7. An efficiency calculation model for ball screws by accounting for lead errors

Abstract

Transmission efficiency is a pivotal indicator, providing a comprehensive view of the overall performance of a ball screw. While extensive research has predominantly focused on computing transmission efficiency across various operating conditions, the factors influencing the variability have often been overlooked. This study introduces an innovative method for computing transmission efficiency, which considers lead error, drawing on deformation coordination theory and load distribution. Multiple ball screws of varying precision grades underwent rigorous testing to quantify lead errors. Subsequently, each screw was matched with an identical set of nuts to measure the respective transmission efficiencies. Experimental results reveal a linear correlation between lead error and transmission efficiency when both lead error and uneven ball load distribution in ball screws are considered. The relative error between the calculated transmission efficiency results and experimental values for ball screws of different precision grades falls within the range of 0 % to 7.42 %, confirming the validity of the proposed model in this paper.

11. A novel calculation expression for the experimental friction coefficient of the ball screw

Abstract

The friction coefficient inevitably affects the friction force between balls and raceway thus might significantly change the performance of the ball screw. However, the traditional methods for determining friction coefficient are based on different empirical values which may lead to different results. To this end, this paper studies the variation law of the friction coefficient by considering different lubrication states between balls and raceway. An experiment is carried out, through which a Stribeck tribology-based expression of the friction coefficient is proposed. The given results provide two obvious stages of lubrication, and the turning point of the two stages represents the minimum value of the friction coefficient. Moreover, the rotational speed is the main factor that influences the value of the friction coefficient based on the calculation of the average central film thickness.

Abstract

Static stiffness and fiction, as the key load-beating performance indicators of rolling linear guide pairs, affected the motion accuracy and operation performance directly. Based on Hertz contact theory, a model of raceway center distance errors, the fiction forces and static stiffness of the guide rail pairs was established. The theoretical model and controlled variable tests were combined to analyze the influences of the center distance errors for guide rail raceway, sider raceway and ball interference on the bearing performance for the guide rail pairs. The fiction forces and static stiffness under different errors of the raceway center distance were compared and analyzed. The results show that the relative errors of static stiffness are as 2.46% ~ 8.20%, and the relative errors of friction are as 0.42% ~ 11.33%. Abstract

SUMMARY: This paper proposes a set of novel indices for evaluating the kinematic performance of a 3-RRS (R and S denote revolute and spherical joint respectively, R denotes active joint.), parallel mechanism whose translational and rotational movements are strongly coupled. First, the indices are formulated using the decoupled overall Jacobian matrix, which is developed using coordinate transformation. Then, the influences of the homogeneous dimensionless parameters on these indices are investigated. In addition, the dimension synthesis of the 3-RRS parallel mechanism is carried out by minimizing the mean value of the kinematic performance indices and their standard deviation. 23. Evolution of Lubrication Characteristics of Double-Nut Ball Screws Based on an Efficient Surface Roughness Modeling Method

Abstract

Accurate prediction of lubrication characteristics, specifically film thickness and pressure distribution, is pivotal for ensuring optimal performance in ball screws. Despite its significance, there is a notable dearth of studies investigating the evolution of lubrication characteristics resulting from the changing surface roughness over prolonged operation of ball screws. Furthermore, obtaining the surface roughness of ball screws poses a challenge due to the limited loading capacity of measurement instruments. Traditional methods involving cutting the screw for surface roughness measurement are impractical for continuous monitoring during extended operation. To address this issue, the present study introduces an efficient approach to model the surface roughness of the raceway in double-nut ball screws. A profilometer is employed to measure profile roughness along two directions (parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction) without the need to cut the screw raceway. The 2D power spectral densities and height probability densities of profile roughness are calculated to model the surface roughness, and the synthesized data are utilized to solve the Reynolds equation. The simulation method is validated through friction torque tests, demonstrating a calculation accuracy exceeding 92%. The study further explores the evolution of film thickness and pressure distribution in double-nut ball screws during running-in and steady wear stages, revealing severe asperity contact in the two nuts. Additionally, variations in load ratio, friction coefficient, and film thickness ratio (λ) are investigated. Considering the load ratio and λ of the slave nut, it can be inferred that boundary lubrication persists in the two nuts throughout the operation.
