As tecnologias de reprodução artificial, como a produção de oócitos e embriões, desempenham um papel importante na disseminação de material genético superior, contribuindo de forma efetiva para acelerar o ganho genético de características de interesse comercial no sistema de produção e no desenvolvimento da cadeia produtiva de carne e leite. Frente a isso, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar diferentes metodologias na avaliação genética da produção de embriões e oócitos em bovinos Gir Leiteiro e identificar as estratégias mais adequadas para futuras avaliações genéticas da raça. No primeiro capítulo, apresentamos a revisão de literatura sobre os temas que estão diretamente relacionamentos aos objetivos do nosso projeto. No segundo capítulo, utilizamos modelos de repetibilidade e regressão aleatória (RRM) para estimar parâmetros genéticos e predizer valores genéticos para a produção de oócitos e embriões, e identificamos os modelos que resultaram em maiores ganhos genéticos na produção de oócitos e embriões. No terceiro capítulo, investigamos o impacto do estresse térmico nos parâmetros genéticos e valores genéticos para produção de oócitos e embriões em animais da raça Gir Leiteiro. E, no quarto capítulo, avaliamos a eficiência dos modelos com distribuição Gaussiana (variável não transformada — LIN; transformada por logaritmo — LOG; transformada pelas distribuições de Anscombe — ANS) e Poisson (POI) na avaliação genética para a produção de oócitos e embriões. A herdabilidade estimada pelo RRM foi superior à estimada pelo modelo de repetibilidade, e o ganho genético foi maior, com acréscimos variando entre 0,02 (13,33%) e 0,26 (152,94%) ao utilizar o RRM. Observamos uma reordenação na classificação dos valores genéticos preditos dos 5% melhores touros e fêmeas ao longo da idade da doadora no momento da coleta de óocitos. É recomendável considerar o efeito do estresse térmico por meio dos índices de temperatura e umidade nas avaliações genéticas da raça para produção de oócitos e embriões e, assim, é possível selecionar animais tolerantes ao estresse térmico em características relacionadas à reprodução artificial. Também observamos o reordenamento dos melhores animais em relação às escalas de idades para coleta de oócitos e do índice de temperatura e umidade. Dessa forma, esses fatores devem ser levados em consideração no momento de identificar e selecionar os candidatos à reprodução. Ainda, identificamos que o modelo POI ajustou-se melhor aos dados e resultou em maior acurácia dos valores genéticos quando comparado aos demais modelos com distribuição de probabilidade Gaussiana (LIN, LOG e ANS). Os resultados obtidos nesta tese suportam a conclusão de que é possível obter progresso genético para a produção de oócitos e embriões por meio de seleção. Isso pode contribuir para o crescimento econômico de fazendas e demais empresas envolvidas na comercialização de embriões. Além disso, a rápida disseminação de material genético superior, proporcionada pelas técnicas reprodutivas via grande número de progênies de fêmeas com alto valor genético para diferentes características de interesse econômico, favorecem também o desenvolvimento e o retorno financeiro para os sistemas produtivos. Artificial reproduction technologies, such as the production of oocytes and embryos, play an important role in the dissemination of superior genetic material, effectively contributing to accelerate the genetic gain of traits of commercial interest in the production system and in the development of the production chain of meat and milk. In view of this, the objective of this study was to evaluate different methodologies in the genetic evaluation of the production of oocytes and embryos in Dairy Gir cattle and to identify the most appropriate strategies for future genetic evaluations of the breed. In the first chapter, we present a literature review on topics that are directly related to the objectives of our project. In the second chapter, we used repeatability and random regression (RRM) models to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values for oocyte and embryo production, and we identified the models that resulted in the greatest genetic gains in oocyte and embryo production. In the third chapter, we investigated the impact of heat stress on genetic parameters and breeding values for the production of oocytes and embryos in Dairy Gir animals. And, in the fourth chapter, we evaluated the efficiency of models with Gaussian distribution (non-transformed variable — LIN; transformed by logarithm — LOG; transformed by the Anscombe distributions — ANS) and Poisson (POI) in the genetic evaluation for the production of oocytes and embryos. The heritability estimated by the RRM was higher than that estimated by the repeatability model, and the genetic gain was greater, with increases ranging between 0.02 (13.33%) and 0.26 (152.94%) when using the RRM. We observed a reordering in the classification of the predicted breeding values of the top 5% sires and females along the age of the donor at ovum pick-up. It is recommended to consider the effect of heat stress through the temperature-humidity index in the genetic evaluations of the breed for the production of oocytes and embryos and, thus, it is possible to select animals tolerant to heat stress in traits related to artificial reproduction. We also observed the reordering of the best animals in relation to the age scales for age at ovum pick-up and the temperature-humidity index. Thus, these factors must be taken into account when identifying and selecting breeding candidates. Furthermore, we identified that the POI model fitted the data better and resulted in greater accuracy of the breeding values when compared to the other models with Gaussian probability distribution (LIN, LOG and ANS). The results obtained in this thesis support the conclusion that it is possible to obtain genetic progress for the production of oocytes and embryos through selection. This can contribute to the economic growth of farms and other companies involved in the commercialization of embryos. In addition, the rapid dissemination of superior genetic material, provided by reproductive techniques via a large number of progenies of females with high genetic value for different traits of economic interest, also favors the development and financial return for production systems.

The objective of this work was to identify the most suitable model for the genetic evaluation of post-weaning weight gain in a multibreed Angus-Nelore population. Three models were tested using the Bayesian inference method: traditional animal model (M1), multibreed animal model without (M2) and with segregation (M3). The choice of the best model followed the criteria: number of parameters (Np), deviance information criterion (DIC), conditional predictive ordinate (CPO), and deviance based on Bayes factors. Spearman’s rank correlations were estimated for the top 10, 20, and 30% sires. M1 presented the highest values for all criteria, except for Np, and the lowest direct heritability estimate of 0.15±0.01. The heritability estimates for M2 and M3 were higher and similar, being 0.29±0.02 and 0.27±0.02, respectively. M3 showed the lowest values for mean deviance, DIC, and CPO, being the best-fitting model among the three tested. Spearman’s correlation between the predicted genetic values for the models ranged from 0.69 to 0.99. The multibreed models are the most suitable for the genetic evaluation of multibreed populations, and M3 shows the best fit for the studied population. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o modelo mais adequado para avaliação genética do ganho de peso pós-desmama em uma população multirracial de Angus-Nelore. Foram testados três modelos com uso do método de inferência bayesiana: animal tradicional (M1), animal multirracial sem (M2) e com segregação (M3). A escolha do melhor modelo seguiu os critérios: número de parâmetros (Np), critério de desvio de informação (CDI), predição condicional (PCO) e desvio com base nos fatores de Bayes. Foram estimadas as correlações de postos de Spearman para os 10, 20 e 30% melhores touros. M1 apresentou os maiores valores para todos os critérios, exceto para Np, e a menor estimativa de herdabilidade direta, de 0,15±0,01. As estimativas de herdabilidade de M2 e M3 foram maiores e similares, de 0,29±0,02 e 0,27±0,02, respectivamente. M3 apresentou os menores valores para desvio-médio, CDI e PCO, tendo sido o modelo de melhor ajuste entre os três testados. A correlação de Spearman entre os valores genéticos previstos para os modelos variou de 0,69 a 0,99. Os modelos multirraciais são mais adequados para a avaliação genética de populações multirraciais, e o M3 apresenta o melhor ajuste para a população estudada.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of reducing the number of lactation controls on the accuracy of the prediction of the genetic value of the animals. The database provided by the Brazilian Association of Breeders of the Dutch Breed was edited to contain only performance observations collected from cows with 10 monthly controls in lactation and was composed of 111,840 records of monthly production collected between 1991 and 2010 and from this, by random elimination of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 controls, six other files were generated, totaling seven different populations, bringing together cows with 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4 controls in lactation, respectively. Genetic parameters and values were estimated by means of a random regression model with a polynomial of order 4 for genetic and permanent environment effects and homogeneous residual variances. Breeders were grouped according to the number of daughters to verify differences in mean reliability of predicted genetic values and Spearman rank correlation between genetic values of the best 10 and 20% breeding herds was calculated in the different populations to determine if there were changes in the ranking. Populations with number of partial controls had lower genetic variance, and consequently lower heritability for milk production; the mean reliability was lower in populations with lower number of controls; the number of bulls with high reliability was also lower; the Spearman correlations presented mean values, indicating that there are changes in the ranking of the best animals. Therefore, the reduction in the number of lactation controls negatively affects the genetic evaluation of populations. O propósito deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da redução do número de controles por lactação sobre a precisão da predição do valor genético dos animais. O banco de dados, cedido pela Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Holandesa, foi editado para conter somente observações de desempenho coletadas de vacas com 10 controles mensais na lactação e ficou composto por 111.840 registros de produções mensais coletadas entre os anos de 1991 a 2010 e, a partir deste, pela eliminação aleatória de 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 e 6 controles, foram gerados outros seis arquivos, totalizando sete diferentes populações, reunindo vacas com 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 e 4 controles na lactação, respectivamente. Os parâmetros e valores genéticos foram estimados por meio de um modelo de regressão aleatória com polinômio de ordem quatro para efeito genético e de ambiente permanente e variâncias residuais homogêneas. Os reprodutores foram agrupados de acordo com o número de filhas, para verificar diferenças na confiabilidade média dos valores genéticos preditos e a correlação de ranking de Spearman entre os valores genéticos dos 10 e 20% melhores reprodutores foi calculada nas diferentes populações para averiguar se ocorre alterações no ranqueamento. As populações com número de controles parciais apresentaram menor variância genética, e consequentemente isso menor herdabilidade para a produção de leite; a confiabilidade média foi menor nas populações com menor número de controles; o número de touros com alta confiabilidade também foi menor; as correlações de Spearman apresentaram valores médios, indicando que existe alterações no ranqueamento dos melhores animais. Portanto, a redução do número de controles por lactação afeta negativamente a avaliação genética das populações.

Objetivou-se comparar um modelo multi-característica padrão com modelos de análise de fatores (AF) e de componentes principais (CP) para estimar parâmetros genéticos para a produção de leite no dia do controle (PLDC) de vacas da raça Holandesa. O arquivo de trabalho constituiu-se de 4.616 registros mensais de PLDC de primeiras lactações de vacas da raça Holandesa. As PLDC foram agrupadas em dez classes mensais, entre o 5o e 305o dia da lactação (PLDC1 a PLDC10). Foram realizadas análises considerando 11 modelos diferentes, como segue: multi-característica padrão (MC); cinco modelos de posto reduzido, para a matriz de covariância genética, ajustando um a cinco (CP1 ... CP5) componentes principais; e dois modelos utilizando análise de fatores (F1, F2, F3, F4 e F5). Para todos os modelos, foram considerados como aleatórios os efeitos genético aditivo e o residual e como fixos os de grupo de contemporâneos, da idade da vaca ao parto (linear e quadrático) e dias em lactação (linear). Os valores de Log L, AIC e BIC melhoraram com o aumento do número de parâmetros até CP4 e AF4. Comparando CP4 e AF4, observa-se que CP4 resultou em melhores valores de Log L, AIC e BIC. As estimativas de herdabilidade e correlações genéticas utilizando os modelos MC, CP4 e AF4 foram similares, variando de 0,06 (PL6) a 0,65 (PL10) e de 0,05 (PL4xPL10) a 0,94 (PL2xPL3), respectivamente, indicando que a estrutura de covariâncias genéticas entre as produções de leite no dia do controle pode ser ajustada utilizando um modelo de posto reduzido, contendo quatro componentes principais ou quatro fatores The objective was to compare a standard multi-trait (MT) analysis model with factor (FA) and principal components (PC) analyses models to estimated genetic parameters for Holstein cows test day milk production (TD). The data file was composed by 4.616 TD at first lactation registers. The TD was grouped into ten monthly classes of lactation, from the 5th and the 305th day of lactation (TD1 to TD10). Analyses were performed considering 11 different models: standard multi-traits (MT), five reduced rank models to genetic covariance matrix adjusting one (PC1), two (PC2), three (PC3), four (PC4) and five (PD5) principal components and five models using factor analyses (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5). To all the models the effects additive genetic and residual were considered as random and the effects of contemporary group, age of cow at parturition (linear and quadratic) and days in lactation (linear) were considered as fixed. The values of Log L, AIC e BIC improved with the augment of the number of parameters until CP4 and AF4. Comparing CP4 and AF4 is possible to verify that CP4 proportioned better values to Log L, AIC e BIC. The heritabilities and genetic correlations estimated to the ten test day milk production using MC, CP4 and AF4 models were similar ranging from 0.06 (PL6) to 0.65 (PL10) and from 0.05 (PL4xPL10) to 0.94 (PL2xPL3), respectively, indicating that the structure of the genetic covariance between the TD milk productions can be adjusted using a reduced rank model with four principal components or four factors
