Plastics have become integral to our society due to their durability and water stability, which is achieved through strong intermolecular interactions. However, these properties also make them persistent disruptors of ecological cycles, in contrast with biological structures, which work with their environments to achieve both excellent mechanical properties and ecological integration. This study takes inspiration from the arthropod cuticle to adapt Earth's second most abundant organic molecule for use in water. The process involves the vitrification of chitosan with small traces of nickel to create a dynamic network of intermolecular bonds using environmental water, resulting in a material that increases its strength to values well above commodity plastics when wet. The approach preserves the molecule's original chemistry and therefore its seamless integration into Earth's metabolism while avoiding the use of the strong organic solvents typically associated with biomolecules. The method demonstrates the potential for a paradigm shift in manufacturing, with zero waste production of both consumables and large objects that could meet the global demand for plastic., Comment: 15 Pages and 3 Figures. Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Disorder-induced ordering and unprecedentedly high radiation tolerance in $\gamma$-phase of gallium oxide is a recent spectacular discovery at the intersection of the fundamental physics and electronic applications. Importantly, by far, these data were collected with initial samples in form of the thermodynamically stable $\beta$-phase of this material. Here, we investigate these phenomena starting instead from already metastable $\alpha$-phase and explain radically new trend occurring in the system. We argue that in contrast to that in $\beta$-to-$\gamma$ disorder-induced transitions, the O sublattice in $\alpha$-phase exhibits hexagonal close-packed structure, so that to activate $\alpha$-to-$\gamma$ transformation significant structural rearrangements are required in both Ga and O sublattices. Moreover, consistently with theoretical predictions, $\alpha$-to-$\gamma$ phase transformation requires accumulation of the substantial tensile strain to initiate otherwise impossible lattice glides. Thus, we explain the experimentally observed trends in term of the combination of disorder and strain governing the process. Finally, and perhaps most amazingly, we demonstrate atomically abrupt $\alpha$/$\gamma$ interfaces paradoxically self-organized out of the stochastic disorder., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, under peer review

In this paper we introduce the Integration Problem for principal connections. Just as a principal connection on a principal bundle $\phi:Q\rightarrow M$ may be used to split $TQ$ into horizontal and vertical subbundles, a discrete connection may be used to split $Q\times Q$ into horizontal and vertical submanifolds. All discrete connections induce a connection on the same principal bundle via a process known as the Lie or derivative functor. The Integration Problem consists of describing, for a principal connection $\mathcal{A}$, the set of all discrete connections whose associated connection is $\mathcal{A}$. Our first result is that for \emph{flat} principal connections, the Integration Problem has a unique solution among the \emph{flat} discrete connections. More broadly, under a fairly mild condition on the structure group $G$ of the principal bundle $\phi$, we prove that the existence part of the Integration Problem has a solution that needs not be unique. Last, we see that, when $G$ is abelian, given compatible continuous and discrete curvatures the Integration Problem has a unique solution constrained by those curvatures., Comment: Added Remark 3.17 and two references

In this paper we work, first, with forced discrete-time mechanical systems on the configuration space $Q$ and construct closed $2$-forms $\omega^+$ and $\omega^-$ on $Q \times Q$, that are symplectic if and only if the system is regular. For a special type of discrete force, we prove that $\omega^+$ and $\omega^-$ are invariant by the flow of the system. We also consider the Lagrangian reduction of a discrete mechanical system by a symmetry group (using an affine discrete connection derived from the discrete momentum) and prove that, under some conditions on the action, the trajectories of the reduced system (with constant discrete momentum $\mu$) can be seen as trajectories of a forced discrete mechanical system, where the discrete force is of the type analyzed before. Therefore, we prove that there is a symplectic structure that is invariant by the flow of the forced reduced system; the symplectic structure can be seen as a pullback of a canonical cotangent structure plus a magnetic term. This discrete reduction process is the (discrete) Routh reduction and the behavior obtained runs parallel to the well known case for (continuous) Routh reduction.

Disordering of solids typically leads to amorphization, but polymorph transitions, facilitated by favorable atomic rearrangements, may temporarily help to maintain long-range periodicity in the solid state. In far-from-equilibrium situations, such as atomic collision cascades, these rearrangements may not necessarily follow a thermodynamically gainful path, but may be kinetically limited. In this Letter, we focused on such crystallization instead of amorphization in collision cascades in gallium oxide (\ce{Ga2O3}). We determined the disorder threshold for irreversible $\beta$-to-$\gamma$ polymorph transition and explained why it results in elevating energy to that of the $\gamma$-polymorph, which exhibits the highest polymorph energy in the system below the amorphous state. Specifically, we demonstrate that upon reaching the disorder transition threshold, the \ce{Ga}-sublattice kinetically favors transitioning to the $\gamma$-like configuration, requiring significantly less migration for \ce{Ga} atoms to reach the lattice sites during post-cascade processes. As such, our data provide a consistent explanation of this remarkable phenomenon and can serve as a toolbox for predictive multi-polymorph fabrication., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, under review

Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
Intervals are a popular way to represent the uncertainty related to data, in which we express the vagueness of each observation as the width of the interval. However, when using intervals for this purpose, we need to use the appropriate set of mathematical tools to work with. This can be problematic due to the scarcity and complexity of interval-valued functions in comparison with the numerical ones. In this work, we propose to extend a generalization of the Sugeno integral to work with interval-valued data. Then, we use this integral to aggregate interval-valued data in two different settings: first, we study the use of intervals in a brain-computer interface; secondly, we study how to construct interval-valued relationships in a social network, and how to aggregate their information. Our results show that interval-valued data can effectively model some of the uncertainty and coalitions of the data in both cases. For the case of brain-computer interface, we found that our results surpassed the results of other interval-valued functions.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
High-frequency signals were widely studied in the last decade to identify grid and channel conditions in power lines. PLMs operating on the grid's physical layer are capable of transmitting such signals to infer information about the medium. When applied to the electrical grid, one of the key advantages of PLC is its capacity to use signals to provide information about the grid itself. This makes PLC an ideal communication technology for smart grid applications, particularly in the realms of grid monitoring and surveillance. In this paper, we focus on PLC grid information inference and provide several contributions: a classification of PLC-based applications, a review of the relevant literature, and insights to further advance the field. Our research identified contributions addressing PLMs for three main grid information inference applications: topology inference, anomaly detection, and grid cybersecurity. We utilize the outcome of our review to shed light on the current limitations of the research contributions and suggest future research directions in this field., Comment: Computer Network

Condensed Matter - Materials Science ,Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
Radiation tolerance is determined as the ability of crystalline materials to withstand the accumulation of the radiation induced disorder. Nevertheless, for sufficiently high fluences, in all by far known semiconductors it ends up with either very high disorder levels or amorphization. Here we show that gamma/beta double polymorph Ga2O3 structures exhibit remarkably high radiation tolerance. Specifically, for room temperature experiments, they tolerate a disorder equivalent to hundreds of displacements per atom, without severe degradations of crystallinity; in comparison with, e.g., Si amorphizable already with the lattice atoms displaced just once. We explain this behavior by an interesting combination of the Ga- and O- sublattice properties in gamma-Ga2O3. In particular, O-sublattice exhibits a strong recrystallization trend to recover the face-centered-cubic stacking despite the stronger displacement of O atoms compared to Ga during the active periods of cascades. Notably, we also explained the origin of the beta-to-gamma Ga2O3 transformation, as a function of the increased disorder in beta-Ga2O3 and studied the phenomena as a function of the chemical nature of the implanted atoms. As a result, we conclude that gamma/beta double polymorph Ga2O3 structures, in terms of their radiation tolerance properties, benchmark a class of universal radiation tolerant semiconductors.

Physics - Biological Physics - Abstract
The colourful wings of butterflies result from the interaction between light and the intricate chitinous nanostructures on butterflies' scales. This study demonstrates that just by reproducing the chitinous ridges present in butterfly scales (i.e., without any other secondary structure), the entire colour palette is achieved. This result was achieved using a new methodology based on the controlled reproduction of parts of the biological structure of complex chitinous systems using their native chemistry, enabling the isolation of different features' contributions. Here we isolate the contribution of the ridges and their variations as producing and modulating colour hue. The results suggest that complicated butterfly scales may be non-ideal solutions for producing colour when multifunctionality is not considered., Comment: 6 pages, 3 main figures and 2 supplementary figures

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
Biological systems evolve with minimum metabolic costs and use common components, and they represent guideposts toward a paradigm of manufacturing that is centered on minimum energy, local resources, and ecological integration. Here, a new method of metalworking that uses chitosan from the arthropod cuticle to aggregate colloidal suspensions of different metals into solid ultra-low-binder-content composites is demonstrated. These composites, which can contain more than 99.5% metal, simultaneously show bonding affinity for biological components and metallic characteristics, such as electrical conductivity. This approach stands in contrast with existing metalworking methods, taking place at ambient temperature and pressure, and being driven by water exchange. Furthermore, all the nonmetallic components involved are metabolized in large amounts in every ecosystem. Under these conditions, the composites' ability to be printed and cast into functional shapes with metallic characteristics is demonstrated. The affinity of chitometallic composites for other biological components also allows them to infuse metallic characteristics into other biomaterials. The findings and robust manufacturing examples go well beyond basic demonstrations and offer a generalizable new approach to metalworking. The potential for a paradigm shift toward biomaterials based on their unique characteristics and the principles of their manufacturing methods is highlighted., Comment: 15 pages, 3 main figures, 4 videos, supplementary materials and methods, and 3 supplementary figures

Lately, studying social dynamics in interacting agents has been boosted by the power of computer models, which bring the richness of qualitative work, while offering the precision, transparency, extensiveness, and replicability of statistical and mathematical approaches. A particular set of phenomena for the study of social dynamics is Web collaborative platforms. A dataset of interest is r/place, a collaborative social experiment held in 2017 on Reddit, which consisted of a shared online canvas of 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels co-edited by over a million recorded users over 72 hours. In this paper, we designed and compared two methods to analyze the dynamics of this experiment. Our first method consisted in approximating the set of 2D cellular-automata-like rules used to generate the canvas images and how these rules change over time. The second method consisted in a convolutional neural network (CNN) that learned an approximation to the generative rules in order to generate the complex outcomes of the canvas. Our results indicate varying context-size dependencies for the predictability of different objects in r/place in time and space. They also indicate a surprising peak in difficulty to statistically infer behavioral rules towards the middle of the social experiment, while user interactions did not drop until before the end. The combination of our two approaches, one rule-based and the other statistical CNN-based, shows the ability to highlight diverse aspects of analyzing social dynamics.

This historiographical essay explores the relationship between postmodern criticism and postcolonial studies within the context of the challenges of historiography today. Starting with a reconstruction of the role of the historical discipline and historiography in the modern colonial expansion, we situate the postmodern crisis as one that centrally crosses historiographical discourses and has produced a series of bifurcations and isolations concerning postcolonial debates in the rest of the social sciences and humanities. We analyze the bifurcation produced between the field of postmodern criticism and postcolonial studies, on the one hand, and the estrangement between historiographical production and postcolonial criticism, on the other. The present article aims to offer new hypotheses that will explain the divergence between historiographical production and postcolonial studies.

First, we estimate physical indicators from tracking data. Then, we contextualize each player's run to understand better the purpose and circumstances in which it is done, adding a new dimension to the creation of team and player profiles. Finally, we assess the value-added by off-ball high-intensity runs by linking with a possession-value model. Defect engineering is foundational to classical electronic device development and for emerging quantum devices. Here, we report on defect engineering of silicon single crystals with ion pulses from a laser accelerator with ion flux levels up to 10^22 ions/cm^2/s. Low energy ions from plasma expansion of the laser-foil target are implanted near the surface and then diffuse into silicon samples that were locally pre-heated by high energy ions. We observe low energy ion fluences of ~10^16 cm^-2, about four orders of magnitude higher than the fluence of high energy (MeV) ions. In the areas of highest energy deposition, silicon crystals exfoliate from single ion pulses. Color centers, predominantly W and G-centers, form directly in response to ion pulses without a subsequent annealing step. We find that the linewidth of G-centers increase in areas with high ion flux much more than the linewidth of W-centers, consistent with density functional theory calculations of their electronic structure. Laser ion acceleration generates aligned pulses of high and low energy ions that expand the parameter range for defect engineering and doping of semiconductors with tunable balances of ion flux, damage rates and local heating.

In these notes, we present an alternative version of discrete Dirac mechanics using Dirac structures. We first establish a notion of 'continuous Dirac system' and then propose a definition of discrete Dirac system, proving that it is possible to recover discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems as particular cases. We also note that this approach allows for kinematic as well as variational constraints.
