Abstract

The European Union funded project MICEV aims at improving the traceability of electrical and magnetic measurement at charging stations and to better assess the safety of this technology with respect to human exposure. The paper describes some limits of the instrumentation used for electrical measurements in the charging stations, and briefly presents two new calibration facilities for magnetic field meters and electric power meters. Modeling approaches for the efficiency and human exposure assessment are proposed. In the latter case, electromagnetic computational codes have been combined with dosimetric computational codes making use of highly detailed human anatomical phantoms in order to establish human exposure modeling real charging stations. Detailed results are presented for light vehicles where, according to our calculations, the concern towards human exposure is limited. Abstract

Distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT) is one of the most promising solutions to overcome the drawbacks associated with mismatching phenomena in photovoltaic (PV) applications. DMPPT is based on the adoption of a dc/dc converter dedicated to each PV module. The design of the power stage of such a converter is a challenging task because of the very high efficiency requirements and of the continuous changes of the operating point during the day, depending on the sun irradiation conditions. Abstract

The perturb and observe (P&O) best operation conditions are investigated in order to identify the edge efficiency performances of this most popular maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique for photovoltaic (PV) applications. It is shown that P&O may guarantee top-level efficiency, provided that a proper predictive (by means of a parabolic interpolation of the last three operating points) and adaptive (based on the measure of the actual power) hill climbing strategy is adopted. The approach proposed is aimed at realizing, in addition to absolute best tracking performances, high robustness and promptness both in sunny and cloudy weather conditions. The power gain with respect to standard P&O technique is proved by means of simulation results and experimental measurements performed on a low power system. Besides the performance improvements, it is shown that the proposed approach allows possible reduction of hardware costs of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters used in the MPPT control circuitry.

Abstract

The use of one-cycle control (OCC) for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and power factor correction (PFC) in grid connected photovoltaic (PV) applications is discussed. Circuit and operating parameters of the one cycle-based controller of a cost-effective single-stage inverter are optimized in order to obtain the best performances of the system under different irradiance levels. Firstly, design constraints are formulated which allow to get a very efficient OCC operation in terms of power extracted from the PV array, stability, and PFC. Afterwards, such constraints are used to perform the parametric optimization of the one cycle controller by means of suitable heuristic approaches. Various selection criteria of the best parameters set under different conditions are discussed and applied. Finally, a customized perturb and observe (P&O) control is applied to the optimized one cycle controlled single-stage inverter in order to perform a real MPPT in presence of varying irradiance conditions. Abstract

This paper illustrates a general method to formulate the equations for the analysis of commutations and of the effects caused by large step-wise perturbations, large change of parameters, and circuit failures in switching converters including transformers, feedback circuitry, and soft-switching cells. The matrix equations obtained by means of the modified nodal analysis--based method proposed in this work are useful for theoretical inspection of switching converters as well as for numerical simulations. The examples of applications concern the analysis and the synthesis of switching converters and show that the Compensation Theorem (CT)--based model may help in selecting circuit topologies valid for the circuit design.

Abstract

The analysis of synchronous commutations in switching converters is discussed. A reduced resistive circuit for the analysis of synchronous commutations is introduced by applying the Compensation Theorem. Based on a matrix model, a new method for the analysis of both hard and soft synchronous commutations is formulated, which permits a straightforward understanding operation of switching converters. The method of analysis is presented herein in its basic version, for the analysis of nonisolated hard-switching converters, while the general formulation and its applications to the analysis and synthesis of dc-dc regulators is presented in the companion paper Part II.

Abstract

In double-stage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters, the dynamic interactions among the dc/dc and dc/ac stages and the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller may reduce the system performances. In this paper, the detrimental effects, particularly in terms of system efficiency and MPPT performances, of the oscillations of the PV array voltage, taking place at the second harmonic of the grid frequency are evidenced. The use of a proper compensation network acting on the error signal between a reference signal provided by theMPPT controller and a signal that is proportional to the PV array voltage is proposed. The guidelines for the proper joint design of the compensation network (which is able to cancel out the PV voltage oscillations) and of the main MPPT parameters are provided in this paper. Simulation results and experimental measurements confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a layered software architecture for Circuit-CAD (CCAD) with uncertainties handling capabilities, based on the utilization of heterogeneous software agents. The need of such approach comes from the increasing requests for integration-cooperation features in modern CCAD applications, whose simulation tasks are asked to go far beyond the mere and rigid application of presumed general purpose numerical methods. Indeed, solving some hard problems, like Tolerance and Sensitivity Analysis (TSA) for strongly non linear circuits in presence of large parameters' uncertainties, benefits much more from a clever preliminary choice of the best problem-tuned numerical method rather than from a blind number crunching approach. The software architecture we propose in this paper is built by intermediate and low level agents: Dbots (Domain Software Robots), operating at decision level, and Wbots (Working Software Robots), operating at computation level. We define the nature of such agents and describe their de-coupled manner of interaction, which enables implementing dynamic adaptive resolution schemes for given CCAD tasks. Furthermore, we present an example of use of the proposed architecture utilizing Java to specify agents as active objects. Abstract

Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) generate distorted nonsinusoidal current waveforms flowing into conductors (wires, striplines, windings), which cause ohmic losses mainly ruled by the skin-effect. Skin effect is traditionally studied in the frequency domain; most studies on the effects of distorted SMPS current waveform are devoted to examine the so-called high-frequency effects, namely the behavior of components and systems at the switching frequency and its harmonics, considering a virtual sinusoidal steady-state operation at each frequency of the range under study. In this paper skin-effect has been studied in the time-domain by means of a formulation based on a magnetic vector potential A and on a scalar potential p. The obtained results show that the equivalent per-unit length resistance of conductors carrying typical SMPS nonsinusoidal current waveforms depend both on switching frequency and duty-cycle and is rather different from DC and AC sinusoidal equivalent resistances.
