This work investigates both the moisture dependence of thermal properties and the hygric behavior of cement mortars incorporating different proportions of micronized miscanthus fibers up to ∼7 wt%. The experimental program encompasses thermal characterization at dry (10 % RH), moderate (50 % RH), and saturated (100 % RH) states of samples, along with hygric characterization of the various mortar specimens through sorption-desorption tests, water vapor permeability assessment, Moisture Buffer value (MBV) determination, and capillary absorption tests. Thermal measurements showed a significant decrease in thermal conductivity with the addition of fibers. For a given biobased mortar composition, conductivity values were almost identical at dry/moderate RH level but exhibited an increase at saturation. This shift was attributed to the fibers' absorptive properties, which lead to a higher water content within the samples in saturated humidity environments. Collectively, the moisture sorption, moisture buffering capacities, water vapor permeability, and capillary absorption properties demonstrated consistent enhancement with rising fiber content, confirming the significant impact of plant fibers on the material's hygrothermal properties. In addition, the GAB model (Guggenheim- Anderson- de Boer) was used to fit the sorption and desorption isotherms, yielding a good correspondence with experimental data. Finally, mortars with the higher fiber contents (M7.5 F and M10F with 5.70 wt% and 6.94 wt% of fibers, respectively) combined high hygroscopicity and low thermal conductivity values (even under moisture-saturated conditions), making them promising candidates for applications requiring both good hygric performance and effective insulation properties.

In this study, digital light processing (DLP) was used to achieve 3D-printed composite materials containing photosensitive resin blended with starch and hemp fibers. The synthesis of 3D-printed composites was performed without heating, according to various material combinations ranging from pure photosensitive resin to a mixture of three phases, including resin, starch, and hemp fibers, with the weight content for each reinforcing phase reaching up to a third of the formulation. The morphology, composition, and structure of the 3D-printed composites were assessed using infrared spectroscopy, laser granulometry, X-ray diffraction, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, thermal behavior and mechanical performance were studied using calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile testing combined with high-speed optical imaging. The results showed that the post-curing step is a leading factor for improving the mechanical performance of the 3D-printed composites. In addition, hemp fiber or starch did not alter the tensile strength. However, the largest reinforcing effect in terms of stiffness improvement was obtained with starch. Additionally, starchy composites demonstrated the strongest dependence of heat capacity on operating temperature.

This study aims at showing the potential of additive manufacturing as a new processing route for designing future insulators in the building sector. Polycarbonate (PC) is studied as a possible candidate for designing these new insulators. This polymer offers several advantages, among them fire resistance and stability of its physical properties at high temperatures. The 3D printing of PC is attempted using fused deposition modelling technology. The printing temperature and infill rate are varied to achieve optimal mechanical and thermal characteristics. The results show that an optimal printing temperature of 280 °C is needed to achieve high tensile performance. In addition, thermal properties including thermal conductivity and effusivity increase with the increase of the infill rate in opposition to the thermal diffusivity decrease.

The aim of this work is to explore the manufacturing of insulation structures using fused filament deposition of biosourced materials. The approach considers printing of Polylactic acid (PLA) and PLA-flax (PF) structures using varied infill density and printing temperatures. Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermal Gravimetry analysis are performed to study thermal behaviour of PLA and PF and derive weight content of fibres within PF. Thermal measurements show a strong dependence of thermal conductivity with infill density and slightly improved thermal insulation of PF compared to PLA. Moreover, both PF and PLA show a hydrophobic behaviour unlike conventional green concretes based on hemp or flax. In addition, both scanning electron and optical microscopies show marked morphological changes induced by the laying down process for PF. This latter exhibits a more complex and tortuous microstructure compared to PLA marked by the presence of inter-filament porosity. This work concludes with superior hygrothermal properties of PLA and PF compared to other biosourced materials such as hemp or flax concrete. This work also concludes with the beneficial role of flax fibres that provides better hygrothermal properties to the printed structures as well as on the need to optimize the infill characteristics including density and cell morphology density.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the hygrothermal and mechanical properties of innovative mortar mixtures reinforced with natural fibers. Fibers extracted from palm stems (PS) and hemp (HF) were evaluated at different percentages. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations showed that the PS fibers have rough surfaces and very complex microstructures. Prior to their incorporation into the mortar, the fibers were subjected to different treatments to reduce their hydrophilic character. The employed treatments showed good efficiency in reducing the water absorption of both PS and HF fiber types. Furthermore, the mortar mixtures incorporating these fibers exhibited low thermal conductivity and excellent moisture buffering capacity. Indeed, the moisture buffer value (MBV) of the investigated mixtures ranged between 2.7 [g/(%HR·m2)] and 3.1 [g/(%HR·m2)], hence providing them excellent moisture regulator character. As expected, the fiber mortar mixtures showed very high porosity and low compressive strength ranging between 0.6 and 0.9 MPa after 28 days of age. The low-environmental footprint materials developed in this study are intended for thermal insulation and building filling.

In this article, both numerical and experimental investigations were carried out on the durability of hemp concrete. For this, an accelerated aging process was performed using cycles of immersion, freezing and drying. Then, an experimental campaign was enabled to determine heat and mass transfer properties, as well as the microstructure for both aged and reference materials. Observations using a digital microscope showed the appearance of cracks at the interfaces and an increase of the porosity of about 6%. These microstructural modifications imply a non-negligible evolution of heat and mass transfer properties. Thus, a numerical model for the prediction of heat and mass transfer was developed. The prediction of physical phenomena was computed using both aged and reference material properties. It highlights the aging effects on the behaviour of the hemp concrete. The numerical simulation results showed significant discrepancies between the predicted relative humidity values for the two configurations (aged and reference) of about 18% and a maximum phase shift of 40 min, due to the amplification of the mass transfer kinetics after aging. Nevertheless, few deviations in temperature values were found. Thus, after aging, sensible heat fluxes were overestimated compared to the reference case, unlike latent heat fluxes, where an underestimation was shown.
