Abstract

This paper describes the experience of the first author with the Point-and-Click Interface of the OnScreenDualScribe, created by the last author. The new interface is an innovative extension to the previous interface which required the use of the DualPad. The main differences between the two interfaces are highlighted. The user took several writing tests with the Point-and Click Interface and compares her results with two of interfaces she uses the most for writing, Dragon NaturallySpeaking and SofType. Abstract

This paper describes the experiences of the first author, who has been diagnosed with the neuromuscular disease Friedreich's Ataxia more than 25 years ago, with the innovative approach to human-computer interaction characterized by the software tool OnScreenDualScribe. Originally developed by (and for!) the first author, the tool replaces the standard input devices — i.e., keyboard and mouse — with a small numerical keypad, making optimal use of his abilities. The paper attempts to illustrate some of the difficulties the first author usually has to face when operating a computer, due to considerable motor problems. It will be shown what he tried in the past, and why OnScreenDualScribe, offering various assistive techniques — including word prediction, an ambiguous keyboard, and stepwise pointing operations — is indeed a viable alternative. The ultimate goal is to help not only one single person, but to make the system — which does not accelerate entry very much, but clearly reduces the required effort — available to anyone with similar conditions. Abstract

The design and evaluation of a scanning ambiguous keyboard (SAK) is presented. SAK combines themost demanding requirement of a scanning keyboard-input using one key or switch-with the most appealing feature of an ambiguous keyboard-one key press per letter. The optimal design requires just 1.713 scan steps per character for English text entry. In a provisional evaluation, 12 able-bodied participants each entered 5 blocks of text with the scanning interval decreasing from 1100 ms initially to 700 ms at the end. The average text entry rate in the 5th block was 5.11 wpm with 99% accuracy. One participant performed an additional five blocks of trials and reached an average speed of 9.28 wpm on the 10th block. Afterwards, the usefulness of the approach for persons with severe physical disabilities was shown in a case study with a software implementation of the idea explicitly adapted for that target community. Abstract

This paper deals with various ways of controlling an electrically powered wheelchair beyond the usual method involving a manual joystick. The main focus is on the newest version of HaWCoS – the "HAnds-free Wheelchair COntrol System" – allowing persons with severe disabilities to reliably navigate a power wheelchair without the need to use the hands. All the user has to do is to produce a sequence of tiny contractions of an arbitrary muscle, e.g., by raising the eyebrow. The working prototype of the system, which has been realized as a stand-alone device, is introduced in detail, together with a closer look at the muscle-based control principle and a brief description of a PC-based simulator. The advantages and the drawbacks of the system are discussed on the basis of a rather simple real-life experiment. The paper also elaborates on possible approaches to improve HaWCoS (by reducing or eliminating its problems) in the future. In addition to a quick software solution and a controller implementation involving supplemental sensory information, planned "improvements" include the development of an "intelligent wheelchair" with HaWCoS being some sort of a prototype for the User Interface component. Abstract

This paper introduces a neural network architecture for classifying feature vectors symbolizing portions (or segments) of an electroencephalogram (EEG) trace of a human subject. This classification task is the one that is typically required when developing a so-called brain—computer interface (BCI), which analyzes the EEG signals of a subject in order to "understand" the subject's thoughts. However, instead of merely saying which "category of thoughts" (i.e., which class) the respective input feature vector belongs to, the network described here estimates the probabilities of an EEG segment being associated with each individual class. The network, which is called PeGNC (for probability estimating guarded neural classifier), is tested with two kinds of experiments. In the first experiment, the α-rhythm associated with a human subject closing the eyes is detected online with the help of a frequency-based representation. Since the EEG signal is, in general, always a mixture of numerous action potentials generated simultaneously and it is, thus, very likely that mental activities result in overlapping classes, it is reasonable to believe that the PeGNC network--which does not select any one single class, but determines probability values for each mental category—is particularly suitable for this kind of EEG analysis. The second experiment deals with this issue on the basis of an offline analysis of simulated data.
