadan pepper cultivars, respectively. The results obtained in this study showed that the two pepper cultivars differed strongly in their responses to the water deficit. The Kottanadan pepper cultivar showed an advantage over the Bragantina considering their high photochemical performance maintained until 12 WDD, showing better stability and efficiency in utilizing excitation energy under low water availability. Abstract

O presente artigo suscita tema atual no que concerne aquelas pessoas que se encontram privadas de sua liberdade, encarceradas em estabelecimentos prisionais. Refere-se, nesse sentir, que o sistema penitenciário brasileiro enfrenta muitos problemas para concretizar uma realidade que efetivamente oferte possibilidades de reinserção social à população carcerária. Sendo assim, para a elaboração do trabalho em tela, foi estabelecido como objetivo geral o desenvolvimento de uma análise acerca do trabalho no ambiente prisional em relação à perspectiva da reinserção social. Como objetivos específicos, por sua vez, foram definidos três elementos norteadores, quais sejam: considerações históricas referentes a pena e a prisão; execução penal: seus princípios e considerações gerais e, por derradeiro, o trabalho prisional e o processo de ressocialização. No tocante à metodologia, trata-se de uma análise bibliográfica, onde se fez uso de livros e artigos disponíveis na rede mundial de computadores. Os resultados advindos deste estudo demonstram a necessidade da atenção à Constituição Federal, bem como a Lei de Execução Penal no que diz respeito ao cumprimento das regras impostas ao segregado para que, ao deixar o cárcere, possa ter a oportunidade de retornar ao convívio social e a prática laborativa. Observou-se, por fim, que a execução penal a que está submetido o interno está respaldada em princípios, os quais são norteadores da atuação do magistrado, que por sua vez, ao acompanhar o processo de cumprimento de pena percebe que não basta tão somente a oferta do labor, por si só, não sendo este suficiente para a correta reinserção daquele que delinquiu, fazendo-se necessário observar, também, a atuação do Estado quanto ao resguardo a dignidade humana.

O presente artigo foi elaborado com o intuito de trazer o tema criminologia para uma abordagem de simples entendimento, apresentando uma dinâmica direta sobre o assunto e proporcionando uma breve leitura demonstrando clareza sobre o tema, nos remetendo, em um primeiro momento, no que dispõe sobre os aspectos gerais da Criminologia realizando uma abordagem sobre o seu conceito, bem como sua origem, objecto, método, relação com os demais ramos e o Direito Penal, pois trata-se de uma ciência social empírica de observação que busca estudar a origem do homem como um fenômeno criminoso, o que se verifica através de seus vários conceitos, ora apresentados por seus estudiosos. Em um segundo momento, aborda-se os fenômenos da criminologia, seus comportamentos desviantes, delinquentes e criminosos, levando-os a apresentar distúrbios de personalidade como neurosis, psicosis, personalidades psicopáticas e transtornos da sexualidade, questiona-se por que motivo, ou motivos, alguns desses indivíduos parecem ficando mais predispostos a cometimento de delitos, diferenciando-se das demais pessoas da sociedade. Importante salientar, mesmo que brevemente, a grande contribuição para o estudo da Criminologia, no ilustre trabalho, mesmo que de forma breve, o tema “o Homem Delinquente”, de Lombroso e a “Criminologia”, onde entendia ser possível detectar no criminoso quando este apresentava determinados sinais, denominados “stigmata”, de natureza física e psíquica. Lombroso foi considerado “Pai da Criminologia” e a partir dele começaram os mais diversos campos de pesquisa sobre o comportamento do criminoso, oque fez surgir a Criminologia Clínica e, em contraposição, a Criminologia Sociológica. Por fim, faz-se uma abordagem quanto ao papel da vítima e sua evolução no estudo da Criminologia.&nbsp

Abstract

The effects of iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and lead on the chlorophyll content, carbon assimilation, and the antiradical activity of Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa were evaluated in regions affected by the Fundão dam disruption in Brazil. The mine waste which settled and accumulated in the sediments could represent long-term contamination. It can be expected that the iron oxyhydroxides deposited in the sediments will be solubilized, leading to chronic contamination by trace metals and the accumulation of these metals in the biota. In this sense, biological indicators prove to be important tools to assess this type of damage. The different bioaccumulation of metals by the species revealed that R. mangle was more impacted by Mn and Cu and that L. racemosa showed alterations in its physiological responses in the presence of Cu, Zn, and Fe. The concentration of these metals in the leaves, with values above previous local reference limits, was associated with reductions in the chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b content and carbon assimilation, mainly in L. racemosa. The antiradical activity was also altered, suggesting a lower ability of both species to eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS). A possible reason for the symptoms of oxidative stress may be due to the reduced efficiency of antioxidant defense by Cu2+ and Zn2+. In addition, the presence of Pb in the leaf tissue may be toxic to the fauna and the bioaccumulation of this metal and trace elements can be a way to transfer them into the food web by biomagnification. Abstract

Information and communication technology solutions have the potential to support active and healthy aging and improve monitoring and treatment outcomes. To make such solutions acceptable, all stakeholders must be involved in the requirements elicitation process. Due to the COVID-19 situation, alternative approaches to commonly used face-to-face methods must often be used. One aim of the current article is to share a unique experience from the Pharaon project where due to the COVID-19 outbreak alternative elicitation methods were used. In addition, an overview of common functional, quality, and emotional goals identified by six pilot sites is presented to complement the knowledge about the needs of older adults. Methods:Originally planned face-to-face co-creation seminars were impossible to carry out, and all pilot sites chose alternative requirements elicitation methods that were most suitable in their situation. The elicited requirements were presented in the form of goal models. In one summary goal model, we provide an overview of common functional, quality, and emotional goals. Results:Different elicitation methods were combined based on the digital literacy of the target group and their access to digital tools. Methods applied without digital technologies were phone interviews, reviews of literature and previous projects, while by means of digital technologies online interviews, online questionnaires, and (semi-)virtual co-creation seminars were conducted. The combination of the methods allowed to involve all planned stakeholders. Virtual and semi-virtual co-creation seminars created collaborative environment comparable to face-to-face situations, while online participation helped to save the time of the participants. The most prevalent functional goals elicited were “Monitor health,” “Receive advice,” “Receive information.” “Easy to use/comfortable,” “personalized/tailored,” “automatic/smart” were identified as most prevalent quality goals. Most frequently occurring emotional goals were “involved,” “empowered,” and “informed.” Conclusion:There are alternative methods to face-to-face co-creation seminars, which effectively involve older adults and other stakeholders in the requirements elicitation process. Despite the used elicitation method, the requirements can be easily transformed into goal models to present the results in a uniform way. The common requirements across different pilots provided a strong foundation for representing detailed requirements and input for further software development processes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Palliative care aims to contribute to pain relief, improvement with regard to symptoms and enhancement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with chronic conditions. Most of the palliative care protocols, programmes and units are predominantly focused on patients with cancer and their specific needs. Patients with non-cancer chronic conditions may also have significantly impaired HRQoL and poor survival, but do not yet receive appropriate and holistic care. The traditional focus of palliative care has been at the end-of-life stages instead of the relatively early phases of serious chronic conditions. The 'Patient-centred pathways of early palliative care, supportive ecosystems and appraisal standard' (InAdvance) project implements and evaluates early palliative care in the daily clinical routine addressing patients with complex chronic conditions in the evolution towards advanced stages. The objective of the current study is to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this novel model of palliative care in the relatively early phases in patients with chronic conditions. METHODS: In this study, a single blind randomised controlled trial design will be employed. A total of 320 participants (80 in each study site and 4 sites in total) will be randomised on a 1:1 basis to the Palliative Care Needs Assessment (PCNA) arm or the Care-as-Usual arm. This study includes a formative evaluation approach as well as a cost-effectiveness analysis with a within-trial horizon. Study outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, 6 months, 12 months and 18 months after the implementation of the interventions. Study outcomes include HRQoL, intensity of symptoms, functional status, emotional distress, caregiving burden, perceived quality of care, adherence to treatment, feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of the intervention, intervention costs, other healthcare costs and informal care costs. Abstract

The objective of the work was to evaluate the production of sour passion fruit seedlings propagated by seeds in hydroponic cultivation and associateds with phosphorus use efficiency. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the experimental farm of the Centro Universitário Norte do Espírito Santo. The experimental design used was in randomized blocks with five replications. The treatments consisted of phosphorus concentrations of 0.032; 0.125; 0.500 and 1,000 mmol.L-1. Each plot was composed of 5 plants arranged in the cultivation pipes. The characteristics analyzed were plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, fresh shoot weight, fresh root weight, dry shoot weight, dry root weight, root volume, leaf area, quality index of Dickson (IQD) and chemical analysis of the aerial part and roots to calculate the absorption, translocation and use of phosphorus efficiency.
