Abstract

In the world of Internet of Things (IoT), obtaining the physical location of devices has always been a task of great interest for developing increasingly complex location-based services (LBS). That is why in recent years wireless communication standards have been incorporating new additions focused on providing localization mechanisms to technologies widely used in the IoT world, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. In particular, the IEEE 802.11-2016 Wi-Fi standard introduced ranging estimation between two devices through the so-called fine time measurement (FTM) protocol, defined by the IEEE 802.11mc. FTM is not yet widespread in the IoT field, but commercial modules capable of offering this functionality at a reasonable price are starting to appear. In early 2021, the most widespread system on a chip (SOC) family among IoT devices, the ESP32-XX series, added support for this Wi-Fi standard, enabling, for the first time, the use of a standard designed for location-based systems. This article analyzes the performance of this FTM implementation by carrying out and studying several measurement campaigns in different indoor and outdoor scenarios. Additionally, this work proposes an alternative real-time implementation for distance estimation inside the ESP32 using an approach based on machine learning. Such an implementation is successfully validated in a scenario totally different than those considered for the training and test sets. Abstract

The pathogenesis of COVID‐19 warrants unravelling. Genetic polymorphism analysis may help answer the variability in disease outcome. To determine the role of KIR and HLA polymorphisms in susceptibility, progression, and severity of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, 458 patients and 667 controls enrolled in this retrospective observational study from April to December 2020. Mild/moderate and severe/death study groups were established. HLA‐A, ‐B, ‐C, and KIR genotyping were performed using the Lifecodes® HLA‐SSO and KIR‐SSO kits on the Luminex® 200™ xMAP fluoroanalyser. A probability score using multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was calculated to estimate the likelihood of severe COVID‐19. ROC analysis was used to calculate the best cut‐off point for predicting a worse clinical outcome with high sensitivity and specificity. A p ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. KIR AA genotype protected positively against severity/death from COVID‐19. Furthermore, KIR3DL1, KIR2DL3 and KIR2DS4 genes protected patients from severe forms of COVID‐19. KIR Bx genotype, as well as KIR2DL2, KIR2DS2, KIR2DS3 and KIR3DS1 were identified as biomarkers of severe COVID‐19. Our logistic regression model, which included clinical and KIR/HLA variables, categorised our cohort of patients as high/low risk for severe COVID‐19 disease with high sensitivity and specificity (Se = 94.29%, 95% CI [80.84–99.30]; Sp = 84.55%, 95% CI [79.26–88.94]; OR = 47.58, 95%CI [11.73–193.12], p < 0.0001). These results illustrate an association between KIR/HLA ligand polymorphism and different COVID‐19 outcomes and remarks the possibility of use them as a surrogate biomarkers to detect severe patients in possible future infectious outbreaks. Abstract

In this paper we study a Hamiltonization procedure for mechanical systems with velocity-depending (nonholonomic) constraints. We first rewrite the nonholonomic equations of motion as Euler-Lagrange equations, with a Lagrangian that follows from rephrasing the issue in terms of the inverse problem of Lagrangian mechanics. Second, the Legendre transformation transforms the Lagrangian in the sought-for Hamiltonian. As an application, we compare some variational integrators for the new Lagrangians with some known nonholonomic integrators., Comment: 11 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

In this paper we study Chaplygin's Reducibility Theorem and extend its applicability to nonholonomic systems with symmetry described by the Hamilton-Poincare-d'Alembert equations in arbitrary degrees of freedom. As special cases we extract the extension of the Theorem to nonholonomic Chaplygin systems with nonabelian symmetry groups as well as Euler-Poincare-Suslov systems in arbitrary degrees of freedom. In the latter case, we also extend the Hamiltonization Theorem to nonholonomic systems which do not possess an invariant measure. Lastly, we extend previous work on conditionally variational systems using the results above. Abstract

We introduce a method which allows one to recover the equations of motion of a class of nonholonomic systems by finding instead an unconstrained Hamiltonian system on the full phase space, and to restrict the resulting canonical equations to an appropriate submanifold of phase space. We focus first on the Lagrangian picture of the method and deduce the corresponding Hamiltonian from the Legendre transformation. Abstract

This paper explores a relationship between job discrimination and physical attractiveness on jobs seekers in the main cities of Ecuador (Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca). Following the experimental methodology called Audit Study, several resumes of people were sent to potential employers with the same work and academic backgrounds except for their photographs, which received a qualification of physical attractiveness -determined as such by panel of independent auditors-. The objective is to measure changes in response rates. According to results, employers in Ecuador value applicants more according to their physical attractiveness rather than their skills or academic background for a job, which can carry consequences in terms of efficiency and productivity.

43. Selective vulnerability to kainate-induced oxidative damage in different rat brain regions

Abstract

Some markers of oxidative injury were measured in different rat brain areas (hippocampus, cerebral cortex, striatum, hypothalamus, amygdala/piriform cortex and cerebellum) after the systemic administration of an excitotoxic dose of kainic acid (KA, 9 mg kg(-1) i.p.) at two different sampling times (24 and 48 h). Kainic acid was able to lower markedly (P < 0.05) the glutathione (GSH) levels in hippocampus, cerebellum and amygdala/piriform cortex (maximal reduction at 24 h). In a similar way, lipid peroxidation, as assessed by malonaldehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenal levels, significantly increased (P < 0.05) in hippocampus, cerebellum and amygdala/piriform cortex mainly at 24 h after KA. In addition, hippocampal superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with respect to basal levels by 24 h after KA application. On the other hand, brain areas such as hypothalamus, striatum and cerebral cortex seem to be less susceptible to KA excitotoxicity. According to these findings, the pattern of oxidative injury induced by systemically administered KA seems to be highly region-specific. Further, our results have shown that a lower antioxidant status (GSH and SOD) seems not to play an important role in the selective vulnerability of certain brain regions because it correlates poorly with increases in markers of oxidative damage.
