We present star formation rates (SFR), the mass-metallicity relation (MZR), and the SFR-dependent MZR across redshifts 4 to 10 using 81 star-forming galaxies observed by the JWST NIRSpec employing both low-resolution PRISM and medium-resolution gratings, including galaxies from the JADES GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields, the JWST-PRIMAL Legacy Survey, and additional galaxies from the literature in Abell 2744, SMACS-0723, RXJ2129, BDF, COSMOS, and MACS1149 fields. These galaxies span a 3 dex stellar mass range of $10^7 < M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} < 10^{10}$, with an average SFR of $7.2 \pm 1.2 M_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$ and an average metallicity of $12+{\rm log(O/H)} = 7.91 \pm 0.08$. Our findings align with previous observations up to $z=8$ for the MZR and indicate no deviation from local universe FMR up to this redshift. Beyond $z=8$, we observe a significant deviation $\sim 0.27$ dex) in FMR, consistent with recent JWST findings. We also integrate CEERS (135 galaxies) and JADES (47 galaxies) samples with our data to study metallicity evolution with redshift in a combined sample of 263 galaxies, revealing a decreasing metallicity trend with a slope of $0.067 \pm 0.013$, consistent with IllustrisTNG and EAGLE, but contradicts with FIRE simulations. We introduce an empirical mass-metallicity-redshift (MZ-$z$ relation): $12+{\rm log(O/H)}=6.29 + 0.237 \times{\rm log}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) - 0.06 \times (1+z)$, which accurately reproduces the observed trends in metallicity with both redshift and stellar mass. We present our current update on the gas-phase chemical reactions and spectral lines of TiO in the spectral synthesis code Cloudy. For this purpose, we have added 229 Ti-related reactions in the chemical network. In addition, we consider 230 fine-structure energy levels, the corresponding 223 radiative transitions, and 444 collisional transitions with ortho and para H$_2$ and predict 66 TiO lines. We perform spectroscopic simulations of TiO emission from the circumstellar region of the oxygen-rich red supergiant VY Canis Majoris to validate our update. Our model reproduces the observed TiO column density. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk817 during an intensive multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign for 16 months. Here, we examine the behavior of narrow UV absorption lines seen in HST/COS spectra, both during the campaign and in other epochs extending over 14 years. We conclude that while the narrow absorption outflow system (at -3750 km/s with FWHM=177 km/s) responds to the variations of the UV continuum as modified by the X-ray obscurer, its total column density (logNH =19.5 cm-2) did not change across all epochs. The adjusted ionization parameter (scaled with respect to the variations in the Hydrogen ionizing continuum flux) is log UH =-1.0. The outflow is located at a distance smaller than 38 parsecs from the central source, which implies a hydrogen density of nH > 3000 cm-3. The absorption outflow system only covers the continuum emission source and not the broad emission line region, which suggests that its transverse size is small (< 1e16 cm), with potential cloud geometries ranging from spherical to elongated along the line of sight., Comment: 18 pages, 12 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

X-ray binaries (XRBs) often exhibit spectral residuals in the 0.5 to 2 keV range, known as the "1 keV residual/1 keV feature", with variable centroid and intensity across different systems. Yet a comprehensive scientific explanation of the variability of the 1 keV feature has remained largely elusive. In this paper, we explain for the first time the origin and variability of the 1 keV feature in XRBs using the spectral synthesis code \textsc{Cloudy}. We constructed line blends for the emission and absorption lines and study the variability of these blends with ionization parameters, temperature, and column density. We conducted a sample study involving five XRBs including two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs): NGC 247 ULX-1, NGC 1313 X-1, a binary X-ray pulsar: Hercules X-1, and two typical low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs): Cygnus X-2, and Serpens X-1, providing a comprehensive explanation of the 1 keV feature observed across these targets., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, Submitted to MNRAS

We present the results of the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations taken as part of the ongoing, intensive multi-wavelength monitoring program of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 by the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping 2 (AGN STORM 2) Project. The campaign revealed an unexpected and transient obscuring outflow, never before seen in this source. Of our four XMM-Newton/NuSTAR epochs, one fortuitously taken during a bright X-ray state has strong narrow absorption lines in the high-resolution grating spectra. From these absorption features, we determine that the obscurer is in fact a multi-phase ionized wind with an outflow velocity of $\sim$5200 km s$^{-1}$, and for the first time find evidence for a lower ionization component with the same velocity observed in absorption features in the contemporaneous HST spectra. This indicates that the UV absorption troughs may be due to dense clumps embedded in diffuse, higher ionization gas responsible for the X-ray absorption lines of the same velocity. We observe variability in the shape of the absorption lines on timescales of hours, placing the variable component at roughly 1000 $R_g$ if attributed to transverse motion along the line of sight. This estimate aligns with independent UV measurements of the distance to the obscurer suggesting an accretion disk wind at the inner broad line region. We estimate that it takes roughly 200 days for the outflow to travel from the disk to our line of sight, consistent with the timescale of the outflow's column density variations throughout the campaign.

We report the detection of continuum excess in the rest-frame UV between 3000 {\AA} and 3550 {\AA} in the JWST/NIRSpec spectrum of GN-z11, a galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 10.603. The shape of the continuum excess resembles a Balmer continuum but has a break around 3546 {\AA} in the rest frame, which is 100 {\AA} bluewards to the Balmer limit at 3646 {\AA}. A Balmer continuum model alone cannot fit the spectrum, implying a different origin for the continuum excess. The absence of the Balmer jump indicates an electron temperature of $\sim 3\times 10^4$ K, which is significantly higher than the temperature of $T_{e}({\rm O^{2+}}) \approx 1.3\times 10^{4}$ K inferred from [OIII]$\lambda 4363$. The temperature difference must result from mixing of different ionized regions: the Balmer emission mainly arises from dense and hot clouds in the Broad Line Region, close to the accreting black hole, whereas the forbidden lines originate from less dense and colder gas in the host galaxy (although these ionized regions are kinematically similar in GN-z11 due to its small BH mass). We propose a potential explanation for the observed continuum excess to come from a complex of FeII emission, which shows a characteristic jump bluewards to the Balmer limit as previously seen in the spectra of many lower-redshift quasars. Through comparisons with Cloudy models, we show an Fe abundance or an overall metallicity above $\sim 1/3$ solar is likely needed. Besides the FeII emission, part of the small blue bump might also be associated with an OIII Bowen fluorescent line, a line often enhanced in dense AGN-ionized gas. High resolution X-ray spectra reveal hidden cooling flows depositing cold gas at the centres of massive nearby early-type galaxies with little sign of normal star formation. Optical observations are revealing that a bottom-heavy Initial Mass Function is common within the inner kpc of similar galaxies. We revive the possibility that a low-mass star formation mode is operating due to the high thermal pressure in the cooling flow, thus explaining the accumulation of low-mass stars. We further explore whether such a mode operated in early, high-redshift galaxies and has sporadically continued to the present day. The idea links observed distant galaxies with black holes which are ultramassive for their stellar mass, nearby red nuggets and massive early-type galaxies. Near IR spectroscopic reverberation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) potentially allows the infrared (IR) broad line region (BLR) to be reverberated alongside the disc and dust continua, while the spectra can also reveal details of dust astro-chemistry. Here, we describe results of a short pilot study (17 near-IR spectra over a 183 d period) for Mrk 509. The spectra give a luminosity-weighted dust radius of $\langle R_{\mathrm{d,lum}} \rangle = 186 \pm 4$ light-days for blackbody (large grain dust), consistent with previous (photometric) reverberation campaigns, whereas carbon and silicate dust give much larger radii. We develop a method of calibrating spectral data in objects where the narrow lines are extended beyond the slit width. We demonstrate this by showing our resultant photometric band light curves are consistent with previous results, with a hot dust lag at >40 d in the K band, clearly different from the accretion disc response at <20 d in the z band. We place this limit of 40 d by demonstrating clearly that the modest variability that we do detect in the H and K band does not reverberate on time-scales of less than 40 d. We also extract the Pa$\beta$ line light curve, and find a lag which is consistent with the optical BLR H$\beta$ line of $\sim$70-90 d. This is important as direct imaging of the near-IR BLR is now possible in a few objects, so we need to understand its relation to the better studied optical BLR., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

In this paper, we address a natural question at the intersection of combinatorial game theory and computational complexity: "Can a sum of simple tepid games in canonical form be intractable?" To resolve this fundamental question, we consider superstars, positions first introduced in Winning Ways where all options are nimbers. Extending Morris' classic result with hot games to tepid games, we prove that disjunctive sums of superstars are intractable to solve. This is striking as sums of nimbers can be computed in linear time. We present new ALMA observations of CO, CN, CS, HCN and HCO$^{+}$ absorption seen against the bright and compact radio continuum sources of eight massive galaxies. Combined with archival observations, they reveal two distinct populations of molecular clouds, which we identify by combining CO emission and absorption profiles to unambiguously reveal each cloud's direction of motion and likely location. In galaxy disks, we see clouds with low velocity dispersions, low line of sight velocities and a lack of any systemic inflow or outflow. In galactic cores, we find high velocity dispersion clouds inflowing at up to 550 km/s. This provides observational evidence in favour of cold accretion onto galactic centres, which likely contributes to the fuelling of active galactic nuclei. We also see a wide range in the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratios of the absorption lines. This is likely the combined effect of hierarchical substructure within the molecular clouds and continuum sources which vary in size with frequency., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Accurately estimating risk in real-time is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of many applications involving autonomous robot systems. This paper presents a novel, generalizable algorithm for the real-time estimation of risks created by external disturbances on multirotors. Unlike conventional approaches, our method requires no additional sensors, accurate drone models, or large datasets. It employs motor command data in a fuzzy logic system, overcoming barriers to real-world implementation. Inherently adaptable, it utilizes fundamental drone characteristics, making it applicable to diverse drone models. The efficiency of the algorithm has been confirmed through comprehensive real-world testing on various platforms. It proficiently discerned between high and low-risk scenarios resulting from diverse wind disturbances and varying thrust-to-weight ratios. This work delves into the expanding role of large language models (LLMs) in generating artificial data. LLMs are increasingly employed to create a variety of outputs, including annotations, preferences, instruction prompts, simulated dialogues, and free text. As these forms of LLM-generated data often intersect in their application, they exert mutual influence on each other and raise significant concerns about the quality and diversity of the artificial data incorporated into training cycles, leading to an artificial data ecosystem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to aggregate various types of LLM-generated text data, from more tightly constrained data like "task labels" to more lightly constrained "free-form text". We then stress test the quality and implications of LLM-generated artificial data, comparing it with human data across various existing benchmarks. Despite artificial data's capability to match human performance, this paper reveals significant hidden disparities, especially in complex tasks where LLMs often miss the nuanced understanding of intrinsic human-generated content. This study critically examines diverse LLM-generated data and emphasizes the need for ethical practices in data creation and when using LLMs. It highlights the LLMs' shortcomings in replicating human traits and behaviors, underscoring the importance of addressing biases and artifacts produced in LLM-generated content for future research and development. We announce the C23.01 update of Cloudy. This corrects a simple coding error, present since $\sim$ 1990, in one routine that required a conversion from the line-center to the mean normalization of the Ly$\alpha$ optical depth. This affects the destruction of H I Ly$\alpha$ by background opacities. Its largest effect is upon the Ly$\alpha$ intensity in high-ionization dusty clouds, where the predicted intensity is now up to three times stronger. We fit the UV/optical lightcurves of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 to produce maps of the accretion disk temperature fluctuations $\delta T$ resolved in time and radius. The $\delta T$ maps are dominated by coherent radial structures that move slowly ($v \ll c$) inwards and outwards, which conflicts with the idea that disk variability is driven only by reverberation. Instead, these slow-moving temperature fluctuations are likely due to variability intrinsic to the disk. We test how modifying the input lightcurves by smoothing and subtracting them changes the resulting $\delta T$ maps and find that most of the temperature fluctuations exist over relatively long timescales ($\sim$100s of days). We show how detrending AGN lightcurves can be used to separate the flux variations driven by the slow-moving temperature fluctuations from those driven by reverberation. We also simulate contamination of the continuum emission from the disk by continuum emission from the broad line region (BLR), which is expected to have spectral features localized in wavelength, such as the Balmer break contaminating the $U$ band. We find that a disk with a smooth temperature profile cannot produce a signal localized in wavelength and that any BLR contamination should appear as residuals in our model lightcurves. Given the observed residuals, we estimate that only $\sim$20% of the variable flux in the $U$ and $u$ lightcurves can be due to BLR contamination. We describe laboratory experiments to generate X-ray photoionized plasmas of relevance to accretion-powered X-ray sources such as neutron star binaries and quasars, with significant improvements over previous work. A key quantity is referenced, namely the photoionization parameter. This is normally meaningful in an astrophysical steady-state context, but is also commonly used in the literature as a figure of merit for laboratory experiments that are, of necessity, time-dependent. We demonstrate emission-weighted values of {\xi} > 50 ergcm/s using laser-plasma X-ray sources, with higher results at the centre of the plasma which are in the regime of interest for several astrophysical scenarios. Comparisons of laboratory experiments with astrophysical codes are always limited, principally by the many orders of magnitude differences in time and spatial scales, but also other plasma parameters. However useful checks on performance can often be made for a limited range of parameters. For example, we show that our use of a keV line source, rather than the quasi-blackbody radiation fields normally employed in such experiments, has allowed the generation of the ratio of inner-shell to outer-shell photoionization expected from a blackbody source with ~keV spectral temperature. We compare calculations from our in-house plasma modelling code with those from Cloudy and find moderately good agreement for the time evolution of both electron temperature and average ionisation. However, a comparison of code predictions for a K-beta argon X-ray spectrum with experimental data reveals that our Cloudy simulation overestimates the intensities of more highly ionised argon species. We describe the 2023 release of the spectral synthesis code Cloudy. Since the previous major release, migrations of our online services motivated us to adopt git as our version control system. This change alone led us to adopt an annual release scheme, accompanied by a short release paper, the present being the inaugural. Significant changes to our atomic and molecular data have improved the accuracy of Cloudy predictions: we have upgraded our instance of the Chianti database from version 7 to 10; our H- and He-like collisional rates to improved theoretical values; our molecular data to the most recent LAMDA database, and several chemical reaction rates to their most recent UDfA and KiDA values. Finally, we describe our progress on upgrading Cloudy's capabilities to meet the requirements of the X-ray microcalorimeters aboard the upcoming XRISM and Athena missions, and outline future development that will make Cloudy of use to the X-ray community., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in RMxAA

An intensive reverberation mapping campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk817 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed significant variations in the response of the broad UV emission lines to fluctuations in the continuum emission. The response of the prominent UV emission lines changes over a $\sim$60-day duration, resulting in distinctly different time lags in the various segments of the light curve over the 14 months observing campaign. One-dimensional echo-mapping models fit these variations if a slowly varying background is included for each emission line. These variations are more evident in the CIV light curve, which is the line least affected by intrinsic absorption in Mrk817 and least blended with neighboring emission lines. We identify five temporal windows with distinct emission line response, and measure their corresponding time delays, which range from 2 to 13 days. These temporal windows are plausibly linked to changes in the UV and X-ray obscuration occurring during these same intervals. The shortest time lags occur during periods with diminishing obscuration, whereas the longest lags occur during periods with rising obscuration. We propose that the obscuring outflow shields the ultraviolet broad lines from the ionizing continuum. The resulting change in the spectral energy distribution of the ionizing continuum, as seen by clouds at a range of distances from the nucleus, is responsible for the changes in the line response., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

A two-body gas-phase reaction rate coefficient can be given by the usual Arrhenius-type formula which depends on temperature. The UMIST Database for Astrochemistry is a widely used database for reaction rate coefficients. They provide fittings for coefficients valid over a particular range of temperatures. The permissible upper-temperature limits vary over a wide range: from 100 K to 41000K. A wide range of temperatures occurs in nature; thus, it requires evaluating the rate coefficients at temperatures outside the range of validity. As a result, a simple extrapolation of the rate coefficients can lead to unphysically large values at high temperatures. These result in unrealistic predictions. Here we present a solution to prevent the gas-phase reaction coefficients from diverging at a very high temperature. The AGN STORM 2 campaign is a large, multiwavelength reverberation mapping project designed to trace out the structure of Mrk 817 from the inner accretion disk to the broad emission line region and out to the dusty torus. As part of this campaign, Swift performed daily monitoring of Mrk 817 for approximately 15 months, obtaining observations in X-rays and six UV/optical filters. The X-ray monitoring shows that Mrk 817 was in a significantly fainter state than in previous observations, with only a brief flare where it reached prior flux levels. The X-ray spectrum is heavily obscured. The UV/optical light curves show significant variability throughout the campaign and are well correlated with one another, but uncorrelated with the X-rays. Combining the Swift UV/optical light curves with Hubble UV continuum light curves, we measure interband continuum lags, $\tau(\lambda)$, that increase with increasing wavelength roughly following $\tau(\lambda) \propto \lambda^{4/3}$, the dependence expected for a geometrically thin, optically thick, centrally illuminated disk. Modeling of the light curves reveals a period at the beginning of the campaign where the response of the continuum is suppressed compared to later in the light curve - the light curves are not simple shifted and scaled versions of each other. The interval of suppressed response corresponds to a period of high UV line and X-ray absorption, and reduced emission line variability amplitudes. Recently, we have uncovered Hidden Cooling Flows (HCF) in the X-ray spectra of the central Brightest Galaxies of 11 clusters, 1 group and 2 elliptical galaxies. Here we report such flows in a further 15 objects, consisting of 8 clusters, 3 groups, 3 ellipticals and 1 Red Nugget. The mass cooling rates are about 1 Msun/yr in the ellipticals, 2 to 20 Msun/yr in the groups and 20 to 100 Msun/yr in regular clusters. The Red Nugget, MRK1216, has an HCF of 10 Msun/yr. We review the fate of the cooled gas and investigate how some of it might accrete onto the central black hole. The gas is likely to be very cold and to have fragmented into low mass stars and smaller objects before being swallowed whole, with little luminous output. If such a scenario is correct and operates at a few Msun/yr then such objects may host the fastest growing black holes in the low redshift Universe. Localization plays a critical role in the field of distributed swarm robotics. Previous work has highlighted the potential of relative localization for position tracking in multi-robot systems. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology provides a good estimation of the relative position between robots but suffers from some limitations. This paper proposes improving the relative localization functionality developed in our previous work, which is based on UWB technology. Our new approach merges UWB telemetry and kinematic model into an extended Kalman filter to properly track the relative position of robots. We performed a simulation and validated the improvements in relative distance and angle accuracy for the proposed approach. The performance of speech and events recognition systems significantly improved recently thanks to deep learning methods. However, some of these tasks remain challenging when algorithms are deployed on robots due to the unseen mechanical noise and electrical interference generated by their actuators while training the neural networks. Ego-noise reduction as a preprocessing step therefore can help solve this issue when using pre-trained speech and event recognition algorithms on robots. In this paper, we propose a new method to reduce ego-noise using only a microphone array and less than two minute of noise recordings. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the best covariance matrix candidate is selected from a dictionary created online during calibration and used with the Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) beamformer. Results show that the proposed method runs in real-time, improves the signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) by up to 10 dB, decreases the word error rate (WER) by 55\% in some cases and increases the Average Precision (AP) of event detection by up to 0.2., Comment: Submitted to IROS 2023

We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. Using 190,000 spectra from the seventeenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the ultraviolet emission line properties in z=2 quasars. Specifically, we quantify how the shape of CIV 1549A and the equivalent width (EW) of HeII 1640A depend on the black hole mass and Eddington ratio inferred from MgII 2800A. Above L/L_Edd>0.2, there is a strong mass dependence in both CIV blueshift and HeII EW. Large CIV blueshifts are observed only in regions with both high mass and high accretion rate. Including X-ray measurements for a subsample of 5,000 objects, we interpret our observations in the context of AGN accretion and outflow mechanisms. The observed trends in HeII and 2 keV strength are broadly consistent with theoretical QSOSED models of AGN spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for low spin black holes, where the ionizing SED depends on the accretion disc temperature and the strength of the soft excess. High spin models are not consistent with observations, suggesting SDSS quasars at z=2 may in general have low spins. We find a dramatic switch in behaviour at L/L_Edd<0.2: the ultraviolet emission properties show much weaker trends, and no longer agree with QSOSED predictions, hinting at changes in the structure of the broad line region. Overall the observed emission line trends are generally consistent with predictions for radiation line driving where quasar outflows are governed by the SED, which itself results from the accretion flow and hence depends on both the SMBH mass and accretion rate., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS. Gordeev and Haeusler [GH19] claim that each tautology $\rho$ of minimal propositional logic can be proved with a natural deduction of size polynomial in $|\rho|$. This builds on work from Hudelmaier [Hud93] that found a similar result for intuitionistic propositional logic, but for which only the height of the proof was polynomially bounded, not the overall size. They arrive at this result by transforming a proof in Hudelmaier's sequent calculus into an equivalent tree-like proof in Prawitz's system of natural deduction, and then compressing the tree-like proof into an equivalent DAG-like proof in such a way that a polynomial bound on the height and foundation implies a polynomial bound on the overall size. Our paper, however, observes that this construction was performed only on minimal implicational logic, which we show to be weaker than the minimal propositional logic for which they claim the result (see Section 4.2). Simply extending the logic systems used to cover minimal propositional logic would not be sufficient to recover the results of the paper, as it would entirely disrupt proofs of a number of the theorems that are critical to proving the main result. Relying heavily on their aforementioned work, Gordeev and Haeusler [GH20] claim to establish NP=PSPACE. The argument centrally depends on the polynomial bound on proof size in minimal propositional logic. Since we show that that bound has not been correctly established by them, their purported proof does not correctly establish NP=PSPACE.

We have recently uncovered Hidden Cooling Flows (HCFs) in the XMM RGS spectra of 3 clusters of galaxies, Centaurus, Perseus and A1835. Here we search for them in a wider sample of objects: the X-ray brightest group NGC5044; 4 moderate X-ray luminosity clusters Sersic 159, A262, A2052 and RXJ0821; and 3 high X-ray luminosity clusters RXJ1532, MACS 1931 and the Phoenix cluster. Finally we examine two Virgo elliptical galaxies, M49 and M84. All statistically allow the addition of an HCF. We find a significant detection of an HCF in 6 clusters and 2 elliptical galaxies. The hidden mass cooling rates are 5 to 40 Solar masses per year for the normal clusters, 1000 Solar masses per year or more for the extreme clusters and 1 to 2 Solar masses per year for the elliptical galaxies. Examination of emission lines in high-velocity resolution optical spectra of the Orion Nebula confirms that the velocity component on the red wing of the main ionization front emission line is due to backscattering in the Photon Dominated Region. This scattered light component has a weak wavelength dependence that is consistent with either general interstellar medium particles or particles in the foreground of the Orion Nebula Cluster. An anomalous line-broadening component that has been known for 60+ years is characterized in unprecedented detail. Although this extra broadening may be due to turbulence along the line-of-sight of our spectra, we explore the possibility that it is due to \alf\ waves in conditions where the ratio of magnetic and thermal energies are about equal and constant throughout the ionized gas.

Galaxies often contain large reservoirs of molecular gas which shape their evolution. This can be through cooling of the gas -- which leads to star formation, or accretion onto the central supermassive black hole -- which fuels AGN activity and produces powerful feedback. Molecular gas has been detected in early-type galaxies on scales of just a few tens to hundreds of solar masses by searching for absorption against their compact radio cores. Using this technique, ALMA has found absorption in several brightest cluster galaxies, some of which show molecular gas moving towards their galaxy's core at hundreds of km/s. In this paper we constrain the location of this absorbing gas by comparing each galaxy's molecular emission and absorption. In four galaxies, the absorption properties are consistent with chance alignments between the continuum and a fraction of the molecular clouds visible in emission. In four others, the properties of the absorption are inconsistent with this scenario. In these systems the absorption is likely produced by a separate population of molecular clouds in close proximity to the galaxy core and with high inward velocities and velocity dispersions. We thus deduce the existence of two types of absorber, caused by chance alignments between the radio core and: (i) a fraction of the molecular clouds visible in emission, and (ii) molecular clouds close to the AGN, in the process of accretion. We also present the first ALMA observations of molecular emission in S555, Abell 2390, RXC J1350.3+0940 and RXC J1603.6+1553 -- with the latter three having molecular masses of $>10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Radiation pressure-driven outflows from luminous accreting supermassive black holes are an important part of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. The effective Eddington limit, based on absorption of radiation by dust, not electron scattering, is revealed in the plane of AGN absorption column density $N_{\mathrm{H}}$ as a function of Eddington fraction $\lambda_{\mathrm{Edd}} = L_{\mathrm{bol}}/L_{\mathrm{Edd}}$, where a lack of objects is seen in the region where the effective limit is exceeded. Here, we conduct radiation simulation using the CLOUDY code to deduce the radiative force applied onto dusty gas at the nucleus and compare to the gravitational force to reveal the outflow region and its boundary with long-lived absorption clouds. We also investigate how the outflow condition is affected by various AGN and dust properties and distribution. As expected, the dust abundance has the largest effect on the $N_{\mathrm{H}} - \lambda_{\mathrm{Edd}}$ diagram since the higher the abundance, the more effective the radiative feedback, while the impact of the inner radius of the dusty gas shell, the shell width and the AGN spectral shape are relatively negligible. The presence of other central masses, such as a nuclear star cluster, can also make the feedback less effective. The AGN spectral energy distribution depends on the mass of the black hole and its spin. Though the effects of the AGN SED on the diagram are relatively small, the fraction of ionizing ultraviolet (UV) photons from the blackbody accretion disc is affected more by black hole mass than spin, and can influence the efficiency of radiation pressure., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 11 pages, 7 figures

Atomic and molecular data are required to conduct detailed calculations of microphysical processes performed by CLOUDY to predict the spectra of a theoretical model. One of the three databases CLOUDY currently utilizes is CHIANTI version 7.1. CHIANTI version 10.0.1 is available, but its format has changed. CLOUDY is incompatible with the newer version. We have developed a script to convert the version 10.0.1 database into its version 7.1 format so that CLOUDY does not have to change every time there is a new CHIANTI version with an evolved format. This study outlines the steps taken by the script for this version format change. We have also found a modest number of significant changes to spectral line intensities/luminosities calculated by CLOUDY with the adoption of CHIANTI version 10.0.1. We present the first intensive study of the variability of the near-infrared coronal lines in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use data from a one-year long spectroscopic monitoring campaign with roughly weekly cadence on NGC 5548 to study the variability in both emission line fluxes and profile shapes. We find that in common with many AGN coronal lines, those studied here are both broader than the low-ionisaton forbidden lines and blueshifted relative to them, with a stratification that implies an origin in an outflow interior to the standard narrow line region. We observe for the first time [S VIII] and [Si VI] coronal line profiles that exhibit broad wings in addition to narrow cores, features not seen in either [S IX] or [Si X]. These wings are highly variable, whereas the cores show negligible changes. The differences in both the profile shapes and variability properties of the different line components indicate that there are at least two coronal line regions in AGN. We associate the variable, broad wings with the base of an X-ray heated wind evaporated from the inner edge of the dusty torus. The coronal line cores may be formed at several locations interior to the narrow line region: either along this accelerating, clumpy wind or in the much more compact outflow identified with the obscurer and so emerging on scales similar to the outer accretion disc and broad line region., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures and 6 tables. The radiative cooling time of the hot gas at the centres of cool cores in clusters of galaxies drops down to 10 million years and below. The observed mass cooling rate of such gas is very low, suggesting that AGN feedback is very tightly balanced or that the soft X-ray emission from cooling is somehow hidden from view. We use an intrinsic absorption model in which the cooling and coolest gas are closely interleaved to search for hidden cooling flows in the Centaurus, Perseus and A1835 clusters of galaxies. We find hidden mass cooling rates of between 10 to 500 Msunpyr as the cluster mass increases, with the absorbed emission emerging in the Far Infrared band. Good agreement is found between the hidden cooling rate and observed FIR luminosity in the Centaurus Cluster. The limits on the other two clusters allow for considerable hidden cooling. The implied total mass of cooled gas is much larger than the observed molecular masses. In this paper, we discuss atomic processes modifying the soft X-ray spectra in from optical depth effects like photoelectric absorption and electron scattering suppressing the soft X-ray lines. We also show the enhancement in soft X-ray line intensities in a photoionized environment via continuum pumping. We quantify the suppression/enhancement by introducing a "line modification factor ($f_{\rm mod}$)." If 0 $\leq$ $f_{\rm mod}$ $\leq$ 1, the line is suppressed, which could be the case in both collisionally-ionized and photoionized systems. If $f_{\rm mod}$ $\geq$ 1, the line is enhanced, which occurs in photoionized systems. Hybrid astrophysical sources are also very common, where the environment is partly photoionized and partly collisionally-ionized. Such a system is V1223 Sgr, an intermediate polar binary. We show the application of our theory by fitting the first-order Chandra MEG spectrum of V1223 Sgr with a combination of \textsc{Cloudy}-simulated additive cooling-flow and photoionized models. In particular, we account for the excess flux for O~VII, O~VIII, Ne~IX, Ne~X, and Mg~XI lines in the spectrum found in a recent study, which could not be explained with an absorbed cooling-flow model.

Here we present our current updates of the gas-phase chemical reaction rates and molecular lines in the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY, and its implications in spectroscopic modelling of various astrophysical environments. We include energy levels, radiative and collisional rates for HF, CF$^+$, HC$_3$N, ArH$^+$, HCl, HCN, CN, CH, and CH$_2$. Simultaneously, we expand our molecular network involving these molecules. For this purpose, we have added 561 new reactions and have updated the existing 165 molecular reaction rates involving these molecules. As a result, CLOUDY now predicts all the lines arising from these nine molecules. In addition, we also update H$_2$--H$_2$ collisional data up to rotational levels $J$=31 for $v$=0. We demonstrate spectroscopic simulations of these molecules for a few astrophysical environments. Our existing model for globules in the Crab nebula successfully predicts the observed column density of ArH$^+$. Our model predicts a detectable amount of HeH$^+$, OH$^+$, and CH$^+$ for the Crab nebula. We also model the ISM towards HD185418, W31C, NGC 253, and our predictions match with most of the observed column densities within the observed error bars. Very often molecular lines trace various physical conditions. Hence, this update will be very supportive for spectroscopic modelling of various astrophysical environments, particularly involving sub-millimeter and mid-infrared observations using ALMA and JWST, respectively., Comment: 40 pages, 6 figures, 18 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The depletion of elements onto dust grains is characterized using a generalized depletion strength $F_*$ for any sightline, and trend-line parameters $A_X, B_X$ and $z_X$. The parameters $A_X, B_X$ and $z_X$ define the relative depletion pattern, for which values are published in previous works. The present study uses these parameters to calculate post-depleted gas-phase abundances of 15 different elements while varying $F_*$ from 0 to 1. An analysis of emergent strong spectral line intensities, obtained by inputting the calculated abundances into a cloudy model, shows that the depletion strength has a non-trivial effect on predicted emission lines and the thermal balance of the ionized cloud. The amount by which elements deplete also affects the coolant abundances in the gas. Furthermore, it was found that each of the parameters - metallicity, ionization parameter U and depletion strength $F_*$ have degenerate effects on the emission-line strengths, and thermal balance of the interstellar medium (ISM). Finally, comparing our results to a sample of H II regions using data obtained from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey (MaNGA) revealed that the best-fit $F_*$ was approximately 0.5. However, this best-fit value does not work well for all metallicities. Removing the sulfur depletion and changing the nitrogen abundance pattern can improve the fit. As a result, extra observational evidence is required to verify the choices of parameters and better constrain the typical depletion strength in galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Steadily accreting white dwarfs (WDs) are efficient sources of ionization and thus, are able to create extended ionized nebulae in their vicinity. These nebulae represent ideal tools for the detection of accreting WDs, given that in most cases the source itself is faint. In this work, we combine radiation transfer simulations with known H and He accreting WD models, providing for the first time the ionization state and the emission line spectra of the formed nebulae as a function of the WD mass, the accretion rate and the chemical composition of the accreted material. We find that the nebular optical line fluxes and radial extent vary strongly with the WD's accretion properties, peaking in systems with WD masses of 0.8 - 1.2 $\rm~M_{\odot}$. Projecting our results on the 'BPT' diagnostic diagrams, we show that accreting WDs nebulae possess characteristics distinct from those of H II-like regions, while they share similar line ratios with the galactic low-ionization emission-line regions. Finally, we compare our results to the relevant constraints imposed by the lack of ionized nebulae in the vicinity of supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) and Type Ia supernova remnants - sources which are related to steadily accreting WDs. The large discrepancies uncovered by our comparison rule out any steadily accreting WD as a potential progenitor of the studied remnants and additionally require the ambient medium around the SSSs to be less dense than 0.2 $\rm~cm^{-3}$. Real life implementations of distributed swarm robotics are rare. The standardization of a general purpose swarm robotics platform could greatly accelerate swarm robotics towards real life implementations. The SwarmUS platform is an open-source hardware and software on-board embedded system designed to be added onto existing robots while providing them with swarm features, thus proposing a new take on the platform standardization problem. These features include a distributed relative localization system based on Ultra-Wideband, a local communication system based on Wi-Fi and a distributed coordination system based on the Buzz programming language between robots connected within a SwarmUS platform. Additionally, a human-swarm interaction mobile application and an emulation of the platform in the Robot Operating System (ROS) is presented.
