Abstract

Quantum optimal control theory is applied to two and three coupled Josephson charge qubits. It is shown that by using shaped pulses a CNOT gate can be obtained with a trace fidelity > 0.99999 for the two qubits, and even when including higher charge states, the leakage is below 1%. Yet, the required time is only a fifth of the pioneering experiment [T. Yamamoto et al., Nature 425 (2003), 941] for otherwise identical parameters. The controls have palindromic smooth time courses representable by superpositions of a few harmonics. We outline schemes to generate these shaped pulses such as simple network synthesis. The approach is easy to generalise to larger systems as shown by a fast realisation of TOFFOLI's gate in three linearly coupled charge qubits. Thus it is to be anticipated that this method will find wide application in coherent quantum control of systems with finite degrees of freedom whose dynamics are Lie-algebraically closed.

13. Intrapartum antibiotics and childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis: a retrospective cohort study.

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between intrapartum antibiotics (IABX) and asthma and allergic rhinitis among children by ages 6, 8 and 10 years. Design: Retrospective cohort. Setting and population: Data were collected though Kaiser Permanente Northern California's (KPNC) integrated healthcare system. Children were eligible if they were born in a KPNC hospital between 1997 and 2012 and stayed enrolled through age 6. Methods: Modified Poisson regressions with robust error variances were used to estimate risk ratios for IABX and each outcome at each follow‐up age during two separate time periods: 1997–2004 (n = 91 739) and 2005–2012 (n = 108 314). Main outcome measures: Asthma and allergic rhinitis by ages 6, 8 and 10. Results: The proportion of women receiving IABX increased drastically over the study period (from 4% in 1997 to 49% in 2011), while the incidence of asthma (8%) and allergic rhinitis (6%) stayed relatively stable. In adjusted models, risk ratios for the association between IABX and asthma and allergic rhinitis were largely compatible with the null, with some slightly elevated risk ratios observed. For births from 1997 to 2004, risk ratios for asthma were 1.08 (95% CI 1.00–1.17) at age 6, 1.05 (95% CI 0.97–1.15) at age 8, and 1.08 (95% CI 0.99–1.18) at age 10. For births from 2005 to 2012, risk ratios were 1.00 (95% CI 0.95–1.04) at age 6, 1.07 (95% CI 1.01–1.12) at age 8, and 1.11 (95% CI 1.03–1.20) at age 10. Conclusions: Exposure to intrapartum antibiotics is not a strong predictor of childhood asthma or allergic rhinitis risk. Abstract

This article describes conceptual connexions between a theory of culture and of organizations. These connexions aim at determining key features that should be observed in an agent-based model integrating these aspects: we describe concepts to be considered when modeling the influence of culture on individuals and thus the global consequences of culture that should result at the organizational level. We describe in particular the impact of culture on organizational performance (efficiency, robustness, flexibility).

Abstract

It is generally accepted that the environment is an essential compound of multiagent systems (MASs). Yet the environment is typically assigned limited responsibilities, or even neglected entirely, overlooking a rich potential for the paradigm of MASs. Opportunities that environments offer, have mostly been researched in the domain of situated MASs. However, the complex principles behind the concepts and responsibilities of the environment and the interplay between agents and environment are not yet fully clarified. In this paper, we first give an overview of the state-of-the-art on environments in MASs. The survey discusses relevant research tracks on environments that have been explored so far. Each track is illustrated with a number of representative contributions by the research community. Based on this study and the results of our own research, we identify a set of core concerns for environments that can be divided in two classes: concerns related to the structure of the environment, and concerns related to the activity in the environment. To conclude, we list a number of research challenges that, in our opinion, are important for further research on environments for MAS.

46. Modeling of Photovoltage and Photocurrent in Dye-Sensitized Titanium Dioxide Solar Cells

Abstract

By means of two-dimensional simulation calculations, a detailed analysis of the nanocrystalline TiO2 dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) has been performed. A simplified scheme of the nanoporous structure, which is treated as if the TiO2 film is a continuous medium, is used for modeling. On the basis of material parameters, the model permits the determination of steady-state charge-carrier distributions, the calculation of I−V curves under illumination, dark characteristics, and the spectral response of a DSC. The spatial resolution of the model allows for the answer to the question of the spatial distribution of both the electric and the electrochemical potential in the cell. Thus, a deeper insight into the operation mechanism of a DSC is obtained. Nonnegligible drift currents are found. It is shown quantitatively that the electric potential drops mainly at the TCO/TiO2 interface and not at a Helmholtz layer. The role of the dark interfacial electrical potential difference (built-in potential) for the function of a DSC is discussed. It is shown that, contrary to a conventional p−n junction solar cell, higher photovoltages than those of the dark interfacial electrical potential difference can be obtained.
