Abstract

The analysis of low molecular weight carbohydrates in single seed of lentils has been carried out using two different high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. One used a reversed-phase column coupled to a refractive index detector (HPLC-RI), while the other utilised an anion-exchange phase column coupled to a triple-pulsed amperometric detector (HPAC-PAD). The latter was found to he more sensitive and could be used for the analysis of very small samples, hence allowing parts of a seed to be analysed and then grown and used for genetic studies.

Abstract

As some chlorophenols present in wood shavings have been shown to be microbiologically methylated to form anisoles, which have caused taint in broiler chickens, the anisoles from a number of phenols used in formulations of broiler house disinfectants were prepared. The sensory properties of these compounds were investigated in order to determine their potential for producing taint. None of these anisoles were found to be likely to cause taint if formed within the broiler house. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article provides an update on Training and Career Development (TDC) Network in the NovelQ project, which is supported by European Council (EC) funding contribution of €11.2 million through the FP6 Food Quality and Safety thematic priority in Great Britain. The TDC Network has been established to optimize the future career development of its members, provides a broad range of training for individuals, and promote the science and technology within the project. The Network can be used as a strategy to increase the competencies of young scientists, and the program can be applied or adapted for wider purposes and societies such as academics centers and regional research institutes.
