Multibeam bathymetry, sub-bottom parametric profiler, multichannel seismic reflection data and sediment cores were used to detail the nature, morpho-sedimentary and internal structure of five newly discovered submarine mud volcanoes (MVs) in the Moroccan margin of the Gulf of Cadiz. The Henriet and Subvent MVs are located at 300–400 m water depth, while Chueca, Demetrio de Armas and Puerto Real MVs are at 1100–1800 m water depth. Two main types of morphologies are identified: regular cone-shaped edifices (Subvent MV) with a pronounced crater (Henriet MV) in the eastern province; and ridge-attached oval-shaped conical edifices (Chueca, Demetrio de Armas and Puerto Real MVs) in the western province. The overall seismic architecture of these MVs is the result of successive events of mud extrusion and outbuilding alternating with periods of dormancy. The Henriet and Subvent MV system is composed of stacked bicones and intrusive complexes, which penetrated upper Miocene-Quaternary sedimentary units rooted in the Gulf of Cadiz wedge. Major phases of mud extrusion and outbuilding took place since the Late Pliocene with re-activation during mid-Pleistocene. Mud breccias interbedded with hemipelagic/contourite sediments were collected for all MVs. Cores attest to recent periods of mud outflows lasting from the Late Pleistocene (180 ky) whereas the end of MV extrusion could date back to historic times (the last 0.6 ky), giving rise to the onset of a new quiescent activity. The most active MV points out to the Subvent MV. These new MVs are formed in response to the extensional and compressional system within the Gibraltar Arc. In the eastern side, MVs are related to extensional faults forming deep sedimentary basins and forcing overpressured fluids to migrate upwards coeval with thick contourite deposits. On the western side, MVs are related to compressional ridges at the front of fold-thrust systems which act, as pathways to deep-seated fluids to ascent to seafloor.

The Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea are characterized by tectonic activity due to oblique convergence at the boundary between the Eurasian and Nubian plates. This activity has favoured a variety of tsunamigenic sources: basically, seismogenic faults and submarine landslides. The main tsunamigenic faults in the Gulf of Cadiz would comprise the thrust systems of Gorringe Ridge, Marquês de Pombal, São Vicente Canyon, and Horseshoe faults with a high susceptibility; meanwhile in the Alboran Sea would be the thrust system of the northern Alboran Ridge with high susceptibility, and the thrust systems of north Xauen and Adra margin, the transpressive segment of Al Idrissi fault, and the Yusuf-Habibas and Averroes faults, with moderate to high susceptibility. The areas with the greatest potential to generate tsunamigenic submarine landslides are in the Gulf of Cadiz, the São Vicente Canyon, Hirondelle Seamount, and Gorringe Ridge; and in the Alboran Sea are the southern and northern flanks of Alboran Ridge. Both sources are likely to generate destructive tsunamis in the Gulf of Cadiz, given its history of bigger earthquakes (>7 Mw) and larger landslides. To fully assess tsunamigenic sources, further work needs to be performed. In the case of seismogenic faults, research focuses on geometry, offsets, timing, paleoearthquakes, and recurrence, and in landslides on early post-failure evolution, age, events, and recurrence. In situ measurements, paleotsunami records, and long-term monitoring, in addition to major modelling developments, will be also necessary.

A series of six gravity cores has been used to reconstruct the depositional history of Hatton Bank (Rockall Plateau, NE Atlantic Ocean). The cores have been studied for magnetic susceptibility (MS), geochemical composition, grain size distribution, and a semi-quantitative foraminiferal association. Two main interbedded facies have been described: (i) calcareous ooze; and (ii) lithogenous silt. The study reveals prominent peaks from the MS signal, silt, Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca, Al/Ca, and Rare Earth Elements normalised by Continental Crust (REE/CC), which are sensitive indicators for Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5) and ash layers. These peaks may relate to alternations in dominance of the calcareous and lithogenic facies. The sediment displays a high percentage of carbonate in interglacial layers but is lithogenic-dominated in glacial stages. The layers with prominent lithic-rich and foraminifera-poor sediments (established as Heinrich layers) may be related to a possible palaeoclimatic effect, where freshwater discharged during iceberg melting may have reduced the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). In the study area, the mean sedimentation rates for the last glacial as ~4.2 cm ka−1 and ~1.4 cm ka−1 for the last ~18 ka (interglacial period) have been estimated. Besides this evidence, Fe/Ca and MS peaks may reflect the presence of basalt, either introduced through ice-rafting or transported and redistributed by bottom currents in the study area. Certain indices, including MS and Fe/Ca, are proposed as good proxies for detecting Heinrich events and ash layers in the Hatton Bank sediments and, in consequence, are parameters that can be used to infer strengthened/weakened NADW formation, according to stadials/interstadials. Moreover, we suggest that the northernmost boundary of the area with evidence of Heinrich events may be situated around 57°38′ N in the Hatton–Rockall area, at least for H4, based on the variation of the Mg/Ca and Fe/Ca curves.

A morphological and seismic-stratigraphic analysis of the Gulf of Cadiz area near the Strait of Gibraltar is presented in this work, focused on the sedimentary evolution of the upper and proximal middle-continental slope since the Mid-Pleistocene. Based on the analysis of seismic reflection profiles and swath bathymetry data, this work analyses the close influence of the activity of buried and outcropping diapiric ridges and late Quaternary sea-level changes on the evolution of contouritic features related to the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) and Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW), gravitational features and fluid-escape structures. The stratigraphic architecture reveals that, under active diapiric deformation, the upper slope plastered drift grew during low sea-level stages, when sediment supply was high and the ENACW swept the upper slope, contrasting with the present-day highstand situation dominated by northwest-trending MOW flow. The south-estward ENACW flow forced asymmetry and lateral migration of gullies incised in the plastered drift. Two evolutionary stages have been established: 1) After the Mid Pleistocene, activity of diapirs with a NE trend determined the location of the deepest depressions which were infilled by plastered contouritic drifts; 2) Between Late Quaternary and present, a drastic change of buried diapirs growth pattern and orientation to a NW trend enhanced slope-derived gravitational processes affecting the bottom current dynamics. Adjustments to tectonic changes led to a phase of plastered drift growth on the upper slope during which depocenters varied their distribution and orientation. In a long-term the structural control on sedimentation shows a northwestward displacement of deformation, resulting in an overall extension of the contourite depositional system to the NW. More than 70 mud volcanoes (MVs) are identified along the continental margin of the Gulf of Cadiz,,although only a few have been thoroughly sampled and direct observed. This work is a contribution to the knowledge of the Gulf of Cadiz MVs Madrid and El Cid, located in the continental slope known as Western Moroccan Field over 1300 m water depth. On Madrid MV extensive crusts and mud breccia were observed. Nevertheless in El Cid MV, the rocky fragments are of smaller size and mud breccia has not been sampled/observed on the surface. In both MVs, coral reefs colonizing rocky fragments and covering seafloor of metric size have been observed.

Full coverage bathymetric digital elevation models (DEMs) have provided an ideal input for quantitative geomorphological analysis of the Gulf of Cadiz mud volcanoes. A geomorphometric analysis of 65 structures has been carried out, by means of 7 variables, in order to quantitatively describe mud volcano size, shape and slope. Subsequently, the application of a grouping analyst ArcGIS tool enables a morphometric classification in four mud volcanoes groups. The morphometric methodology of DEM could give insights into the processes that affect the geomorphology of mud volcanoes.

The Gulf of Cadiz upper slope records the interplay between mass movement processes, mostly channelized flows along downslope-trending submarine gullies, and the action of bottom currents, in an area where paleoclimatic changes may have led to important variations of the oceanographic conditions, especially between glacial and interglacial periods. This work investigates the evolution of downslope-trending gullies in the upper slope of the Gulf of Cadiz, based on the analysis of high and very high resolution seismic record (Parasound and airgun profiles) and their correlation with regional stratigraphic interpretations. The gullies can be identified in the present-day seafloor as parallel downslope-trending features (10-15 km long, 1-1.5 km wide, up to 50 m deep). Their heads lie below the continental shelf-break and they terminate abruptly at the base of the upper slope, where they meet the Cadiz Contourite Channel along the middle slope. A seismic stratigraphic correlation allows identifying gully-like depressions in the seismic record from the Middle Pleistocene. Their high spatial and temporal variability can be related to the activity of the deep structures (particularly diapiric ridges) and in some cases to fluid escape processes that affect the region. The evolution of the gullies since the Mid Pleistocene can be established in order to infer the effect of climatic and structural changes that affect the circulation patters in the Gulf of Cadiz (i.e., changes in the trend, depth and velocity of the Mediterranean Outflow Water and other water masses such as the Eastern North Atlantic Central Water and the Superficial Atlantic Water but also changes affecting the interfases between water masses) from the variations in the sedimentation processes of the upper slope
