After the publication of the "CEFR Companion Volume" in 2018, a revision of the curriculum in force for the English subject in the Bilingual Sections in the Community of Madrid has been implemented. One of the main changes is the inclusion of the concept of linguistic mediation in the subject 'Advanced English' in the last stage of secondary education. In an attempt to understand how linguistic mediation strategies and activities are being developed in real classroom contexts, this study has focused on teachers' perceptions of linguistic mediation. A questionnaire and a focus group were used to examine teachers' understanding and awareness of linguistic mediation, as well as the type of mediation activities that are relevant for their students and the extent to which they include linguistic mediation activities and strategies in their lessons. Additionally, the study has shown some of the deficiencies that exist in the way linguistic mediation is currently being addressed in the classroom, as well as teachers' needs in order to better implement it.

This research focuses on the design, construction, and validation of a questionnaire that seeks to analyse the perception of the landscape amongst undergraduates studying for a Degree in Primary School Teaching at Salamanca University. The process has involved using both qualitative and quantitative techniques to test the content's validity and the construct's reliability and suitability through the participation of a panel of expert judges and a sample of 432 subjects. This has been followed by the introduction of an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the data provided by the cohort that has led to a study of the questionnaire's core characteristics, a reduction in its size, and the validation of its pertinence.

This article aims to contribute to the explanation of why bilingual education (CLIL) may reduce the differences in motivation and English proficiency commonly seen between students from different SES backgrounds (Shepherd and Ainsworth 2017). From a mixed-methods approach involving a questionnaire and focus group interviews, fourth year Secondary Education students in the Community of Madrid (Spain) were asked about their views on education, teachers, classroom practices, and their use of English outside the classroom. Results reveal significant differences in the way that students from bilingual schools and those from non-bilingual schools see their schooling experience (what they value in teachers and schools) as well as how often they speak English outside of school. This may be explained by the nature of students' motivation in each case, which may, in turn, be influenced by the schools' characteristics. Further research is needed as to whether bilingual schools are inherently more autonomy-supportive learning environments.

These past few years society has experienced a worldwide pandemic that has affected every aspect of our lives. COVID-19 has forced institutions to integrate remote learning tools and techniques, even when most lack of resources to implement online methodologies. Education has been one of the areas greatly affected by these measures, making it compulsory to invest in new educational technologies to survive and succeed in a new normality scenario. The use of Virtual Reality has emerged as a great alternative thanks to the immersive aspects and practical experiences, but the question remains the same: What is the advantage of using virtual reality in the new normality we live in today? In this paper, a case study is presented to analyze the use of VR technologies to learn healthcare techniques recreating a preclinical VR scene that mimics a real life scenario for practices. This tool was used by students of the nursing degree at the University of Oviedo, who were able to take home the VR sets and carry out the practical assignments with the non-presence of an instructor. Several indicators are assessed and analysed using data gathered from the app, such as satisfaction, usability and learning factors, specifically designed for this study. With all results provided, this study shows that VR is a valid approach for online distance learning which does not have a negative effect in the acquisition of knowledge by the students, although an initial training on VR usage might be useful to consider in future research.

Game-Based Learning (GBL) is increasingly widespread as a learning technique in the engineering studies. However, this innovative methodology may be difficult to incorporate in some subjects due to their complex contents. This paper aims at combining traditional learning methodologies with game mechanics by using an ad-hoc gaming web environment and mobile devices to analyse the academic performance and motivation in engineering studies. A comparative study was carried out with 96 first-year engineering students. In this experience, the students were randomly divided into two groups: Control Group (CG) and Experimental Group (EG). The first group made use of the traditional learning methodology used, whilst the second group combined the traditional methodology with GBL and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The obtained results show that EG students significantly improve their academic performance and motivation, expressing a succinctly greater interest in the studied subject. Therefore, the integration of GBL in the teaching methodology could have a very positive impact as well as it could greatly ease the teaching-learning process in engineering studies.

Satisfaction with the detection process of autism and its determinants was investigated using data from the Autism Spectrum Disorder in the European Union (2015-2018) network. A total of 1342 family members, including 1278 parents, completed an online survey collecting information about their experience and satisfaction with the early detection of autism in their child. Overall, the level of satisfaction varied considerably from one respondent to another. Difficulty in finding information about detection services, lack of professional guidance and support in response to first concerns, finding a diagnostic service on one's own, and a delay of more than 4 months between the confirmation of concerns and the first appointment with a specialist were all experiences individually associated with greater odds of being less satisfied. Using a dominance analysis approach, we further identified professional guidance and support in response to first concerns as the most important predictor of the level of satisfaction. These findings highlight the aspects of the process that need to be improved to enhance the experience of the detection process and are therefore relevant to guide health administrations toward actions to be implemented to this effect.

Wilson disease (WD) is a copper metabolism disorder caused by mutations in ATP7B gene, with significant clinical variability. Several studies have analyzed the prevalence and penetrance of mutations. We evaluated both characteristics for our more frequent mutations. Evaluation of 260 patients from the National Registry: clinical, analytical and genetic data. Estimation of homozygotes and total cases according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and comparison with Registry records. The estimated number of homozygotes were higher than registered: p.Met645Arg (1949/6), p.His1069Gln (20/8), p.Leu708Pro (63/24) and p.Gly869Arg (147/0). p.Met645Arg homozygotes presented less cirrhosis at diagnosis, extrahepatic disease and Kayser-Fleischer ring (KFR) and more presymptomatic cases and diagnosis after 40 years of age than p.Leu708Pro and p.His1069Gln homozygotes. p.Met645Arg homozygotes presented more late diagnosis than p.Met645Arg compound heterozygotes. Compound heterozygotes carrying p.Met645Arg or p.Gly869Arg showed less cirrhosis at diagnosis, KFR and neurological symptoms and more hepatic and presymptomatic cases, despite clearly low ceruloplasmin levels. The estimated prevalence was 1:3.785, predicting more than 10.500 patients. The widespread mutations p.Met645Arg and p.Gly869Arg show low penetrance. WD might be underdiagnosed in Spain due to less severe phenotype of the most frequent mutations, a crucial fact to avoid misdiagnosis and to offer early therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early services for ASD need to canvas the opinions of both parents and professionals. These opinions are seldom compared in the same research study. This study aims to ascertain the views of families and professionals on early detection, diagnosis and intervention services for young children with ASD. An online survey compiled and analysed data from 2032 respondents across 14 European countries (60.9% were parents; 39.1% professionals). Using an ordinal scale from 1 to 7, parents' opinions were more negative (mean = 4.6; SD 2.2) compared to those of professionals (mean = 4.9; SD 1.5) when reporting satisfaction with services. The results suggest services should take into account child's age, delays in accessing services, and active stakeholders' participation when looking to improve services.

The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-revised/follow-up (M-CHAT-R/F) was developed to reduce the number of cases requiring telephone verification. The aim of this study was to validate a Spanish version of the M-CHAT-R/F in the Spanish public health system. The M-CHAT-R/F was translated, culturally adapted, and then administered to 6625 children. Of the 39 positive screening cases, 15 children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 24 with non-ASD disorders or delays. The sensitivity was 0.79 and specificity of 0.99. Positive and negative predictive values were 0.39 and 0.99, respectively. These results are similar to the English equivalent, though observed prevalence was lower. This study supports Spanish National Health System policy makers to consider a universal ASD screening program.

Interactive Web Environments and multimedia tools are very common in engineering studies. However, these resources are very limited when graphical resolution is needed during the learning process. A learning environment that combines video and self-assessment Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools was developed to analyse this problem and to determine if the combined use of these two tools may be important in learning these subjects. A comparative study of 124 engineering students was carried out. They were randomly assigned into three groups: Group-A using only traditional tools, Group-B using traditional tools and CAD tools, and Group-C using traditional tools, CAD tools, and video training. The statistical analysis of the results showed that a greater number of students of Group-C passed the test and improved their scores. Therefore, the combined use of these two types of resources can be an important aid in the study of subjects requiring graphic tools for their learning.

Objective: The aim of this study was to disaggregate the between-patient and within-patient effects of emotion regulation (ER) on treatment outcome and explore relevant trait-like moderators of the within-patient effects. Method: Three hundred thirty-nine patients with heterogenous clinical conditions were admitted to psychotherapy at a clinical center. During the intake evaluation, patients completed the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, the Outcome Questionnaire 30, and the State Difficulties of Emotion Regulation Scale. Subsequently, patients responded to the Outcome Questionnaire 30 and State Difficulties of Emotion Regulation Scale every session for the initial five sessions, followed by assessments every two sessions until the 15th session and then every four sessions until the end of treatment. Results: Multilevel models revealed significant between- and within-patient effects of ER on clinical distress. That is, patients with lower average levels of ER difficulties showed greater benefit from treatment, and lower ER difficulties over the course of treatment were associated with lower clinical distress. Furthermore, interactive models demonstrated that lower average levels of ER throughout treatment and fewer interpersonal problems at the beginning of treatment were associated with better treatment outcome. Conclusion: These findings provide evidence supporting the role of ER as a mechanism of change. The interaction between trait-like components and state-like fluctuations of ER suggests a capitalization model for the role of ER in psychotherapy. What is the public health significance of this article?: Findings suggest that within-patient changes in difficulties in emotion regulation (relative to its mean) result in better treatment outcome for patients treated with integrative cognitive behavioral therapy in a naturalistic sample of patients from a clinical and training center. Additionally, our study provides initial evidence for a capitalization model, which suggests that patients who initially have fewer difficulties in managing their emotions and fewer interpersonal problems tend to benefit the most from positive changes in emotion regulation throughout treatment. Although integration has been formally influencing the field of psychotherapy since the 1930s, its impact gained significant momentum during the 1980s. Practical, theoretical, and scientific reasons help to explain the growing influence of integration in psychotherapy. The field of psychotherapy is characterized by many challenges which integration may change into meaningful opportunities. Nonetheless, many obstacles remain when seeking to advance integration. To appreciate the strength of integration in psychotherapy we describe an integrative, comprehensive approach to service delivery, research, and training.
