This study investigated the effectiveness of applying a smartphone to reduce the hyperactive/impulsive behaviors of 3 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in class. A smartphone that can simultaneously provide vibration and visual text prompts was adopted in this study to remind the participants when they exhibited hyperactive/impulsive behaviors. This study adopted the multiple baseline design across subjects under the broader rubric of the single-subject research design, including 2 baseline phases and 2 intervention phases. The results show that the time spent engaged in target behaviors decreased for participants during the intervention phases, compared to the baseline phases. The findings show that applying the vibration and visual text prompts of a smartphone is a feasible prompting strategy to assist students with ADHD to reduce their hyperactive/impulsive behaviors in class.

Abstract Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an immune-responsive tumor with spontaneous remission. T cells play a pivotal role in the anti-lymphoma immune response. However, the dynamics of T cells during treatment, their impact on FL clinical outcomes, and the risk factors contributing to T-cell cytopenia remain largely unexplored. T-cell and their subsets in the peripheral blood of FL patients at diagnosis, during 2–4 cycles and after 6 cycles of treatment, as well as healthy individuals were detected by flow-cytometry. The predictive effects of T cells for early progression and risks for T-cell cytopenia were analyzed. FL patients exhibited a significant decrease in CD3+, CD4+, and CD8 + T cells compared to healthy individuals, with aging intensifying the decline of CD3+, and CD4 + T cells. Notably, a reduction in CD4 + T cells, predominantly contributing to treatment-related T-cell reduction, was only observed in patients undergoing Bendamustine-based regimens. Abstract To elucidate the specific and shared genetic background of schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD), this study explored the association of polygenic liabilities for SCZ and BPD with educational attainment and cognitive aging. Among 106,806 unrelated community participants from the Taiwan Biobank, we calculated the polygenic risk score (PRS) for SCZ (PRSSCZ) and BPD (PRSBPD), shared PRS between SCZ and BPD (PRSSCZ+BPD), and SCZ-specific PRS (PRSSCZvsBPD). Based on the sign-concordance of the susceptibility variants with SCZ/BPD, PRSSCZ was split into PRSSCZ_concordant/PRSSCZ_discordant, and PRSBPD was split into PRSBPD_concordant/PRSBPD_discordant. Ordinal logistic regression models were used to estimate the association with educational attainment. Linear regression models were used to estimate the associations with cognitive aging (n = 27,005), measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and with MMSE change (n = 6194 with mean follow-up duration of 3.9 y) in individuals aged≥ 60 years. PRSSCZ, PRSBPD, and PRSSCZ+BPD were positively associated with educational attainment, whereas PRSSCZvsBPD was negatively associated with educational attainment. PRSSCZ was negatively associated with MMSE, while PRSBPD was positively associated with MMSE. The concordant and discordant parts of polygenic liabilities have contrasting association, PRSSCZ_concordant and PRSBPD_concordant mainly determined these effects mentioned above. PRSSCZvsBPD predicted decreases in the MMSE scores. Using a large collection of community samples, this study provided evidence for the contrasting effects of polygenic architecture in SCZ and BPD on educational attainment and cognitive aging and suggested that SCZ and BPD were not genetically homogeneous.

Abstract Aims To investigate the fundus characteristics and macular optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) metrics in patients with myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNF) and to identify the associations among myopic parameters, fundus metrics, and OCTA metrics. Methods The single-center case-control study included 15 patients with monocular MRNF and 15 patients without MRNF, matched for age, affected eyes’ spherical equivalent error (SER), and axial length (AL) between May 2021 and December 2021. Fundus features, including the entire MRNF area (Area1), the denser MRNF area (Area2), and the shortest distance from the fovea to the MRNF border (Df−m), along with ocular parameters, including SER, AL, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and OCTA metrics at the fovea, including choroidal (ChT) and retinal (ReT) thicknesses at the fovea, the foveal avascular zone area (FAZ), foveal avascular zone perimeter (FAZP), FAZ-circularity index (FAZ-CI), and foveal vessel density in a 300-µm wide region (FD-300), were assessed. Results The SER, AL, and BCVA were significantly different, and the ChT was thinner in the affected eyes than in the contralateral eyes. Compared with matched eyes, affected eyes had reduced BCVA and thinner ReT. In the affected eyes, both Area1 and Area2 were negatively correlated with SER (r 1 = -0.84, r 2 = -0.65), △SER (r 1 = -0.86, r 2 = -0.61), ReT at the vertical superior 3 mm (VS) (r 1 = -0.78, r 2 = -0.67), and ChT_VS (r 1 = -0.64, r 2 = -0.62), and positively correlated with AL (r 1 = 0.82, r 2 = 0.52) and BCVA (r 1 = 0.54, r 2 = 0.59). Df−m was negatively correlated with BCVA (r = -0.57). Conclusion The presence of MRNF affects BCVA and ReT at the fovea. The area of the MRNF, as well as the distance from the MRNF to the fovea, are closely associated with the affected eyes’ BCVA, SER, AL, and the degree of anisometropia.

Objective To explore the relationship between monocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio （MHR） and the progression and prognosis of type 2 diabetic kidney disease （DKD）. Methods From January 1， 2017 to December 31， 2022， 269 type 2 DKD patients were selected as DKD group while 269 healthy medical check-ups during the same period as healthy group. And the differences in MHR levels of two groups were compared. According to median MHR， DKD group were assigned into low-level MHR and high-level MHR sub-groups. General profiles， clinical data， the incidence rate of endpoint events and cumulative renal survival were compared two groups. Cox regression analysis was performed for exploring the independent risk factors for poor renal prognosis in DKD patients and drawing receiver operator characteristic curve （ROC） for exploring the diagnostic efficacy of MHR for poor prognosis of DKD. The results of Cox regression analysis indicated that MHR was an independent risk factor for a poor prognosis of DKD； The results of ROC curve showed that the area under the curve of MHR was 0.747 with a sensitivity of 0.820 and a specificity of 0.605. Conclusion DKD patients tend to have higher levels of MHR as compared with healthy individuals. As an independent risk for the progression of renal function in DKD patients， MHR has some diagnostic value for a poor prognosis of DKD. However， its specificity is not high.

Abstract Background Pectus excavatum is the most common chest wall deformity, with the Nuss procedure being the preferred surgical approach for correction. However, the decision to use thoracoscopic assistance remains challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the perioperative outcomes of thoracoscopic-assisted versus non-thoracoscopic-assisted minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (TA-MIRPE vs. NTA-MIRPE). Methods A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Medline, Embase, WOS, and CBM databases for studies published from 2010 to the present related to this topic. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.0 and STATA 15.0, with primary comparisons focusing on postoperative complications and the incidence of poor incision healing. Results Eighteen studies involving a total of 5933 patients were included in the analysis, with 1670 undergoing non-thoracoscopic surgery and 4263 receiving thoracoscopic surgery. The meta-analysis revealed that, compared to the NTA-MIRPE group, the TA-MIRPE group had longer operation times [SMD = 1.71, 95% CI (1.14, 2.28), P < 0.001] and extended postoperative hospital stays [SMD = 0.12, 95% CI (0.04, 0.20), P = 0.004]. However, the TA-MIRPE group showed a lower incidence of postoperative complications [OR = 0.48, 95% CI (0.35, 0.65), z = 4.63, P < 0.001] and higher patient satisfaction [OR = 1.88, 95% CI (1.32, 2.67), z = 3.51, P < 0.001]. Conclusion While TA-MIRPE is associated with longer operation times and hospital stays, it offers greater patient satisfaction, reduces postoperative complications, and enhances surgical safety.

Cancer represents a profound challenge to healthcare systems and individuals worldwide. The development of multiple drug resistance is a major problem in cancer therapy and can result in progression of the disease. In our previous studies, we developed small‐molecule inhibitors targeting ubiquitin‐specific peptidase 24 (USP24) to combat drug‐resistant lung cancer. Recently, we found that the USP24 inhibitor NCI677397 induced ferroptosis, a type of programmed cell death, in drug‐resistant cancer cells by increasing lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. In the present study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms and found that the targeting of USP24 by NCI677397 increased gene expression of most lipogenesis‐related genes, such as acyl‐CoA synthetase long‐chain family member 4 (ACSL4), and activated autophagy. In addition, the activity of several antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), was inhibited by NCI677397 treatment via an increase in protein degradation, thereby inducing lipid ROS production and lipid peroxidation. In summary, we demonstrated that NCI677397 induced a marked increase in lipid ROS levels, subsequently causing lipid peroxidation and leading to the ferroptotic death of drug‐resistant cancer cells. Our study provides new insights into the clinical use of USP24 inhibitors as ferroptosis inducers (FINs) to block drug resistance during chemotherapy.

Abstract The Nab-paclitaxel combined with gemcitabine (AG) regimen is the main chemotherapy regimen for pancreatic cancer, but drug resistance often occurs. Currently, the ability to promote sensitization in drug-resistant cases is an important clinical issue, and the strategy of repurposing conventional drugs is a promising strategy. This study aimed to identify a classic drug that targets chemotherapy resistance’s core signaling pathways and combine it with the AG regimen to enhance chemosensitivity. We also aimed to find reliable predictive biomarkers of drug combination sensitivity. Using RNA sequencing, we found that abnormal PI3K/Akt pathway activation plays a central role in mediating resistance to the AG regimen. Subsequently, through internal and external verification of randomly selected AG-resistant patient-derived organoid (PDO) and PDO xenograft models, we discovered for the first time that the classic anti-inflammatory drug sulindac K-80003, an inhibitor of the PI3K/Akt pathway that we focused on, promoted sensitization in half (14/28) of AG-resistant pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cases. Through RNA-sequencing, multiplex immunofluorescent staining, and immunohistochemistry experiments, we identified cFAM124A as a novel biomarker through which sulindac K-80003 promotes AG sensitization. Its role as a sensitization marker is explained via the following mechanism: cFAM124A enhances both the mRNA expression of cathepsin L and the activity of the cathepsin L enzyme. This dual effect stimulates the cleavage of RXRα, leading to large amounts of truncated RXRα, which serves as a direct target of K-80003. Consequently, this process results in the pathological activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway. In summary, our study provides a new treatment strategy and novel biological target for patients with drug-resistant pancreatic cancer.

This article introduces a high-power microwave mechanical integrated continuous mining device, which can achieve synchronous cutting of hard rocks by microwave and machinery. The device includes a cutting system, a rotary translation system, a loading system, a high-power microwave system, and a control and monitoring system. The technology of “master-slave follow-up” disc cutter alternating side cutting of rock was proposed, which could improve the effectiveness of rock breaking. The integrated structure of a microwave-cut system was then proposed, and synchronous motion of the microwave-cut system and adjustment of the loading system could be realized. The automatic adjustment technology of the microwave working distance was developed to dynamically control the optimal microwave working distance. The basic functions of the equipment were verified by tests. By comparing the two types of disk cutters, it is found that the master-slave follow-up disk cutter can improve significantly the dust removal effect and rock breaking efficiency in rock breaking process versus the conventional large disc cutter. Cutting tests of slate with or without microwave were conducted using a master-slave follow-up disk cutter. The results show that the cutting patterns of slates change from intermittent chunks (without microwave irradiation) to persistent debris (with microwave irradiation), and the cutting speed is significantly improved (170%). The development of the device provides a scientific basis for changing the conventional mining technology of metal mines and realizing the mechanical continuous mining in hard metal mines.

Abstract Breast cancer (BC) stands as a predominant global malignancy, significantly contributing to female mortality. Recently uncovered, histone lysine lactylation (kla) has assumed a crucial role in cancer progression. However, the correlation with lncRNAs remains ambiguous. Scrutinizing lncRNAs associated with Kla not only improves clinical breast cancer management but also establishes a groundwork for antitumor drug development. We procured breast tissue samples, encompassing both normal and cancerous specimens, from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Utilizing Cox regression and XGBoost methods, we developed a prognostic model using identified kla-related lncRNAs. The model's predictive efficacy underwent validation across training, testing, and the overall cohort. Functional analysis concerning kla-related lncRNAs ensued. We identified and screened 8 kla-related lncRNAs to formulate the risk model. Pathway analysis disclosed the connection between immune-related pathways and the risk model of kla-related lncRNAs. Significantly, the risk scores exhibited a correlation with both immune cell infiltration and immune function, indicating a clear association. Noteworthy is the observation that patients with elevated risk scores demonstrated an increased tumor mutation burden (TMB) and decreased tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) scores, suggesting heightened responses to immune checkpoint blockade. Our study uncovers a potential link between Kla-related lncRNAs and BC, providing innovative therapeutic guidelines for BC management.

The way teachers support students' Knowledge Building discourse may influence their subsequent discourse moves and emotions. However, in previous research on Knowledge Building, teacher scaffolding was rarely scrutinized, especially in offline Knowledge Building discourse; neither was how the support is associated with students' discourse moves or emotions. This study addressed these issues by examining how two teachers scaffolded the offline Knowledge Building discourse of a class of students from grade 2 to grade 3 and the associations between teacher scaffolding and students' discourse moves and emotions. Through discourse analysis, we identified a few patterns of teaching scaffolding for Knowledge Building, including giving instructions, asking for elaboration, revoicing, asking for explanations, inviting different ideas, and inviting new directions. Using correlation analyses, we found positive correlations between teacher asking for explanations and students providing partial or elaborated explanations. Teacher inviting new directions was positively correlated with students' questions. There was a negative correlation between teacher asking for elaboration and student curiosity. This study has implications for how teacher support can be designed to foster desired student discourse moves and emotions.

Abstract Background There are few studies on death education models for nursing students in China. It is of great significance to construct a model of nursing students’ death education combined with clinical practice. This study aims to evaluate the effect of death education on nursing students based on the Peace of Mind Tea House. Methods The randomized controlled trial commenced from February 7 to March 18, 2021,featuring a two-month intercession at a hospital situated in Xiamen, China. The research subjects were chosen using a convenient sampling approach with nursing students from the hospital's internship program. Ninety-two participants were enrolled, with 46 in each group. Thirteen participants were lost to follow-up, corresponding to 14% of the total study population. The samples were then allocated randomly into either the intervention group or the control group. In addition to their hospital internship, the intervention group participated in six death education courses that focused on cognitive, emotional, and motor skills as well as the “Peace of Mind Tea House” program. Control participants will undergo regular internships. Before and two weeks after the course, both groups were evaluated for death anxiety, attitude towards death, and the meaning of life to assess the intervention's effectiveness. Results In the fear of death item of the Death Attitude Scale and the meaning of life section, the post-test score minus the pre-test score of the intervention group were 2.50 ± 3.90 (p = 0.011), and 8.90 ± 11.07 (p = 0.035), respectively. During the communication and sharing session of the reassurance card activity, 41 participants (95.3%) found the activity meaningful. Conclusion Our data analysis demonstrates that nursing students have accepted and acknowledged the Peace of Mind Tea House-based education on death, which positively impacted their attitudes towards deathand the meaning of life. The content of death education should be integrated with traditional culture, and a new model of death education should be constructed with the Heart to Heart cards as its core. This research presents proof of the efficacy of implementing appropriate death education for nursing students, and provides a successful intervention plan to alleviate their future death anxiety and develop a positive outlook on death.
