Abstract

We present a systematic study of the electronic structure in A-site ordered manganites as function of doping and temperature. The energy dependencies observed with soft x-ray resonant diffraction (SXRD) at the Mn L_{2,3} edges are compared with structural investigations using neutron powder diffraction as well as with cluster calculations. The crystal structures obtained with neutron powder diffraction reflect the various orbital and charge ordered phases and show an increase of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle as function of doping and temperature. Cluster calculations show that the observed spectral changes in SXRD as a function of doping are more pronounced than expected from an increase in bandwitdh due to the increase in Mn-O-Mn bond angle, and are best described by holes that are distributed at the neighbouring oxygen ions. These holes are not directly added to the Mn 3d shell, but centered at the Mn site. In contrast, the spectral changes in SXRD as function of temperature are best described by an increase of magnetic correlations. This demonstrates the strong correlations between orbitals and magnetic moments of the 3d states.

Abstract

A detailed study of the angular, energy and polarization dependences of the electric dipolar (E1: 2p->5d) and quadrupolar (E2: 2p->4f) contributions to the x-ray scattering cross-section is presented for holmium in its basal plane spiral antiferromagnetic phase at the L3 edge. The corresponding E1 and E2 scattering factors have been extracted from fits to the experimental energy line shapes taking into account for the first time a split dipole resonance. Using the imaginary part of the resonant scattering factors to retrieve the XMCD spectrum, we find qualitative agreement with the dichroic spectrum measured in transmission through a holmium foil., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

We have investigated the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of the Mott-Hubbard insulator V$_2$O$_3$ by resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction at the vanadium K-edge. Combining the information obtained from azimuthal angle scans, linear incoming polarization scans and by fitting collected data to the scattering amplitude derived from the established chemical I2/a and magnetic space groups we provide evidence of the ordering motif of anapolar moments (which results from parity violation coupling to an electromagnetic field). Experimental data (azimuthal dependence and polarization analysis) collected at space-group forbidden Bragg reflections are successfully accounted within our model in terms of vanadium magnetoelectric multipoles. We demonstrate that resonant x-ray diffraction intensities in all space-group forbidden Bragg reflections of the kind $(hkl)_m$ with odd $h$ are produced by an E1-E2 event. The determined tensorial parameters offer a test for ab-initio calculations in this material, that can lead to a deeper and more quantitative understanding of the physical properties of V$_2$O$_3$.

Abstract

Bacteria from the same species can differ widely in their gene content. In E. coli, the set of genes shared by all strains, known as the core genome, represents about half the number of genes present in any strain. While recent advances in bacterial genomics have enabled to unravel genes required for fitness in various experimental conditions at the genome scale, most studies have focused on model strains. As a result, the impact of this genetic diversity on core processes of the bacterial cell largely remains to be investigated. Here, we developed a new CRISPR interference platform for high-throughput gene repression that is compatible with most E. coli isolates and closely-related species. We applied it to assess the importance of ∼3,400 nearly ubiquitous genes in 3 growth media in 18 representative E. coli strains spanning most common phylogroups and lifestyles of the species. Our screens highlighted extensive variations in gene essentiality between strains and conditions. Unlike variations in gene expression level, variations in gene essentiality do not recapitulate the strains’ phylogeny. Investigation of the genetic determinants for these variations highlighted the importance of epistatic interactions with mobile genetic elements. In particular, we showed how mobile genetic elements can trigger the essentiality of core genes that are usually nonessential. This study provides new insights into the evolvability of gene essentiality and argues for the importance of studying various isolates from the same species in bacterial genomics.

The complexity and uncertainty surrounding projects makes the risk identification and management very difficult. Classic tools and project team’s skills based on experience and gut feeling are not enough for risk identification on time. However, there is information in project environment, shaped like weak signs that can be useful for risk identification and even for foreseeing the success of the project. This article performs a review of specialized literature on thesubject, analysing and summarizing how scientist and practitioners in project management try to apply Ansoff’s Weak Signals’ theory to project management. It will come to show that this is a research field where there is still much work to investigate and even more to implement.

Abstract

The high global generation of residue that derives from the activity of the agricultural sector makes of its efficient treatment an issue of capital importance. The treatment of wastes through biological pathways, such as anaerobic digestion (AD), is increasingly being encouraged. However, a successful performance of AD is yet to be fully achieved. AD is a microbiological process that takes place in the absence of oxygen leading to organic substrate consumption and biogas production. The waste valorization is thus twofold: energetic, as biogas combustion can be used for electricity or heat production; and agricultural, due to the feasible production of compost from the waste after AD. The agricultural wastes herein employed were chosen attending to their worldwide relevance and their role in the economic activity of Navarre (Spain). These are: artichoke, asparagus, carrot, bean, pea, green bean, cabbage, sloe and malt. Additionally, manure was assessed as result of the international stay in the Technical University of Denmark. As temperature has shown to be a determinant condition in the process, this project has covered different operation temperatures, namely mesophilic (35 °C), intermediate (42 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) ranges. Also, anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of several types of agricultural wastes has been studied throughout the whole study. Firstly, as preliminary assessments, the use of a nutrient solution in AcoD was evaluated. Results clearly showed that the use of it was beneficial for the performance of the reactor and, therefore, was implemented in the following studies. The next step was the AD of lignocellulosic substrates, artichoke and asparagus, whose composition makes of them little accessible for the microbial community. Single-stage (at the three aforementioned temperatures) and two-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD; thermophilic and mesophilic phases) were compared. The following stage of the project has been to approach the microbiology underlying the anaerobic process. To this aim, bacterial identification of AD reactors treating thermally pretreated and non-pretreated substrates (sloe and malt) was performed. Further microbiological studies based on 16S rRNA were carried out on continuous anaerobic reactors treating manure and subjected to biogas upgrading through H2 addition. These allowed confirming that biodiversity within reactors is enriched as the process progresses. Finally, this dissertation has also addressed potential inhibitors arising from the substrate. Two commonly used pesticides were added in anaerobic reactors. Scale-up has also been carried out with pesticides and further studies are recommended to be pursued. Overall results showed that mesophilic range provides the most stable operation but thermophilic range yields more efficacious removals and shorter processes. Also, AcoD leads to higher improvements than TPAD on specific substrates. Lastly, the presence of pesticides has positive effects on general performance. La alta generación de residuos a nivel mundial que se deriva de la actividad del sector agrícola hace de su tratamiento eficiente una cuestión de capital importancia. El tratamiento de desechos a través de vías biológicas, como la digestión anaerobia (DA), se fomenta cada vez más. Sin embargo, el proceso óptimo de DA está todavía por alcanzar. La DA es un proceso microbiológico que tiene lugar en ausencia de oxígeno e implica el consumo de un sustrato orgánico y la producción de biogás. La valorización del residuo es, por tanto, doble: energética, ya que la combustión de biogás puede utilizarse para producir electricidad o calor; y agrícola, debido a la posible producción de compost a partir del residuo tras su tratamiento anaerobio. Los residuos agrícolas aquí empleados se eligieron atendiendo a su relevancia mundial y a su papel en la actividad económica de Navarra (España). Estos son: alcachofa, espárrago, zanahoria, haba, guisante, judía verde, col de bruselas, endrina y malta. Además, se trabajó con estiércol a raíz de la estancia internacional en la Universidad Técnica de Dinamarca. La temperatura ha demostrado ser una condición determinante en el proceso y es por ello que este proyecto ha estudiado diferentes temperaturas de operación, a saber, mesófila (35 °C), intermedia (42 °C) y termófila (55 °C). Además, se investigó la codigestión de varios tipos de desechos agrícolas a lo largo de todo el estudio. En primer lugar, como análisis preliminar, se evaluó el uso de una solución de nutrientes en codigestión. Los resultados claramente mostraron que el uso de la misma fue beneficioso para el rendimiento del reactor y, por lo tanto, fue implementada en los siguientes estudios. El siguiente paso fue el tratamiento de sustratos lignocelulósicos, alcachofa y espárrago, cuya composición los hace poco accesibles para la comunidad microbiana. Se comparó la DA en una sola etapa (a las tres temperaturas mencionadas anteriormente) y en dos fases (DAFT, fases termofílica y mesofílica). La siguiente etapa del proyecto abordó la microbiología subyacente al proceso anaerobio. Con este objetivo, se realizó la identificación bacteriana en reactores anaerobios que trataban sustratos pretratados y no pretratados térmicamente (endrina y malta). También se llevaron a cabo otros estudios microbiológicos basados en ARNr 16S en reactores anaerobios continuos que trataban estiércol y que acoplaban un proceso de “biogas upgrading” mediante la adición de H2. Esto permitió confirmar que la biodiversidad dentro de los reactores se enriquece a medida que avanza el proceso. Finalmente, este proyecto también abordó los potenciales inhibidores que surgen del sustrato. Se agregaron en reactores anaerobios dos pesticidas de uso común. El escalado del proceso también se llevó a cabo con pesticidas y se recomienda una investigación más amplia al respecto. Los resultados generales mostraron que el rango mesofílico proporciona un proceso más estable, mientras que el rango termófilico acarrea eliminaciones más eficaces y procesos más cortos. Además, la codigestión conduce a mayores mejoras que la DAFT en sustratos específicos. Por último, la presencia de pesticidas tiene efectos positivos en los rendimientos generales.

Abstract

[ES] Objetivos: Estimar la prevalencia de obesidad y clasificarla según la estadificación de Edmonton (EOSS) en pacientes atendidos por Medicina Interna. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal. Incluyó pacientes ambulatorios mayores de 18 años con un índice de masa corporal (IMC) > 30, procedentes de 38 hospitales, entre el 1 y el 14 de febrero de 2016. Se clasificaron según EOSS y se analizaron variables clínicas, analíticas y sociodemográficas. Se consideró significación estadística con p < 0,05. Resultados: De 1.262 pacientes vistos en las consultas se seleccionaron 298 y se analizaron 265. La prevalencia de obesidad fue del 23,6%, la edad, de 62,47 ± 15,27 años y el IMC, de 36,1 ± 5,3 kg/m2. Por EOSS (0, 1, 2, 3 y 4) la prevalencia fue de 4,9, 14,7, 62,3, 15,5 y 2,64%, respectivamente. Aquellos pacientes con EOSS > 2 tenían significativamente más edad y comorbilidades. El análisis multivariante relacionó la edad (OR 1,06, p < 0,0003), la glucemia (OR 1,04, p < 0,0006), el colesterol total (OR 0,98, p < 0,02) y el ácido úrico (OR 1,32, p < 0,02) con un EOSS > 2. Un análisis de correspondencias agrupó, con un porcentaje explicativo del 78,2%, a los pacientes según su EOSS, comorbilidad, nivel de estudios, situación laboral y capacidad funcional. Conclusiones: La prevalencia de obesidad en pacientes atendidos por Medicina Interna es similar a la de la población general, aunque los pacientes son de mayor edad e IMC. El EOSS es útil para hacer una aproximación integral de los pacientes obesos, independientemente del IMC, lo que puede posibilitar la obtención de mejores resultados en salud y en calidad de vida., [EN] Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of obesity in patients treated by departments of Internal Medicine and to classify the patients according to the Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS). Material and methods: An observational, descriptive cross-sectional study included outpatients older than 18 years, with a body mass index (BMI) > 30, from 38 hospitals between the 1 st and 14th of February, 2016. We classified the patients according to the EOSS and analysed their clinical, laboratory and demographic variables. A value of P < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 1,262 patients treated in consultations, we recruited 298 and analysed 265. The prevalence of obesity was 23.6%, the mean age was 62.47 ± 15.27 years, and the mean BMI was 36.1 ± 5.3 kg/m2. According to EOSS stage (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4), the prevalence was 4.9, 14.7, 62.3, 15.5 and 2.64%, respectively. Those patients with EOSS > 2 were significantly older and had significantly more comorbidities. The multivariate analysis related age (OR 1.06; P < .0003), blood glucose (OR 1.04; P < .0006), total cholesterol (OR 0.98; P < .02) and uric acid (OR 1.32; P < .02) levels with an EOSS > 2. An analysis of correspondence grouped, with an explanatory percentage of 78.2%, the patients according to their EOSS, comorbidity, education level, employment status and functional capacity. Conclusions: The prevalence of obesity in the patients treated by Internal Medicine departments is similar to that of the general population, although the patients are older and have a higher BMI. EOSS is useful for implementing a comprehensive approach for patients with obesity, regardless of the BMI, which can help achieve better health and quality-of-life results.

Abstract

This paper describes the analysis of Roman mortars in two rooms of a villa at El Ruedo, Almedinilla, Cordoba. The techniques or procedures used included grain size distribution analysis and X ray diffraction. The decorative materials used in the various environments in the villa were found to differ in composition and therefore to have been taken from different sites (different quarries).En el presente trabajo se ha procedido al análisis de los morteros de dos estancias de la villa de El Ruedo (Almedinilla, Córdoba). Se han utilizado diferentes técnicas, tales como análisis granulométrico y difracción de rayos X. Se ha podido constatar que los materiales de las diferentes decoraciones presentan diferentes composiciones y por tanto provienen de sitios diferentes (canteras diferentes).

Abstract

Introduction: Proteins encoded by Fanconi anemia (FA) and/or breast cancer (BrCa) susceptibility genes cooperate in a common DNA damage repair signaling pathway. To gain deeper insight into this pathway and its influence on cancer risk, we searched for novel components through protein physical interaction screens. Methods: Protein physical interactions were screened using the yeast two-hybrid system. Co-affinity purifications and endogenous co-immunoprecipitation assays were performed to corroborate interactions. Biochemical and functional assays in human, mouse and Caenorhabditis elegans models were carried out to characterize pathway components. Thirteen FANCD2-monoubiquitinylation-positive FA cell lines excluded for genetic defects in the downstream pathway components and 300 familial BrCa patients negative for BRCA1/2 mutations were analyzed for genetic mutations. Common genetic variants were genotyped in 9,573 BRCA1/2 mutation carriers for associations with BrCa risk. Results: A previously identified co-purifying protein with PALB2 was identified, MRG15 (MORF4L1 gene). Results in human, mouse and C. elegans models delineate molecular and functional relationships with BRCA2, PALB2, RAD51 and RPA1 that suggest a role for MRG15 in the repair of DNA double-strand breaks. Mrg15-deficient murine embryonic fibroblasts showed moderate sensitivity to g-irradiation relative to controls and reduced formation of Rad51 nuclear foci. Examination of mutants of MRG15 and BRCA2 C. elegans orthologs revealed phenocopy by accumulation of RPA-1 (human RPA1) nuclear foci and aberrant chromosomal compactions in meiotic cells. However, no alterations or mutations were identified for MRG15/MORF4L1 in unclassified FA patients and BrCa familial cases. Abstract

The local waste co-digestion is an interesting option to tackle in reduced and isolated areas like the islands. The islands have limited territory and scarce fuel production. Moreover, organic waste can create serious environmental problems in soil, water and air. Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) is a technology fulfilling the concept of waste-to-energy (WtE) based on local resources. The valorisation of organic waste through AcoD on an island would prevent environmental impacts, while being a source of renewable energy. In this study, cow manure (outdoor and indoor), pig slurry, bird manure, kitchen waste, sewage sludge and oily lacteous waste produced on Island Terceira (Portugal) were tested in mesophilic -35 degrees C- Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) co-digestion assays. The goals were to analyse the recalcitrant and high potential produced waste and to estimate the energetic supply source on the island. The cow manure and pig slurry were used as inocula and specific methanogenic activities (SMAs) were carried out. The results showed that both substrates have a significant methanogenic activity-SMA 0.11 g-COD/(g-VSS.d) and 0.085 g-COD/(g-VSS.d), respectively. All the studied combinations were feasible in AcoD, showing TS removals in the range of 19-37%; COD removals in the range 67-78% and specific methane yields from 0.14 to 0.22 L/gCOD removed, but some differences were found. The modified Gompertz model fitted the AcoD assays (R-2 0.982-0.998). The maximum biogas production rate, R-max. was highest in the AcoD of Cow+Pig+Oily and in the Cow+Pig+Sludge with 0.017 and 0.014 L/g-VSadded.day, respectively, and the lowest in Cow+Pig+Bird with 0.010 L/g-VSadded. In our AcoD studies, the bird manure limited the performance of the process, since it was recalcitrant to anaerobic degradation. On the other hand, the oily lacteous waste showed a great potential in the anaerobic digestion. The estimated biogas production, from the best-studied condition, could cover the 11.4% of the energy supply of the inhabitants. These preliminary results would prevent the environmental impact of organic waste on the island and promote the use of local waste in a circular economy scenario.

type:text, Recently, the collinear or noncollinear character of the magnetic structure of gadolinium tetraboride (GdB4), laying the magnetic moments in the ab plane, becomes a matter of controversy. In the present study, the observations obtained from resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility measurements on a single crystal sample contain no evidence for a structural phase transition in this material above or below the Néel temperature TN. In addition to these measurements, the resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction structure factors derived from all the possible arrangements for Gd magnetic moments compatible with the room temperature tetragonal P4/mbm space group are calculated. The intensity derived with Shubnikov magnetic P4/m′b′m′ and P4′ /m′b′m space groups are found to account for the previously published resonant x-ray diffraction data on GdB4. (Both Shubnikov groups have magnetoelectric symmetry.)
