Abstract

The extrusion of dendrites and gas bubbles can lead to the appearance of dead lithium, which seriously reduces the coulomb efficiency, hindering the rapid development of high‐energy batteries. Therefore, it is very important to study the internal mechanism of the interaction between lithium dendrites and gas bubbles during electrochemical processes. In this paper, we have designed and developed a special in situ observation device for investigating the dendrite behavior. We also modified the phase‐field model to study the growth of lithium dendrites on the electrode with bubbles. The cantilever beam theory was applied to study the interaction between lithium dendrites and gas bubbles. The observed effects comprise the coalescence of gas bubbles, changing of lithium‐ion transport path on graphite electrode surface near the gas bubble, and bending of dendrites in front of the bubble. The local variation in the lithiation speed can be attributed to the insulating properties of the gas bubbles. Phase‐field simulation results of the interaction between dendrites and gas bubbles were consistent with the experimental results. A deeper insight into the gas‐bubble behaviors during dendrite growth with the presented simulation and experiment techniques becomes possible, which could be helpful to choose an appropriate structural design for reducing bubbles and lithium dendrites. 25. In Situ Observation of Lithium Dendrite of Different Graphite Electrodes

Abstract

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have some serious safety problems, such as lithium dendrite formation during charging/discharging cycles that may cause internal short-circuiting, fires, and even explosions. A new double-scale in situ experimental setup, which can record all phenomena during the electrochemical testing, was developed. Lithium dendrite growth behavior of commercial LIBs during small-current-density charging at room temperature was observed in situ. The formation, growth, and dissolution of lithium dendrites, and dead lithium residue were all observed and recorded using this new experimental test system. A detailed model of lithium electrodeposition and dissolution processes was proposed.

Abstract

Temperature-dependent modulus of glass fiber/epoxy composite laminates was studied at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 120℃. The storage modulus, loss modulus, loss factor, and glass transition temperature of two layer-up composite laminates were investigated by dynamic mechanic analysis. Static flexural modulus was also measured by control force mode in dynamic mechanic analysis. A new and simple temperature-dependent model both for the dynamic storage modulus and static flexural modulus was developed. This model depends only on one parameter which has specific physical meaning. The model prediction showed excellent agreement with our own experimental results over the full range of transition region. Furthermore, comparing our model’s prediction and other experimental data of many types of composites, which were studied by other researchers, we point to the fact that our model can be applied to many different polymer matrix composites. Abstract

The effect of elevated temperature on the modulus of glass/epoxy composites was studied. Dynamic mechanic analysis (DMA) was carried out to investigate the storage modulus, loss modulus, loss factor and glass transition temperature. Static flexural modulus was also tested by control force mode in DMA. The effect of elevated temperature on the modulus of the composites was evaluated between 30°C and 120°C. A new temperature-dependent model both for the dynamic storage modulus and static flexural modulus was proposed. The model only needed one parameter to fit the experiment data and showed good accordance with experimental results. The physical meaning for the parameter of the model was given.

32. Influence of physical parameters on residual stresses of polymer composites during the cure process

Abstract

A developed process model including the effects of chemical and thermal strains and the cure related elastic material behavior is established in order to simulate the cure process before cooling stage more realistically. A three-dimensional finite element method is used to analyze the effect of the curing related parameters on residual stresses in the cure progress of polymer composites. The obtained results show that the density, the specific heat, the thermal conductivity and the anisotropic chemical shrinkage have different influences on the final residual stresses before cooling stage.
