This study evaluated the effects of seasons and latitude on tick counting and determined the best model to estimate genetic parameters for tick count and hair coat. Records of animals naturally exposed to ticks on farms in several Brazilian states and in Paraguay were used. The ANOVA was used to verify the effects of seasons and latitude on the tick count trait. Spring was the season with the highest average, followed by summer and autumn, which showed no differences between them. The winter presented the lowest average values. Latitude -11° had the highest mean value followed by latitude -18°. The Bayesian approach was used to evaluate tick count and hair coat and to identify a suitable model for estimating genetic parameters for use in genetic evaluations. The data were analyzed using an animal model with four different specifications for “fixed” purposes. The inference was based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The criteria for selection of the Bayesian model indicated that the M1 model, which considered the breed composition in the contemporary group, was superior to the other models, both for tick count and hair coat. Heritability estimates for tick count and hair coat obtained using the M1 model were 0.14 and 0.22, respectively. The rank correlations between the models for tick count and hair coat were estimated and reordering was verified for tick count. The estimated genetic correlation between tick count and hair coat traits was negative (-0.12). These findings suggest that different genes regulate tick count and hair coat.

The objective of this work was to identify the most suitable model for the genetic evaluation of post-weaning weight gain in a multibreed Angus-Nelore population. Three models were tested using the Bayesian inference method: traditional animal model (M1), multibreed animal model without (M2) and with segregation (M3). The choice of the best model followed the criteria: number of parameters (Np), deviance information criterion (DIC), conditional predictive ordinate (CPO), and deviance based on Bayes factors. Spearman’s rank correlations were estimated for the top 10, 20, and 30% sires. M1 presented the highest values for all criteria, except for Np, and the lowest direct heritability estimate of 0.15±0.01. The heritability estimates for M2 and M3 were higher and similar, being 0.29±0.02 and 0.27±0.02, respectively. M3 showed the lowest values for mean deviance, DIC, and CPO, being the best-fitting model among the three tested. Spearman’s correlation between the predicted genetic values for the models ranged from 0.69 to 0.99. The multibreed models are the most suitable for the genetic evaluation of multibreed populations, and M3 shows the best fit for the studied population.

Objetivou-se identificar quais as variáveis do comportamento ingestivo, padrões de deslocamento e parâmetros produtivos da pastagem explicam a maior parte dos resultados entre os níveis de suplementação ofertados a novilhas terminadas em Tifton 85 (Cynodon dactylon). Utilizou-se a análise de componentes principais para identificar quais variáveis foram relevantes. Na análise, oito variáveis, tempo de pastejo, tempo de ócio, número de estações alimentares/dia, tempo em cada estação, taxa de bocado/dia, massa e oferta de lâminas foliares e relação folha:colmo, explicaram 80,5% da variação dos resultados. Novilhas exclusivamente em pastagem tiveram maior tempo de pastejo e taxa de bocado/dia e menor tempo em ócio. Novilhas que receberam 0,4% de peso corporal de suplemento visitaram maior número de estações alimentares, enquanto novilhas que receberam 1,2% de suplemento permaneceram mais tempo em cada estação alimentar. No primeiro período de avaliação, as novilhas tiveram maior tempo de pastejo, número de estações alimentares/dia, taxa de bocado, massa e oferta de lâminas foliares. O nível 0,8% de suplemento, não influenciou as variáveis avaliadas. Os padrões de deslocamento e o comportamento ingestivo de novilhas recebendo ou não suplemento são influenciadas pelas características estruturais do pasto.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for 7 traits of Nellore, to verify how the estimate breeding values (EBVs) of the traits are distributed in different Brazilian states, and to suggest a selection index by state/sex.Heritability (h2) and EBVs were estimated by single-trait analysis under animal model, using the AIREML method. In addition, relationships among animal EBVs for these traits were explored using principal component analysis (PCA). Direct h2 estimates ranging from 0.20 ± 0.06 to 0.51 ± 0.05 indicate that productive and morphological traits are all heritable to varying degrees. However, AFC presented low h2 estimate (0.05 ± 0.06). The first 2 principal componentspresented correlation above ± 0.60 with EBVs of all evaluated traits, retaining above 96% of the total breeding value variance.In state of Parana they are the best EBVs for growth traits (W550 and D400) in males and females. In general, Minas Gerais was highlighted for reproductive traits in males (EBVSC550), and females (EBVAFC). Selecting for the PC1 would identify animals with favorable breeding values for all studied traits.The PCA is a good alternative in the elaboration of selection indices in Nellore breeddefined for different sex and environments.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, through data simulation, the impact of restrictions on the maximum number of full- and half-sibs selected for males and females on the level of inbreeding and genetic gain of the herd. Data came from real populations A and B, composed of Pietrain and Landrace breed pigs, respectively. To generate the simulated populations, a Fortran-language simulator was developed using the (co)variances of the breeding values and the productive and reproductive rates obtained from populations A and B. Two data files were created. The first contained the pedigree of the previous 10 years, with 21,906 and 251,343 animals in populations A and B, respectively. The second included breeding values for age to reach 110 Kg body weight, backfat thickness, and feed conversion, for both populations; longissimus dorsi muscle depth, for population A only; and number of live piglets at the 5th day of life per farrowing, for population B only. Three scenarios were simulated with ten generations by varying the restrictions on the number of full- and half-sibs selected for males and females, with 30 replicates per generation and scenario. Regardless of the mating strategy used in a closed production unit, there is an increase in inbreeding levels. Inbreeding increases are larger in populations of smaller effective size. Restrictions on the number of full- and half-sibs selected are effective in reducing increments in inbreeding. Restriction to a maximum of two full-sibs and three half-sibs for males and three full sisters for females provided the highest genetic gains. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio de simulação de dados, o impacto das restrições no número máximo de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados para machos e fêmeas no nível de endogamia e ganho genético do rebanho. Os dados originais são provenientes das populações reais A e B, compostas por suínos da raça Pietrain e Landrace, respectivamente. Para gerar as populações simuladas, foi desenvolvido um simulador em linguagem Fortran utilizando as (co)variâncias dos valores genéticos e as taxas produtivas e reprodutivas obtidas das populações A e B. Dois arquivos de dados foram criados. O primeiro continha o pedigree dos 10 anos anteriores, com 21.906 e 251.343 animais nas populações A e B, respectivamente. O segundo incluiu os valores genéticos para idade para atingir 110 Kg de peso vivo, espessura de toucinho e conversão alimentar, para ambas as populações; profundidade do músculo longissimus dorsi, apenas para a população A; e número de leitões vivos no 5º dia de vida por parto, apenas para a população B. Três cenários foram simulados com dez gerações, variando as restrições quanto ao número de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados para machos e fêmeas, com 30 repetições por geração e cenário. Independentemente da estratégia de acasalamento utilizada em um núcleo de produção fechada, há aumento nos níveis de endogamia. Aumentos de endogamia são maiores em populações de menor tamanho efetivo. Restrições ao número de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados são eficazes na redução de incrementos na endogamia. A restrição de no máximo dois irmãos completos, três meios-irmãos para machos e três irmãs completas para fêmeas fornece os maiores ganhos genéticos.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da contagem bacteriana total (CBT) sobre os constituintes do leite, verificando a influencia que as variaveis climaticas exercem sobre a CBT. Os dados utilizados foram de 1.541 unidades produtoras de leite, referentes a 15 municipios da bacia leiteira do Vale do Taquari, Rio Grande do Sul. Foram tabulados os dados de CBT, contagem de celulas somaticas (CCS) e composicao centesimal do leite, referentes ao periodo de junho de 2008 a dezembro de 2011, totalizando 44.089 amostras analisadas. As variaveis climaticas (medias mensais da temperatura media, da umidade relativa do ar e precipitacao pluviometrica) nao apresentaram correlacao significativa com a CBT. Os teores de gordura, proteina, minerais e solidos totais foram diretamente correlacionados com a CBT, enquanto que os solidos nao gordurosos e a lactose apresentaram comportamento inverso. Atraves da analise de componentes principais (ACP), auxiliada pelo metodo hierarquico aglomerativo de agrupamento, os sete tratamentos presentes no estudo foram reduzidos a quatro grupos de acordo com a similaridade. Assim, os leites com CBT superiores a 50.000 ate 500.000 UFC mL -1 , e ainda de valores acima de 500.000 ate 1.000.000 UFC mL -1 apresentam a mesma qualidade quimica e contagem de celulas somaticas, nao justificando a estratificacao de intervalos nesta amplitude de variacao para avaliacao do efeito da CBT nestes indicadores de qualidade.
