The hyperfine structure of 40 spectral lines of singly ionized thulium (Tm II) in emission spectra from a hollow cathode discharge lamp measured with a Fourier transform spectrometer in the wavelength range from 335 nm to 2345 nm has been investigated. As a result of the analysis, the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants $A$ for 27 fine structure levels of Tm II were determined for the first time. Rotationally-resolved Fourier-transform spectra of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) $A^1\Sigma^+_u\sim b^3\Pi_u \rightarrow X^1\Sigma^+_g$ of K$_2$ molecules were recorded and analyzed yielding 4053 term values of spin-orbit (SO) coupled $A \sim b$ complex of $^{39}$K$_2$ isotopologue with ca 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ accuracy. Their compilation with 1739 term values from previously published sources allowed to cover the energy range [9955, 17436] cm$^{-1}$ from the bottom of the lower-lying $b^3\Pi_u$ state up to the vicinity of the atomic asymptote $4s\;^2{\rm S}_{1/2}$ + $4p\;^2{\rm P}_{1/2}$, with rotational quantum number $J\in[0,149]$. The experimental data were processed by a direct 6$\times$6 coupled-channel (CC) deperturbation treatment, which accounted explicitly for both SO and electronic-rotational interactions between six states: $A^1\Sigma^+_u$($0$), $b^3\Pi_u$(0,1,2), $c^3\Sigma_u$(1), and $B^1\Pi_u$(1). The initial parameters of the global deperturbation model have been estimated in the framework of {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations applying multi-referenced configuration-interaction and coupled-clusters methods. The interatomic potentials analytically defined for $A$ and $b$ states, as well as SO-splitting of the triplet $b$ state and $A\sim b$ SO-coupling functions have been refined to fit 5792 term values of the $^{39}$K$_2$ isotopologue, whereas the rest parameters were fixed on their {\it ab initio} values. The resulting mass-invariant parameters of the CC model reproduced the overall rovibronic term energies of the $A \sim b$ complex of $^{39}$K$_2$ with the accuracy, which is well within the experimental errors. This deperturbation analysis provided the refined dissociation energy $T_{dis}$=17474.569(5) cm$^{-1}$ and the long-range coefficient $C_3^{\Sigma}$ = 5.501(4) $\times10^5$cm$^{-1}$ A$^3$ relevant to the non-relativistic atomic limit $4s$+$4p$., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

The relative intensity distribution in the rotationally resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectra belonging to the $E(4)^1\Sigma^+\to (a^3\Sigma^+_1,X^1\Sigma^+)$ band systems of the KCs molecule was analyzed. The experimental intensities in doublet $P$,$R$ progressions assigned to spin-allowed $E\to X$ and spin-forbidden $E\to a$ transitions up to their common ground dissociation limit were described in the framework of a coupled-channels (CC) deperturbation model applied for the interacting \Xstate\ and \astate\ states. The CC intensity simulation was based solely on fixed electronic structure parameters as functions of the internuclear distance $R$, namely: accurate empirical potential energy curves for all three states, \emph{ab initio} estimates for matrix elements $A(R)$ of the hyperfine structure (HFS) , and transition dipole moments $d_{EX}(R)$ and $d_{Ea}(R)$. A comparison between the measured intensities and their theoretical counterparts demonstrates a strong competition between different intramolecular interactions. A weak spin-orbit coupling of the upper \Estate\ state with the remote $^3\Pi$ states is responsible for appearance of the $E\to a$ vibrational bands for the intermediate $v_a$-values. In turn, the HFS coupling between \Xstate\ and \astate\ states leads to peculiarities in $E\to (X,a)$ intensities, which are pronounced for high $v_{X/a}$-values in the vicinity of K(4$^2S$)+Cs(6$^2S$) dissociation threshold. Both adiabatic ro-vibrational and non-adiabatic electronic-rotational interactions explain the abrupt deviation of some observed $P/R$ intensity ratios from the expected H\"{o}nl-London factors., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the $c^3\Sigma^+(v_{c},J_{c}=N_{c})\rightarrow a^3\Sigma^+(v_{a},N_{a} = J_{c} \pm 1)$ transitions excited from the ground $X^1\Sigma^+$ state of $^{39}$K$^{133}$Cs molecule were recorded with Fourier-transform spectrometer IFS125-HR (Bruker) at the highest achievable spectral resolution of 0.0063 cm${}^{-1}$. Systematic study of the hyperfine structure (HFS) of the $a^3\Sigma^+$ state for levels with $v_{a} \in [0, 27]$ and $N_{a} \in [24, 90]$ shows that the splitting monotonically increases with $v_{a}$. The spectroscopic study was supported by ab initio calculations of the magnetic hyperfine interaction in $X^1\Sigma^+$ and $a^3\Sigma^+$ states. The discovered variation of the electronic matrix elements with the internuclear distance $R$ is in a good agreement with the observed $v_{a}$-dependencies of the HFS. Overall set of available experimental data on the $a^3\Sigma^+$ state was used to improve the potential energy curve particularly near a bottom, providing the refined dissociation energy $D_e$=267.21(1) cm${}^{-1}$. The ab initio HFS matrix elements, combined with the empirical $X^1\Sigma^+$ and $a^3\Sigma^+$ PECs in the framework of the invented coupled-channel deperturbation model, reproduce the experimental term values of both ground states within 0.003 cm${}^{-1}$ accuracy up to their common dissociation limit.

The 4503 rovibronic term values belonging to the mutually perturbed $A^1\Sigma^+_u$ and $b^3\Pi_u$ states of Cs$_2$ were extracted from laser induced fluorescence (LIF) $A\sim b\rightarrow X^1\Sigma^+_g$ Fourier transform spectra with the 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ uncertainty. The experimental term values of the $A^1\Sigma^+_u\sim b^3\Pi_u$ complex covering the rotational levels $J\in [4,395]$ in the excitation energy range $[9655,13630]$ cm$^{-1}$ were involved into coupled-channel (CC) deperturbation analysis. The deperturbation model takes explicitly into account spin-orbit coupling of the $A^1\Sigma^+_u(A0^+_u)$ and $b^3\Pi^+_{0_u}(b0^+_u)$ states as well as spin-rotational interaction between the $\Omega=0$, $1$ and $2$ components of the $b^3\Pi^+_{\Omega_u}$ state. The \emph{ab initio} relativistic calculations on the low-lying electronic states of Cs$_2$ were accomplished in the framework of Fock space relativistic coupled cluster (FSRCC) approach to provide the interatomic potentials of the interacting $A0^+_u$ and $b0^+_u$ states as well as the relevant $A\sim b$ spin-orbit coupling function. To validate the present CC deperturbation analysis solely obtained by energy-based data, the $A\sim b \to X(v^{\prime\prime}_X)$ LIF intensity distributions were measured and compared with their theoretical counterparts obtained by means of the non-adiabatic vibrational wave functions of the $A\sim b$ complex and the FSRCC $A\sim b \to X$ transition dipole moments calculated by the finite-field method., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

We combined high-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy and large-scale electronic structure calculation to study energy and radiative properties of the high-lying (3)1{\Pi} and (5)1{\Sigma}+ states of the RbCs molecule. The laser-induced (5)1{\Sigma}+(4)1{\Sigma}+(3)1{\Pi}-A(2)1{\Sigma}+ b(1)3{\Pi} fluorescence (LIF) spectra were recorded by the Bruker IFS-125(HR) spectrometer in the frequency range {\nu} 5500 to 10000cm-1 with the instrumental resolution of 0.03 cm-1. The rotational assignment of the observed LIF progressions, which exhibit irregular vibrational-rotational spacing due to strong spin-orbit interaction between A1{\Sigma}+ and b3(\Pi) states was based on the coincidences between observed and calculated energy differences. The required rovibronic term values of the strongly perturbed A-b complex have been calculated by a coupled-channels approach for both 85Rb133Cs and 87Rb133Cs isotopologs with accuracy of about 0.01 cm-1, as demonstrated in A. Kruzins et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 141, 184309 (2014)]. The experimental energies of the upper (3)1(\Pi) and (5)1{\Sigma}+ states were involved in a direct-potential-fit analysis performed in the framework of inverted perturbation approach. Quasirelativistic ab initio calculations of the spin-allowed (3)1{\Pi},(5)1{\Sigma}+- (1-4)1{\Sigma}+(1-3)1{\Pi} transition dipole moments were performed. Radiative lifetimes and vibronic branching ratios of radiative transitions from the (3)1{\Pi} and (5)1{\Sigma}+ states were evaluated. To elucidate the origin of the {\Lambda}-doubling effect in the (3)1{\Pi} state, the angular coupling (3)1{\Pi}-(1-5)1{\Sigma}+ electronic matrix elements were calculated and applied for the relevant q-factors estimate. The intensity distributions simulated for the particular (5)1{\Sigma}+(3)1{\Pi}-A-b LIF progressions have been found to be remarkably close to their experimental counterparts., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures

We present systematic measurements of longitudinal relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) of spin polarization in the ground state of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^-$) color center in synthetic diamond as a function of NV$^-$ concentration and magnetic field $B$. NV$^-$ centers were created by irradiating a Type 1b single-crystal diamond along the [100] axis with 200 keV electrons from a transmission electron microscope with varying doses to achieve spots of different NV$^-$ center concentrations. We studied alignment-to-orientation conversion caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field of both atomic rubidium isotopes. Experimental measurements were performed on the transitions of the $D_2$ line of rubidium. These measured signals were described by a theoretical model that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. In the experiments laser induced fluorescence (LIF) components were observed at linearly polarized excitation and their difference was taken afterwards. By observing the two oppositely circularly polarized components we were able to see structures not visible in the difference graphs, which yields deeper insight into the processes responsible for these signals. We studied how these signals are dependent on laser power density and how they are affected when the exciting laser is tuned to different hyperfine transitions. We have measured magneto-optical signals obtained by exciting the $D_1$ line of cesium atoms confined to an extremely thin cell (ETC), whose walls are separated by less than one micrometer, and developed an improved theoretical model to describe these signals with experimental precision. The theoretical model was based on the optical Bloch equations and included all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of the magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, and the Doppler effect, as in previous studies. However, in order to model the extreme conditions in the ETC more realistically, the model was extended to include a unified treatment of transit relaxation and wall collisions with relaxation rates that were obtained directly from the thermal velocities of the atoms and the length scales involved. Furthermore, the interaction of the atoms with different regions of the laser beam were modeled separately to account for the varying laser beam intensity over the beam profile as well as saturation effects that become important near the center of the beam at the relatively high laser intensities used during the experiments in order to obtain measurable signals. The model described the experimentally measured signals for laser intensities for magnetic fields up to 55~G and laser intensities up to 1~W/cm$^2$ with excellent agreement., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We present the results of an experimental as well as theoretical study of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances in diatomic potassium molecules in the electronic ground state with large values of the angular momentum quantum number J~100. At zero magnetic field, the absorption transitions are suppressed because of population trapping in the ground state due to Zeeman coherences between magnetic sublevels of this state along with depopulation pumping. The destruction of such coherences in an external magnetic field was used to study the resonances in this work. K2 molecules were formed in a glass cell filled with potassium metal at a temperature above 150C. The cell was placed in an oven and was located in a homogeneous magnetic field B, which was scanned from zero to 0.7 T. Q-type and R-type transitions were excited with a tunable, single-mode diode laser with central wavelength of 660 nm. Well pronounced nonlinear Hanle effect signals were observed in the intensities of the linearly polarized components of the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detected in the direction parallel to the (B)-field with polarization vectors parallel (I_par) and perpendicular (I_per) to the polarization vector of the exciting laser radiation, which was orthogonal to (B). The intensities of the LIF components were detected for different experimental parameters, such as laser power density and vapor temperature, in order to compare them with numerical simulations that were based on the optical Bloch equations for the density matrix. We report good agreement of our measurements with numerical simulations. Narrow, subnatural line width dark resonances in I_per(B) were detected and explained.

We present experimentally derived potential curves and spin-orbit interaction functions for the strongly perturbed $A^{1}\Sigma_{u}^{+}$ and $b^{3}\Pi_{u}$ states of the cesium dimer. The results are based on data from several sources. Laser-induced fluorescence Fourier transform spectroscopy (LIF FTS) was used some time ago in the Laboratoire Aim\'{e} Cotton primarily to study the $X ^{1}\Sigma_{g}^{+}$ state. More recent work at Tsinghua University provides information from moderate resolution spectroscopy on the lowest levels of the $b^{3}\Pi_{0u}^{\pm}$ states as well as additional high resolution data. From Innsbruck University, we have precision data obtained with cold Cs$_{2}$ molecules. Recent data from Temple University was obtained using the optical-optical double resonance polarization spectroscopy technique, and finally, a group at the University of Latvia has added additional LIF FTS data. In the Hamiltonian matrix, we have used analytic potentials (the Expanded Morse Oscillator form) with both finite-difference (FD) coupled-channels and discrete variable representation (DVR) calculations of the term values. Fitted diagonal and off-diagonal spin-orbit functions are obtained and compared with {\it ab initio} results from Temple and Moscow State universities.

We demonstrate that a near-dissociation photoassociation resonance can be used to create a deeply bound molecular sample of ultracold NaCs. To probe the resulting vibrational distribution of the sample, we use a new technique that can be applied to any ultracold molecular system. We utilize a tunable pulsed dye laser to produce efficient spectroscopic scans ($\sim700$ cm$^{-1}$ at a time) in which we observe the $1^{1} \Sigma^{+}\rightarrow 2^{1}\Sigma^{+}-2^{3}\Pi$ vibrational progression, as well as the dissociation limit to the Cs 6$^{2}$P$_{3/2}$ asymptote. We assign $1^{1} \Sigma^{+}$$(\emph{v}$ = 4, 5, 6, 11, 19) vibrational levels in our sample., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra A1Sigma ~ b3Pi --> X1Sigma+ of KCs dimer were recorded in near infrared region by Fourier Transform Spectrometer with a resolution of 0.03 cm-1. Overall more than 200 LIF spectra were rotationally assigned to 39K133Cs and 41K133Cs isotopomers yielding with the uncertainty of 0.003-0.01 cm-1 more than 3400 rovibronic term values of the strongly mixed singlet A1Sigma+ and triplet b3Pi states. Experimental data massive starts from the lowest vibrational level v_A=0 of the singlet and nonuniformly cover the energy range from 10040 to 13250 cm-1 with rotational quantum numbers J from 7 to 225. Besides of the dominating regular A1Sigma+ ~ b3P Omega=0 interactions the weak and local heterogenous A1S+ ~ b3P Omega=1 perturbations have been discovered and analyzed. Coupled-channel deperturbation analysis of the experimental 39K133Cs e-parity termvalues of the A1S+ ~ b3P complex was accomplished in the framework of the phenomenological 4 x 4 Hamiltonian accounting implicitly for regular interactions with the remote states manifold. The resulting diabatic potential energy curves of the interacting states and relevant spin-orbit coupling matrix elements defined analytically by Expanded Morse Oscillators model reproduce 95% of experimental data field of the 39K133Cs isotopomer with a standard deviation of 0.004 cm-1 which is consistent with the uncertainty of the experiment. Reliability of the derived parameters was additionally confirmed by a good agreement between the predicted and experimental termvalues of 41K133Cs isotopomer. Calculated intensity distributions in the A ~ b --> X LIF progressions are also consistent with their experimental counterparts., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances have been measured in an extremely thin cell (ETC) for the D1 transition of rubidium in an atomic vapor of natural isotopic composition. All hyperfine transitions of both isotopes have been studied for a wide range of laser power densities, laser detunings, and ETC wall separations. Dark resonances in the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) were observed as expected when the ground state total angular momentum F_g was greater than or equal to the excited state total angular momentum F_e. Unlike the case of ordinary cells, the width and contrast of dark resonances formed in the ETC dramatically depended on the detuning of the laser from the exact atomic transition. A theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations was applied to calculate the shapes of the resonance curves. The model averaged over the contributions from different atomic velocity groups, considered all neighboring hyperfine transitions, took into account the splitting and mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, and included a detailed treatment of the coherence properties of the laser radiation. Such a theoretical approach had successfully described nonlinear magneto-optical resonances in ordinary vapor cells. Although the values of certain model parameters in the ETC differed significantly from the case of ordinary cells, the same physical processes were used to model both cases. However, to describe the resonances in the ETC, key parameters such as the transit relaxation rate and Doppler width had to be modified in accordance with the ETC's unique features. Conventional one-dimensional oscillation theorem is found to be violated for multi-component Schr\"{o}dinger equations in a general case while for two-component eigenstates coupled by the sign-constant potential operator the following statements are valid: (1) the ground state ($v = 0$) is not degenerate; and (2) the arithmetic mean of nodes $n_1$, $n_2$ for the two-component wavefunction never exceeds the ordering number $v$ of eigenstate: $(n_1 + n_2)/2\leq v$., Comment: 5 pages

Experimental signals of non-linear magneto-optical resonances at D1 excitation of natural rubidium in a vapor cell have been obtained and described with experimental accuracy by a detailed theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations. The D1 transition of rubidium is a challenging system to analyze theoretically because it contains transitions that are only partially resolved under Doppler broadening. The theoretical model took into account all nearby transitions, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field and also included averaging over the Doppler profile. Great care was taken to obtain accurate experimental signals and avoid systematic errors. The experimental signals were reproduced very well at each hyperfine transition and over a wide range of laser power densities, beam diameters, and laser detunings from the exact transition frequency. The bright resonance expected at the F_g=1 --> F_e=2 transition of Rb-87 has been observed. A bright resonance was observed at the F_g=2 --> F_e=3 transition of Rb-85, but displaced from the exact position of the transition due to the influence of the nearby F_g=2 --> F_e=2 transition, which is a dark resonance whose contrast is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the contrast of the bright resonance at the F_g=2 --> F_e=3 transition. A comprehensive study of the electronic states at the 4s+5s asymptote in KRb is presented. Abundant spectroscopic data on the \astate state were collected by Fourier-transform spectroscopy which allow to determine an accurate experimental potential energy curve up to 14.8 \AA . The existing data set (C. Amiot et al. J. Chem. Phys. 112, 7068 (2000)) on the ground state \Xstate was extended by several additional levels lying close to the atomic asymptote. In a coupled channels fitting routine complete molecular potentials for both electronic states were fitted. Along with the line frequencies of the molecular transitions, recently published positions of Feshbach resonances in $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb mixtures (F. Ferlaino et al. Phys. Rev. A 74, 039903 (2006)) were included in the fit. This makes the derived potential curves capable for an accurate description of observed cold collision features so far. We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the polarizabilities and hyperfine constants of D_J states in 133Cs for J=3/2 and J=5/2. New experimental values for the hyperfine constant A are obtained from level-crossing signals of the (7,9,10)D_5/2 states of 133Cs and precise calculations of the tensor polarizabilities alpha_2. The results of relativistic many-body calculations for scalar and tensor polarizabilities of the (5-10)D_3/2 and (5-10)D_5/2 states are presented and compared with measured values from the literature. The pure electric field level-crossing of m_F Zeeman sublevels of hyperfine F levels at two-step laser excitation was described theoretically and studied experimentally for the nD_3/2 states in Cs with n = 7,9, and 10, by applying a diode laser in the first 6S_1/2 to 6P_3/2 step and a diode or dye laser for the second 6P_3/2 to nD_3/2 step. Level-crossing resonance signals were observed in the nD_3/2 to 6P_1/2 fluorescence. A theoretical model was developed to describe quantitatively the resonance signals by correlation analysis of the optical Bloch equations in the case when an atom simultaneously interacts with two laser fields in the presence of an external dc electric field. The simulations described well the experimental signals. The tensor polarizabilities (in Bohr radii cubed) were determined to be 7.45(20) x 10^4 for the 7D_3/2 state and 1.183(35) x 10^6 for the 9D_3/2 state; a well established tensor polarizability value for 10D_3/2 was used to calibrate the electric field. The tensor polarizability value for the 7D_3/2 state differed by ca. 15% from the existing experimentally measured value., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures (10 eps files), revtex4, submitted to Optics Communications

The X$^{1}\Sigma ^{+}$ state of NaRb was studied by Fourier transform spectroscopy. An accurate potential energy curve was derived from more than 8800 transitions in isotopomers $^{23}$Na$^{85}$Rb and $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb. This potential reproduces the experimental observations within their uncertainties of 0.003 \rcm to 0.007 \rcm. The outer classical turning point of the last observed energy level ($v''=76$, $J''=27$) lies at $\approx 12.4$ \AA, leading to a energy of 4.5 \rcm below the ground state asymptote., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures and 2 tables
