In this paper, we report that the angular dispersion of the output pulses in a nonlinear process can be efficiently compensated by using a cascaded prism(s) and short hollow-core fiber (HCF) configuration. Here, the prism(s) is used to suppress the angular dispersion and transform it into spatial chirp, while the HCF is used for removing this spatial chirp and the residual angular dispersion, which can also significantly improve the beam quality. The feasibility of this novel method is numerically and experimentally investigated with the ultra-broadband idler pulses centered at 1250 nm wavelength and generated by an LBO crystal based non-collinear optical parametric amplifier. The proof-of-principle experiment shows that the angular dispersion can be effectively removed and ultra-broadband idler pulses with good spectral quality and spatial profile can be obtained. The total transmission efficiency in the experiment is around 67% and the measured M x 2 and M y 2 can reach 1.12 and 1.04, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported ultra-broadband angular dispersion compensation scheme combining prism(s) and HCF, which can remarkably eliminate the angular dispersion while simultaneously possesses high efficiency, good spectral and beam spatial quality.

X-ray free-electron lasers can generate intense and coherent radiation at wavelengths down to the sub-angstrom region1-5, and have become indispensable tools for applications in structural biology and chemistry, among other disciplines6. Several X-ray free-electron laser facilities are in operation2-5; however, their requirement for large, high-cost, state-of-the-art radio-frequency accelerators has led to great interest in the development of compact and economical accelerators. Laser wakefield accelerators can sustain accelerating gradients more than three orders of magnitude higher than those of radio-frequency accelerators7-10, and are regarded as an attractive option for driving compact X-ray free-electron lasers11. However, the realization of such devices remains a challenge owing to the relatively poor quality of electron beams that are based on a laser wakefield accelerator. Here we present an experimental demonstration of undulator radiation amplification in the exponential-gain regime by using electron beams based on a laser wakefield accelerator. The amplified undulator radiation, which is typically centred at 27 nanometres and has a maximum photon number of around 1010 per shot, yields a maximum radiation energy of about 150 nanojoules. In the third of three undulators in the device, the maximum gain of the radiation power is approximately 100-fold, confirming a successful operation in the exponential-gain regime. Our results constitute a proof-of-principle demonstration of free-electron lasing using a laser wakefield accelerator, and pave the way towards the development of compact X-ray free-electron lasers based on this technology with broad applications.

We report dispersion management based on a mismatched-grating compressor for a 100 PW level laser, which utilizes optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and also features large chirped pulse duration and an ultra-broadband spectrum. The numerical calculation indicates that amplified pulses with 4 ns chirped pulse duration and 210 nm spectral bandwidth can be directly compressed to sub-13 fs, which is close to the Fourier-transform limit (FTL). More importantly, the tolerances of the mismatched-grating compressor to the misalignment of the stretcher, the error of the desired grating groove density and the variation of material dispersion are comprehensively analyzed, which is crucially important for its practical application. The results demonstrate that good tolerances and near-FTL compressed pulses can be achieved simultaneously, just by keeping a balance between the residual second-, third- and fourth-order dispersions in the laser system. This work can offer a meaningful guideline for the design and construction of 100 PW level lasers.

We report on experimental observation of non-laminar proton acceleration modulated by a strong magnetic field in laser irradiating micrometer aluminum targets. The results illustrate the coexistence of ring-like and filamentation structures. We implement the knife edge method into the radiochromic film detector to map the accelerated beams, measuring a source size of 30–110 μm for protons of more than 5 MeV. The diagnosis reveals that the ring-like profile originates from low-energy protons far off the axis whereas the filamentation is from the near-axis high-energy protons, exhibiting non-laminar features. Particle-in-cell simulations reproduced the experimental results, showing that the short-term magnetic turbulence via Weibel instability and the long-term quasi-static annular magnetic field by the streaming electric current account for the measured beam profile. Our work provides direct mapping of laser-driven proton sources in the space-energy domain and reveals the non-laminar beam evolution at featured time scales.

In this paper, we report that the conversion efficiency and spectrum of femtosecond optical parametric amplification (fs-OPA) can be significantly enhanced by employing a compact cascaded femtosecond OPA (CF-OPA) scheme with the self-compensation of the temporal walk-off between two nonlinear gain media. Correspondingly, the gain related temporal contrast can also be improved. The feasibility of the CF-OPA method using three cascaded BBO crystals is numerically and experimentally analyzed. Moreover, by replacing the conventional fs-OPA with the CF-OPA and optimizing the design, the performance of a nonlinear temporal filter combining cross-polarized wave generation and fs-OPA is comprehensively improved. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the CF-OPA scheme, which can generate high-performance cleaned pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate with energy of 340μJ, energy fluctuation below 0.9% (RMS), spectral width of 97 nm (FWHM), Fourier-transform-limited pulse width of 12 fs and temporal contrast better than 10−12. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported temporal walk-off self-compensated quasi-collinear CF-OPA geometry adopting three cascaded BBO crystals, which can be easily generalized to other wavelengths or nonlinear crystals. The above nonlinear temporal filter with a CF-OPA scheme has the rarest comprehensive parameters, which can provide excellent seed pulses for PW and 10 PW class femtosecond laser systems.

In this Letter, we experimentally investigate a new kind of nanosecond pre-pulse, which originates from the bidirectional scattering of crystals in traditional Ti:sapphire multi-pass amplifiers. The experimental results demonstrate that the intensity of scattering-induced pre-pulses is very sensitive to the scattering angle, and the delay time between the pre-pulse and the main pulse is an integer multiple of the light path in each pass of the amplifier. An optimized multi-pass amplifier configuration is proposed, for what is believed to be the first time, to suppress the scattering-induced pre-pulses. The contrast ratio between pre-pulses and the main pulse is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude, reaching a level of 10−10. This novel multi-pass amplifier configuration is very simple and economical, and provides an effective solution for the temporal contrast enhancement in the nanosecond range.

Pulse front distortion occurring in lenses can broaden the temporal profile of the pulse at focus and therefore decrease the focused intensity, especially for large-aperture femtosecond lasers. A previously proposed self-reference cross correlator was improved to directly measure the pulse front distortion of high-peak-power femtosecond lasers. The measured results of a 200 TW/27 fs laser are in good accordance with the calculated value. Moreover, the temporal intensity distribution of the pulse in the focal region was also investigated, in order to better guide and further promote the strong laser-matter interaction investigations. According to the measured PFD, the effective pulse duration at far field of this 200 TW laser was theoretically simulated to be &asymp, 49 fs, which is almost two times the generally regarded 27 fs. As a result, the actually available focused intensity of this laser is only 55% of the case without pulse front distortion.

A novel design of double chirped pulse amplification laser systems implementing a combination of negatively and positively chirped pulse amplification is proposed for the first time. Without utilizing any extra dispersion compensation element, this design can sufficiently cancel out the second-, third- and especially fourth-order dispersion simultaneously, just by optimizing the parameters of the stretcher and compressor in first chirped pulse amplification stage which applies negatively chirped pulse amplification. The numerical results indicate that near Fourier-transform-limited pulse duration about 20fs can be achieved in high-peak-power femtosecond laser systems up to multi-Petawatt level. This design not only provides a feasible solution for the dispersion control in high-contrast and high-peak-power femtosecond laser systems, but also can avoid the degradation of temporal contrast induced by seed energy loss in the presence of additional dispersion compensation components.

X-ray free-electron lasers can generate intense and coherent radiation at wavelengths down to the sub-ångström region

Gain redshift in high peak power Ti:sapphire laser systems can result in narrowband spectral output and hence lengthen the compressed pulse duration. In order to realize broadband spectral output in 10 PW-class Ti:sapphire lasers, the influence on gain redshift induced by spectral pre-shaping, gain distribution of cascaded amplifiers and Extraction During Pumping (EDP) technique have been investigated. The theoretical and experimental results show that the redshift of output spectrum is sensitive to the spectral pre-shaping and the gain distribution of cascaded amplifiers, while insensitive to the pumping scheme with or without EDP. Moreover, the output spectrum from our future 10 PW Ti:sapphire laser is theoretically analyzed based on the investigations above, which indicates that a Fourier-transform limited (FTL) pulse duration of 21 fs can be achieved just by optimizing the spectral pre-shaping and gain distribution in 10 PW-class Ti:sapphire lasers.

In high-pulse-energy Ti:sapphire amplifiers with moderate repetition rate, the thermal lens effect can significantly decrease the energy extraction efficiency and increase the risk of optical damage. A new method, without introducing any additional components, is proposed to suppress the thermal lens effect in such amplifiers. By utilizing a particularly designed beam expander before the amplifier, specific expanding ratio and beam divergence can be introduced to the injected seed pulses, which can improve the spatial matching between the seed pulses and the pump pulses, and thus enhance the energy extraction efficiency. The enhancement of the energy extraction efficiency has reached approximately 10% in our experimental four-pass Ti:sapphire amplifier, and the good agreement between theoretical and experimental results also demonstrates the validity and feasibility of this method.

An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) based on a large-aperture DKDP crystal and pumped by a 10 kJ level Nd:glass laser can serve as the final amplifier for a 100 PW level laser. A comprehensive numerical investigation on such a high-energy OPCPA is presented in this work. The effects on the efficiency–bandwidth product induced by the deuteration level, absorption loss, temperature variation, and optimization of zero-phase-mismatch wavelength (ZPMW) are analyzed in detail. Based on the analysis above, a three-dimensional numerical simulation taking into account the effects of pumping depletion, diffraction, and walk-off shows that, by optimization of ZPMW, broadband (over 210 nm spectral width in FWHM) and high efficiency ( > 37 % ) amplification can be realized in the DKDP crystal even with a moderate deuteration level of 70%, which can relax the requirement of a high deuteration level in a large-aperture DKDP crystal. The numerical analysis can provide meaningful guidance for the design and construction of 100 PW class laser systems.

For investigations on laser wakefield electron acceleration, there is a strong demand for driving laser exhibiting high stability and good spatial-temporal quality. Here we present an upgraded 200TW/1Hz Ti:sapphire laser with following key characteristics. The fluctuation of pulse energy and beam pointing for consecutive 5400 pulses in 90 min are as low as 0.55% and 1.5μrad respectively. The compressed pulse duration is 23.7 fs, which is about 1.1 times of the Fourier-transform limit. The focal spot obtained by an f/30 off-axis parabolic mirror is 54 μm × 52 μm at 1/e2, which is very close to the diffraction limit. Moreover, in the laser wakefield electron acceleration experiments driven by this upgraded 200TW/1Hz laser, quasi-mono-energetic electron beams are reproduced in consecutive shots. For successive 300 shots, the average peak energy of produced electron beams is 667 MeV, and the peak energy fluctuation is only 3.4%. The progresses on both driving laser and laser wakefield electron acceleration make the realization of compact X-ray free electron laser possible.

Basic features of the ultra-short Ti:sapphire laser for driving compact X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) seeded by laser-driven high harmonic generation (HHG) at SIOM (Shanghai, China) is presented. The laser system consists of four-stage Ti:sapphire amplifiers and can produce 8 J energy at 1 Hz repetition rate after the final power amplifier. The best shot-to-shot energy fluctuation is as low as 0.54% in rms value, which is a desirable characteristic for driving stable electron acceleration and HHG seed. After compression, maximal pulse energy of 5.6 J and pulse duration of 27 fs can be obtained, the corresponding pulse peak power is above 200 TW. To achieve full coherent XFEL, the amplified chirped laser beam is split into two beams after the final power amplifier. After compression in two independent compressors, the two laser beams can be used to drive laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) and HHG respectively. The benefit of such a scheme is to improve the timing jitter and achieve all-optical synchronization between the electron beam and HHG seed in the near future.

In femtosecond high-peak-power laser system, the radial group delay (RGD) of the pulse front introduced by conventional lens-based beam expanders can significantly decrease the achievable focal intensity, especially when it is larger than the pulse duration. In order to quantitatively analyze and compensate the RGD, a novel measurement scheme based on self-reference and second-order cross-correlation technology is proposed and applied to measure the RGD of the large-aperture ultra-short laser pulses directly. The measured result of the RGD in a 200 TW Ti:sapphire laser system is in good agreement with the theoretical calculation. To our knowledge, it is the first time to realize the direct RGD measurement of large-aperture ultra-short laser pulses.

By combining cross-polarized wave generation and femtosecond optical parametric amplification, a high-contrast front end featuring ultrahigh contrast, a broadband spectrum, an excellent beam profile, and good stability is built for a 10-PW-level Ti:sapphire laser in the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF-10PW laser). The front end can deliver a cleaned pulse with a 110 μJ energy at 1 kHz, and the bandwidth of the cleaned pulse exceeds 60 nm (FWHM), which can support a 17 fs compressed pulse duration. The measured output energy fluctuation in one hour is

Pulse front distortion (PFD) is mainly induced by the chromatic aberration in femtosecond high-peak power laser systems, and it can temporally distort the pulse in the focus and therefore decrease the peak intensity. A novel measurement scheme is proposed to directly measure the PFD of ultra-intensity ultra-short laser pulses, which can work not only without any extra struggle for the desired reference pulse, but also largely reduce the size of the required optical elements in measurement. The measured PFD in an experimental 200TW/27 f s laser system is in good agreement with the calculated result, which demonstrates the validity and feasibility of this method effectively. In addition, a simple compensation scheme based on the combination of concave lens and parabolic lens is also designed and proposed to correct the PFD. Based on the theoretical calculation, the PFD of above experimental laser system can almost be completely corrected by using this compensator with proper parameters.

We have theoretically and experimentally investigated the evolution of the temporal contrast in a 10-PW-level Ti:sapphire laser in the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF). The effects induced by the grism pair, spectral shaping filter, and increase in gain on the temporal contrast were investigated. First, it was found that the energy loss of clean seed pulses in the grism pair is a major factor in contrast degradation. Because of the low transmission efficiency of the grism pair (~10%), the temporal contrast is degraded by one order of magnitude. Second, the spectral shaping filter in the regenerative amplifier degrades the temporal contrast by increasing the intracavity loss. Finally, as the amplified spontaneous emission pedestal experiences gain more than the main pulse in Ti:sapphire amplifiers, particularly during saturated amplification, the temporal contrast will further deteriorate as the gain increases in multi-stage Ti:sapphire amplifiers. In addition, the effect on the temporal contrast induced by the extraction during pumping technique in large-aperture Ti:sapphire amplifiers has been considered. According to the investigations described above, the design of the SULF can be further improved. It is predicted that a temporal contrast of over 10−11 can be achieved at a peak power of 10 PW following the improvements. The investigations conducted in this study can provide guidelines for improving the temporal contrast in ultrahigh-peak-power Ti:sapphire lasers.

By designing a structured gas density profile between the dual-stage gas jets to manipulate electron seeding and energy chirp reversal for compressing the energy spread, we have experimentally produced high-brightness high-energy electron beams from a cascaded laser wakefield accelerator with peak energies in the range of 200-600 MeV, 0.4%-1.2% rms energy spread, 10-80 pC charge, and ∼0.2 mrad rms divergence. The maximum six-dimensional brightness B_{6D,n} is estimated as ∼6.5×10^{15} A/m^{2}/0.1%, which is very close to the typical brightness of e beams from state-of-the-art linac drivers. These high-brightness high-energy e beams may lead to the realization of compact monoenergetic gamma-ray and intense coherent x-ray radiation sources.

Inverse Compton scattering between ultra-relativistic electrons and an intense laser field has been proposed as a major route to generate compact high-brightness and high-energy γ-rays. Attributed to the inherent synchronization mechanism, an all-optical Compton scattering γ-ray source, using one laser to both accelerate electrons and scatter via the reflection of a plasma mirror, has been demonstrated in proof-of-principle experiments to produce a x-ray source near 100 keV. Here, by designing a cascaded laser wakefield accelerator to generate high-quality monoenergetic e-beams, which are bound to head-on collide with the intense driving laser pulse via the reflection of a 20-um-thick Ti foil, we produce tunable quasi-monochromatic MeV γ-rays (33% full-width at half-maximum) with a peak brilliance of ~3 × 1022 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 0.1% BW at 1 MeV. To the best of our knowledge, it is one order of magnitude higher than ever reported value of its kinds in MeV regime. This compact ultrahigh brilliance γ-ray source may provide applications in nuclear resonance fluorescence, x-ray radiology and ultrafast pump-probe nondestructive inspection.

Beam quality degradation during the transition from a laser wakefield accelerator to the vacuum is one of the reasons that cause the beam transport distortion, which hinders the way to compact free-electron-lasers. Here, we performed transition simulation to initialize the beam parameters for beam optics transport. This initialization was crucial in matching the experimental results and the designed evolution of the beamline. We experimentally characterized properties of high-quality laser-wakefield-accelerated electron beams, such as transverse beam profile, divergence, and directionality after long-distance transport. By installing magnetic quadrupole lenses with tailored strength gradients, we successfully collimated the electron beams with tunable energies from 200 to 600 MeV.

The spatial chirp generated in the Ti:sapphire multipass amplifier is numerically investigated based on the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) Frantz-Nodvik equations. The simulation indicates that the spatial chirp is induced by the spatially inhomogeneous gain, and it can be almost eliminated by utilization of proper beam profiles and spot sizes of the signal and pump pulses, for example, the pump pulse has a top-hatted beam profile and the signal pulse has a super-Gaussian beam profile with a relatively larger spot size. In this way, a clear understanding of spatial chirp mechanisms in the Ti: sapphire multipass amplifier is proposed, therefore we can effectively almost eliminate the spatial chirp and improve the beam quality of a high-power Ti: sapphire chirped pulse amplifier system.

We theoretically study the nonlinear compression of a 20-mJ, 1030-nm picosecond chirped pulse from the thin-disk amplifier in a krypton gas-filled hollow-core fiber. The chirp from the thin-disk amplifier system has little influence on the initial pulse, however, it shows an effect on the nonlinear compression in hollow-core fiber. We use a large diameter hollow waveguide to restrict undesirable nonlinear effects such as ionization; on the other hand, we employ suitable gas pressure and fiber length to promise enough spectral broadening; with 600-μm, 6-bar (1 bar = 105Pa), 1.8-m hollow fiber, we obtain 31.5-fs pulse. Moreover, we calculate and discuss the optimal fiber lengths and gas pressures with different initial durations induced by different grating compression angles for reaching a given bandwidth. These results are meaningful for a compression scheme from picoseconds to femtoseconds. ? 2016 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

We theoretically investigate the smoothing effects on the signal temporal phase and intensity in the optical parametric amplification (OPA) process. The theoretical model was set up based on the coupled second-order three-wave nonlinear propagation equations in the plane-wave limit, using the phase and intensity modulation to mimic the input noise to the signal. The analytical and numerical results indicate that the walk-off between the signal and the idler plays a dominant role in the temporal smoothing process of OPA, and the smoothing process by a walk-off and broad-bandwidth parametric amplification can be achieved simultaneously. Compared with the walk-off smoothing mechanism, the gain saturation can only smooth the temporal intensity fluctuation. We provide equations for estimating the smoothable modulation cycle.
