The COSIMA instrument onboard the Rosetta spacecraft collected and analyzed samples of individual particles from the coma of Comet67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Initial results of the analysis of several particles have been presented elsewhere while analyses of the organic component of the dust particles has been shown to compare favor ably to laboratory spectra of IOM extracted from the Orguil and Murchison meteorites. Here we will compare the spectra of the same two particles to laboratory spectra of organic grain coatings produced via Surface Mediated Reactions of CO, H2 and N2 on amorphous iron silicate grains.

The primitive solar nebula was a violent and chaotic environment where high energy collisions, lightning, shocks and magnetic re-connection events rapidly vaporized some fraction of nebular dust, melted larger particles while leaving the largest grains virtually undisturbed. At the same time, some tiny grains containing very easily disturbed noble gas signatures (e.g., small, pre-solar graphite or SiC particles) never experienced this violence, yet can be found directly adjacent to much larger meteoritic components (chondrules or CAIs) that did. Additional components in the matrix of the most primitive carbonaceous chondrites and in some chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles include tiny nebular condensates, aggregates of condensates and partially annealed aggregates. Grains formed in violent transient events in the solar nebula did not come to equilibrium with their surroundings. To understand the formation and textures of these materials as well as their nebular abundances we must rely on Nucleation Theory and kinetic models of grain growth, coagulation and annealing. Such models have been very uncertain in the past: we will discuss the steps we are taking to increase their reliability.

It has become increasingly clear over the past decade that high temperature processes played important roles in the Primitive Solar Nebula. Unfortunately, basic data, such as the vapor pressures of Fe, Ni, Co or SiO have not been measured over the appropriate temperature range (near T approx. 2000K), but must be extrapolated from lower temperature measurements often made more than 50 years ago. The extrapolation of the available data to higher temperatures can be quite complex (e.g., see [1] for SiO vapor pressures) and can depend on other factors such as the oxygen fugacity or the presence of hydrogen gas not accounted for in the original measurements. Moreover, modern technology has made possible more accurate measurements of such quantities over a wider temperature range. We have acquired a commercial Thermo-Cahn Thermogravimetric system capable of vacuum operation to 1700C and measurement of a 10g change in sample mass using up to a 100g sample, with microgram accuracy. With this new system we have initiated a series of basic vapor pressure measurements on simple metals such as Fe[2] and Ni[3] with the intention to extend such measurements to more complex systems once we gain sufficient experience.

Temperatures high enough to vaporize even refractory solids existed in the midplane of the solar nebula during its earliest evolutionary stages and played an important role in the processing of materials that went into the formation of the inner planets and asteroids. A variety of such high-T materials have been identified in primitive chondritic meteorites. These include chemically zoned FeNi metal grains that are generally believed to have formed directly by gas-solid condensation from a gas of approximately solar composition. These FeNi particles provide important information about the times scales of formation and physical transport mechanisms in the nebula, as well as formation temperature, pressure and gas chemistry. Currently, however, the interpretation of the chemical signatures in these FeNi particles rests on less than perfect information about the condensation sequence of siderophile elements. For example much, if not all, of the thermodynamic data for the vapor pressures of moderately refractory metals , such as Fe, Ni and Co, do not cover the desired temperature range. As a result, quite large extrapolations are needed. These extrapolations can be complex and uncertain due to factors such as oxygen fugacity or the presence of hydrogen gas.

Graphitic smokes were condensed in noble gas atmospheres and analyzed for xenon. Results show trapping of amounts greater than found in chondritic carbonaceous residues. Sites saturated at low pressures. No mass-dependent fractionation was observed.

We have undertaken a project called STARDUST which is a collaboration with Italian and American investigators. The goals of this program are to study the condensation and coagulation of refractory materials from the vapor and to study the properties of the resulting grains as analogs to cosmic dust particles. To reduce thermal convective currents and to develop valuable experience in designing an experiment for the Gas-Grain Simulation Facility aboard Space Station, Freedom we have built and flown a new chamber to study these processes under periods of microgravity available on NASA's KC-135 Research Aircraft. Preliminary results from flights with magnesium and zinc are discussed.

The formation, properties and chemical dynamics of microparticles are important in a wide variety of technical and scientific fields including synthesis of semiconductor crystals from the vapour, heterogeneous chemistry in the stratosphere and the formation of cosmic dust surrounding the stars. Gravitational effects on particle formation from vapors include gas convection and buoyancy and particle sedimentation. These processes can be significantly reduced by studying condensation and agglomeration of particles in microgravity. In addition, to accurately simulate particle formation near stars, which takes place under low gravity conditions, studies in microgravity are desired. We report here the STARDUST experience, a recent collaborative effort that brings together a successful American program of microgravity experiments on particle formation aboard NASA KC-135 Reduced Gravity Research Aircraft and several Italian research groups with expertise in microgravity research and astrophysical dust formation. The program goal is to study the formation and properties of high temperature particles and gases that are of interest in astrophysics and planetary science. To do so we are developing techniques that are generally applicable to study particle formation and properties, taking advantage of the microgravity environment to allow accurate control of system parameters.

The condensation behavior of refractory grains near stars was investigated in an experiment which used a specially designed apparatus flown aboard NASA's Reduced Gravity aircraft. The apparatus consisted of a furnace in which a solid material (Zn or Mg) is vaporized into a temperature- and pressure-controlled chamber. Light scattered from the grains was recorded using a video system, and temperature measurements in the chamber were recorded throughout the microgravity period. The video and the temperature data are compared to models that predict the time dependence of the temperature- and vapor-pressure profiles to deduce the condensation behavior of the material. The joint U.S.-Italian program (named Stardust) for these experiments, designed to study refractory grain formation and aggregation, was set up to develop experimental and computational techniques for condensation studies under microgravity conditions.

Initial results are presented from airborne experiments investigating the vapor phase condensation in microgravity, carried out in the framework of the Stardust international program. Special attention is given to the design and operation of the experimental equipment, which includes the furnace for producing vapors from different materials and the cloud chamber in which the vapor nucleation occurs. A two-part mathematical model was developed to describe the transport processes in the nucleation chamber. Results obtained from three experimental series were conducted with Mg and Zn aboard NASA's KC-135 reduced-gravity research aircraft showed that nucleation front (smoke cloud) was quite different in appearance in microgravity from that typically observed at 1-g condition. The Mg and Zn particles exhibited significant differences in shape; there was some evidence of coagulation.

A short description of the program Stardust whose goal is to study the formation and properties of high temperature particles and gases, including silicate and carbonaceous materials, that are of interest in astrophysics and planetary science, is given. The international program was carried out in microgravity conditions in parabolic flight. A description of the laboratory equipment, conceived to perform experimental tests in reduced gravity conditions, and which is based on the gas evaporation technique, is given. The gas evaporation technique utilizes one or more heated crucible to vaporize solids materials (SiO, Mg) in a low pressure of inert or reactive gas inside of a vacuum bell jar. The vapor pressures of the materials are controlled by the temperature of the crucibles. The temperature and pressure of inert gas are also controlled. By varying the vapor pressure relative to the gas temperature and pressure, the conditions for substantial grain condensation can be controlled and grain formation measured using light scattering techniques. Thus the partial pressure for grain condensation, can be measured as a function of temperature. The gas evaporation technique has the advantage that complex chemical systems can be studied by using multiple crucibles each containing solid source material. Experimental results and future trends are addressed.

Modifications to the nucleation apparatus suggested by our first microgravity flight campaign are complete. These included a complete 'repackaging' of the equipment into three racks along with an improved vapor spout shutter mechanism and additional thermocouples for gas temperature measurements. The 'repackaged' apparatus was used in two KC-135 campaigns: one during the week of June 3, 1991 consisting of two flights with Mg and two with Zn, and another series consisting of three flights with Zn during the week of September 23, 1991. Our effort then was focused on the analysis of these data, including further development of the mathematical models to generate the values of temperature and supersaturation at the observed points of nucleation. The efforts to apply Hale's Scaled Nucleation Theory to our experimental data have met with only limited success, most likely due to still inadequate temperature field determination. Work on the development of a preliminary particle collector system designed to capture particles from the region of nucleation and condensation, as well as from other parts of the chamber, are discussed.
