- Abstract
The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

HOUSE dust mites ,HUMAN settlements ,COMMUNITY organization ,REPRODUCTION ,MITES ,DERMATOPHAGOIDES - Abstract
House dust mites (HDM) are globally distributed in human habitats. The most favourable locations for their development are carpets, curtains, couches, mattresses and pillows. This association with indoor environments makes HDM one of the most important sources of indoor allergens. Distribution and concentration may be influenced by food availability, temperature and, mostly, humidity. This study investigated seasonal and environmental patterns in HDM communities in order to understand the influence of housing type and climate conditions on their richness, abundance and concentration. We sampled four different types of housing (brick houses, wooden houses, carpeted apartments and tiled-floor apartments) and four habitats (double mattress, couch, curtain and carpet). We carried out four samplings in 2010, each one in a season of the year, and collected a total of 128 samples. We analysed richness, abundance and concentration of all sample units. We found a total of 1653 mites.Blomia tropicalis(van Bronswijk, Cock & Oshima, 1973),Dermatophagoides farinaeHughes, 1961 andTarsonemus fusariiCooreman, 1941 were the most abundant species. All variables tended to decrease from winter to summer. Wooden and carpeted houses had higher richness and abundance than brick houses and tiled-floor apartments. Curtain had the highest concentration, followed by double mattress, couch and carpet. We found seasonal and environmental variations in the community structure of HDM. Concluding, we demonstrated the prevalence of allergenic indoor mites in the coldest months, in more favourable conditions of wooden and carpeted houses. This study indicates that through careful regulation of climatic conditions, housekeeping policies and laundering procedures, dust mite and allergen levels can be controlled even in a climate suitable for the development of breeding mite populations. MITES ,SETAE ,THORACIC vertebrae ,SPECIES - Abstract
Two new species of Tydeidae are described, Brachytydeus lorenzatus sp. nov. and Quasitydeus feresi sp. nov. Brachytydeus lorenzatus sp. nov. differs from B. aegyptiaca (Rasmy & El Bagoury, 1979) by having a reticulated area on the region of f1 and f2, dorsal setae smooth, solenidion vI shorter than or equal to the width of tarsus I, most setae on dorsal shield shorter than the length between their bases and setae d forked distally. The new species is distinguished from B. scutatus Silva, Rocha & Ferla, 2013 by having a slightly reticulate area on the aspidosoma, near setae bo, all dorsal setae slender and club-shaped. Quasitydeus feresi sp. nov. differs from the only other species of the genus, Q. ricensis (Baker, 1970), by having all dorsal setae simple and serrated, similar in shape. Eleven tydeoid species are reported also from several plants native to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is the second species of Brachytydeus Thor, 1931 described from and the second species described for Quasitydeus Kazmierski, 1996. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Egg-laying hens and free and wild birds may introduce pathogenic organisms and ectoparasites to farms linked to commercial poultry farm systems. Two mite species are reported as an economic problem for the poultry industry worldwide: Dermanyssus gallinae (Dermanyssidae) and Megninia ginglymura (Analgidae). The present study aimed to evaluate the bioecology of mite fauna especially D. gallinae and M. ginglymuraassociated with commercial egg-laying hens, and recognize which are infestation periods, favorable environments and efficient predators of these ectoparasites. Megninia ginglymura was the most abundant in feathers and more frequent in the battery cage than in free-range chickens, representing 98% of the species. Both of these husbandry systems showed high infestations at different times. On the other hand, D. gallinae was the most abundant species in traps (98.9%), being found mostly in the winter from free-range chickens, with more than twice the mites when compared with battery cage chickens. This work revealed a possible new tool for biological control of ectoparasites: Cheyletus malaccensis could be considered the main natural enemy with the best potential for controlling these ectoparasites associated with laying hens and should be taken into consideration for future biological control studies, becoming an additional strategy for controlling D. gallinae principally. Phytophagous mites (Acari) are agricultural pests that cause productivity and economic losses. Mite infestation is stressful for plants, hindering the development and harming photosynthetic structures and storage organs. In order to combat such damage, plants utilize molecular and physiological modifications, as well as the production of mite-inhibitory compounds. In this review, we focus on the main phytophagous mites that infest the most commercially important cereals – rice (Oryza sativaL.), corn (Zea maysL.) and wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) – summarizing the responses of the plants – physiological and molecular alterations – to mite infestation. - Abstract
Infestation of phytophagous mite Schizotetranychus oryzaein rice causes critical yield losses. To better understand this interaction, we employed Multidimensional Protein Identification Technology (MudPIT) approach to identify differentially expressed proteins. We detected 18 and 872 unique proteins in control and infested leaves, respectively, along with 32 proteins more abundant in control leaves. S. oryzaeinfestation caused decreased abundance of proteins related to photosynthesis (mostly photosystem II-related), carbon assimilation and energy production, chloroplast detoxification, defense, and fatty acid and gibberellin synthesis. On the contrary, infestation caused increased abundance of proteins involved in protein modification and degradation, gene expression at the translation level, protein partitioning to different organelles, lipid metabolism, actin cytoskeleton remodeling, and synthesis of jasmonate, amino acid, and molecular chaperones. Our results also suggest that S. oryzaeinfestation promotes cell-wall remodeling and interferes with ethylene biosynthesis in rice leaves. Proteomic data were positively correlated with enzymatic assays and RT-qPCR analysis. Our findings describe the protein expression patterns of infested rice leaves and suggest that the acceptor side of PSII is probably the major damaged target in the photosynthetic apparatus. These data will be useful in future biotechnological approaches aiming to induce phytophagous mite resistance in rice.

In this work we reported injuries caused by the spider mite Oligonychus yothersi on Vitis vinifera leaves and we also investigate the sex ratio of this species under laboratory conditions. To access the aspects regarding reproduction, females were placed individually in arenas made of V. vinifera leaves to oviposit and all progeny were mounted on slides when they reached adulthood to confirm the offspring sex. Our study showed that O. yothersi reproduces by thelytokous /arrhenotokous parthenogenesis, generating low number of males. Additionally, we found vine plants with leaf browning, particularly on the adaxial surface, where mites were usually found.

- Abstract
House dust mites (HDM) are the main source of aeroallergens worldwide, yet epidemiological differences between socioeconomic factors in association with this medical condition have not been studied in the south region of Brazil. To assess the prevalence of HDM in two socioeconomically distinct populations of patients with allergic asthma or rhinitis, the differences between samples from houses of high-income families and low-income families were analyzed. Mite samples were collected between July and December 2015, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The HDM were Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae (Hughes; Acari: Pyroglyphidae). Also, other non-pyroglyphid house mites were identified in dust samples: Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank; Acari: Acaridae), Chortoglyphus arcuatus, and Cheyletus malaccensis. Identification of species was performed through morphological keys with a stereomicroscope and a phase optical microscope. A total of 104 homes was evaluated (low-income group: n = 53; high-income group, n = 51). We found a total of 721 mites, representing 11 species, in 93 (89%) houses. In the remaining houses, no mites were found. We observed no significant differences of species composition between the groups studied. However, the number of mites was significantly higher in the low-income group (P < 0.001). D. pteronyssinus was the predominant species detected, with 286 mites (39.6%). D. farinae was not detected in any sample. Our results show that living-rooms from low-income families present higher numbers of HDM.
