Objective To compare the effects of latent phase and active phase of labor analgesia with combined spinal-epidural ropivacaine and sufentanil. Methods The investigation covered 200 full-term, single-birth participants and they were randomized in to latent phase group and active phase group (100 cases each group) and received combined spinal-epidural labor analgesia when their cervices opening 0.5 cm to 2.5 cm, 3 cm respectively. VAS before analgesia and during various stages of labor, time for the first stage of labor and the second stage of labor, delivery methods,oxytocin usage, Apgar Score and maternal motor block degree were recorded and analyzed by t test, chi-square test. Results VAS before analgesia and 10 to 30 minutes after analgesia have no significant difference; VAS for the latent phase group was lower than active phase group when cervix opening 7cm to 8 cm, 10 cm after analgesia (P＜0.01); Time length for the first and the second stage of labor, delivery way, oxytocin usage, Apgar Score and maternal motor block degree were similar. Conclusions It is feasible and safe to treat latent phase labor analgesia with combined spinal-epidural ropivacaine and sufentanil.

The preparation of ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/organoclay nanocomposites by continuous elongational flow technique was investigated in a novel eccentric rotor extruder (ERE). The distribution and dispersion morphologies of organo-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) layers were revealed and observed by ash determination, wide angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal and thermal-mechanical behaviors were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter, thermal gravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The mechanical performances was measured by tensile and impact test. The morphologies of the nanocomposites evidenced that the OMMT layers can be well intercalated or/and exfoliated by UHMWPE matrix, then the fabrication mechanism of intercalated and exfoliated OMMT structures under continuous elongational flow was discussed. Sisal fibers (SFs) were pretreated by heat treatment (HT). The SFs were mixed with a biodegradable material, polylactide (PLA), and the composites were prepared by hot press molding. The effects of the HT temperature and time on the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated, and the HT mechanism was studied by scanning electron microscopy and infrared, x-ray photoelectron, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. The results show that an appropriate HT can remove strongly hydrophilic materials such as hemicelluloses from the fibers, and thus decrease their hydrophilicity, thereby improving the retting between the fibers and the matrix. This improves fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion, which can improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The technology of steam explosion was adopted to modify sisal fiber (SF) material and two different carbon particles, expanded graphite and conductive carbon black (CCB), were in situ coated on the surface of SF during steam explosion process. The DC conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (SE) of the modified SF/polypropylene (PP) composites were studied and the measurement of electromagnetic interference (EMI) SE was conducted in two frequency ranges of 400-1,000 MHz and 1-18 GHz. The experimental results showed that this novel coating technology could improve the SE of the modified SF/PP composites significantly, which has a strong dependence on the loadings of the expanded graphite modified sisal fiber (SF-EG) and conductive carbon black modified sisal fiber (SF-CCB). When the loadings of SF-EG and SF-CCB reached 50 wt%, the maximum values of the SE were 33 dB and 51 dB, respectively. For the modified SF/PP composites, the experimental EMI SE values are in good correlation with the theoretical calculation values in far field of electromagnetic radiation. POLYM. This work aimed to study, for the first time, the melt blending of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer by a novel vane extruder to toughen PLA. The phase morphologies, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PLA/EAA blends of three weight ratios (90/10, 80/20, and 70/30) were investigated. The results showed that the addition of EAA improves the toughness of PLA at the expense of the tensile strength to a certain degree and leads the transition from brittle fracture of PLA into ductile fracture. The 80/20 (w/w) PLA/EAA blend presents the maximum elongation at break (13.93%) and impact strength (3.18 kJ/m2), which is 2.2 and 1.2 times as large as those of PLA, respectively. The 90/10 and 80/20 PLA/EAA blends exhibit droplet-matrix morphologies with number average radii of 0.30-0.73 μm, whereas the 70/30 PLA/EAA blend presents an elongated co-continuous structure with large radius (2.61 μm) of EAA phase and there exists PLA droplets in EAA phase. These three blends with different phase morphologies display different characteristic linear viscoelastic properties in the low frequency region, which were investigated in terms of their complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss tangent, and Cole-Cole plots. Specially, the 80/20 PLA/EAA blend presents two circular arcs on its Cole-Cole plot. So, the longest relaxation time of the 80/20 blend was obtained from its complex viscosity imaginary part plot, and the interfacial tension between PLA and EAA, which is 4.4 mN/m, was calculated using the Palierne model. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Objective: To explore the expression changes of mRNA and protein of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) in adipose tissues and uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) in muscle tissues of rats which were treated with repeated fasting/refeeding and followed by fed with high-fat diet, and their possible mechanism on lipid metabolism., Methods: The model of repeating fasting/refeeding rats (repeated cycles of 1-day fasting and 1-day refeeding for 6 weeks fed with common-fat diet, RFR) was designed. At the end of the 6th week, the RFR rats were switched to high-fat diet every day (RFR-CF/HF). Moreover, the control rats were randomly divided into two groups and then fed with high-fat diet (HF) and common-fat diet (CF) respectively for 6 weeks. All rats were killed at the end of the 6th and the 12th week, serum and plasma samples were taken from abdominal aorta, and then the concentration of serum lipids, glucose, free fatty acid (FFA), and plasma insulin were measured. The histomorphological changes of liver tissues were observed by HE staining. The expression level of mRNA and protein of UCP2 in adipose tissues and UCP3 in muscle tissues was respectively measured by RT-PCR and Western blot., Results: (1) The concentration of serum glucose in RFR group was significantly lower than that in control group (P < 0.05), while the concentration of serum FFA, expression level of UCP2 mRNA, UCP3 mRNA and protein were significantly higher than those in control group (P < 0.05). (2) The concentration of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and plasma insulin in RFR-CF/HF group was significantly lower than that in HF group, but significantly higher than that in CF group (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum FFA was significantly lower than that of HF and CF groups (P < 0.01). The expression level in UCP2, UCP3 mRNA and protein was significantly higher than that of HF group, but significantly lower than that of CF group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The feeding pattern of repeated fasting/refeeding can decrease the obese degree induced by high-fat diet, increase the mRNA and protein expression of UCP2 in adipose tissues and UCP3 in muscle tissues, up-regulate the proton leak caused by obesity, and improve the rate of basic energy metabolism in rats.

Objective: To explore arsenic-induced oxidative stress and the protective efficacy of α-lipoic acid and vitamin c., Methods: 50 male SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups. Ten rats (the control group) were exposed to deionized water for 6 weeks, and the others were alone exposed to sodium arsenite (50 mg/L water) for 6 weeks, at the same time, three group rats were administered intragastrically (i.g.) with α-lipoic acid 10 mg×kg(-1)×d(-1) and vitamin C 25 mg×kg(-1)×d(-1) either alone or in combination. At the end of experiment, blood was drawn from abdominal aorta, and then the blood, brain and liver of rats were used for biochemical assays, including blood glutathione (GSH), δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD ), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) level. At the same time, the super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, ATPase activity of brain and liver were determined. The caspase activity of brain were also determined., Results: There were a significant increase in ROS level (P < 0.05), but a significant decrease in δ-ALAD activity (P < 0.01) in the chronic arsenic toxicity model group compared with the control group. These alterations were marginally restored by co-administration of vitamin C and α-lipoic acid individually, while significant recovery was observed in the animals supplemented with both the antioxidants together with arsenite in rat (P < 0.05). At the same time, there was a significant increase in the ROS and TBARS level of the brain and liver (P < 0.05), and caspase activity of the brain (P < 0.05), while there was a significant decrease in antioxidant enzymes and ATPase activity on arsenite exposure in rats (P < 0.05). These alterations were also marginally restored by co-administration of vitamin C and α-lipoic acid individually, while significant recovery was observed in the animals supplemented with both the antioxidants together with arsenite in rat (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Arsenite-induced oxidative stress can be significantly protected by co-administration of α-lipoic acid and vitamin C individually, but the best effects could be observed with combined administration of two antioxidants during arsenite exposure in animals. The dietary intervention of or supplementation with natural dietary nutrients is possible to prevent the effects of arsenic in populations of risk.
