Abstract

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

Federated Learning (FL), a privacy-aware approach in distributed deep learning environments, enables many clients to collaboratively train a model without sharing sensitive data, thereby reducing privacy risks. However, enabling human trust and control over FL systems requires understanding the evolving behaviour of clients, whether beneficial or detrimental for the training, which still represents a key challenge in the current literature. To address this challenge, we introduce Federated Behavioural Planes (FBPs), a novel method to analyse, visualise, and explain the dynamics of FL systems, showing how clients behave under two different lenses: predictive performance (error behavioural space) and decision-making processes (counterfactual behavioural space). Our experiments demonstrate that FBPs provide informative trajectories describing the evolving states of clients and their contributions to the global model, thereby enabling the identification of clusters of clients with similar behaviours. Leveraging the patterns identified by FBPs, we propose a robust aggregation technique named Federated Behavioural Shields to detect malicious or noisy client models, thereby enhancing security and surpassing the efficacy of existing state-of-the-art FL defense mechanisms. Abstract

Samples of the monolithic silicon pixel ASIC prototype produced in 2022 within the framework of the Horizon 2020 MONOLITH ERC Advanced project were irradiated with 70 MeV protons up to a fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2, and then tested using a beam of 120 GeV/c pions. The ASIC contains a matrix of 100 \mu m pitch hexagonal pixels, readout out by low noise and very fast frontend electronics produced in a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology process. The dependence on the proton fluence of the efficiency and the time resolution of this prototype was measured with the frontend electronics operated at a power density between 0.13 and 0.9 W/cm2. The testbeam data show that the detection efficiency of 99.96% measured at sensor bias voltage of 200 V before irradiation becomes 96.2% after a fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2. An increase of the sensor bias voltage to 300 V provides an efficiency to 99.7% at that proton fluence. The timing resolution of 20 ps measured before irradiation rises for a proton fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2 to 53 and 45 ps at HV = 200 and 300 V, respectively.

Abstract

This paper presents the first results of the study of high-energy electron and muon neutrino charged-current interactions in the FASER$\nu$ emulsion/tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC. A subset of the FASER$\nu$ volume, which corresponds to a target mass of 128.6~kg, was exposed to neutrinos from the LHC $pp$ collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6~TeV and an integrated luminosity of 9.5 fb$^{-1}$. Applying stringent selections requiring electrons with reconstructed energy above 200~GeV, four electron neutrino interaction candidate events are observed with an expected background of $0.025^{+0.015}_{-0.010}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.2$\sigma$. This is the first direct observation of electron neutrino interactions at a particle collider. Eight muon neutrino interaction candidate events are also detected, with an expected background of $0.22^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.7$\sigma$. The signal events include neutrinos with energies in the TeV range, the highest-energy electron and muon neutrinos ever detected from an artificial source. The energy-independent part of the interaction cross section per nucleon is measured over an energy range of 560--1740 GeV (520--1760 GeV) for $\nu_e$ ($\nu_{\mu}$) to be $(1.2_{-0.7}^{+0.8}) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ ($(0.5\pm0.2) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$), consistent with Standard Model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

Abstract

The Forward Search Experiment (FASER) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently directly detected the first collider neutrinos. Neutrinos play an important role in all FASER analyses, either as signal or background, and it is therefore essential to understand the neutrino event rates. In this study, we update previous simulations and present prescriptions for theoretical predictions of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, together with their associated uncertainties. With these results, we discuss the potential for possible measurements that could be carried out in the coming years with the FASER neutrino data to be collected in LHC Run 3 and Run 4., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The time resolution of the second monolithic silicon pixel prototype produced for the MONOLITH H2020 ERC Advanced project was studied using a femtosecond laser. The ASIC contains a matrix of hexagonal pixels with 100 {\mu}m pitch, readout by low-noise and very fast SiGe HBT frontend electronics. Silicon wafers with 50 {\mu}m thick epilayer with a resistivity of 350 {\Omega}cm were used to produce a fully depleted sensor. At the highest frontend power density tested of 2.7 W/cm2, the time resolution with the femtosecond laser pulses was found to be 45 ps for signals generated by 1200 electrons, and 3 ps in the case of 11k electrons, which corresponds approximately to 0.4 and 3.5 times the most probable value of the charge generated by a minimum-ionizing particle. The results were compared with testbeam data taken with the same prototype to evaluate the time jitter produced by the fluctuations of the charge collection., Comment: Submitted to JINST

Abstract

The ASIC contains a matrix of hexagonal pixels with 100 {\mu}m pitch, readout by low-noise and very fast SiGe HBT frontend electronics. Wafers with 50 {\mu}m thick epilayer with a resistivity of 350 {\Omega}cm were used to produce a fully depleted sensor. Laboratory tests conducted with a 90Sr source show that the detector works satisfactorily after irradiation. The signal-to-noise ratio is not seen to change up to fluence of 6 x 10^14 n_eq /cm^2 . The signal time jitter was estimated as the ratio between the voltage noise and the signal slope at threshold. At -35 {^\circ}C, sensor bias voltage of 200 V and frontend power consumption of 0.9 W/cm^2, the time jitter of the most-probable signal amplitude was estimated to be 21 ps for proton fluence up to 6 x 10 n_eq/cm^2 and 57 ps at 1 x 10^16 n_eq/cm^2 . Increasing the sensor bias to 250 V and the analog voltage of the preamplifier from 1.8 to 2.0 V provides a time jitter of 40 ps at 1 x 10^16 n_eq/cm^2., Comment: Submitted to JINST

Abstract

We report the first direct observation of neutrino interactions at a particle collider experiment. Neutrino candidate events are identified in a 13.6 TeV center-of-mass energy $pp$ collision data set of 35.4 fb${}^{-1}$ using the active electronic components of the FASER detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The candidates are required to have a track propagating through the entire length of the FASER detector and be consistent with a muon neutrino charged-current interaction. We infer $153^{+12}_{-13}$ neutrino interactions with a significance of 16 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. These events are consistent with the characteristics expected from neutrino interactions in terms of secondary particle production and spatial distribution, and they imply the observation of both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with an incident neutrino energy of significantly above 200 GeV., Comment: Submitted to PRL on March 24 2023

Abstract

Abstract The probability of survival in avalanche accidents is time-dependent. Critically buried victims who undergo a long burial duration (over 60 min) face a possible mortality rate of over 80%. Understanding the physiological response during critical avalanche burial is crucial for improving rescue strategies and outcomes. We present the case of a 55-year-old male skier buried under an avalanche for 4 h and 51 min in the Italian Alps. Continuous heart rate monitoring revealed distinct phases of cardiac activity during burial. Despite severe hypothermia, the victim survived without extracorporeal rewarming. This case highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and appropriate on-site management in avalanche accidents. Factors such as the presence of an air pocket may positively influence survival. This case underscores the importance of comprehensive resuscitative measures and guidelines for managing avalanche victims with prolonged burial durations.

Abstract

A second monolithic silicon pixel prototype was produced for the MONOLITH project. The ASIC contains a matrix of hexagonal pixels with 100 {\mu}m pitch, readout by a low-noise and very fast SiGe HBT frontend electronics. Wafers with 50 {\mu}m thick epilayer of 350 {\Omega}cm resistivity were used to produce a fully depleted sensor. Laboratory and testbeam measurements of the analog channels present in the pixel matrix show that the sensor has a 130 V wide bias-voltage operation plateau at which the efficiency is 99.8%. Although this prototype does not include an internal gain layer, the design optimised for timing of the sensor and the front-end electronics provides a time resolutions of 20 ps., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Freshwater fish is the most diverse group of vertebrates but, unfortunately, also one of the most threatened. While some well-known, charismatic species have been subject to important conservation efforts, many others have long been neglected. This paper aims to analyse the distribution over time of seven freshwater fish species and one lamprey in the upper Po River basin (NW Italy), an important biodiversity hotspot. Six of them are native species listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive (Lampetra zanandreai, Protochondrostoma genei, Chondrostoma soetta, Telestes muticellus, Sabanejewia larvata, and Cottus gobio), while the other two are key invasive species (Silurus glanis and Misgurnus anguillicaudatus). Data from four regional fish population monitoring campaigns carried out between 1988 and 2019 were analysed. For each species and monitoring campaign, an average Representativeness Index, measuring abundance and population structure, and an Occurrence Frequency were calculated, and then assessed for changes over the time. Of the studied species, P. genei declined the most in the last 30 years, while C. soetta and S. larvata are in a very critical situation, with very few remaining populations. T. muticellus, C. gobio and L. zanandreai seem to have declined only slightly, but their vulnerability should not be underestimated. The two invasive species, on the other hand, show a substantial increase in occurrence as well as range. While some drivers for the decline in the native species vary according to their ecological and biological characteristics, others are more general and linked to the overall degradation of the river environments: habitat alterations, loss of connectivity, excessive water abstraction, pollution, and the presence of invasive alien species. The effects of climate change, such as the rise of inland water temperatures and the alteration of hydrological cycles, must also be taken into account. Diverse and far-reaching conservation efforts are needed to improve the fish habitat and thus also protect the unique biodiversity of this region.

Abstract

IntroductionSignificant heterogeneity still exists in the nomenclature of renal involvement in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).MethodsWe applied a hierarchical cluster analysis to determine subgroups of patients according to clinical, laboratory, and renal histology characteristics in a cohort of subjects with confirmed antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) positivity and biopsy proven aPL-related renal injuries. Kidney outcomes were then assessed at 12 months.ResultsA total of 123 aPL-positive patients were included in the study (101 [82%] female, 109 [88.6%] with systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], 14 (11.4%) with primary APS [PAPS]). Three clusters were identified. Twenty-three patients (18.7%) were included in the first cluster (cluster 1), characterized by a higher prevalence of glomerular capillary and arteriolar thrombi and fragmented red blood cells in the subendothelial space. Cluster 2 included 33 patients (26.8%) and showed a higher prevalence of fibromyointimal proliferative lesions as seen in hyperplastic vasculopathy. Cluster 3 was the largest (67 patients, mainly with SLE) and was characterized by higher prevalence of subendothelial edema, of both glomerular capillaries and arterioles.ConclusionThree different clusters of patients with aPL and renal injuries emerged from our study as follows: the first, with the worst renal prognosis, was associated with features of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), thrombosis, triple aPL positivity and higher adjusted Global APS Score (aGAPSS) values; the second, characterized by hyperplastic vasculopathy with an intermediate prognosis, was seen more frequently in patients with cerebrovascular manifestations; and the third, more benign in terms of outcomes and with no overt association with thrombotic features, was characterized by endothelial swelling in concomitant lupus nephritis (LN).

Abstract

Abstract Background Pathogenic heterozygous mutations in the progranulin gene (GRN) are a key cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), leading to significantly reduced biofluid concentrations of the progranulin protein (PGRN). This has led to a number of ongoing therapeutic trials aiming to treat this form of FTD by increasing PGRN levels in mutation carriers. However, we currently lack a complete understanding of factors that affect PGRN levels and potential variation in measurement methods. Here, we aimed to address this gap in knowledge by systematically reviewing published literature on biofluid PGRN concentrations. Methods Published data including biofluid PGRN concentration, age, sex, diagnosis and GRN mutation were collected for 7071 individuals from 75 publications. The majority of analyses (72%) had focused on plasma PGRN concentrations, with many of these (56%) measured with a single assay type (Adipogen) and so the influence of mutation type, age at onset, sex, and diagnosis were investigated in this subset of the data. Results We established a plasma PGRN concentration cut-off between pathogenic mutation carriers and non-carriers of 74.8 ng/mL using the Adipogen assay based on 3301 individuals, with a CSF concentration cut-off of 3.43 ng/mL. Plasma PGRN concentration varied by GRN mutation type as well as by clinical diagnosis in those without a GRN mutation. Plasma PGRN concentration was significantly higher in women than men in GRN mutation carriers (p = 0.007) with a trend in non-carriers (p = 0.062), and there was a significant but weak positive correlation with age in both GRN mutation carriers and non-carriers. No significant association was seen with weight or with TMEM106B rs1990622 genotype. However, higher plasma PGRN levels were seen in those with the GRN rs5848 CC genotype in both GRN mutation carriers and non-carriers. Conclusions These results further support the usefulness of PGRN concentration for the identification of the large majority of pathogenic mutations in the GRN gene. Furthermore, these results highlight the importance of considering additional factors, such as mutation type, sex and age when interpreting PGRN concentrations. This will be particularly important as we enter the era of trials for progranulin-associated FTD.

Abstract

The proof-of-concept prototype of the Picosecond Avalanche Detector, a multi-PN junction monolithic silicon detector with continuous gain layer deep in the sensor depleted region, was tested with a beam of 180 GeV pions at the CERN SPS. The prototype features low noise and fast SiGe BiCMOS frontend electronics and hexagonal pixels with 100 {\mu}m pitch. At a sensor bias voltage of 125 V, the detector provides full efficiency and average time resolution of 30, 25 and 17 ps in the overall pixel area for a power consumption of 0.4, 0.9 and 2.7 W/cm^2, respectively. In this first prototype the time resolution depends significantly on the distance from the center of the pixel, varying at the highest power consumption measured between 13 ps at the center of the pixel and 25 ps in the inter-pixel region.

Abstract

The Picosecond Avalanche Detector is a multi-junction silicon pixel detector based on a $\mathrm{(NP)_{drift}(NP)_{gain}}$ structure, devised to enable charged-particle tracking with high spatial resolution and picosecond time-stamp capability. It uses a continuous junction deep inside the sensor volume to amplify the primary charge produced by ionizing radiation in a thin absorption layer. The signal is then induced by the secondary charges moving inside a thicker drift region. A proof-of-concept monolithic prototype, consisting of a matrix of hexagonal pixels with 100 $\mu$m pitch, has been produced using the 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS process by IHP microelectronics. Measurements on probe station and with a $^{55}$Fe X-ray source show that the prototype is functional and displays avalanche gain up to a maximum electron gain of 23. A study of the avalanche characteristics, corroborated by TCAD simulations, indicates that space-charge effects due to the large primary charge produced by the conversion of X-rays from the $^{55}$Fe source limits the effective gain.

Abstract

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) are a heterogeneous class of advanced materials. Their widespread use is associated with human safety concerns, which can be addressed by safe-by design strategies. This implies a deep knowledge of how physico-chemical properties drive biological effects. The ability of CNMs to interact with cytochrome c (cyt c), a heme-protein playing a key role in the respiratory chain, in apoptosis and in cellular redox homeostasis, has been reported in some studies. However, the consequences of this interaction on the cyt c functions are controversial. Here the mechanism of interaction of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), chosen as model of redox-active CNMs, with cyt c has been studied with the aim to shed light into these discrepancies. The effect of CNPs on the redox state of cyt c was monitored by UV–vis spectroscopy and 1D 1H NMR, while the effect on the primary, secondary, and tertiary cyt c structure was investigated by FIA/LC-MS and Circular Dichroism (CD). Finally, the peroxidase activity of cyt c and the involvement of superoxide radicals was evaluated by EPR spectroscopy. We demonstrate the existence of two mechanisms, one leading to the suppression of the cyt c peroxidase activity following the NADH-independent reduction of the heme-iron, and the other resulting in the irreversible protein unfolding. Overall, the results suggest that these two processes might be independently modulated by redox and surface properties respectively.

Abstract

Connections among brain regions allow pathological perturbations to spread from a single source region to multiple regions. Patterns of neurodegeneration in multiple diseases, including behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), resemble the large-scale functional systems, but how bvFTD-related atrophy patterns relate to structural network organization remains unknown. Here we investigate whether neurodegeneration patterns in sporadic and genetic bvFTD are conditioned by connectome architecture. Regional atrophy patterns were estimated in both genetic bvFTD (75 patients, 247 controls) and sporadic bvFTD (70 patients, 123 controls). First, we identified distributed atrophy patterns in bvFTD, mainly targeting areas associated with the limbic intrinsic network and insular cytoarchitectonic class. Regional atrophy was significantly correlated with atrophy of structurally- and functionally-connected neighbours, demonstrating that network structure shapes atrophy patterns. The anterior insula was identified as the predominant group epicentre of brain atrophy using data-driven and simulation-based methods, with some secondary regions in frontal ventromedial and antero-medial temporal areas. We found that FTD-related genes, namely C9orf72 and TARDBP, confer local transcriptomic vulnerability to the disease, modulating the propagation of pathology through the connectome. Collectively, our results demonstrate that atrophy patterns in sporadic and genetic bvFTD are jointly shaped by global connectome architecture and local transcriptomic vulnerability, providing an explanation as to how heterogenous pathological entities can lead to the same clinical syndrome.

Abstract

In the context of global climate change, drought occurrence in streams of alpine origin is a recent phenomenon, whose impact is still poorly investigated. In this study, we adopted a three-disciplinary approach to investigate the response of an Alpine river (NW Italy) to severe drought conditions occurred in the year 2022. We hypothesised that the considerable loss in the water flow could exacerbate wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge effects, lowering dilution capacity of the stream system and then increasing chemical/microbial pollution and altering benthic community characteristics. To assess river response to drought conditions of the considered year, the concentration of the main chemical variables, faecal indicator bacteria, pathogen presence and structural/functional organisation of benthic macroinvertebrates and diatom communities were measured monthly in the reaches located upstream and downstream of a WWTP (January–December 2022). Main environmental variables, such as flow velocity, water depth, and flow regime, were also considered. A multivariate analysis approach was then applied to emphasise correlations between selected variables and flow regime.Comparing upstream and downstream sections over the considered year, a common behaviour of chemical/microbiological parameters was observed, with generally higher concentrations of nutrients and bacterial indicators downstream of the local WWTP. Moreover, a positive correlation between water scarcity and nutrients/bacterial concentrations was revealed. The macroinvertebrate communities responded accordingly, both in terms of density and biological metric shift.Interestingly, differences between the two sections were strictly associated with hydrological conditions, with higher dissimilarities found in low-flow conditions. As the magnitude and duration of drought events are projected to increase in the years to come in different parts of Europe, this work can serve as a first building block and as a hint for future studies aimed at improving our knowledge about the consequences of these events that is pivotal for planning effective management strategies.

Abstract

In the last few decades, perennial mountain streams are becoming increasingly intermittent, due to global climate change and anthropogenic pressures. This phenomenon leads to negative effects on benthic communities’ biodiversity and river ecosystems functionality. However, the impact of flow intermittency in previously perennial Alpine streams is still poorly investigated. This dataset consists of all the data collected during a spring sampling campaign performed in April-May 2017 along 13 mountain streams located in the SW Italian Alps. These watercourses have been selected because it was possible to identify two different sampling sites: one perennial, where water has always been flowing throughout the years, and one intermittent, which showed flowing water during the sampling campaign but, in the last decade, has experienced summer dry phases. All the sites have been characterized defining the microhabitats in which samples were retrieved, and physico-chemical data were collected at each site. Biological sampling included benthic macroinvertebrates and diatoms. Therefore, the present dataset offers various biological, ecological and physico-chemical information regarding Alpine streams which have recently become intermittent. Potentially, it could be used for comparisons with different benthic communities present in mountain rivers worldwide which are facing drying events too. The broad range of information present in this dataset offers the possibility to examine only the perennial sites themselves, as an example of good river functionality due to continuous flowing water, or only the intermittent ones, to better understand the effects of drying events on these peculiar ecosystems.

37. DNA barcoding reference libraries of Italian Plecoptera: a gap analysis

Abstract

Plecoptera is a small order of aquatic insects that is considered one of the most endangered groups of insects due to increasingly altered freshwater ecosystems. Plecoptera nymphs can be challenging to identify at the species level because diagnostic characters for most species are lacking, while adults can be difficult to collect routinely given their short life span. Species identification by DNA barcoding is increasingly used as an alternative to morphological identification, but gaps and inaccuracies in reference databases needed for taxonomic assignment can undermine the utility of barcoding in real case studies. Here we aim to: i) quantify the number of Italian species of Plecoptera with barcodes from specimens collected worldwide and from Italy; ii) perform a regional assessment of DNA barcoding coverage; iii) calculate the intraspecific distance among available sequences to evaluate the potential presence of errors and cryptic species. As reference databases, we used both a non-curated database (BOLD) and a curated database (MIDORI2) to test the effect of sequence selection on the availability of reference sequences. We found that 67.6% and 51.8% of the Italian Plecoptera species were represented in BOLD and MIDORI2. Most of the available sequences were obtained from specimens collected outside Italy, with only 21.8% and 13.5% of the Italian species having sequences from specimens collected in Italy. Endemisms were poorly represented, and intraspecific distances for some species were high, which suggest cryptic diversity or erroneous assignments. Our results support the growing need to increase international cooperation among barcode initiatives and to promote the integration between molecular biologists and zoologists to exploit the full potential of DNA barcoding to protect biodiversity.

Abstract

AbstractLampetra zanandreai (Vladykov, 1955) is a non-parasitic, freshwater lamprey endemic to the ancient Po basin. A few, mostly very dated studies have investigated some aspect of the biology of this lamprey, but surprisingly, despite it being considered a threatened species, information on its ecology is practically absent. Specifically, information about habitat preferences is generic and qualitative. Since most of the life cycle is spent in the fossorial larval stage, which is also the only one in which organisms feed, information about ecological requirements of ammocoetes is essential for any conservation strategy. In this study we provide the first data about physical habitat preferences for lamprey ammocoetes by analyzing their presence within sampled hydro-morphological units (HMUs), following the approach of habitat attribute description of the MesoHABSIM (MesoHABitat SImulation Model) methodology. To explore the relationship between lamprey presence and HMU characteristics, a random forest (RF) model was developed and tested using data collected in five stream reaches of the Po basin (NW Italy). The final parsimonious RF model performed well in terms of accuracy (95.2%) and true skill statistic (90.4%), allowing us to identify the most significant mesohabitat attributes for the considered species. Furthermore, in the Ghiandone River, where the highest density and number of individuals were found, a granulometric analysis of the riverbed material was carried out. Results showed that selected strains of sand and fine gravel, with low organic content, are preferred by ammocoetes. To our knowledge, this is the first study exploring the habitat preference of this endangered species, listed in Annex II of the European Habitats Directive.

Abstract

Major advances in silicon pixel detectors, with outstanding timing performance, have recently attracted significant attention in the community. In this work we present and discuss the use of state-of-the-art Geiger-mode APDs, also known as single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), for the detection of minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with best-in-class timing resolution. The SPADs were implemented in standard CMOS technology and integrated with on-chip quenching and recharge circuitry. Two devices in coincidence allowed to measure the time-of-flight of 180 GeV/c momentum pions with a coincidence time resolution of 22 ps FWHM (9.5 ps Gaussian sigma). Radiation hardness measurements, also presented here, highlight the suitability of this family of devices for a wide range of high energy physics (HEP) applications.
