Abstract Controversies persist about the protective effects of vaccines against acute cardiovascular events. Using electronic medical records from hospitals and influenza vaccine administration data in Beijing, China, we studied individuals vaccinated between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2018, who experienced at least one acute cardiovascular event within two years. A self-controlled case series design calculated the relative incidence (RI) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of acute cardiovascular events within one year after vaccination. Among 1647 participants (median age: 65 years, 38.43% female), the risk of events 29–365 days post-vaccination was 0.76 times the baseline level (RI: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.68–0.84). Abstract Cross‐dataset object detection methods can adapt to the needs of rapid category expansion in object detection tasks. However, these methods are prone to generate dataset‐aware errors with false alarm objects. This study is aimed to address these issues. A box‐separated multiple‐head module and box‐separated loss function based on the YOLOv8 network are devised to achieve cross‐dataset object detection. Additionally, a sameclass‐aware fusion module to avoid gradient conflicts due to cross‐category conflicts is developed. A multiple‐head fusion module is devised to reduce the number of false alarm objects caused by dataset‐aware errors. A global class‐aware sampler is also designed to adapt to the impact of the imbalanced number of categories and training samples across datasets. The effectiveness of the box‐separated multiple‐head module is verified using cross‐datasets built using the COCO, WiderFace, WiderPerson, and OpenImages V4 datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency and precision of the proposed method.

For many years, Pakistan’s economic progress and development have primarily depended on agriculture. However, widespread rural poverty impairs agricultural productivity, which worsens the outlook for growth for both the agricultural sector and the nation as a whole. Raising farmers’ incomes through rural development is a key component of agricultural reform, and the prime objective of this study is to identify how government policies and foreign aid affect Pakistan’s degree of rural poverty. This research aims to check the mediating role of rural development for the relationship of foreign aid, agricultural production, and corporate social responsibility with poverty reduction. This research also examines the moderating role of government support in the relationship of rural development with poverty reduction. In this regard, the current study proposes four hypotheses of direct relationships, three mediating relationships, and one moderating relationship. The population comprised farmers. The sample size of 119 was determined using G*Power with medium effect size settings, ensuring a robust representation of the target group. To gather primary data, a close-ended structured questionnaire was administered, employing a 7-point Likert scale to gather respondents’ opinions. This study investigates the Punjab province’s agricultural landscape from a quantitative perspective, using convenient sampling to identify the characteristics that contribute to reducing poverty, and was conducted from January to December 2023. Analytical procedures utilizing Smart PLS 4.0.9.6 for SEM testing reveal that all proposed hypotheses, including direct, mediating, and moderating, are accepted. The main results show that rural development significantly mediates the relationship between foreign aid, agricultural production, and corporate social responsibility with poverty reduction. Furthermore, government support positively moderates the relationship between rural development and poverty reduction. The findings underscore the significance of rural development, coupled with government support, as a pivotal factor in effectively reducing poverty in Pakistan’s economic landscape.

Abstract This paper is based on the proximity engineering project of the Baishiyi tunnel group passing under the Chongqing West Station track group. Considering the train load and the spatial relationship of the tunnel and track groups, the settlement patterns, horizontal displacement, and differential settlement of the tunnel–strata–tracks system during the excavation process are studied through theoretical calculations and numerical simulation methods. The results indicate that the tunnel vault, strata, and track settlement deformation patterns are similar. Throughout the tunnel construction process, the tracks underwent uplift, settlement, and eventually stabilized. The settlement trough formed by the excavation of the three tunnels below the track group has an impact range of 25–145 m. Between 35 and 75 m, the differential settlement of the double track gradually increases with excavation. As the tunnel face reaches 75 m, the track differential settlement gradually converges and tends to stabilize. To minimize the impact of underpass tunnel construction on track groups, it is recommended to use a combination of full-section hole grouting and surface reinforcement grouting for ground reinforcement. Additionally, optimizing the construction parameters, including the step length and primary support closure time, and strengthening the locking anchor can further reduce the impact.

Abstract Adipose tissues in the hypodermis, the crucial stem cell reservoir in the skin and the endocrine organ for the maintenance of skin homeostasis undergo significant changes during skin aging. Dermal white adipose tissue (dWAT) has recently been recognized as an important organ for both non-metabolic and metabolic health in skin regeneration and rejuvenation. Defective differentiation, adipogenesis, improper adipocytokine production, and immunological dissonance dysfunction in dWAT lead to age-associated clinical changes. Here, we review age-related alterations in dWAT across levels, emphasizing the mechanisms underlying the regulation of aging. We also discuss the pathogenic changes involved in age-related fat dysfunction and the unfavorable consequences of accelerated skin aging, such as chronic inflammaging, immunosenescence, delayed wound healing, and fibrosis. Research has shown that adipose aging is an early initiation event and a potential target for extending longevity. We believe that adipose tissues play an essential role in aging and form a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of age-related skin diseases. Further research is needed to improve our understanding of this phenomenon.

Six species of the ant-eating spider of the family Zodariidae are described from Xizang, China, including five new species: Asceua chayu sp. nov. (♀), A. dawai sp. nov. (♂♀), Mallinella migu sp. nov. (♂), M. mеdog sp. nov. (♂♀), and M. yadong sp. nov. (♂♀). The female of Cydrela linzhiensis (Hu, 2001) is described here for the first time. Descriptions and photographs of all the species are provided.

Abstract Background Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) represent the most advantageous choice for soft tissue regeneration. Studies proved the recruitment of ASCs post tissue injury was mediated by chemokine CXCL12, but the mechanism by which CXCL12 is generated after tissue injury remains unclear. Migrasomes are newly discovered membrane-bound organelles that could deliver CXCL12 spatially and temporally in vivo. In this study, we sought to investigate whether migrasomes participate ASC-mediated tissue regeneration. Methods Discrepant and asymmetrical soft tissue regeneration mice model were established, in which HE staining, immunofluorescent staining, western blot and qPCR were conducted to confirm the role of CXCL12 and migrasomes in ASC-mediated tissue regeneration. Characterization of ASC-derived migrasomes were carried out by confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy as well as western blot analysis. The function and mechanism of migrasomes were further testified by assisting tissue regeneration with isolated migrasomes in vivo and by in vitro transwell combined with co-culture system. Results Here, we show for the first time that migrasomes participate in soft tissue regeneration. ASCs generate migrasomes enriched with CXCL12 to mediate tissue regeneration. Migrasomes from ASCs could promote stem cells migration by activating CXCR4/RhoA signaling in vivo and in vitro. Chemoattracted ASCs facilitate regeneration, as demonstrated by the upregulation of an adipogenesis-associated protein. This positive feed-back-loop creates a favorable microenvironment for soft tissue regeneration. Thus, migrasomes represent a new therapeutic target for ASC-mediated tissue regeneration. Conclusions Our findings reveal a previously unknown function of ASCs in mediating tissue regeneration by generating migrasomes. The ASC-derived migrasomes can restore tissue regeneration by recruiting stem cells, which highlighting the potential application of ASC-derived migrasomes in regenerative medicine.

In this paper, we will conclude the results of Bufeng-1 (BF-1) A/B data processing, calibration workflow, and validation of the calibrated sea surface winds, land surface soil moisture, and sea surface height measurements. Since 2019, the BF-1 mission has operated in-orbit for over 4 years. The Earth reflected delay Doppler maps (DDMs) are continuously collected to perform global sea surface and land observations. At the same time, the intermediate frequency (IF) raw data are also obtained for 12 seconds every pass in diagnostic mode. To begin with, a brief description of the spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique will be provided in the introduction. Next, we will present the overview of Chinese BF-1 mission and the data specifications used in our research. In the next section, the BF-1 mission-related spaceborne power calibration and validation are presented to show the support to power DDM observable production for sea surface and land surface applications. Then, the status of Chinese Beidou System (BDS) Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) acquisition programme is then introduced. Furthermore, the latest sea surface height (SSH) measurements results including two modes (group delay and carrier phase) and wind speed derivation based on machine learning (ML) method will be spatial-temporal aligned and validated with auxiliary datasets including Denmark Technology University (DTU) mean sea surface (MSS) products and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5 reanalysis. The previous published results of sea surface winds retrieval under Hurricane conditions and soil moisture retrieval are also reviewed for the BF-1 mission applications. Finally, the conclusion of BF-1 derived results will be discussed to draw out ongoing/future works.

Tidal inundation is a major stress in salt marshes that regulates the patterns of plant distribution and the associated functions provided by vegetation communities. Usually, frequency is used to represent inundation intensity and can be estimated using elevation. However, frequency is only a statistical indicator of tidal inundation conditions during a given period, which ignores many details of tidal inundation characteristics based on a single tidal event. On the scale of a single tidal event, duration and water depth are important characteristics for describing inundation conditions, which vary along the elevation gradient. The frequency of tidal events of a specific duration and water depth also varied. To unravel the impact of varied inundation characteristics on the key life stages of a foundation plant, we designed an experiment with varied inundation treatments of different frequencies, durations, and depths. Our results showed that the frequency, duration, and depth of inundation events significantly influenced seed emergence, seedling survival, and growth. Stress can be strengthened by a higher frequency with a longer duration and larger depth. Among these factors, frequency had a dominant impact, followed by duration and water depth. Specifically, there is a trade-off between frequency, duration, and depth, suggesting that an inundation event with shallower depth and/or shorter duration would reduce the stress from higher frequency. The findings fill a gap in the loss of details of varied inundation characteristics on plant establishment on a fine scale. Further, it will help explicit inundation stress more accurately and clearly and provide important implications for stress relief solutions in coastal ecological restoration.

BackgroundDry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a retinal disease, which has been the third leading cause of vision loss. But current AMD classification technologies did not focus on the classification of early stage. This study aimed to develop a deep learning architecture to improve the classification accuracy of dry AMD, through the analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.MethodsWe put forward an ensemble deep learning architecture which integrated four different convolution neural networks including ResNet50, EfficientNetB4, MobileNetV3 and Xception. All networks were pre-trained and fine-tuned. Then diverse convolution neural networks were combined. To classify OCT images, the proposed architecture was trained on the dataset from Shenyang Aier Excellence Hospital. The number of original images was 4,096 from 1,310 patients. After rotation and flipping operations, the dataset consisting of 16,384 retinal OCT images could be established.ResultsEvaluation and comparison obtained from three-fold cross-validation were used to show the advantage of the proposed architecture. Four metrics were applied to compare the performance of each base model. Moreover, different combination strategies were also compared to validate the merit of the proposed architecture. The results demonstrated that the proposed architecture could categorize various stages of AMD. Moreover, the proposed network could improve the classification performance of nascent geographic atrophy (nGA).ConclusionIn this article, an ensemble deep learning was proposed to classify dry AMD progression stages. The performance of the proposed architecture produced promising classification results which showed its advantage to provide global diagnosis for early AMD screening. The classification performance demonstrated its potential for individualized treatment plans for patients with AMD.

BackgroundThe application of autologous fat transplantation in facial lesions of patients with localized scleroderma (LoS) has been reported in recent years.ObjectiveThe authors report a case of worsening of active localized scleroderma after autologous fat transplantation.MethodsA man presented with neck and facial skin atrophy and pigmentation with a history of LoS. Appearing 1.5 years ago, the lesion had progressively grown in size and shape. Consent was obtained after the patient was informed of the possible surgical risks during the active phase of the disease. He underwent autologous fat grafting into the right cheek with about 30 ml Coleman fat graft.ResultsSkin dyspigmentation and atrophy progressively deteriorated 1 month into therapy, with slightly increased erythema and enlargement of the lesion. Six months after the therapy, the localized scleroderma-related score worsened.LimitationsThere are different factors, such as that systemic medications could affect the treatment of localized scleroderma by autologous fat transplantation. Meanwhile, considering the limitation of the 6-month follow-up period, obtaining long-term follow-up data is necessary to evaluate sustained outcomes and potential complications.ConclusionMore clinical research is needed to determine the time interval between disease inactivity and the application of any surgical procedures to avoid reactivation.

The registration of laser point clouds in complex conditions in wilderness scenes is an important aspect in the research field of autonomous vehicle navigation. It serves as the foundation for solving problems such as environment reconstruction, map construction, navigation and positioning, and pose estimation during the motion process of autonomous vehicles using laser radar sensors. Due to the sparse structured features, uneven point cloud density, and high noise levels in wilderness scenes, achieving reliable and accurate point cloud registration is challenging. In this paper, we propose a semantic-supervised sparse point cloud registration network (S3PCRNet) aiming to achieve effective registration of laser point clouds in wilderness large-scale scenes. Firstly, a local feature aggregation module is designed to extract the local structural features of the point cloud. Then, based on rotation position encoding, a randomly grouped self-attention mechanism is proposed to obtain the global features of the point cloud through learning. A semantic information weight matrix is calculated to filter out negligible points. Subsequently, a semantic fusion feature module is utilised to find reliable correspondences between point clouds. Finally, the proposed method is trained and evaluated on both the RELLIS-3D dataset and a self-made Off-road-3D dataset.

AIM: To investigate a pioneering framework for the segmentation of meibomian glands (MGs), using limited annotations to reduce the workload on ophthalmologists and enhance the efficiency of clinical diagnosis. METHODS: Totally 203 infrared meibomian images from 138 patients with dry eye disease, accompanied by corresponding annotations, were gathered for the study. A rectified scribble-supervised gland segmentation (RSSGS) model, incorporating temporal ensemble prediction, uncertainty estimation, and a transformation equivariance constraint, was introduced to address constraints imposed by limited supervision information inherent in scribble annotations. The viability and efficacy of the proposed model were assessed based on accuracy, intersection over union (IoU), and dice coefficient. RESULTS: Using manual labels as the gold standard, RSSGS demonstrated outcomes with an accuracy of 93.54%, a dice coefficient of 78.02%, and an IoU of 64.18%. Notably, these performance metrics exceed the current weakly supervised state-of-the-art methods by 0.76%, 2.06%, and 2.69%, respectively. Furthermore, despite achieving a substantial 80% reduction in annotation costs, it only lags behind fully annotated methods by 0.72%, 1.51%, and 2.04%. CONCLUSION: An innovative automatic segmentation model is developed for MGs in infrared eyelid images, using scribble annotation for training. This model maintains an exceptionally high level of segmentation accuracy while substantially reducing training costs. It holds substantial utility for calculating clinical parameters, thereby greatly enhancing the diagnostic efficiency of ophthalmologists in evaluating meibomian gland dysfunction.

Abstract Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are a critical adult stem cell subpopulation and are widely utilized in the fields of regenerative medicine and stem cell research due to their abundance, ease of harvest, and low immunogenicity. ASCs, which are homologous with skin by nature, can treat immune-related skin diseases by promoting skin regeneration and conferring immunosuppressive effects, with the latter being the most important therapeutic mechanism. ASCs regulate the immune response by direct cell–cell communication with immune cells, such as T cells, macrophages, and B cells. In addition to cell–cell interactions, ASCs modulate the immune response indirectly by secreting cytokines, interleukins, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles. The immunomodulatory effects of ASCs have been exploited to treat many immune-related skin diseases with good therapeutic outcomes. This article reviews the mechanisms underlying the immunomodulatory effects of ASCs, as well as progress in research on immune-related skin diseases.

Diabetic wound healing presents a significant clinical challenge due to the interplay of systemic metabolic disturbances and local inflammation, which hinder the healing process. Macrophages undergo a phenotypic shift from M1 to M2 during wound healing, a transition pivotal for effective tissue repair. However, in diabetic wounds, the microenvironment disrupts this phenotypic polarization, perpetuating inflammation, and impeding healing. Reprograming macrophages to restore their M2 phenotype offers a potential avenue for modulating the wound immune microenvironment and promoting healing. This review elucidates the mechanisms underlying impaired macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype in diabetic wounds and discusses novel strategies, including epigenetic and metabolic interventions, to promote macrophage conversion to M2. Hydrogels, with their hydrated 3D cross-linked structure, closely resemble the physiological extracellular matrix and offer advantageous properties such as biocompatibility, tunability, and versatility. These characteristics make hydrogels promising candidates for developing immunomodulatory materials aimed at addressing diabetic wounds. Understanding the role of hydrogels in immunotherapy, particularly in the context of macrophage reprograming, is essential for the development of advanced wound care solutions. This review also highlights recent advancements in immunotherapeutic hydrogels as a step toward precise and effective treatments for diabetic wounds.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the synergistic interaction effect between hyperuricemia and hypertension towards chronic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.MethodsThis research originates from a cross-sectional study performed in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China, between March and November 2018. The correlation between serum uric acid levels and the risk of chronic kidney disease was assessed using a restricted cubic spline model. An unconditional multivariable logistic regression model, along with an interaction table, was utilized to explore the potential interaction effect of hyperuricemia and hypertension towards chronic kidney disease.Results1,756 patients with type 2 diabetes were included in this study, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was 27.62% in this population. A U-shaped non-linear pattern emerged correlating serum uric acid (SUA) levels and CKD risk, indicating that both low and high SUA levels were linked to an increased CKD risk. Obesity, characterized by its complexity and heterogeneity, has emerged as a significant public health concern. Its association with increased incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases stems not only from its complications and comorbidities but also from the endocrine effects of adipose tissue. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a chronic inflammatory condition, has been closely linked to obesity. Intriguingly, mild obesity appears to confer a protective effect against AAA mortality, whereas severe obesity and being underweight do not, giving rise to the concept of the “obesity paradox”. This review aims to provide an overview of obesity and its paradoxical relationship with AAA, elucidate its underlying mechanisms, and discuss the importance of preoperative weight loss in severely obese patients with AAA.

Summary: Cleaner heating policies aim to reduce air pollution and may bring about health benefits to individuals. Based on a fixed-effect model focusing on Beijing, this study found that after the onset of air pollution, daily clinic visits, hospitalization days, and hospitalization expenses increased several days after the occurrence of air pollution. These hospitalization changes were observed in males and females and three different age groups. A difference-in-differences (DID) model was constructed to identify the influences of cleaner heating policies on health consequences. The study revealed that the policy positively affects health outcomes, with an average decrease of 3.28 thousand clinic visits for all diseases. The total hospitalization days and expenses tend to decrease by 0.22 thousand days and 0.34 million CNY (Chinese Yuan), respectively. Furthermore, implementing the policy significantly reduced the number of daily clinic visits for respiratory diseases, asthma, stroke, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPDs).

Plasmodium vivax serological exposure markers (SEMs) have emerged as promising tools for the actionable surveillance and implementation of targeted interventions to accelerate malaria elimination. To determine the dynamic profiles of SEMs in current and past P. vivax infections, we screened and selected 11 P. vivax proteins from 210 putative proteins using protein arrays, with a set of serum samples obtained from patients with acute P. vivax and documented past P. vivax infections. Then we used a murine protein immune model to initially investigate the humoral and memory B cell response involved in the generation of long-lived antibodies. We show that of the 11 proteins, especially C-terminal 42-kDa region of P. vivax merozoite surface protein 1 (PvMSP1-42) induced longer-lasting long-lived antibodies, as these antibodies were detected in individuals infected with P. vivax in the 1960-1970s who were not re-infected until 2012. In addition, we provide a potential mechanism for the maintenance of long-lived antibodies after the induction of PvMSP1-42. The results indicate that PvMSP1-42 induces more CD73+CD80+ memory B cells (MBCs) compared to P. vivax GPI-anchored micronemal antigen (PvGAMA), allowing IgG anti-PvMSP1-42 antibodies to be maintained for a long time.

Strontium isotopes of authigenic carbonate potentially record sediment provenance, fluid sources, and fluid–rock interactions, little was studied on this topic in clastic strata. This study investigated clastic rocks containing authigenic calcite in the Lower Triassic Baikouquan Formation in the Junggar Basin, northwestern China. Mineral compositional and fluid inclusion analyses were conducted to constrain the precipitation processes of authigenic calcite, and the Sr contents and isotope ratios of the calcite were also measured. The authigenic calcite was precipitated at 80–140°C as the final product of thermochemical oxidation of hydrocarbons and thus has high Mn contents and highly negative δ13CVPDB values (as low as −70‰). The calcite also exhibits anomalously low 87Sr/86Sr values (0.704827, 0.706612), which are lower than contemporaneous seawater and published 87Sr/86Sr values of carbonate cements in clastic sediments, and also much lower than 87Sr/86Sr values (0.722027, 0.736750) of alkali feldspar in the strata. These low 87Sr/86Sr values record the low 87Sr/86Sr of the dominant rocks in the provenance area, such as volcanic rocks. During diagenesis, especially mesodiagenesis, the charging of hydrocarbon-bearing fluids promoted abundant dissolution of orthoclase in the alkali feldspar detritus, releasing radiogenic 87Sr into the pore waters, and eventually increasing the 87Sr/86Sr values in the late-stage calcite that precipitated after this reaction. This inference is consistent with the positive correlation between the calcite 87Sr/86Sr ratios and the dissolution intensity of orthoclase. In regions that do not undergo hydrocarbon-charging and where orthoclase remains stable, the lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the calcite generally record the provenance. For authigenic calcite associated with intense fluid–rock interactions, the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios reflect the enhanced dissolution intensity of 87Sr-rich minerals such as orthoclase. Therefore, combined with a petrological study, Sr isotopes of authigenic carbonate in clastic sediments can trace sediment provenance and intensity of fluid–rock interactions.

High-energy gamma-ray radiography has exceptional penetration ability and has become an indispensable nondestructive testing (NDT) tool in various fields. For high-energy photons, point projection radiography is almost the only feasible imaging method, and its spatial resolution is primarily constrained by the size of the gamma-ray source. In conventional industrial applications, gamma-ray sources are commonly based on electron beams driven by accelerators, utilizing the process of bremsstrahlung radiation. The size of the gamma-ray source is dependent on the dimensional characteristics of the electron beam. Extensive research has been conducted on various advanced accelerator technologies that have the potential to greatly improve spatial resolution in NDT. In our investigation of laser-driven gamma-ray sources, a spatial resolution of about 90 µm is achieved when the areal density of the penetrated object is 120 g/cm2. A virtual source approach is proposed to optimize the size of the gamma-ray source used for imaging, with the aim of maximizing spatial resolution. In this virtual source approach, the gamma ray can be considered as being emitted from a virtual source within the convertor, where the equivalent gamma-ray source size in imaging is much smaller than the actual emission area. On the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, we derive a set of evaluation formulas for virtual source scale and gamma-ray emission angle. Under optimal conditions, the virtual source size can be as small as 15 µm, which can significantly improve the spatial resolution of high-penetration imaging to less than 50 µm.

Freeway traffic volume is strongly correlated with the intensity of regional socioeconomic spatial interactions and the road network structure. Although existing studies have proposed indicators of betweenness centrality (BC) integrated into regional spatial interactions, the socio-economic drivers of freeway traffic volume formation have been neglected. More importantly, existing studies have not established a non-linear response relationship among BC, city socio-economic spatial interactions, and road traffic volume, which severely limits the comprehensive quantification of the role of freeway traffic flow drivers. Therefore, this study proposes a freeway traffic volume inference method that integrates spatial interaction to enhance BC. First, the socioeconomic factors of the origin and destination cities are incorporated into the BC indicator to create an enhanced betweenness centrality indicator (ODBC), which quantifies the strength of spatial interactions between cities. Second, a machine learning approach is used to develop the non-linear response relationship between ODBC and freeway traffic flow to accurately infer traffic volume. Finally, utilizing the SHapley additive explanation approach, the role vectors of intercity freeway traffic volume drivers are quantified. Experiments conducted on data from freeway toll stations demonstrate that the proposed method surpasses the baseline method based on BC and weighted by BC considering only the potential destination or origin city attractiveness, with an improvement in R2 of 14%, 4.2%, and 4%, and a maximum reduction in RMSE of 40%, 24.5%, and 26%. The proposed method yields higher accuracy for unknown road segments and is easily interpretable.

The Fengyun 4B (FY-4B) as an operational satellite was launched on 3 June 2021. The advanced geostationary radiation imager (AGRI) aboard on the FY-4B has ability to monitor aerosols information. The objective of this study is to introduce the operational algorithm for retrieving land aerosol based on FY-4B/AGRI data, which is called as an adaptive dark-target algorithm. First, on the basis of FY-4B/AGRI cloud mask and snow cover products, a novelty identification scheme was proposed to classify the pixels into cloud, haze and clear categories. Then, aiming at the characteristics of FY-4B/AGRI instrument, the adaptive relationships of surface reflectance varying with the normalized vegetation index or view zenith angle were established by atmospheric correction. By validating the AGRI retrievals every 15 min with AERONET AOD, AGRI performance (R: 0.95, bias: –0.014, RMSE: 0.091, within expected error (EE:): 81.99%) was comparable to that of Aqua/MODIS deep blue AOD (R: 0.95, bias: 0.024, RMSE: 0.095, EE: 78.57%), while have the largest difference with those of MYDDT. At daily mean scale, the statistics of AGRI AOD against AERONET performed well (R: 0.93, bias: 0.062, RMSE: 0.18, EE: 64%). Additionally, the agreement of AGRI retrievals with AERONET AOD varied with observation moments and stations. The FY-4B/AGRI operational aerosol product based on adaptive dark target algorithm were proved to be robust.

Abstract Objective The associations between plasma vitamin B12 level and anemia under different dietary patterns in elderly Chinese people are poorly understood. We aimed to examine the associations between plasma vitamin B12 levels and anemia under different dietary patterns in adults aged 65 years and older in nine longevity areas in China. Methods A total of 2405 older adults completed a food frequency questionnaire at the same time as a face-to-face interview. The dietary diversity score (DDS) was assessed based on the food frequency questionnaire, with the low DDS group referring to participants with a DDS score ≤ 4 points. Vitamin B12 levels were divided into two groups of high (>295 pg/mL) and low (≤ 295 pg/mL) with the median used as the cut-off point. Sub-analyses were also performed on older adults divided into tertiles of vitamin B12 levels: low ( 375 pg/mL) to study the association of these levels with anemia. Results Six hundred ninety-five (28.89%) of these people were diagnosed with anemia and had a mean age of 89.3 years. Abstract Background The multimorbidity of Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and many other chronic conditions is becoming common. This study aimed to assess multimorbidity distribution in ASCVD among adults in the United States from 1999 to 2018. Methods This cross-sectional survey from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2018 using stratified multistage probability design. Among the 53,083 survey respondents during the study period, 5,729 US adults aged ≥ 20 years with ASCVD. Joinpoint regression was used to assess the statistical significance of prevalence trends in the prevalence of ASCVD stratified by multimorbidity. The Apriori association rule mining algorithm was used to identify common multimorbidity association patterns in ASCVD patients. Results Overall, 5,729 of 53,083 individuals had ASCVD, and the prevalence showed a slow declining trend (biannual percentage change = -0.81%, p = 0.035, average 7.71%). Abstract Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) and sclerodermatous graft-versus-host disease (Scl-GVHD)—characterized by similar developmental fibrosis, vascular abnormalities, and innate and adaptive immune response, resulting in severe skin fibrosis at the late stage—are chronic autoimmune diseases of connective tissue. The significant immune system dysfunction, distinguishing autoimmune-related fibrosis from mere skin fibrosis, should be a particular focus of treating autoimmune-related fibrosis. Recent research shows that innovative mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy, with the capacities of immune regulation, inflammation suppression, oxidation inhibition, and fibrosis restraint, shows great promise in overcoming the disease. Main body This review of recent studies aims to summarize the therapeutic effect and theoretical mechanisms of MSC-based therapy in treating autoimmune-related fibrotic skin diseases, SSc and Scl-GVHD, providing novel insights and references for further clinical applications. It is noteworthy that the efficacy of MSCs is not reliant on their migration into the skin. Working on the immune system, MSCs can inhibit the chemotaxis and infiltration of immune cells to the skin by down-regulating the expression of skin chemokines and chemokine receptors and reducing the inflammatory and pro-fibrotic mediators. ​Furthermore, to reduce levels of oxidative stress, MSCs may improve vascular abnormalities, and enhance the antioxidant defenses through inducible nitric oxide synthase, thioredoxin 1, as well as other mediators. The oxidative stress environment does not weaken MSCs and may even strengthen certain functions. Regarding fibrosis, MSCs primarily target the transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway to inhibit fibroblast activation. Here, miRNAs may play a critical role in ECM remodeling. Clinical studies have demonstrated the safety of these approaches, though outcomes have varied, possibly owing to the heterogeneity of MSCs, the disorders themselves, and other factors. Nevertheless, the research clearly reveals the immense potential of MSCs in treating autoimmune-related fibrotic skin diseases. Conclusion The application of MSCs presents a promising approach for treating autoimmune-related fibrotic skin diseases: SSc and Scl-GVHD. Therapies involving MSCs and MSC extracellular vesicles have been found to operate through three primary mechanisms: rebalancing the immune and inflammatory disorders, resisting oxidant stress, and inhibiting overactivated fibrosis (including fibroblast activation and ECM remodeling). However, the effectiveness of these interventions requires further validation through extensive clinical investigations, particularly randomized control trials and phase III/IV clinical trials. Additionally, the hypothetical mechanism underlying these therapies could be elucidated through further research.

The construction of healthy cities is an important part of the construction of a healthy China and the Healthy China Initiative, and a good built environment helps improve the health governance capacity of a city and the health level of the population. With the development of urbanization, the acceleration of global aging, and the improvement of people's living standards, cardiovascular diseases have gradually become a primary threat to human health. In this paper, we introduced the effects of built environment on cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes in detail. At the same time, based on two hypotheses of built environment on cardiovascular health, we summarized the roles of behavioral patterns andenvironmental factors in the relationship between built environment and cardiovascular health. We proposed that behavioral patterns and environmental factors may play important mediating roles in the relationship between built environment and cardiovascular health, which can aid to better quantify the exposure-response relationship between built environment and cardiovascular health and provide a scientific basis for constructing a harmonious and healthy city.

International ports play critical roles in maintaining transportation flows and sustaining the effectiveness of global maritime logistics. Although the concept of versatile ports has been introduced to represent the specific patterns that these ports play at the regional and global levels, there is still a need for the design and development of computational approaches that support these notions. This paper introduces a flexible multi-layer network approach for an international maritime network whose interest is that it offers a flexible model that favours the identification of the different transportation flows and versatile ports. The model is complemented by a series of structural indices complemented by a new overlap measure that evaluates the specific role of a given port across various transportation trades. The whole approach is implemented and experimented with using massive AIS maritime data that supports the automatic generation of the multi-layer network, and derivation of the structural measures while maintaining a flexible view of the maritime network. The experiments applied to the global maritime transportation network identify key versatile ports and highlight significant differences at the regional and trade flow levels.

The circle of Willis constitutes the primary collateral circulation of the brain, exerting a significant influence on the distribution of intracranial blood flow. Variations of the circle of Willis can impact the cerebrovascular diseases by diminishing collateral compensation capacity and altering the stability of intracranial hemodynamics. This paper reviews the research progress on the association between circle of Willis and cerebral large vessel disease [such as intracranial arterial dolichoectasia (IADE) and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS)], as well as cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), so as to provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment for these diseases.

Abstract Background The Plasmodium vivax merozoite restrictively invades immature erythrocytes, suggesting that its ligand(s) might interact with corresponding receptor(s) that are selectively abundant on reticulocytes to complete the invasion. Finding the ligand‒receptor interaction involved in P. vivax invasion is critical to vivax malaria management; nevertheless, it remains to be unraveled. Methods A library of reticulocyte receptors and P. vivax ligands were expressed by a HEK293E mammalian cell expression system and were then used to screen the interaction using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A flow cytometry-based erythrocyte binding assay and bio-layer interferometry experiment were further utilized to cellularly and quantitatively identify the ligand‒receptor interaction, respectively. Results Plasmodium vivax merozoite-specific thrombospondin-related anonymous protein (PvMTRAP) was found to interact with human CD36 using systematic screening. This interaction was specific at a molecular level from in vitro analysis and comparable to that of P. vivax Duffy binding protein (PvDBP) and Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) (K D: 37.0 ± 1.4 nM and 7.7 ± 0.5 nM, respectively). Flow cytometry indicated that PvMTRAP preferentially binds to reticulocytes, on which CD36 is selectively present. Conclusions Human CD36 is selectively abundant on reticulocytes and is able to interact specifically with PvMTRAP, suggesting that it may function as a ligand and receptor during the invasion of reticulocytes by P. vivax. Baiyuerius is a newly erected genus of Coelotinae spiders comprising five species distributed in southern China and northern Vietnam. Two additional new species, B. shenzhen sp. nov. (male and female) and B. yuelu sp. nov. (male and female), are described here. Three new combinations are proposed, namely Baiyuerius acroprocessus (Zhang, Zhu & Wang, 2017) comb. nov., Baiyuerius globasus (Wang, Peng & Kim, 1996) comb. nov. and Baiyuerius rugosus (Wang, Peng & Kim, 1996) comb. nov. Descriptions, photographs, and a distribution map of the known and newly proposed species are provided.

Background: Research into the pivotal role of potassium in chronic diseases and their comorbidities remains scarce. Our aim is to elucidate the relationship between potassium and chronic diseases, including comorbid conditions, and to provide evidence-based recommendations for potassium intake in patients. Methods: This study is anchored in a representative, population-based survey conducted in Zhejiang Province, China, in 2017, encompassing participants aged 18 to 69 years. Data collection included questionnaire responses, physical measurements, and biological samples, obtained through a multistage cluster random sampling method. A subset of 1496 participants provided complete 24 h urine samples. Results: The median age of the participants was 48.0 years (interquartile range [IQR] 24.0), with 51.1% being female, and hypertension was identified in more than one third (35.6%) of the participants. The prevalence of diabetes was approximately 9.0%, dyslipidemia was found in 34.2%, and microalbuminuria in 8.8%. The 24 h urinary excretion levels were 3613.3 mg/24 h (IQR 2161.7) for sodium and 1366.0 mg/24 h (IQR 824.9) for potassium, respectively. Potassium excretion exhibited an inverse relationship with blood pressure. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between potassium excretion and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, with an elevation of 0.03 mmol/L (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.00 to 0.05). In binary logistic regression analysis, individuals in the fourth quartile of potassium excretion (Q4) exhibited an odds ratio (OR) of 0.56 (95% CI 0.36–0.87) for hypertension compared to those in the first quartile (Q1). Urinary potassium excretion was inversely associated with low HDL-C levels, with Q4 individuals having 0.62 times the odds of having low HDL-C levels (OR, 0.62; 95% CI 0.39–1.00) compared to Q1. Conclusions: Potassium excretion demonstrated a direct negative correlation with certain comorbidities. This study underscores the pivotal role of potassium in the management of chronic diseases and associated comorbidities, thereby highlighting the significance of potassium in both public health initiatives and clinical practice.

Large components are crucial in modern industrial applications, especially for internal gap monitoring and specific assembly methods. This paper examines the assembly of hydroelectric generator rotors and stators, introducing a spatial relative position monitoring system using multiple sensors. A dedicated position monitoring program is designed, and error sources within the system are thoroughly explored. Detailed error analysis and modeling reveal that verticality and angular errors significantly impact monitoring accuracy. To address this, two error control methods are proposed to effectively mitigate these issues, ensuring precise assembly of large components.

Leaf angle (LA) is closely related to plant architecture, photosynthesis and density tolerance in maize. In the current study, we used a recombinant inbred line population constructed by two maize-inbred lines to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling LA. Based on the average LA in three environments, 13 QTLs were detected, with the logarithm of odds ranging from 2.7 to 7.21, and the phenotypic variation explained by a single QTL ranged from 3.93% to 12.64%. A stable QTL, qLA2-3, on chromosome 2 was detected and was considered to be the major QTL controlling the LA. On the basis of verifying the genetic effect of qLA2-3, a fine map was used to narrow the candidate interval, and finally, the target segment was located at a physical distance of approximately 338.46 kb (B73 RefGen_v4 version), containing 16 genes. Re-sequencing and transcriptome results revealed that five candidate genes may be involved in the regulation of LA. The results enrich the information for molecular marker-assisted selection of maize LA and provide genetic resources for the breeding of dense planting varieties.

Salt stress represses the growth and development of plants that mainly depend on the continual propagation and differentiation of stem cells. WUSCHEL (WUS)/WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX (WOX) family proteins determine stem cell fate in plants under ever-changing environments. It is not yet known how plant stem cell homeostasis is regulated under salt stress. Methionine synthase catalyzes the formation of methionine by methylating homocysteine in the one-carbon metabolism pathway. In this work, we investigated the role of Arabidopsis METHIONINE SYNTHASE 2 (AtMS2) in stem cell homeostasis under salt stress. The results showed that AtMS2 represses the stem cell maintenance of Arabidopsis in response to salt stress. Under normal growth conditions, AtMS2 is mainly localized in the cytoplasm. However, under salt stress, it exhibits significant accumulation in the nucleus. AtMS2 interacts with the WUS/WOX protein, and, together, they repress WUS/WOX expression by binding to its promoter. The mutation in AtMS2 resulted in enhanced salt tolerance. Therefore, AtMS2 might act as a key negative regulator to repress the stem cell maintenance and growth of Arabidopsis under salt stress.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death, distinguished from apoptosis, autophagy, and programmed necrosis and has received much attention since it was defined in 2012. Ferroptotic cells physiologically exhibit iron metabolism dysregulation, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation. Morphologically, they show plasma membrane disruption, cytoplasmic swelling, and mitochondrial condensation. Osteoporosis is taken more and more seriously as the proportion of the aging population continues to increase globally. Interestingly, ferroptosis has been demonstrated to be involved in the development and progression of osteoporosis in many extant studies. The review summarizes iron metabolism, lipid peroxidation, and the different regulatory signals in ferroptosis. Changes in signaling mechanisms within osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes after ferroptosis occur are explained here. Studies showed ferroptosis play an important role in different osteoporosis models (diabetes osteoporosis, postmenopausal osteoporosis, glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis). Inhibitors and EC (Exos) targeting ferroptosis could ameliorate bone loss in osteoporotic mice by protecting cells against lipid peroxidation. Shortly, we hope that more effective and appropriate clinical therapy means will be utilized in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Obesity is a chronic disease that affects the energy balance of the whole body. In addition to increasing fat mass, tissue fibrosis occurred in white adipose tissue in obese condition. Fibrosis is the over-activation of fibroblasts leading to excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix, which could be caused by various factors, including the status of adipocytes. The morphology of adipocytes responds rapidly and dynamically to nutrient fluctuations. Adaptive hypertrophy of normal adipocytes protects peripheral organs from damage from lipotoxicity. However, the biological behavior of hypertrophic adipocytes in chronic obesity is abnormally altered. Adipocytes lead to fibrotic remodeling of the extracellular matrix by inducing unresolved chronic inflammation, persistent hypoxia, and increasing myofibroblast numbers. Moreover, adipocyte-induced fibrosis not only restricts the flexible expansion and contraction of adipose tissue but also initiates the development of various diseases through cellular autonomic and paracrine effects. Regarding anti-fibrotic therapy, dysregulated intracellular signaling and epigenetic changes represent potential candidate targets. Thus, modulation of adipocytes may provide potential therapeutic avenues for reversing pathological fibrosis in adipose tissue and achieving the anti-obesity purpose.

BackgroundIn contemporary study, the death of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients need precise and expedient prognostic methodologies.ObjectiveTo develop and validate a prognostic model tailored to ESCC patients, leveraging the power of machine learning (ML) techniques and drawing insights from comprehensive datasets of laboratory-derived blood parameters.MethodsThree ML approaches, including Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Random Survival Forest (RSF), and the classical Cox method, were employed to develop models on a dataset of 2521 ESCC patients with 27 features. The models were evaluated by concordance index (C-index) and time receiver operating characteristics (Time ROC) curves. We used the optimal model to evaluate the correlation between features and prognosis and divide patients into low- and high-risk groups by risk stratification. Its performance was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curve and the comparison with AJCC8 stage. We further evaluate the comprehensive effectiveness of the model in ESCC subgroup by risk score and KDE (kernel density estimation) plotting.ResultsRSF’s C-index (0.746) and AUC (three-year AUC 0.761, five-year AUC 0.771) had slight advantage over GBM and the classical Cox method. Subsequently, 14 features such as N stage, T stage, surgical margin, tumor length, age, Dissected LN number, MCH, Na, FIB, DBIL, CL, treatment, vascular invasion, and tumor grade were selected to build the model. Based on these, we found significant difference for survival rate between low-(3-year OS 81.8%, 5-year OS 69.8%) and high-risk (3-year OS 25.1%, 5-year OS 11.5%) patients in training set, which was also verified in test set (all P < 0.0001). Compared with the AJCC8th stage system, it showed a greater discriminative ability which is also in good agreement with its staging ability.ConclusionWe developed an ESCC prognostic model with good performance by clinical features and laboratory blood parameters.

Diabetic retinopathy is an ocular disease caused by long-term damage to the retina due to high blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar can impair the microvasculature in the retina, leading to vascular abnormalities and the formation of abnormal new blood vessels. These changes can manifest in the retina as hemorrhages, leaks, vessel dilation, retinal edema, and retinal detachment. The retinas of individuals with diabetes exhibit different morphologies compared to those without the condition. Most histological images cannot be accurately described using traditional geometric shapes or methods. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate and classify the morphology of retinas with varying degrees of severity using multifractal geometry. In the initial experiments, two-dimensional empirical mode decomposition was employed to extract high-frequency detailed features, and the classification process was based on the most relevant features in the multifractal spectrum associated with disease factors. To eliminate less significant features, the random forest algorithm was utilized. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 96%, sensitivity of 96%, and specificity of 95%.

Abstract Background Neuropathic pain (NP) is a chronic pathological pain that affects the quality of life and is a huge medical burden for affected patients. In this study, we aimed to explore the effects of secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) on NP. Methods We established a chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat model, knocked down SPP1 via an intrathecal injection, and/or activated the extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) pathway with insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF‐1) treatment. Pain behaviors, including paw withdrawal threshold (PWT), paw withdrawal latency (PWL), lifting number, and frequency, were assessed. After sacrificing rats, the L4‐L5 dorsal root ganglion was collected. Then, SPP1 levels were determined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blot analysis. The levels of interleukin (IL)‐1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α, IL‐6, IL‐10, epidermal growth factor (EGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor (TGF)‐β were determined using qPCR and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of ERK pathway factors were determined via western blot analysis. Results We found that CCI decreased PWT and PWL, increased the lifting number and frequency, and upregulated SPP1 levels. The loss of SPP1 reversed these CCI‐induced effects. Additionally, CCI upregulated IL‐1β, TNF‐α, IL‐6, EGF, and VEGF levels, downregulated TGF‐β levels, and activated the ERK pathway, while silencing of SPP1 abrogated these CCI‐induced effects. Moreover, IGF‐1 treatment reversed the effects of SPP1 loss. Conclusions The data indicate that silencing SPP1 attenuates NP via inactivation of the ERK pathway, suggesting that SPP1 may be a promising target for NP treatment.

Plasmodium vivax, the most widespread human malaria parasite, and P. knowlesi, an emerging Plasmodium that infects humans, are the phylogenetically closest malarial species that infect humans, which may induce cross-species reactivity across most co-endemic areas in Southeast Asia. The thrombospondin-related anonymous protein (TRAP) family is indispensable for motility and host cell invasion in the growth and development of Plasmodium parasites. The merozoite-specific TRAP (MTRAP), expressed in blood-stage merozoites, is supposed to be essential for human erythrocyte invasion. We aimed to characterize MTRAPs in blood-stage P. vivax and P. knowlesi parasites and ascertain their cross-species immunoreactivity. Recombinant P. vivax and P. knowlesi MTRAPs of full-length ectodomains were expressed in a mammalian expression system. The MTRAP-specific immunoglobulin G, obtained from immune animals, was used in an immunofluorescence assay for subcellular localization and invasion inhibitory activity in blood-stage parasites was determined. The cross-species humoral immune responses were analyzed in the sera of patients with P. vivax or P. knowlesi infections. The MTRAPs of P. vivax (PvMTRAP) and P. knowlesi (PkMTRAP) were localized on the rhoptry body of merozoites in blood-stage parasites. Both anti-PvMTRAP and anti-PkMTRAP antibodies inhibited erythrocyte invasion of blood-stage P. knowlesi parasites. The humoral immune response to PvMTRAP showed high immunogenicity, longevity, and cross-species immunoreactivity with P. knowlesi. MTRAPs are promising candidates for development of vaccines and therapeutics against vivax and knowlesi malaria.

Abstract Radiotherapy and chemotherapy remain the mainstay of treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC), although their efficacy is limited. A detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying CRC progression could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies. Although it has been established that MYC signaling is dysregulated in various human cancers, direct targeting MYC remains challenging due to its "undruggable" protein structure. Post-translational modification of proteins can affect their stability, activation, and subcellular localization. Hence, targeting the post-translational modification of MYC represents a promising approach to disrupting MYC signaling. Herein, we revealed that NEK8 positively regulates CRC progression by phosphorylating c-MYC protein at serine 405, which exhibited enhanced stability via polyubiquitination. Our findings shed light on the role of NEK8/MYC signaling in CRC progression, offering a novel and helpful target for colorectal cancer treatment. Video Abstract

Abstract Background Infections with Plasmodium ovale are widely distributed but rarely investigated, and the resulting burden of disease has been underestimated. Plasmodium ovale curtisi Duffy binding protein domain region II (PocDBP-RII) is an essential ligand for reticulocyte recognition and host cell invasion by P. ovale curtisi. However, the genomic variation, antigenicity and immunogenicity of PocDBP-RII remain major knowledge gaps. Methods A total of 93 P. ovale curtisi samples were collected from migrant workers who returned to China from 17 countries in Africa between 2012 and 2016. The genetic polymorphism, natural selection and copy number variation (CNV) were investigated by sequencing and real-time PCR. The antigenicity and immunogenicity of the recombinant PocDBP-RII (rPocDBP-RII) protein were further examined, and the humoral and cellular responses of immunized mice were assessed using protein microarrays and flow cytometry. Results Efficiently expressed and purified rPocDBP-RII (39 kDa) was successfully used as an antigen for immunization in mice. The haplotype diversity (Hd) of PocDBP-RII gene was 0.105, and the nucleotide diversity index (π) was 0.00011. No increased copy number was found among the collected isolates of P. ovale curtisi. Furthermore, rPocDBP-RII induced persistent antigen-specific antibody production with a serum IgG antibody titer of 1: 16,000. IFN-γ-producing T cells, rather than IL-10-producing cells, were activated in response to the stimulation of rPocDBP-RII. Compared to PBS-immunized mice (negative control), there was a higher percentage of CD4+CD44highCD62L− T cells (effector memory T cells) and CD8+CD44highCD62L+ T cells (central memory T cells) in rPocDBP-RII‑immunized mice. Conclusions PocDBP-RII sequences were highly conserved in clinical isolates of P. ovale curtisi. rPocDBP-RII protein could mediate protective blood-stage immunity through IFN-γ-producing CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and memory T cells, in addition to inducing specific antibodies. Our results suggested that rPocDBP-RII protein has potential as a vaccine candidate to provide assessment and guidance for malaria control and elimination activities. Graphical Abstract

Chemotherapy is an important factor leading to male infertility. It is crucial to discover safe and effective treatments to prevent male reproductive injury caused by chemotherapy. The Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide peptide (GLPP) has multiple pharmacological activities. The purpose of this study was to determine whether GLPP could protect the male sperm production from chemotherapeutic injury using a mouse model, with testicular damage induced by cyclophosphamide (CP). CP (50 mg/kg/day) was injected intraperitoneally into male ICR mice gavaged with different doses of GLPP at certain spermatogenic stages. The experimental results showed that GLPP alleviated the CP-induced reduction in reproductive organ coefficients and sperm parameters and reduced the morphological damage of testicular tissues in a dose-dependent manner. GLPP significantly improved the reproductive index, sperm-related parameters, sex hormone levels, and histological testis architecture at different spermatogenic stages. Furthermore, GLPP significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), Nrf2, and HO-1, and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and Keap-1 in the testicular tissue, indicating reduced oxidative stress. In addition, GLPP limited CP-induced apoptosis via a reduction in Bax expression and increase in Bcl-2 expression. This study suggests that GLPP plays a protective role in spermatogenesis by reducing chemotherapeutic injury and might be developed into drug for male patients receiving chemotherapy.

Ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution is a leading environmental health threat worldwide. PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1.0 μm, also known as PM1, has been implicated in the morbidity and mortality of several cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular diseases. However, previous studies have mostly focused on analyzing fine PM (PM2.5) associated with disease metrics, such as emergency department visits and mortality, rather than ultrafine PM, including PM1. This study aimed to evaluate the association between short-term PM1 exposure and hospital admissions (HAs) for all-cause diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory infections (RIs), as well as the associated expenditures, using Beijing as a case study. Here, based on air pollution and hospital admission data in Beijing from 2015 to 2017, we performed a time-series analysis and meta-analysis. It was found that a 10 μg/m3 increase in the PM1 concentration significantly increased all-cause disease HAs by 0.07% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): [0, 0.14%]) in Beijing between 2015 and 2017, while the COPD and RI-related HAs were not significantly associated with short-term PM1 exposure. Meanwhile, we estimated the attributable number of HAs and hospital expenditures related to all-cause diseases. This study revealed that an average of 6644 (95% CI: [351, 12,917]) cases of HAs were attributable to ambient PM1, which was estimated to be associated with a 106 million CNY increase in hospital expenditure annually (95% CI: [5.6, 207]), accounting for 0.32% (95% CI: [0.02, 0.62%]) of the annual total expenses. The findings reported here highlight the underlying impact of ambient PM pollution on health risks and economic burden to society and indicate the need for further policy actions on public health.

The magnetic shielding device, made of high-permeability soft magnetic material, is sensitive to external influences and requires a protective steel enclosure. A steel enclosure, being strongly ferrimagnetic, can alter the surrounding magnetic field distribution, thus impacting the shielding effectiveness. This study proposes a novel analytical approach to quantify this effect, which has not been previously researched. The method develops a simplified finite element simulation model based on the structural symmetry of the steel enclosure. By using this model, this study analyzes the impact of steel structures with varying heights, widths, and remanent magnetization values. The validity of the method is confirmed through experimental tests on steel buildings. The findings offer insights into the optimal placement of magnetic shielding systems and provide theoretical guidance for designing large-scale magnetic shielding devices.
