1. A Cross-Lingual Statutory Article Retrieval Dataset for Taiwan Legal Studies

Abstract

This paper introduces a cross-lingual statutory article retrieval (SAR) dataset designed to enhance legal information retrieval in multilingual settings. Our dataset features spoken-language-style legal inquiries in English, paired with corresponding Chinese versions and relevant statutes, covering all Taiwanese civil, criminal, and administrative laws. This dataset aims to improve access to legal information for non-native speakers, particularly for foreign nationals in Taiwan. We propose several LLM-based methods as baselines for evaluating retrieval effectiveness, focusing on mitigating translation errors and improving cross-lingual retrieval performance. Our work provides a valuable resource for developing inclusive legal information retrieval systems.

2. Forward and backward problems for coupled subdiffusion systems

Abstract

In this article, we investigate both forward and backward problems for coupled systems of time-fractional diffusion equations, encompassing scenarios of strong coupling. For the forward problem, we establish the well-posedness of the system, leveraging the eigensystem of the corresponding elliptic system as the foundation. When considering the backward problem, specifically the determination of initial values through final time observations, we demonstrate a Lipschitz stability estimate, which is consist with the stability observed in the case of a single equation. To numerically address this backward problem, we refer to the explicit formulation of Tikhonov regularization to devise a multi-channel neural network architecture. This innovative architecture offers a versatile approach, exhibiting its efficacy in multidimensional settings through numerical examples and its robustness in handling initial values that have not been trained., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

3. Global and local existence of solutions for nonlinear systems of time-fractional diffusion equations

Abstract

In this paper, we consider initial-boundary value problems for two-component nonlinear systems of time-fractional diffusion equations with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition and non-negative initial values. The main results are the existence of solutions global in time and the blow-up. Our approach involves the truncation of the nonlinear terms, which enables us to handle all local Lipschitz continuous nonlinear terms, provided their sum is less than or equal to zero. 8. Fractional weak adversarial networks for the stationary fractional advection dispersion equations

Abstract

In this article, we propose the fractional weak adversarial networks (f-WANs) for the stationary fractional advection dispersion equations (FADE) based on their weak formulas. This enables us to handle less regular solutions for the fractional equations. To handle the non-local property of the fractional derivatives, convolutional layers and special loss functions are introduced in this neural network. Numerical experiments for both smooth and less regular solutions show the validity of f-WANs.

Abstract

This paper highlights the effects brought about by the implementation of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) subject in the Zambian primary education curriculum, in Chawama’s, Twatasha and Chimwemwe public primary schools in Lusaka district. This paper used qualitative research design. The three public primary schools of Chawama township in Lusaka district were targeted and were mainly the focus of this study. Both convenience and non-probability sampling techniques were employed. Three research instruments were used in collecting data, namely: semi- structured interviews, focus group interviews, observations and document digging. Data was transcribed, summarized, categorized and interpreted accordingly. Our paper will contribute to the literature within this subject area and will help future researchers to gain insight of the on goings of these issues.

35. Induction of arachidonate 12-1ipoxygenase (Alox 15) in intestine of iron-deficient rats correlates with the production of biologically active lipid mediators

Abstract

To identify novel genes associated with iron metabolism, we performed gene chip studies in two models of iron deficiency: iron-deprived rats and rats deficient in the principal intestinal iron transporter, divalent metal transporter 1 (i.e., Belgrade rats). Affymetrix rat genome gene chips were utilized (RAE230) with cRNA samples derived from duodenum and jejunum of experimental and control animals. Computational analysis and statistical data reduction identified 29 candidate genes, which were induced in both models of iron deficiency. Gene ontology analysis showed enrichment for genes related to lipid homeostasis, and one gene related to this physiological process, a leukocyte type, arachidonate 12-1ipoxygenase (Alox15), was selected for further examination. TaqMan real-time PCR studies demonstrated strong induction of Alox15 throughout the small and large intestine, and in the liver of iron-deficient rats. Polyclonal antibodies were developed and utilized to demonstrate that proteins levels are significantly increased in the intestinal epithelium of iron-deprived rats. HPLC analysis revealed altered intestinal lipid metabolism indicative of Alox15 activity, which resulted in the production of biologically active lipid molecules (12-HETE, 13-HODE, and 13-HOTE). The overall effect is a perturbation of intestinal lipid homeostasis, which results in the production of lipids essentially absent in the intestine of control rats. We have thus provided mechanistic insight into the alteration in lipid metabolism that occurs during iron deficiency, in that induction of Alox15 mRNA expression may be the primary event. 44. Structure and function of the salachian egg case

Abstract

The egg capsules of a selachian fish have complex collagenous structures, the walls of which are laminated at three hierarchical levels and helically twisted at five to six levels. Both the egg capsules and the tendrils are generated as continuous extrusions from spinnerets within the gland. The highly permeable capsule wall allows the passage of small ions and small molecular weight polar solutes. The low density capsule wall is chemically stable and resistant to enzymatic degradation.

47. Characterization and Phylogenetic Analysis of the Complete Mitochondrial Genomes of Two Tiny Necrophagous Phorid Flies, Metopina sagittataand Puliciphora borinquenensis(Diptera: Phoridae)

Abstract

The mitochondrial genome is frequently used for species identification and phylogenetic studies. In this study, we first sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genomes of two phorid species that are forensically important in buried or enclosed environments: Metopina sagittata(Liu) and Puliciphora borinquenensis(Wheeler). The complete mitochondrial genome sequences of M. sagittataand P. borinquenensiswere 15,640 bp with an A+T content of 75.97% and 15,429 bp with an A+T content of 75.38%, respectively. Their circular genomes both contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 1 control region located between rrnSand trnIwhich was 808 bp for M. sagittataand 746 bp for P. borinquenensis. All the PCGs of both species started with ATN codons except for cox1which used TTG codon. In addition to the common stop codon TAA and TAG, the incomplete stop codon T was used in two PCGs (cox1and nad4) of M. sagittataand five PCGs (cox1, cox2, cox3, nad5, and nad4) of P. borinquenensis. There were 3 and 10 mismatched base pairs in the tRNA secondary structures from M. sagittataand P. borinquenensis, respectively. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses indicated that Platypezidae and Phoridae are sister taxa. M. sagittatais closely related to P. borinquenensiswithin the subfamily Metopininae. This work enhances the databases of Phoridae genomes and contributes to the further study of species identification and phylogenetics of this family.
