Grandparents and other relatives increasingly assume the role of primary caregiver to minor children. This study interviewed family members caring for children whose parents were not available due to parental incarceration, other involvement in the criminal justice system, and substance abuse-related issues. Interviews with 25 African American women examined the impact of caregiving including stress and depression. Stress included caregiver issues related to finances, time allocation, care responsibilities, and concerns about the absent parent, as well as issues specific to the children related to school concerns, child behavior, and emotional problems. These stresses were examined along with caregiver depression scores using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, which indicated more depression related to caregiver illnesses, older caregivers, and care for older and a larger number of children. This study suggests that caring for these children is both challenging and stressful, and caregivers are at risk for depression and other mental health concerns. Health and service providers should carefully assess the needs of caregivers when determining the needs of families where children are under care of nonparental relatives. This study investigated the impact of the 9/11 attacks on substance use in Chicago, Illinois. The study design was a cross-sectional, audio-computer-assisted self-interview survey conducted in 2001 and 2002. Biological samples were also collected for toxicological analyses. Using a multistage area probability design, residents between the ages of 18 and 40 years were randomly selected. Compared to pre-9/11 interviewees, post-9/11 interviewees showed significantly less self-reported marijuana use, marijuana use per test results, and cocaine use per test results. AIMS: To examine whether neighborhood racial characteristics are associated with the under reporting of life time cocaine/crack use. DESIGN: A household survey of high-risk communities with above-average admissions to state-supported drug and alcohol treatment programs. SETTING: Chicago, Illinois, USA. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 303 adults. MEASURES: Self-reported use of cocaine/crack during a respondent's life time, hair test assays for cocaine use and level of neighborhood diversity measured using the Simpson Index. FINDINGS: Respondents from more segregated neighborhoods were more likely than those from diverse neighborhoods to under report life time cocaine/crack use. AIMS: To better understand the prevalence, correlates, risk factors and context of club drug use among US adults in the City of Chicago. DESIGN: An Audio Computer-Assisted Self Interview was administered to a household probability sample of adults, aged 18-40 years, from June 2001 to January 2002. SETTING: Subjects were drawn from randomly selected households using a multi-stage area probability design. PARTICIPANTS: The data represent 627 randomly selected adult participants. MEASUREMENT: Weighted prevalence estimates with design-effect adjusted confidence intervals of life-time, past 12 month and past 30 day use of any club drug and of specific club drugs; prevalence of rave attendance, other drug use, motivation for use among club drug users; chi2 tests of significance, logistic regression and adjusted odds ratios. FINDINGS: Overall club drug prevalence rates were nearly twice those obtained for MDMA alone. Club drug users were more likely to use multiple illicit substances and to report having been in treatment for substance use. A majority of life-time club drug users never attended a rave although rave attendees were more likely to report frequent use of MDMA. Use was associated with gender, race and sexual orientation. CONCLUSIONS: Prevention research should be informed by further population-based research on club drug use. Research should not focus exclusively on rave attendees, as they are only a subset of club drug users. Research is needed on neurological and behavioral sequelae across different types of club drugs, gender differences in the impact of sexual orientation on club drug risk and on the effects of personality characteristics such as sensation seeking on club drug use behavior. We analyzed recanting of substance use reports for lifetime use of alcohol, alcohol to get drunk, cigarettes, marijuana and cocaine in an 8-wave panel study designed to evaluate the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in the State of Illinois. Although this phenomenon has been identified elsewhere, the current analysis of recanting is a unique attempt to track this behavior over the entire course of adolescence. Overall, rates of recanting for specific drugs were extremely high, ranging from 45% for lifetime reports of alcohol use to 81% for lifetime reports of cocaine. Most recanting occurred in the wave immediately following the wave of first disclosure. Paralleling results from other studies, race/ethnicity was an important correlate of recanting in both bivariate and multivariate analyses. African American respondents had higher rates of recanting than White subjects. Even after controlling for the number of follow-up waves, the later the wave of first disclosed lifetime drug use, the lower the probability that drug use would be recanted ever (for all substances) or in the wave immediately following first disclosure (for reports of ever having been drunk or for lifetime marijuana or cocaine use). Alternative causes for this phenomenon are discussed. Implications for the design and interpretation of multiwave school-based panel surveys targeted toward adolescents are also addressed. BackgroundLittle is known about nurses' knowledge and practice of an injury control strategy (means restriction) with parents of adolescents at risk for suicide who are cared for in the emergency department.ObjectivesThis study examined the experiences of emergency nurses (N = 527) with suicidal adolescents; their training, knowledge, practice, and attitudes toward means restriction; and unit practice related to the delivery of means restriction education to parents by emergency nurses.DesignA survey was mailed to all members of the Illinois Chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association.ResultsAlthough the majority (80%, n = 407) of respondents had recent experience with suicidal adolescents, only 24% (n = 122) had ever received means restriction training, 28% (n = 136) provided means restriction education to parents, and 18% (n = 89) worked in units where means restriction is standard practice.ConclusionsThe findings of this study are consistent with injury control literature. The authors recommend training emergency department staff in means restriction, adopting a means restriction protocol for adolescents at risk for suicide, and conducting outcome studies to determine the effectiveness of training and practice. Data were analyzed from two years (1993 and 1995) of a statewide survey of high school students on drug use. Changes in the rates of inhalant use, and associations between inhalant use and sociodemographic variables, were examined across the two survey years. Measures of inhalant use included lifetime use, past year use, and past month use. Analyses showed no significant difference in the rates of inhalant use across years. Associations with sex, ethnicity, and age were partly consistent with previous research findings. Both lifetime and recent inhalant use were more prevalent among males than females. Blacks were less likely to use inhalants (lifetime and recent) than other racial/ethnic groups in both survey years. Native Americans showed elevated rates of recent inhalant use in 1993, but not in 1995. While age trends in the 1993 survey were consistent with expectations, age trends in the 1995 survey were not. Recent inhalant use was constant across age groups in the 1995 sample. Also contrary to expectations, inhalant use was not more prevalent in low-income or high-poverty areas. The associations of inhalant use with family intactness and academic performance varied by race/ethnicity. Family intactness was a significant protective factor only for whites and Hispanics. Poor grades were not a significant predictor of lifetime inhalant use for blacks, and the protective effect of high grades was found only for whites. To better understand and control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among high-risk youth, we must first acquire reliable reports of sexual risk behavior. This study evaluates one potential method for validating such reports. We examined the association between marijuana and cocaine use reporting patterns and the number of reported recent sexual partners in a sample of juvenile arrestees/detainees. Using urinalysis to validate self-reported drug use, we categorized drug use reporting patterns into four groups: overreporters, underreporters, honest users, and honest nonusers. Analyses showed, in general, that overreporters reported more sexual partners than either underreporters or accurate reporters, suggesting that overreporters of drug use may also exaggerate sex partner reports. Findings suggest a new method for validating self-reported sexual behavior and provide a challenge to theories of juvenile delinquency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growth of N,N′-dimethylperylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (DiMe-PTCDI) on KBr(001) has been studied by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy. At low coverages, DiMe-PTCDI forms molecular wires with a length of up to 600 nm; at higher coverages, wire networks were found. The height of the wires is two or more molecular layers; if the sample is cooled to 250 K during evaporation, also wires of one layer are found. All wires grow along the [110] and [110] directions of the KBr(001) substrate. There is no wetting layer of molecules. Atomic resolution of the substrate could be achieved between the wires. Due to their size and shape, the molecular nanowires might act as a model system for organic electronics research on insulating substrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a sustainable method employing concentrated sunlight to achieve environmental remediation of wastewater, contaminated by Ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP), is thoroughly investigated. A green ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite (NC) is used as a photocatalyst coating on glass to investigate the inactivation of CIP in water, in a flow-reactor configuration at small-prototype scale (10 liters/h, catalyst area 187.5 cm 2 ). ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 NC coatings were obtained by an in-situ thermal condensation process coupled with a green synthesis protocol and deposited on glass, via a simple drop casting method. Morphological and structural analyses of synthesized composites were performed with Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, while optical properties were studied with Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS). The degradation of CIP was first tested at a lab scale under simulated sunlight and then studied under sunlight in a parabolic trough concentrator (PTC). Suitable degradation of CIP (100%) was observed at 210 min via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the by-products were determined by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS). Microbiological tests revealed the absence of antibacterial activity in CIP water treated with ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 NC photocatalyst against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Priestia megaterium. Our results directly demonstrate the effective inactivation of CIP with a process designed for sustainability both in terms of energy input (solar) and scalability of materials. Background: Adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been well-documented, but only a few studies have characterized distinct trajectories of anxiety over time. Further, whether specific emotion regulation and coping efforts to manage pandemic distress predict these distinct trajectories remains unexamined., Aims: The study characterized anxiety trajectories across the first year of the pandemic and identified emotion regulation and coping strategies that predict these classes of anxiety trajectories. A national sample of 1108 U.S. adults completed online surveys six times in the first year of the pandemic. Five emotion regulation and coping strategies were assessed (substance use, active, behavioral disengagement, positive reappraisal, and catastrophizing). Latent Growth Mixture Modeling (LGGM) analyses were performed to identify anxiety trajectory classes., Results: LGMM revealed five latent classes: Resilience (consistently very low anxiety; 79.9%), Moderate Anxiety (8.8%), Chronic High Anxiety (4.6%), Improving-Worsening Anxiety (3.2%), and Worsening-Improving Anxiety (3.5%). Using substances, disengagement, and catastrophizing to deal with COVID-19 stress consistently predicted trajectories higher in anxiety as did active coping, while positive reappraisal was unrelated to trajectory class membership., Conclusions: These results identify emotion regulation and coping strategies that appeared to exacerbate anxiety during the course of the pandemic.

The COVID-19 Stressors Scale measures individuals' appraisals of stressors related to the pandemic. Measurement of perceptions of stressors is necessary to understand the socioemotional impacts of not only the COVID-19 pandemic, but other disasters. The study examined the factor structure of the scale among adults in the U.S. over six time points. A shortened version was used, and the fit was examined over time. The results of the study show contextual appraisals change over time and offer important implications for the measurement of stressfulness of disasters, a critical step in designing and assessing impacts of social programs aimed to reduce the deleterious effects of disasters., (© 2024. Objectives: Since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, additional risk factors affecting family caregivers' mental health have arisen. Therefore, personal stress coping strategies and family dynamics became important factors in reducing the impact of the pandemic on family caregivers' mental health. The present research aimed to estimate the association between COVID-19 stressors and family caregiving burden. Moreover, moderating effects of emotion dysregulation and family functioning on this association were investigated., Methods: This study analyzed data collected in April 2021 from 154 family caregivers ( M age  = 38.79, SD age  = 9.36, range = 22-64) recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk). The impact of COVID-19 stressors on family caregiving burden was tested, and moderating impacts of emotion dysregulation and family functioning were also investigated., Results: Both COVID-19 stress exposure and stress appraisal were positively associated with family caregiving burden. Emotion dysregulation and problematic family functioning were also positively associated with family caregiving burden. A significant moderating effect of emotion dysregulation was found, such that family caregivers with higher emotion dysregulation were likely to feel more caregiving burden when they experienced more COVID-19 stressors., Significance of Results: The current research highlighted the role of emotion regulation in reducing the negative impact of COVID-19 stressors on family caregiving burden. The research also emphasizes the need for intervention programs to improve emotion regulation strategies to decrease family caregiving burden during the pandemic.

Stress exposure often leads to poor mental health, but whether certain types of stressors predict differential levels of mental health symptoms and whether coping differentially moderates these associations remain untested. This study examined whether COVID-19 stressor types (financial-, activity-, and infection-related) differentially predicted subsequent mental health (general distress, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and positive states of mind) and whether different types of coping moderated these relationships. In April, 2020, questionnaires assessing the impact of COVID-19 on daily life were administered to an adult sample across the US ( N = 1,546); 861 (55.7%) of whom completed questionnaires one month later. Nearly all stressor types independently predicted each aspect of mental health. Behavioral disengagement moderated links between both activity- and infection-related stressors and mental health. Seeking emotional social support moderated links between infection-related stressors and both general distress and positive states of mind as well as activity-related stressors and general distress. Positive reappraisal moderated links between financial-related stressors and positive states of mind. Acceptance coping predicted better mental health but was not a significant moderator. Stressor types and coping strategies are important determinants of effects of COVID-19 on mental health; our findings suggest possible screening and intervention implications and directions for future research., Competing Interests: Disclosure Statement: The authors report that there are no competing interests to declare.

Introduction: social isolation and forced quarantines during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with a steep and persistent rise in alcohol consumption among US adults. While the association between loneliness and drinking is well established, less is known about the impact of social isolation (a known correlate of loneliness) and the interplay between these two variables in relation to drinking., Methods: we recruited US adults using the MTurk platform for an online survey in early April 2020. The initial survey was followed up with a second wave, 30 days later in mid to late May. Data from the current analyses focus on this second wave of data collection., Results: we found significant direct effects on heavy drinking for both social isolation (c' = 0.495; P < .01) and loneliness (b = 0.071; P < .05). We also found a significant indirect path from social isolation to heavy drinking through social isolation's impact on elevating loneliness (a = 0.919; P < .001). The indirect effect of social isolation on the composite measure of heavy drinking was 0.0652 (0.919 × 0.071) and was significant at the 0.05 level after bootstrapping estimates of the variance were constructed., Conclusions: those most isolated early in the pandemic were at increased risk for heavy drinking, in part because their social isolation led to increased loneliness. Post-pandemic research is needed to explore whether the relationships that stemmed from social isolation during the pandemic led to a persistent pattern of behavioral risk that maintained high rates of heavy drinking., (© The Author(s) 2024. Introduction: For adults involved with the criminal justice system who are reentering their communities post-incarceration, there is a large need for community-based substance use treatment. Little is known, however, about the types, availability, and benefits of programs targeting the reentry population in community settings that operate independently from the criminal justice system., Methods: We conducted a scoping review of community-based treatment programs for substance use among reentering justice-involved adults to examine the contemporary state of literature and identify research gaps. We searched four databases for peer-reviewed articles conducted in the United States and published between 2017 and 2021., Results: The final sample included 58 articles. Interventions varied, but the two most prominent were medications for opioid use disorder (35%) and peer support or social support interventions (22.4%). Studies were more likely to show positive impact on substance use outcomes than criminal justice outcomes. Themes were identified around participant characteristics, treatment delivery, and treatment benefits., Conclusions: Findings from this scoping review suggest that the range of evidence-based strategies for substance use treatment targeting the reentry population is growing, but there is a need for additional research that examines implementation, cost effectiveness, and racial/ethnic disparities., Competing Interests: The authors report there are no competing interests to declare concerning this work., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

Background and Objectives: People commonly report positive changes following stressful experiences (perceived posttraumatic growth; PPTG), yet whether PPTG validly reflects positive changes remains unestablished., Design and Methods: We tested the extent to which COVID-19 pandemic-related PPTG relates to positive changes in corresponding psychosocial resources in a national US sample participating in a five wave study (T1-T5), focusing here on T2-T5: n s = 712-860. We examined correlations between resource change (both latent and observed difference scores) and PPTG at each occasion and conducted structural equation models to separate occasion-specific and stable (traitlike) PPTG variance. We related changes in resources to occasion-specific and stable PPTG components., Results: Associations between change scores and occasion-specific PPTG were sparse, providing limited evidence of PPTG validity. Associations between change scores and stable PPTG tended to be positive and stronger than associations for occasion-specific PPTG., Discussion: Perceptions of growth were largely unrelated to experienced positive changes and thus appear to be largely illusory. However, a personality-like tendency to believe one grows from stressful experiences relates more strongly to actual resource growth. These results suggest that people are not accurate reporters of positive changes they experience and that interventions aimed at promoting post-traumatic growth may be premature.

Social media use increased early in the Covid-19 pandemic, but little information is available about its impact. The present study examined associations of frequency of use of different social media and the motives for use with subsequent social well-being and mental health. Data were gathered on a nationwide sample of 843 Americans during the first wave of lockdowns and infections in mid-April 2020, and again five weeks later. Participants were adults ages 20 to 88 years old ( M  = 39.3 years old) recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Controlling for age and gender, greater frequency of Facebook and video chat app use predicted higher levels social support but also higher levels of cumulative Covid-19-related stress appraisals and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Greater use of video chat apps also predicted less loneliness. Greater use of both Instagram and Snapchat predicted more anxiety and cumulative Covid-19-related stress appraisals. Greater use of Instagram also predicted higher levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Motives for use (e.g., connect with others, waste time/avoid responsibility, online video gaming with others) also differentially predicted social well-being and mental health. Results indicate that greater social media use early in the pandemic was often associated with more distress and lower levels of social well-being but, effects varied depending on types, frequency, and motivations for use. Overall, the study revealed that social media use related to social well-being and mental health in complex ways.
