Late Pleistocene fossils from southern Brazil provide a unique opportunity to study the diet and habitat use of the extant franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) prior to human influence. Here, we subject 19 fossil and 21 contemporary specimens to stable carbon and oxygen isotope analysis (after first ruling out diagenesis via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The two groups differ in their isotopic composition (PERMANOVA, p < .01), with fossils yielding more disparate d13C values and recent samples more disparate d18O values. Their isotopic niches show an overlap of -20%, with that of the fossils being slightly wider (SEAc = 2.25-2 versus 1.84-2). This paper describes a possible fossil egg proceeding from the Bauru Group, Late Cretaceous of Paraná Basin, Brazil. External morphology, dimensions, texture and shell ornamentation examined under electron microscopy show close resemblance to the Recent podocnemidid chelonian eggs. Association with bony material in the outcrop suggests that it is related to a species of Podocnemis. Computerized tomography reveals a high density outer region corresponding to the shell component layers, and successive layers with decreasing density towards the nucleus. An area of high density in the central region may represent remains of an embryo.

Mesosaurs were small amphibious tetrapods that lived in western Gondwana during the early Permian or even earlier, when temperate Carboniferous-Permian conditions initiated after the glaciations that affected the southern region of Pangea. In this contribution, we applied traditional linear regression morphometrics to analyse proportions of both the skull and limb bones in more than 100 mesosaur specimens. The analyses revealed that all mesosaur bones scale remarkably close to a model of geometrical similarity (isometry), and that this pattern is particularly strong in long bones and also in the skull. These results indicate that juvenile and adult mesosaurs do not display appreciable change in bone proportions, meaning that there are few or no noticeable differences between them during growth. The well-defined isometry, and particularly, the high interrelation between metatarsals and phalanges permit us to suggest that the mesosaur hind limb is subject to notable modularity. This evidence strongly argues that the differences previously described to support three mesosaur species in Western Gondwana, might instead reflect natural intraspecific variability, taphonomic features or even possible sexual dimorphism, as recently suggested. Our study also reinforces the general plesiomorphic structure of the mesosaur skeleton, which along with some cranial specializations for ecological fitness and the evidence of strong isometric growth as we demonstrate herein, may suggest new hypotheses of relationships for mesosaurs which thus would position them as more basal amniotes than previously thought. Enamel microstructure is studied here in Toxodon sp., a notoungulate from the Pleistocene of South America. The material includes 13 specimens from outcrops in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul states, Brazil. Analyses of ground sections of upper and lower incisors, premolars, molars, and deciduous premolars by scanning electron microscopy reveal Schmelzmuster with three enamel types: modified radial enamel (MRE), associated with the enamel-dentine junction (EDJ); Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), an intermediary layer with decussating prisms; and radial enamel (RE), a layer placed next to the outer enamel surface. Microstructural features vary in each tooth category, on the buccal and lingual sides, as well as in the different regions of each tooth. The proportion of RE increases in the occlusal area of I2, which commonly exhibits intense wear, and may be related to abrasion resistance. HSB thickness ranges from 6 to 20 prisms, with the thickest portions placed in areas with intense masticatory loads. The most concentrated packing densities of HSB in the upper incisors and lower premolars suggest these teeth bore the greatest biomechanical demands. Incisors and cheek teeth show differentiation of Schmelzmuster, suggesting dental antagonistic contact areas, as well as leading and trailing edges. Deciduous premolars exhibit enamel in the early stages of development, and a neonatal line is observed almost parallel to the EDJ, possibly related to biological stress during birth. The EDJ is scalloped in all dental categories, with varying sizes and shapes. Larger and more pronounced scallops are observed in I2, i3, p4, and in the enamel folds of the upper and lower cheek teeth, associated with microstructural features indicative of greater biomechanical demands. Microstructural enamel findings presented here corroborate morphological trends in the dentition of Notoungulata related to hypsodonty, providing greater resistance to the consumption of abrasive diets in these euhypsodont-toothed herbivores. Sacisaurus agudoensis is the only silesaurid known from the Triassic beds of the Santa Maria Supersequence and the correlation of its type locality to the other Triassic deposits of south Brazil has always been controversial. In an attempt to improve this, a handful of dinosaur and cynodont remains found associated to S. agudoensis are here described and compared. The anatomy of the sauropodomorph is more similar to that of Norian forms such as Pantydraco caducus and Unaysaurus tolentinoi than to that of Carnian taxa such as Saturnalia tupiniquim and Pampadromaeus barberenai. The cynodonts recovered based on isolated teeth include a brasilodontid and a Riograndia-like form. This assemblage is consistent with a Norian age, as is also suggested by local stratigraphic correlation, which positions the site in the Caturrita Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modifications on the cheek teeth and dentary bone (loss of dental tissues on the extra-alveolar portion of the cheek teeth, and corrosion on the surface of the dentary bone) of fossil specimens of medium to giant South American rodents (mainly neoepiblemids) from the Neogene (Brazil and Argentina) are documented here. These features are similar to those observed in teeth and bones of small hypsodont rodents (recent and Quaternary fossils) that were subjected to digestive process by predators/scavengers. Based on comparisons, we tentatively hypothesize that acid-etching resulting from digestive processes could have caused the modifications in the specimens, providing evidence of a palaeoecological interaction between neoepiblemids (and other rodents), and predators or scavengers.
