Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are considered remnants of the solar system formation, and the study of their physical and dynamical properties gives clues about its origin and evolution [1]. A fraction of this population of small bodies is in the form of Trans-Neptunian Binaries (TNBs), firstly discovered two decades ago [2]. Our interest in them has grown since then, as the study of their mutual orbits can lead to a better understanding of the formation and evolution of the protoplanetary disk. Besides, Trans-Neptunian Binaries offer the opportunity to determine the masses of the bodies with great accuracy, which opens the door to determine their bulk densities. On the other hand, stellar occultations permit us to obtain the sizes and shapes of TNOs with accuracies that can almost reach the precision of the measurements from a spacecraft visit. This technique also enables the detection of secondary features like atmospheres, satellites, or rings [3, 4, 5]. So the study of stellar occultations by TNBs leads to the determination of the size, shape, mass, and bulk density of these bodies with unbeatable accuracy. In this work, we report the first multichord stellar occultation by the TNO (82075) 2000 YW134 and its satellite S/2005 (82075) 1, which took place on 2022 February 23rd over the Gaia EDR3 star 627356458358636544 (mV ~ 17.1 mag). The prediction was based on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory orbit solution JPL#24 [6, 7], which was updated afterward using astrometric data from the 1.5m telescope at Observatorio de Sierra Nevada (OSN, Granada, Spain) and the 1.23m telescope at Calar Alto (CAHA, Almería, Spain). Seventeen observing sites participated in the event, which resulted in seven positive chords (five on the main body and two on the satellite), eight negative chords, and two sites that could not observe due to bad weather or technical issues. We fitted an ellipse to the extremities of the positive chords to derive the projected equivalent diameters of the two bodies. The position of the satellite was closer to the nominal JPL ephemeris than that of the main body. On the other hand, the preliminary derived lower limit for the equivalent projected diameter of the satellite is twice the previously estimated size [8]. The stellar occultation technique is a very powerful tool to obtain the size and shape of Solar System bodies with high accuracy [6]. Size determination allows to obtain geometric albedos and, in the case of binary/multiple objects, even the mass density can be derived [3]. Satellites, atmospheres, and rings can also be detected and characterized [1,2,3]. The observation of stellar occultations produced by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and Centaurs with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers a unique possibility to extend our knowledge of these bodies [4] by providing key information on the body's ability to retain volatiles, surface thermal properties, roughness, porosity, etc.We will present our Target of Opportunity (ToO) program [5] accepted within Heidi Hammel's JWST Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO), dedicated to observing stellar occultations by trans-Neptunian objects (TNO) and distant dwarf planets or particularly interesting centaurs (such as the ringed centaurs Chariklo [1] or Chiron [2]). Predictions of such events visible from JWST are challenging due to the chaotic motion of the space telescope around the Lagrange 2 (L2) point. Statistically, we expect there to be approximately a 50% chance of such an occultation of a star brighter than K=19 by a numbered TNO observable from JWST in Cycle 1. We will discuss the possible candidates for Cycle 1 occultations that we have identified so far. As JWST station-keeping maneuvers are executed, the list of possible occultations and their uncertainties will be revised. Very accurate relative astrometry will be performed using the latest releases of the Gaia catalog for particularly promising occultation events through established ground-based programs. Suppose a stellar occultation event is confirmed through such an astrometric revision to have a predicted impact parameter less than 3 times the estimated target radius and to have a 1 sigma uncertainty in prediction less than 2 times the target radius. In that case, the ToO observation will be triggered. JWST station-keeping and trajectory-prediction operations have been studied in the context of stellar occultations by solar system bodies [4]. The accuracy of the trajectory predictions is adequate to support this triggering mechanism up to roughly 30 days before an occultation event: the ToO response time is set to 14 days, the minimum value for a non-disruptive ToO.The observations will be made with NIRCam and the F070W and F277W filters. These filters were chosen to maximize the flux from the star while minimizing the reflected flux from the TNO or Centaur. This filter combination could change based on the properties of the occulted star and the occulting TNO/Centaur. Centaurs and trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are considered to be among the most pristine members of our solar system and carry plenty of information on the physical and dynamical processes that shaped our solar system. Here we report the occultation observation of the star Gaia EDR3 133768513079427328 (G: 11.7 mag, R: 11.3 mag) by the TNO (119951) 2002 TC302 on November 11, 2021. The shadow path was predicted to cross central Europe and USA. We received a total of 57 observations reports, with at least 19 positive detections and 25 miss reports (no event detected). 2002 TC302 is a high-inclination (i ~ 35°) TNO in a 2:5 resonance with Neptune, orbiting the Sun in an average distance of about 55 au. The radiometric diameter from Herschel and Spitzer thermal observations is 584.1 (+106.5, -88.0) km [1], while the analysis of a multi-chord stellar occultation observed on 28 January 2018, combined with light curve data, revealed an area-equivalent diameter of 499.6 ± 10.2 km [2]. From our preliminary elliptical profile fit of the 11 November 2021 occultation observations we derived a projected area-equivalent diameter of 500.3 ± 2.5 km, which is consistent with the above mentioned value from the previous stellar occultation in 2018. The 2018 and 2021 occultation diameters are significant (about 84 km) smaller than the radiometric diameter, which might be even larger (D ~ 643 km) after a reanalysis of the Herschel data [3]. This discrepancy might indicate the existence of an unresolved satellite, but other possibilities are being considered as well [see also 2,3]. From this event, we derive a surface pressure for Pluto's atmosphere of psurf=12.23-0.38+0.65 μbar. This shows that Pluto's atmosphere has been in a plateau phase since mid-2015, a result which is in excellent agreement with the Pluto volatile transport model of Meza et al. This value does not support the pressure decrease reported by independent teams, based on occultations observed in 2018 and 2019 by Young et al. and Arimatsu et al., respectively. © 2021. Physical properties of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) have been of increasing interest in the last two decades, as these objects are considered to be among the least altered through the Solar System evolution, and thus preserve valuable information about its origin [1]. The study of these objects through the ground-based method of stellar occultations has risen in the last years, as this technique allows the determination of physical properties with considerably good accuracies [2,3,4]. Here we present the results of the multi-chord stellar occultation of the GAIA source 3444789965847631104 (mv≈16.8) by the TNO (19521) Chaos on 2020 November 20, which was predicted within our systematic programme on stellar occultations by TNOs and outer solar system bodies [5]. The prediction was updated with astrometric observations carried out two days before the event with the 1.23-m telescope at Calar Alto observatory in Almería, Spain, and it was favorable to the South of Europe. The campaign that we organized involved 19 observing sites and resulted in three positive detections, one of them obtained from the 4.2-m WHT telescope at La Palma, 11 negative detections, and 5 sites that could not observe due to bad weather. We derived the instantaneous limb of Chaos by fitting the extremities of the positive chords to an ellipse to determine accurate size, shape, and geometric albedo for this object. The preliminary results give a slightly smaller area-equivalent diameter than the one derived from Herschel thermal data [6], but photometric observations of this object are still under analysis to complement and improve the results. We have performed numerical simulations of narrow rings around small bodies, addressing both the m=2 resonance perturbations induced by a rotating tri-axial ellipsoidal central body and the m=1 perturbations due to a mass anomaly on the surface of the central body. The simulations include up to 1e5 mutually colliding particles, and their partially inelastic impacts are resolved with the soft-sphere treatment introduced in Salo (1995; for details see Salo et al. 2018). An azimuthally complete ring is followed, and the integrations are performed in an inertial center-of-mass frame, lasting up to 1e5 central body rotations. Our goal is to see under which conditions the perturbation may prevent the collision-induced viscous spreading of the ring, instead leading to a confinement. Our study is motivated by the narrow dense rings discovered around the tri-axial Centaur object Chariklo (Braga-Ribas et al. 2014) and the dwarf planet Haumea (Ortiz et al. 2017). In particular the Chariklo ring consists of two narrow components, with the inner ring having an optical depth of the order of unity and possessing sharp edges. While the ellipticity of the ring is poorly constrained (measurements are consistent with a circular ring), it is known to exhibit substantial width variations (Berard et al. AJ, 154, 144). Both Chariklo and Haumea rings are close to a distance where the orbital period equals three central body rotations, corresponding to a 2/6 resonance with a rotating ellipsoidal body, and a 1/3 resonance for a mass anomaly (Sicardy et al. 2019). Sicardy et al. (2019) demonstrated that torques connected to resonances lead to a rapid clearing of particles from the vicinity of the central body, up to distances where orbital period equals two central body rotation periods. Their test particle calculations approximated the effects of impacts with an additional Stokes friction term. Our realistic collisional simulations confirm these results, and also indicate that the m=2 perturbation by the ellipsoidal body has an insignificant effect at the 2/6 resonance. On the other hand, we find that a sufficiently strong mass anomaly may eventually lead to formation of a narrow confined ring near 1/3 (Fig. 1). What maintains the ring confined? Our favored mechanism is the reversal of angular momentum flux. Without perturbation, the outward flow of angular momentum, together with collisional dissipation, always implies radial dispersal of a narrow ring. However, in a strongly perturbed ring (say with an eccentricity gradient related to width variations) the direction of flux may reverse, leading to a confinement of sharp edges (Borderies et al. 1982). In Hänninen and Salo (1994, 1995; see also Goldreich et al 1995) such a confinement was verified in direct simulations of first order satellite Lindblad resonances, including the inner 2/1 (ILR) and outer 1/2 (OLR). Moreover, thesimulation-measured pressure tensor was shown to be in accordance with the theoretical mechanism. With the current code we have verified this early simulation result, and extended similar measurements to the 1/3 case. However, the 1/3 behaviour is more complicated due to the different order of the resonance. While in the ILR and OLR resonances the response of the ring is more or less steady in the frame rotating with the perturber, this is not so in the 1/3 case. We are currently investigating in detail the confinement/ flux reversal mechanism, which results will be reported. We will also discuss the scaling between the simulated particle size and the magnitude of the mass anomaly required for confinement. Eventually, in order to extend the calculations to realistic particle sizes, a larger number of particles needs to be simulated in a multi-processor environment: for that purpose we plan to use the new REBOUND-based soft-sphere code recently applied to local simulations of viscous overstability (Mondino-Llermanos and Salo, this meeting; submitted to MNRAS). The soft-sphere impact treatment is important as the ringlets have a large optical depth; it will also facilitate the later inclusion of ring self-gravity, important for rings near the Roche zone where temporary clumping of particles is expected. With μ=0.01 the perturbation is too weak to prevent the collisional spreading of the ring. With μ=0.03 (same simulation as in the upper row) and μ=0.1 the particle orbits gradually get organized in the vicinity of the resonance and eventually experience a rapid excitement of eccentricities accompanied by an outward drift in Lz. Within the Lucky Star international collaboration* on stellar occultations by TNOs and other outer solar system bodies, we predicted the occultation by the TNO (143707) 2003 UY117 of an mV ~ 14.6 mag star on 23 October 2020. Around a week before the occultation date, we updated and refined the prediction using high precision astrometry obtained using the 2 m Liverpool telescope located at El Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, Spain. The update resulted in a shadow path with good observability potential. We carried out a specific campaign involving 27 observing sites in the south of Spain and North of Africa to observe the occultation. We recorded 4 positive detections and several very close misses to the south of the body. With this information we determined the silhouette of 2003 UY117 at the moment of the occultation. We also obtained the geometric albedo and the size for this object. In addition to this, we carried out several photometric runs with large telescopes to determine the rotation period and rotational phase at the time of the occultation. The body presents a clear double-peaked rotational light curve consistent with a triaxial ellipsoid of considerable elongation, which means that a rotational light curve analysis is critical to correctly interpret the occultation results. The preliminary analysis indicates a larger equivalent diameter than that determined from Herschel thermal data, although consistent within the large error bars of the thermal determination. The Centaur (10199) Chariklo is a small body moving in an elliptical orbit, between Saturn and Uranus, with heliocentric distances ranging 13.1 and 18.9 au. It is the largest object known in this orbital region, and since its discovery in 1997 (Ticha et al. 1997), many studies tried to characterise this object. From the literature, different observational techniques give an equivalent surface radius ranging between 109 and 151 km (Sekiguchi et al., 2012; Lellouch et al., 2017). Additionally, a ring system was detected by Braga-Ribas et al. (2014) using stellar occultation data sets acquired in 2013. Between 2013 and 2016, other stellar occultations brought more detailed information on this system (Bérard et al., 2017; Leiva et al., 2017). A stellar occultation occurs when a solar system object passes in front of a star for an observer on Earth. Using this technique it is possible to determine sizes and shapes at kilometre precision and to obtain other physical parameters, such as its albedo, the presence of an atmosphere, rings, jets, or topographic features (Braga-Ribas et al., 2013, 2019; Dias-Oliveira et al., 2015, 2017; Benedetti-Rossi et al., 2019; Ortiz et al., 2017; Leiva et al., 2017; Bérard et al., 2017; Santos-Sanz et al., 2021). After the release of the Gaia DR2 catalogue (Gaia collaboration et al., 2018), the stars' positions are known with uncertainties below one milliarcsecond (mas). Moreover, after successful stellar occultations observations, Chariklo ephemeris was updated, now it has uncertainties below five mas ($\sim$50 km at Chariklo's distance). Accurate star's positions and updated ephemeris resulted in successful observational campaigns in Namibia (22/06/2017), South America (23/07/2017) and La Réunion (08/08/2019). These were the first Chariklo occultations with more than three chords across the main body. These events increased our knowledge about Chariklo's shape, and this information can be used to constrain the dynamic of its rings. Six other events were observed between 2017 and 2020, however with fewer detections on the main body. In this work, we will present the obtained results, such as the global shape of Chariklo's rings system, including its pole determination, the ring width variation, structures within the rings (see Figure 1), the width of the gap between C1R and C2R and limits for the ring eccentricity and particle's sizes. Also, the 3D shape of Chariklo was obtained from eleven stellar occultations observed between 2013 and 2020 (see Figure 2). The parameters obtained in this work should be useful for constraining dynamical models of Chariklo and its rings and provide new insights into the formation and evolution of this system. Narrow and dense rings have been discovered around the small Centaur object Chariklo (Braga-Ribas et al 2014) and the dwarf planet Haumea (Ortiz et al. 2017). Both ring systems are observed close to the 1/3 resonance with the central body, meaning that the particles complete one revolution while the body completes three rotations.The potential of small bodies can have large non-axisymmetric terms when compared to the giants planets. As a result, strong resonant couplings occur between the body and a surrounding collisional, dissipative disk (Sicardy et al. 2019). Those resonances are described by a critical angle φ= mλ' - (m-j)λ - jϖ, where j>0 is the resonant order (i.e. the order in eccentricity of the resonant term in the Hamiltonian), m (m or m>0) is the azimuthal number, λ' (resp. λ) is the rotational angle of the body (resp. the particle), and ϖ is the longitude of periapse of the particle.Among the j= 1 (Lindblad), 2, 3 and 4 resonances, only the cases j= 1 and 2 can have an unstable (more precisely non-elliptic) point at the origin of the phase portrait describing [X= e.cos(φ), Y= e.sin(φ)], where e is the eccentricity and φ is the critical angle previously defined. The 1/3 resonant in particular has m=-1 and j=2, and is thus of second order. For a narrow range of the Jacobi constant associated with that resonance [i.e. a - (3/2)a0e2, where a is the ring's semi-major axis and a0 is the semi-major axis at exact resonance], the origin of the phase portrait is hyperbolic, hence unstable.This instability triggers an eccentricity excitation of the ring near the 1/3 resonance, a source of torque on that ring. Such resonance can be created by a mass anomaly in the central body. We have tested this mechanism by simulating a ring with 30,000 particles undergoing inelastic collisions near the 1/3 resonance with Chariklo, in the presence of a large mass anomaly that represents 0.1 the mass of the body. Preliminary results are shown in the figure above. The density of particles has been plotted in a (Jacobi constant-eccentricity) diagram, with the exact resonance location plotted as the vertical dash-dotted gray line. The solid gray line is the expected maximum eccentricity reached by particles for the corresponding Jacobi constant. At that point, the ring has settled just outside the resonance location, reaching a balance between the eccentricity and semi-major dampings due to inelastic collisions, and the eccentricity excitation caused by the resonance. More quantitative results will be presented, in particular the effect of smaller, more realistic, mass anomalies, and the assessment of a possible slow outward drift caused by a residual secular torque on the ring. Meanwhile, the observed behavior in those simulations appears as a promising mechanism to explain the proximity of both Chariklo's and Haumea's rings to the 1/3 resonance. Centaurs and trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are considered to be the most pristine members of our solar system, beside Oort cloud objects. The observation of stellar occultations by solar system objects is a powerful technique to directly measure their size and profile shapes with kilometer accuracy [e.g. 1, and references therein], to probe the environment of them with the possibility to reveal satellites and / or rings [e.g. 2, 3] and to detect or to constrain an atmosphere down to the nanobar level [e.g. 4]. Finally it provides a high-accuracy astrometric measurement, which can for example be used for improving the prediction of subsequent occultation events within short or mid-term time spans. Here we report the observation of an occultation event of the star Gaia DR2 4111560308371475840 (G = 14.6 mag) by the TNO (119951) 2002 KX14 on May 26, 2020. The shadow was predicted to cross eastern Europe (Fig. 1) and the event was observed successfully by ten stations supplemented by another good dozen of stations which had a miss (no event detected). 2002 KX14 is a low-inclination (i ~ 0.4°), low-eccentricity (e ~ 0.04) cold classical TNO, orbiting the Sun at an average distance of a ~ 39 au. The radiometric diameter is given as 455 ± 27 km [5]. On April 26, 2012, an occultation by this object was observed with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma (Spain) at high cadence. From this single-chord observation (with a chord length of 415 ± 1 km), combined with accurate astrometry at the time of occultation, an area-equivalent diameter of at least 365 (+30, -21) km was estimated [6]. The rotational period is yet unknown. The lightcurve amplitude is reported as Δm ]). The occultation was predicted within the Lucky Star project. 121 astrometric observations filed at the MPC plus 56 observations derived at observatories used by the LS collaboration, covering the time span 1984-2018, were used to derive the NIMAv7 [8] orbit solution, which was used for the occultation event search. As the event was suitable to be observed by smaller telescopes, the amateur community was informed via mail lists etc. Details of the prediction are given on the LS project website [9]. Ten stations recorded the occultation with apertures between 20 cm and 80 cm. Five of them used analogue video technique for the recording, and five applied CCD cameras. 14 stations reported a non-detection of the occultation event within their observing windows (Fig. 1). By applying the method described in [10], we fitted the extremities of the positive chords to an ellipse to derive the instantaneous limb of 2002 KX14. From the five fit parameters (center of the ellipse, semi-major and semi-minor axis and the position angle of the semi-minor axis) we derived the size and shape of the 2D limb as well as a high-accurate astrometric position for the time of occultation. Photometric observations to derive the light curve amplitude and the rotational period, with the aim to put constraints on the albedo as well as on the 3D size and the shape of 2002 KX14 are planned. Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) are small bodies that orbit the Sun with a semi-major axis larger than Neptune's4. They are thought to be remnants of the Solar System primordial disk and can retain information about the early stages of our planetary system's formation. Since the discovery of Albion3 in 1992, thousands of objects were detected in this orbital region, but only the Pluto system13 and (486958) Arrokoth14 has been visited so far by a spacecraft. Detailed topographic studies of Pluto and Charon6,7 presented superficial features of ~6 km while reprocessed Voyager images of Uranus' largest satellite - Oberon, show a mountain11 of ~11 km. Discovered15 in 2002 the big TNO 2002 MS4 is dynamically classified as a hot classical TNO. Thermal measurements made by Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory, resulted an area equivalent diameter16 of 934 +/- 47 km and a geometric albedo at V-band of 0.051-0.022+0.036. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method that has been presenting exciting advances in the knowledge of Centaurs' and TNOs' physical properties2,9,10,12 and rings1,8. We predicted and observed seven stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2021 under the European Research Council (ERC) Lucky Star project framework. The most successful one involved 116 telescopes from Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia on 8 August 2020. Here we will present results about 2002 MS4 size, shape and topographic features. Stellar occultation data show an equivalent diameter of about 800 +/- 24 km. On the projected northern hemisphere, they are evidence of topographic features of about 20 km. Following the procedure described by Johnson and McGetchin in 1973, and assuming that 2002 MS4 is mainly composed of ice with densities between 1.0 - 2.0 g/cm3, this object supports surface features of about 7 km. However, if we consider that ice density increases toward the object's centre, then 2002 MS4 can support more prominent features. Figure 1 presents the projected profile detected on the 8 August 2020 stellar occultation. Figure 1: blue lines are the positive detections with uncertainties in red. Green segments present the surrounding region and in black is the best projected elliptical limb. Shaded region are the solutions inside the 3σ. Next figure presents the radial dispersion of the observed points from the black ellipse as a position angle function. This angle is measured from the local North and increases toward the East (Figure 1). Shaded rectangles show the evidence of a mountain and a depression of about 20 km between 10 and 55 degrees. Additionally, the northernmost grazing light curve at 2002 MS4 acquired from Varages observatory in France presents a direct detection of a minor surface feature. Note that, in figure 3, the star partially appears before the reappearance, probably due to a depression or a local mountain. The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first ring system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow sizes and shapes to be determined with kilometre accuracy, and provide the characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Aims. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, our aim is to constrain the physical parameters of Chariklo and its rings. We also determine the structure of the rings, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. Methods. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the datasets, from which ingress and egress times, and the ring widths and opacity values were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and ring structure. Results. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirm the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation in radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating a ring particle size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3σ), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than ~0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over 11 occultations, and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8-1.5+1.4, 135.2-2.8+1.4, and 99.1-2.7+5.4 km. Ultimately, we provided seven astrometric positions at a milliarcsecond accuracy level, based on Gaia EDR3, and use it to improve Chariklo's ephemeris. © B. E. Our latest shadow path prediction was favourable to a large region in Europe. Observations were arranged in a broad region inside the nominal shadow path. Series of images were obtained with 29 telescopes throughout Europe and from six of them (five in Spain and one in Greece) we detected the occultation. This is the fourth centaur, besides Chariklo, Chiron, and Bienor, for which a multichord stellar occultation is reported. By means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords, we obtained the limb of 2002 GZ32 during the occultation, resulting in an ellipse with axes of 305 ± 17 km × 146 ± 8 km. From this limb, thanks to a rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we derived the geometric albedo of 2002 GZ32 (pV = 0.043 ± 0.007) and a 3D ellipsoidal shape with axes 366 km × 306 km × 120 km. This shape is not fully consistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium for the known rotation period of 2002 GZ32. The size (albedo) obtained from the occultation is respectively smaller (greater) than that derived from the radiometric technique but compatible within error bars. International audience; We publish a set of 16 light curves of mutual events inside the synchronous system of the Jupiter Trojan (617) Patroclus. Patroclus is th only binary system of the six target asteroids of the forthcoming NASA Discovery-class mission Lucy. Determining the physical parameters of the system is therefore of primary importance in helping to plan the flyby mission.Light curves were acquired during two follow-up campaigns of 6 months each between January-June 2007 and July-December 2012. Eight small eclipse events of amplitude of 0.2-0.3 mag were recorded in 2007. On the other hand, in 2012, the amplitudes of the phenomena were much deeper, between 0.6 and 0.8 mag, due to a nearly edge-on configuration of the system.We refined the sidereal period to 102.78624 ± 0.00015h = 4.282760 ± 0.000005days. The J2000 ecliptic coordinates of the pole of the system were found to be λ = 235.3 ± 1.2° andβ = - 62.4 ± 0.2°. The volume ratio was determined equal to q = 0.69 ± 0.08. By using a model of inhomogeneous Roche ellipsoids in hydrostatic equilibrium, we derived a bulk density of 0.81 ± 0.16g/cm3 and a surface grain density of 2.69 ± 0.36g/cm3 in agreement with spectroscopic observations of this P-type asteroid.As a validation, our solution was applied to revisit recent results obtained from observations of another type: AO astrometry and stellar occultation. Our model is thus perfectly able to account for these observations after fitting the mutual separation to the value of 695 ± 10km. Consequently, the area-equivalent diameter of the system as a whole is derived DΑ = 168.8 ± 2.6km.

Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are remnants of our planetary system formation, and their physical properties have invaluable information for evolutionary theories. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method for studying these distant small bodies and has presented exciting results. These observations can provide precise profiles of the involved body, allowing an accurate determination of its size and shape. Aims. The goal is to show that even single-chord detections of TNOs allow us to measure their milliarcsecond astrometric positions in the reference frame of the Gaia second data release (DR2). Accurate ephemerides can then be generated, allowing predictions of stellar occultations with much higher reliability. Methods. We analyzed data from various stellar occultation detections to obtain astrometric positions of the involved bodies. The events published before the Gaia era were updated so that the Gaia DR2 stellar catalog is the reference, thus providing accurate positions. Events with detection from one or two different sites (single or double chord) were analyzed to determine the event duration. Previously determined sizes were used to calculate the position of the object center and its corresponding error with respectto the detected chord and the International Celestial Reference System propagated Gaia DR2 star position. Results. We derive 37 precise astrometric positions for 19 TNOs and four Centaurs. Twenty-one of these events are presented here for the first time. Although about 68% of our results are based on single-chord detection, most have intrinsic precision at the submilliarcsecond level. Lower limits on the diameter of bodies such as Sedna, 2002 KX14, and Echeclus, and also shape constraints on 2002 VE95, 2003 FF128, and 2005 TV189 are presented as valuable byproducts. Conclusions. Using the Gaia DR2 catalog, we show that even a single detection of a stellar occultation allows improving the object ephemeris significantly, which in turn enables predicting a future stellar occultation with high accuracy. Transneptunian Objects (TNOs) are the remnants of our planetary system and can retain information about the early stages of the Solar System formation. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method used to study these distant bodies which have been presenting exciting results mainly about their physical properties. The big TNO called 2002 MS4 was discovered by Trujillo, C. A., & Brown, M. E., in 2002 using observations made at the Palomar Observatory (EUA). It is classified as a hot classical TNO, with orbital parameters a = 42 AU, e = 0.139, and i = 17.7º. Using thermal measurements with PACS (Herschel) and MIPS (Spitzer Space Telescope) instruments, Vilenius et al. 2012 obtained a radius of 467 +/- 23.5 km and an albedo of 0.051. Predictions of stellar occultations by this body in 2019 were obtained using the Gaia DR2 catalogue and NIMA ephemeris (Desmars et al. 2015) and made available in the Lucky Star web page (https://lesia.obspm.fr/lucky-star/). Four events were observed in South America and Canada. The first stellar occultation was detected on 09 July 2019, resulting in two positives and four negatives chords, including a close one which proven to be helpful to constrain the body’s size. This detection also allowed us to obtain a precise astrometric position that was used to update its ephemeris and improve the predictions of the following events. Two of them were detected on 26 July 2019, separated by eight hours. The first event was observed from South America and resulted in three positive detections, while the second, observed from Canada, resulted in a single chord. Another double chord event was observed on 19 August 2019 also from Canada. Due to its size, it is expected that 2002 MS4 is in hydrostatic equilibrium. Thirouin, A. 2013 obtained a rotational light curve of 2002 MS4 and determined two possible periods (7.33 h and 10.44 h) with low amplitude variation (0.05 +/- 0.01 mag). Admitting that it has a Maclaurin shape, the projected limb in the sky plane for Earth-based observers should be the same in the 09 July and 26 July events. The multi-chord detection allows determining an interval of parameters for size and shape. Considering that the same figure should have been observed in the 09 July event, we could use the both chords and the negative observations to constrain its physical parameters. With that, we could determine that 2002 MS4 has an equivalent radius of 385 +/- 1 km (Figure 1). Our results indicate that this TNO is about 100 km smaller in diameter than the value obtained by Vilenius et al. 2012, implying an albedo of 0.076 (Hv = 4.0 +/- 0.6) . The astrometric positions derived from these data were also helpful to improve forthcoming stellar occultations, in special the one crossing Europe on 08 August this year. More data from stellar occultations and observations of rotational light curves will help to confirm these results and assumptions. 1 IntroductionCentaurs are objects that orbit the Sun with semi-major axis between those of Jupiter and Neptune, according to the JPL Horizons definition https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb_help.cgi?class=CEN. These objects are thought to come from the trans-Neptunian region being injected into inner parts of the solar system due to planetary encounters, mostly with Neptune [1]. Therefore, centaurs present an excellent opportunity to study smaller trans-Neptunian objects much closer to the Earth, providing a better characterization of their physical properties. During the last years, there has been a growing momentum in the interest about the centaur population due to the discovery of ring systems around two of them, Chariklo [2] and Chiron [3,4], which has opened a new branch of research in order to understand how such rings are formed and how they can survive around these small bodies.(54598) Bienor is one of the largest centaurs known to date, with a diameter of ∼ 200 km estimated from Herschel Space Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope and ALMA thermal measurements [5,6], similar to that of Chiron and Chariklo. Bienor also has ellipsoidal shape and water ice spectral features analogous to Chariklo and Chiron [7,8,9], although its rotation period of ∼ 9.14 h, without being very slow, is slightly over the average of the TNO/centaur population [10]. From the similarities with Chariklo and Chiron and from other reasons it has been proposed that Bienor could possess a ring system, similar to what has been found in the above mentioned centaurs [9].2 ObservationsWithin our program of physical characterization of TNOs and centaurs, a stellar occultation by the centaur Bienor was predicted to occur on January 11, 2019, with good observability potential. High accuracy astrometry runs were carried out to refine the prediction, and as a result, a shadow path favorable for the south of Europe was derived. This encouraged us to carry out an occultation observation campaign that resulted in 5 positive detections from 4 observing sites located in Spain and Portugal (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). Apart from occultations by the centaurs Chiron [3,4], Chariklo [2,11,12] and 2002 GZ32 [13], no other multichord occultations by centaurs had ever been obtained. 3 ResultsFrom the analysis of the occultation chords we obtain the instantaneous limb fit of Bienor at the moment of the occultation and combining this information with rotational light curves obtained shortly after the occultation, we infer the rotational phase at the time of the occultation and the three dimensional shape of this Centaur under the assumption of a triaxial ellipsoidal shape. The area-equivalent diameter and geometric albedo are also derived and its mass density can be constrained under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. Our results are compared with radiometric results obtained using Herschel Space Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope and ALMA facilities. At 30-50 K, the temperatures typical for surfaces in the Kuiper Belt (e.g. Stern & Trafton 2008), only seven species have sublimation pressures higher than 1 nbar (Fray & Schmitt 2009): Ne, N$_2$, CO, Ar, O$_2$, CH$_4$, and Kr. Of these, N$_2$, CO, and CH$_4$ have been detected or inferred on the surfaces of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). The presence of tenuous atmospheres above these volatile ices depends on the sublimation pressures, which are very sensitive to the composition, temperatures, and mixing states of the volatile ices. Therefore, the retention of volatiles on a TNO is related to its formation environment and thermal history. The surface volatiles may be transported via seasonally varying atmospheres and their condensation might be responsible for the high surface albedos of some of these bodies. The most sensitive searches for tenuous atmospheres are made by the method of stellar occultation, which have been vital for the study of the atmospheres of Triton and Pluto, and has to-date placed upper limits on the atmospheres of 11 other bodies. The recent release of the Gaia astrometric catalog has led to a "golden age" in the ability to predict TNO occultations in order to increase the observational data base.

We present results from the first recorded stellar occultation by the large trans-Neptunian object (174567) Varda that was observed on September 10, 2018. Varda belongs to the high-inclination dynamically excited population, and has a satellite, Ilmarë, which is half the size of Varda. Aims. We determine the size and albedo of Varda and constrain its 3D shape and density. Methods. Thirteen different sites in the USA monitored the event, five of which detected an occultation by the main body. A best-fitting ellipse to the occultation chords provides the instantaneous limb of the body, from which the geometric albedo is computed. The size and shape of Varda are evaluated, and its bulk density is constrained using Varda's mass as is known from previous works. Results. The best-fitting elliptical limb has semi-major (equatorial) axis of (383 ± 3) km and an apparent oblateness of 0.066 ± 0.047, corresponding to an apparent area-equivalent radius R′equiv = (370±7) km and geometric albedo pv = 0.099 ± 0.002 assuming a visual absolute magnitude HV = 3.81 ± 0.01. Using three possible rotational periods for the body (4.76, 5.91, and 7.87 h), we derive corresponding MacLaurin solutions. Furthermore, given the low-amplitude (0.06 ± 0.01) mag of the single-peaked rotational light-curve for the aforementioned periods, we consider the double periods. For the 5.91 h period (the most probable) and its double (11.82 h), we find bulk densities and true oblateness of ρ = (1.78 ± 0.06) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.235 ± 0.050, and ρ = (1.23 ± 0.04) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.080 ± 0.049. However, it must be noted that the other solutions cannot be excluded just yet. © D. In terms of scientific output, the best way to study solar system bodies is sending spacecraft to make in-situ measurements or to observe at close distance. Probably, the second best means to learn about important physical properties of solar system objects is through stellar occultations. By combining occultation observations from several sites, size and shape can be derived with kilometric accuracy. Also, atmospheric properties can be derived if the body has an atmosphere. Furthermore, the technique can detect rings and even satellites (although rarely) around the main body. Except for the very special cases of Pluto and Charon, stellar occultations by Transneptunian Objects (TNOs) had never been observed until October 2009. This was because the ephemeris of the TNOs have much larger uncertainties than their angular diameters (typically of the order of ~10 milliarcsecond) and also because stellar catalogs were not accurate to the milliarcsecond level. Despite the difficulties, at the time of this writing, 43 occultations by 22 different Trans-Neptunian Objects, and 17 occultations by 5 Centaurs have been detected thanks to the efforts of several teams. Due to the complications of accurately predicting and observing these events, most of the successes have been achieved through wide international collaboration, which is a key issue to succeed in observing stellar occultations by TNOs. Multichord occultations are typically detected at a rate of ~3 per year on average, whereas the majority of the observed occultations are single-chord detections, which means that only one site detects the occultation. In these cases, no tight constraints on size and shape can be derived from those observations alone. Deriving physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects is important for the understanding of our Solar System. This requires observational efforts and the development of techniques suitable for these studies. Aims. Our aim is to characterize the large trans-Neptunian object (TNO) 2002 TC302. Methods. Stellar occultations offer unique opportunities to determine key physical properties of TNOs. On 28 January 2018, 2002 TC302 occulted a mv ∼ 15.3 star with designation 593-005847 in the UCAC4 stellar catalog, corresponding to Gaia source 130957813463146112. Twelve positive occultation chords were obtained from Italy, France, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Also, four negative detections were obtained near the north and south limbs. This represents the best observed stellar occultation by a TNO other than Pluto in terms of the number of chords published thus far. From the 12 chords, an accurate elliptical fit to the instantaneous projection of the body can be obtained that is compatible with the near misses. Results. The resulting ellipse has major and minor axes of 543 ± 18 km and 460 ± 11 km, respectively, with a position angle of 3 ± 1 degrees for the minor axis. This information, combined with rotational light curves obtained with the 1.5 m telescope at Sierra Nevada Observatory and the 1.23 m telescope at Calar Alto observatory, allows us to derive possible three-dimensional shapes and density estimations for the body based on hydrostatic equilibrium assumptions. The effective diameter in equivalent area is around 84 km smaller than the radiometrically derived diameter using thermal data from Herschel and Spitzer Space Telescopes. This might indicate the existence of an unresolved satellite of up to ∼300 km in diameter, which is required to account for all the thermal flux, although the occultation and thermal diameters are compatible within their error bars given the considerable uncertainty of the thermal results. The existence of a potential satellite also appears to be consistent with other ground-based data presented here. From the effective occultation diameter combined with absolute magnitude measurements we derive a geometric albedo of 0.147 ± 0.005, which would be somewhat smaller if 2002 TC302 has a satellite. Stellar occultations are a unique technique to access physical characteristics of distant solar system objects from the ground. They allow the measure of the size and the shape at kilometric level, the detection of tenuous atmospheres (few nanobars), and the investigation of close vicinity (satellites, rings) of Transneptunian objects and Centaurs. This technique is made successful thanks to accurate predictions of occultations. Accuracy of the predictions depends on the uncertainty in the position of the occulted star and the object's orbit. The Gaia stellar catalogue (Gaia Collaboration (2017)) now allows to get accurate astrometric stellar positions (to the mas level). The main uncertainty remains on the orbit. In this context, we now take advantage of the NIMA method (Desmars et al.(2015)) for the orbit determination and of the Gaia DR1 catalogue for the astrometry. In this document, we show how the orbit determination is improved by reducing current and some past observations with Gaia DR1. Moreover, we also use more than 45 past positive occultations observed in the 2009-2017 period to derive very accurate astrometric positions only depending on the position of the occulted stars (about few mas with Gaia DR1). We use the case of (10199) Chariklo as an illustration. The main limitation lies in the imprecision of the proper motions which is going to be solved by the Gaia DR2 release.

Progress in astrometry and orbital modelling of planetary moons in the last decade enabled better determinations of their orbits. These studies need accurate positions spread over extended periods. We present the results of the 2014-2015 Brazilian campaign for 40 mutual events from 47 observed light curves by the Galilean satellites plus one eclipse of Amalthea by Ganymede. We also reanalysed and updated results for 25 mutual events observed in the 2009 campaign. All telescopes were equipped with narrow-band filters centred at 889 nm with a width of 15 nm to eliminate the scattered light from Jupiter. The albedos' ratio was determined using images before and after each event. We simulated images of moons, umbra, and penumbra in the sky plane, and integrated their fluxes to compute albedos, simulate light curves and fit them to the observed ones using a chi-square fitting procedure. For that, we used the complete version of the Oren-Nayer reflectance model. The relative satellite positions mean uncertainty was 11.2 mas ($\sim$35 km) and 10.1 mas ($\sim$31 km) for the 2014-2015 and 2009 campaigns respectively. The simulated and observed \textsc{ascii} light curve files are freely available in electronic form at the \textit{Natural Satellites DataBase} (NSDB). The 40/25 mutual events from our 2014-2015/2009 campaigns represent a significant contribution of 17%/15% in comparison with the PHEMU campaigns lead by the IMCCE. Besides that, our result for the eclipse of Amalthea is only the 4$^{th}$ such measurement ever published after the three ones observed by the 2014-2015 international PHEMU campaign. Context. Bright stellar positions are now known with an uncertainty below 1 mas thanks to Gaia DR2. Between 2019-2020, the Galactic plane will be the background of Jupiter. The dense stellar background will lead to an increase in the number of occultations, while the Gaia DR2 catalogue will reduce the prediction uncertainties for the shadow path. Aims. We observed a stellar occultation by the Galilean moon Europa (J2) and propose a campaign for observing stellar occultations for all Galilean moons. Methods. During a predicted period of time, we measured the light flux of the occulted star and the object to determine the time when the flux dropped with respect to one or more reference stars, and the time that it rose again for each observational station. The chords obtained from these observations allowed us to determine apparent sizes, oblatness, and positions with kilometre accuracy. Results. We present results obtained from the first stellar occultation by the Galilean moon Europa observed on 2017 March 31. The apparent fitted ellipse presents an equivalent radius of 1561.2 $\pm$ 3.6 km and oblatenesses 0.0010 $\pm$ 0.0028. A very precise Europa position was determined with an uncertainty of 0.8 mas. We also present prospects for a campaign to observe the future events that will occur between 2019 and 2021 for all Galilean moons. Conclusions. Stellar occultation is a suitable technique for obtaining physical parameters and highly accurate positions of bright satellites close to their primary. A number of successful events can render the 3D shapes of the Galilean moons with high accuracy. The tenuous nitrogen (N2) atmosphere on Pluto undergoes strong seasonal effects due to high obliquity and orbital eccentricity, and has recently (July 2015) been observed by the New Horizons spacecraft. Aims. The main goals of this study are (i) to construct a well calibrated record of the seasonal evolution of surface pressure on Pluto and (ii) to constrain the structure of the lower atmosphere using a central flash observed in 2015. Methods. Eleven stellar occultations by Pluto observed between 2002 and 2016 are used to retrieve atmospheric profiles (density, pressure, temperature) between altitude levels of ~5 and ~380 km (i.e. pressures from ~ 10 μbar to 10 nbar). Results. (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived. Transneptunian objects (TNOs) are a source of invaluable information to access the history and evolution of the outer solar system. However, observing these faint objects is a difficult task. As a consequence, important properties such as size and albedo are known for only a small fraction of them. Now, with the results from deep sky surveys and the Gaia space mission, a new exciting era is within reach as accurate predictions of stellar occultations by numerous distant small solar system bodies become available. From them, diameters with kilometer accuracies can be determined. Albedos, in turn, can be obtained from diameters and absolute magnitudes. We use observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) from November 2012 until February 2016, amounting to 4292847 CCD frames. We searched them for all known small solar system bodies and recovered a total of 202 TNOs and Centaurs, 63 of which have been discovered by the DES collaboration until the date of this writing. Their positions were determined using the Gaia Data Release 2 as reference and their orbits were refined. Stellar occultations were then predicted using these refined orbits plus stellar positions from Gaia. These predictions are maintained, and updated, in a dedicated web service. The techniques developed here are also part of an ambitious preparation to use the data from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), that expects to obtain accurate positions and multifilter photometry for tens of thousands of TNOs., 25 pages, submitted to Astronomical Journal

We report six stellar occultations by (Saturn IX) Phoebe, an irregular satellite of Saturn, obtained between mid-2017 and mid-2019. The 2017 July 06 event is the first stellar occultation by an irregular satellite ever observed. The occultation chords were compared to a 3D shape model of the satellite obtained from Cassini observations. The rotation period available in the literature led to a sub-observer point at the moment of the observed occultations where the chords could not fit the 3D model. A procedure was developed to identify the correct sub-observer longitude. It allowed us to obtain the rotation period with improved precision over currently known value from literature. We show that the difference between the observed and the predicted sub-observer longitude suggests two possible solutions for the rotation period. By comparing these values with recently observed rotational light curves and single-chord stellar occultations, we can identify the best solution for Phoebe's rotational period as $9.27365 \pm 0.00002$ h. From the stellar occultations, we also obtained 6 geocentric astrometric positions in the ICRS as realised by the Gaia-DR2 with uncertainties at the 1-mas level., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

From 1988 to 2016, several stellar occultations have been observed to characterise Pluto's atmosphere and its evolution. From each stellar occultation, an accurate astrometric position of Pluto at the observation epoch is derived. These positions mainly depend on the position of the occulted star and the precision of the timing. Aims. We present 19 Pluto's astrometric positions derived from occultations from 1988 to 2016. Using Gaia DR2 for the positions of the occulted stars, the accuracy of these positions is estimated at 2-10 mas, depending on the observation circumstances. From these astrometric positions, we derive an updated ephemeris of Pluto's system barycentre using the NIMA code. Methods. The astrometric positions were derived by fitting the light curves of the occultation by a model of Pluto's atmosphere. The fits provide the observed position of the centre for a reference star position. In most cases other publications provided the circumstances of the occultation such as the coordinates of the stations, timing, and impact parameter, i.e. the closest distance between the station and centre of the shadow. From these parameters, we used a procedure based on the Bessel method to derive an astrometric position. Results. We derive accurate Pluto's astrometric positions from 1988 to 2016. These positions are used to refine the orbit of Pluto'system barycentre providing an ephemeris, accurate to the milliarcsecond level, over the period 2000-2020, allowing for better predictions for future stellar occultations.© J. The technique of mutual approximations accurately gives the central instant at the maximum apparent approximation of two moving natural satellites in the sky plane. This can be used in ephemeris fitting to infer the relative positions between satellites with high precision. Only the mutual phenomena -- occultations and eclipses -- may achieve better results. However, mutual phenomena only occur every six years in the case of Jupiter. Mutual approximations do not have this restriction and can be observed at any time along the year as long as the satellites are visible. In this work, we present 104 central instants determined from the observations of 66 mutual approximations between the Galilean moons carried out at different sites in Brazil and France during the period 2016--2018. For 28 events we have at least two independent observations. All telescopes were equipped with a narrow-band filter centred at 889 nm with a width of 15 nm to eliminate the scattered light from Jupiter. The telescope apertures ranged between 25--120 cm. For comparison, the precision of the positions obtained with classical CCD astrometry is about 100 mas, for mutual phenomena it can achieve 10 mas or less and the average internal precision obtained with mutual approximations was 11.3 mas. This new kind of simple, yet accurate observations can significantly improve the orbits and ephemeris of Galilean satellites and thus be very useful for the planning of future space missions aiming at the Jovian system., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We present results from three world-wide campaigns that resulted in the detections of two single-chord and one multi-chord stellar occultations by the plutino object (84922) 2003 VS2. From the single-chord occultations in 2013 and 2014 we obtained accurate astrometric positions for the object, while from the multi-chord occultation on 2014 November 7, we obtained the parameters of the best-fitting ellipse to the limb of the body at the time of occultation. We also obtained short-term photometry data for the body in order to derive its rotational phase during the occultation. The rotational light curve present a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.141 ± 0.009 mag. This allows us to reconstruct the 3D shape of the body, with principal semi-axes of a = 313.8 ± 7.1 km, b = 265.5- + 9.8 8.8 km, and c = 247.3- + 43.6 26.6 km, which is not consistent with a Jacobi triaxial equilibrium figure. The derived spherical volume equivalent diameter of 548.3- + 44.6 29.5 km is about 5% larger than the radiometric diameter of 2003 VS2 derived from Herschel data of 523 ± 35 km, but still compatible with it within error bars. From those results we can also derive the geometric albedo (0.123- + 0.014 0.015) and, under the assumption that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid, the density r = 1400- + 300 1000 for the plutino. The disappearances and reappearances of the star during the occultations do not show any compelling evidence for a global atmosphere considering a pressure upper limit of about 1 microbar for a pure nitrogen atmosphere, nor secondary features (e.g., rings or satellite) around the main body. © 2019. GravityCam is a new concept of ground-based imaging instrument capable of delivering significantly sharper images from the ground than is normally possible without adaptive optics. Advances in optical and near infrared imaging technologies allow images to be acquired at high speed without significant noise penalty. Aligning these images before they are combined can yield a 2.5 to 3 fold improvement in image resolution. By using arrays of such detectors, survey fields may be as wide as the telescope optics allows. Consequently, GravityCam enables both wide-field high-resolution imaging and high-speed photometry. We describe the instrument and detail its application to provide demographics of planets and satellites down to Lunar mass (or even below) across the Milky Way. GravityCam is also suited to improve the quality of weak shear studies of dark matter distribution in distant clusters of galaxies and multiwavelength follow-ups of background sources that are strongly lensed by galaxy clusters. The photometric data arising from an extensive microlensing survey will also be useful for asteroseismology studies, while GravityCam can be used to monitor fast multiwavelength flaring in accreting compact objects, and promises to generate a unique data set on the population of the Kuiper belt and possibly the Oort cloud., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures. Gomes-J\'unior et al. (2015) published 3613 positions for the 8 largest irregular satellites of Jupiter and 1787 positions for the largest irregular satellite of Saturn, Phoebe. These observations were made between 1995 and 2014 and have an estimated error of about 60 to 80 mas. Based on this set of positions, we derived new orbits for the eight largest irregular satellites of Jupiter: Himalia, Elara, Pasiphae, Carme, Lysithea, Sinope, Ananke and Leda. For Phoebe we updated the ephemeris from Desmars et al. (2013) using 75% more positions than the previous one. Due to their orbital characteristics, it is common belief that the irregular satellites were captured by the giant planets in the early Solar System, but there is no consensus for a single model explaining where they were formed. Size, shape, albedo and composition would help to trace back their true origin, but these physical parameters are yet poorly known for irregular satellites. The observation of stellar occultations would allow for the determination of such parameters. Indeed Jupiter will cross the galactic plane in 2019-2020 and Saturn in 2018, improving a lot the chances of observing such events in the near future. Using the derived ephemerides and the UCAC4 catalogue we managed to identify 5442 candidate stellar occultations between January 2016 and December 2020 for the 9 satellites studied here. Distant objects in the solar system are crucial to better understand the history and evolution of its outskirts. The stellar occultation technique allows the determination of their sizes and shapes with kilometric accuracy, a detailed investigation of their immediate vicinities, as well as the detection of tenuous atmospheres. The prediction of such events is a key point in this study, and yet accurate enough predictions are available to a handful of objects only. In this work, we briefly discuss the dramatic impact that both the astrometry from the Gaia space mission and the deep sky surveys -- the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in particular -- will have on the prediction of stellar occultations and how they may influence the future of the study of distant small solar system bodies through this technique., 10 pages, 3 figures, ACM2017

We use data from five stellar occultations observed between 2013 and 2016 to constrain Chariklo's size and shape, and the ring reflectivity. We consider four possible models for Chariklo (sphere, Maclaurin spheroid, tri-axial ellipsoid and Jacobi ellipsoid) and we use a Bayesian approach to estimate the corresponding parameters. The spherical model has a radius $R=129\pm3$ km. The Maclaurin model has equatorial and polar radii $a=b=143^{+3}_{-6}$ km and $c=96^{+14}_{-4}$ km, respectively, with density $970^{+300}_{-180}$ kg m$^{-3}$. The ellipsoidal model has semiaxes $a=148^{+6}_{-4}$ km, $b=132^{+6}_{-5}$ km and $c=102^{+10}_{-8}$ km. Finally, the Jacobi model has semiaxes $a$=157$\pm$4 km, $b$=139$\pm$ 4 km and $c$=86$\pm$1 km, and density $796^{+2}_{-4}$ kg m$^{-3}$ . Depending on the model, we obtain topographic features of 6-11 km, typical of Saturn icy satellites with similar size and density. We constrain Chariklo's geometric albedo between 3.1\% (sphere) and 4.9\% (ellipsoid), while the ring $I/F$ reflectivity is less constrained between 0.6\% (Jacobi) and 8.9\% (sphere). The ellipsoid model explains both the optical light curve and the long-term photometry variation of the system, giving a plausible value for the geometric albedo of the ring particles of $10-15\%$. The derived Chariklo's mass of 6-8$\times10^{18}$ kg places the rings close to the 3:1 resonance between the ring mean motion and Chariklo's rotation period., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Schindler, K. et. al., Context. A stellar occultation by a trans-Neptunian object (TNO) provides an opportunity to probe the size and shape of these distant solar system bodies. In the past seven years, several occultations by TNOs have been observed, but mostly from a single location. Only very few TNOs have been sampled simultaneously from multiple locations. Sufficient data that enable a robust estimation of shadow size through an ellipse fit could only be obtained for two objects. Aims. We present the first observation of an occultation by the TNO 2007 UK126 on 15 November 2014, measured by three observers, one nearly on and two almost symmetrical to the shadow's centerline. This is the first multi-chord dataset obtained for a so-called detached object, a TNO subgroup with perihelion distances so large that the giant planets have likely not perturbed their orbits. We also revisit Herschel/PACS far-infrared data, applying a new reduction method to improve the accuracy of the measured fluxes. Combining both datasets allows us to comprehensively characterize 2007 UK126. Methods. We use error-in-variable regression to solve the non-linear problem of propagating timing errors into uncertainties of the ellipse parameters. Based on the shadow's size and a previously reported rotation period, we expect a shape of a Maclaurin spheroid and derive a geometrically plausible size range. To refine our size estimate of 2007 UK126, we model its thermal emission using a thermophysical model code. We conduct a parametric study to predict far-infrared fluxes and compare them to the Herschel/PACS measurements. Results. The favorable geometry of our occultation chords, combined with minimal dead-time imaging, and precise GPS time measurements, allow for an accurate estimation of the shadow size (best-fitting ellipse with axes 645.80 +/- 5.68 km x 597.81 +/- 12.74 km) and the visual geometric albedo (p(V) = 15.0 +/- 1.6%). By combining our analyses of the occultation and the far-infrared data, we can constrain the effective diameter of 2007 UK126 to d(eff) = 599-629 km. Ortiz, José Luis et. al., Haumea-one of the four known trans-Neptunian dwarf planets- is a very elongated and rapidly rotating body1-3. In contrast to other dwarf planets4-6, its size, shape, albedo and density are not well constrained. The Centaur Chariklo was the first body other than a giant planet known to have a ring system7, and the Centaur Chiron was later found to possess something similar to Chariklo's rings8,9. Here we report observations from multiple Earth-based observatories of Haumea passing in front of a distant star (a multichord stellar occultation). Secondary events observed around the main body of Haumea are consistent with the presence of a ring with an opacity of 0.5, width of 70 kilometres and radius of about 2,287 kilometres. The ring is coplanar with both Haumea's equator and the orbit of its satellite Hi'iaka. The radius of the ring places it close to the 3:1 mean-motion resonance with Haumea's spin period-that is, Haumea rotates three times on its axis in the time that a ring particle completes one revolution. The occultation by the main body provides an instantaneous elliptical projected shape with axes of about 1,704 kilometres and 1,138 kilometres. Combined with rotational light curves, the occultation constrains the three-dimensional orientation of Haumea and its triaxial shape, which is inconsistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium. Haumea's largest axis is at least 2,322 kilometres, larger than previously thought, implying an upper limit for its density of 1,885 kilograms per cubic metre and a geometric albedo of 0.51, both smaller than previous estimates1,10,11. In addition, this estimate of the density of Haumea is closer to that of Pluto than are previous estimates, in line with expectations. Benedetti-Rossi, G. et. al., We present results derived from the first multi-chord stellar occultation by the trans-Neptunian object (229762) 2007 UK, observed on 2014 November 15. The event was observed by the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network project and International Occultation Timing Association collaborators throughout the United States. Use of two different data analysis methods obtain a satisfactory fit to seven chords, yielding an elliptical fit to the chords with an equatorial radius of R = 338 km and equivalent radius of R = 319 km. A circular fit also gives a radius of R = 324 km. Assuming that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid with indeterminate aspect angle, and using two published absolute magnitudes for the body, we derive possible ranges for geometric albedo between p = 0.159 and p = 0.189 , and for the body oblateness between ∈ = 0.105 and ∈ = 0.118 . The icy dwarf planet Makemake has projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 and 1,502 ± 45 km and a V-band geometric albedo larger than Pluto’s but smaller than Eris’s, with no global Pluto-like atmosphere. Makemake is thought to be the third-largest dwarf planet in our Solar System, a little smaller than Pluto and Eris, but until now knowledge of its size and albedo were only approximate. This paper reports the results of observations of the occultation of a faint star known as NOMAD 1181-0235723 by Makemake on 23 April 2011. The data confirm that Makemake is smaller than Pluto and Eris, with axes of 1,430±9 km and 1,502±45 km. Makemake's mean geometric albedo — the ratio of light reflected to light received — is intermediate between that of Pluto and that of Eris. All three are icy, making them among the most reflective objects in the Solar System. And the occultation light curves rule out the presence of a global Pluto-like atmosphere on Makemake, although the presence of dark terrain might imply the presence of a localized atmosphere. Pluto and Eris are icy dwarf planets with nearly identical sizes, comparable densities and similar surface compositions as revealed by spectroscopic studies1,2. Pluto possesses an atmosphere whereas Eris does not; the difference probably arises from their differing distances from the Sun, and explains their different albedos3. Makemake is another icy dwarf planet with a spectrum similar to Eris and Pluto4, and is currently at a distance to the Sun intermediate between the two. Although Makemake’s size (1,420 ± 60 km) and albedo are roughly known5,6, there has been no constraint on its density and there were expectations that it could have a Pluto-like atmosphere4,7,8. Here we report the results from a stellar occultation by Makemake on 2011 April 23. Our preferred solution that fits the occultation chords corresponds to a body with projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 km (1σ) and 1,502 ± 45 km, implying a V-band geometric albedo pV = 0.77 ± 0.03. This albedo is larger than that of Pluto, but smaller than that of Eris. The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4–12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible. A density of 1.7 ± 0.3 g cm−3 is inferred from the data.

International audience; We present results from a multi-chord Pluto stellar occultation observed on 2015 June 29 from New Zealand and Australia. This occurred only two weeks before the NASA New Horizons flyby of the Pluto system and serves as a useful comparison between ground-based and space results. We find that Pluto's atmosphere is still expanding, with a significant pressure increase of 5 ± 2% since 2013 and a factor of almost three since 1988. This trend rules out, as of today, an atmospheric collapse associated with Pluto's recession from the Sun. A central flash, a rare occurrence, was observed from several sites in New Zealand. The flash shape and amplitude are compatible with a spherical and transparent atmospheric layer of roughly 3 km in thickness whose base lies at about 4 km above Pluto's surface, and where an average thermal gradient of about 5 K km−1 prevails. We discuss the possibility that small departures between the observed and modeled flash are caused by local topographic features (mountains) along Pluto's limb that block the stellar light. Finally, using two possible temperature profiles, and extrapolating our pressure profile from our deepest accessible level down to the surface, we obtain a possible range of 11.9–13.7 μbar for the surface pressure.

In this paper, we investigate the opportunities provided by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for significant scientific advances in the study of Solar System bodies and rings using stellar occultations. The strengths and weaknesses of the stellar occultation technique are evaluated in light of JWST's unique capabilities. We identify several possible JWST occultation events by minor bodies and rings and evaluate their potential scientific value. These predictions depend critically on accurate a priori knowledge of the orbit of JWST near the Sun–Earth Lagrange point 2 (L2). We also explore the possibility of serendipitous stellar occultations by very small minor bodies as a byproduct of other JWST observing programs. Finally, to optimize the potential scientific return of stellar occultation observations, we identify several characteristics of JWST's orbit and instrumentation that should be taken into account during JWST's development.

We report on the results of a six-month photometric study of the main-belt binary C-type asteroid 121 Hermione, performed during its 2007 opposition. We took advantage of the rare observational opportunity afforded by one of the annual equinoxes of Hermione occurring close to its opposition in June 2007. The equinox provides an edge-on aspect for an Earth-based observer, which is well suited to a thorough study of Hermione's physical characteristics. The catalog of observations carried out with small telescopes is presented in this work, together with new adaptive optics (AO) imaging obtained between 2005 and 2008 with the Yepun 8-m VLT telescope and the 10-m Keck telescope. The most striking result is confirmation that Hermione is a bifurcated and elongated body, as suggested by Marchis et al., (2005). A new effective diameter of 187 +/- 6 km was calculated from the combination of AO, photometric and thermal observations. The new diameter is some 10% smaller than the hitherto accepted radiometric diameter based on IRAS data. The reason for the discrepancy is that IRAS viewed the system almost pole-on. New thermal observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope agree with the diameter derived from AO and lightcurve observations. On the basis of the new AO astrometric observations of the small 32-km diameter satellite we have refined the orbit solution and derived a new value of the bulk density of Hermione of 1.4 +0.5/-0.2 g cm-3. International audience; Every 42 years, the Earth and the Sun pass through the plane of the orbits of the main satellites of Uranus. In these occasions, mutual occultations and eclipses between these bodies can be seen from the Earth. The current Uranus equinox from 2007 to 2009 offers a precious opportunity to observe these events. Here, we present the analysis of five occultations and two eclipses observed from Brazil during 2007. For the reduction of the CCD images, we developed a digital coronagraphic method that removed the planet's scattered light around the satellites. A simple geometric model of the occultation/eclipse was used to fit the observed light curves. Dynamical quantities such as the impact parameter, the relative speed, and the central time of the event were then obtained with precisions of 7.6 km, 0.18 km s-1, and 2.9 s, respectively. These results can be further used to improve the parameters of the dynamical theories of the main Uranus satellites.

We determine accurate positions of the main satellites of Uranus: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. Positions of Uranus, as derived from those of these satellites, are also determined. The observational period spans from 1992 to 2011. All runs were made at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, Brazil. We used the software called Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images Automatically (PRAIA) to minimise (digital coronography) the influence of the scattered light of Uranus on the astrometric measurements and to determine accurate positions of the main satellites. The positions of Uranus were then indirectly determined by computing the mean differences between the observed and ephemeris positions of these satellites. A series of numerical filters was applied to filter out spurious data. These filters are mostly based on the comparison between the positions of Oberon with those of the other satellites and on the offsets as given by the differences between the observed and ephemeris positions of all satellites. We have, for the overall offsets of the five satellites, -29 (+/-63) mas in right ascension and -27 (+/-46) mas in declination. For the overall difference between the offsets of Oberon and those of the other satellites, we have +3 (+/-30) mas in right ascension and -2 (+/-28) mas in declination. Ephemeris positions for the satellites were determined from DE432+ura111. Comparisons using other modern ephemerides for the solar system -INPOP13c- and for the motion of the satellites -NOE-7-2013- were also made. They confirm that the largest contribution to the offsets we find comes from the motion of the barycenter of the Uranus system around the barycenter of the solar system, as given by the planetary ephemerides. We report the results of two multi-chord stellar occultations by the dwarf planet (1) Ceres that were observed from Brazil on 2010 August 17, and from the USA on 2013 October 25. Four positive detections were obtained for the 2010 occultation, and nine for the 2013 occultation. Elliptical models were adjusted to the observed chords to obtain Ceres' size and shape. Two limb fitting solutions were studied for each event. The first one is a nominal solution with an indeterminate polar aspect angle. The second one was constrained by the pole coordinates as given by Drummond et al. Assuming a Maclaurin spheroid, we determine an equatorial diameter of 972 $\pm$ 6 km and an apparent oblateness of 0.08 $\pm$ 0.03 as our best solution. These results are compared to all available size and shape determinations for Ceres made so far, and shall be confirmed by the NASA's Dawn space mission., 9 pages, 6 figures. The irregular satellites of the giant planets are believed to have been captured during the evolution of the solar system. Knowing their physical parameters, such as size, density, and albedo is important for constraining where they came from and how they were captured. The best way to obtain these parameters are observations in situ by spacecrafts or from stellar occultations by the objects. Both techniques demand that the orbits are well known. We aimed to obtain good astrometric positions of irregular satellites to improve their orbits and ephemeris. We identified and reduced observations of several irregular satellites from three databases containing more than 8000 images obtained between 1992 and 2014 at three sites (Observat\'orio do Pico dos Dias, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, and European Southern Observatory - La Silla). We used the software PRAIA (Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images Automatically) to make the astrometric reduction of the CCD frames. The UCAC4 catalog represented the International Celestial Reference System in the reductions. Identification of the satellites in the frames was done through their ephemerides as determined from the SPICE/NAIF kernels. Some procedures were followed to overcome missing or incomplete information (coordinates, date), mostly for the older images. We managed to obtain more than 6000 positions for 18 irregular satellites: 12 of Jupiter, 4 of Saturn, 1 of Uranus (Sycorax), and 1 of Neptune (Nereid). For some satellites the number of obtained positions is more than 50\% of what was used in earlier orbital numerical integrations. Comparison of our positions with recent JPL ephemeris suggests there are systematic errors in the orbits for some of the irregular satellites. Combining stellar occultation observations probing Pluto's atmosphere from 1988 to 2013, and models of energy balance between Pluto's surface and atmosphere, we find the preferred models are consistent with Pluto retaining a collisional atmosphere throughout its 248-year orbit. The occultation results show an increasing atmospheric pressure with time in the current epoch, a trend present only in models with a high thermal inertia and a permanent N2 ice cap at Pluto's north rotational pole., This work was supported in part by NASA Planetary Astronomy Grant NNX12AG25G.

In this work we aim to study if the variability in the absolute magnitude of Chariklo and the temporal variation of the spectral ice feature, even its disappearance in 2007, can be explained by an icy ring system whose aspect angle changes with time. We modeled the light reflected by a system as the one described above to explain the variations on the absolute magnitude of Chariklo and its rings. Using X-Shooter at VLT we obtained a new reflectance spectra, here we compared this new set of data with the ones available in the literature. We showed how the water ice feature is visible in 2013 in accordance with the ring configuration, which had an opening angle of nearly 34$^o$ in 2013. Finally we also used models of the scattering of light to fit the visible and near-infrared spectra showing different characteristic to obtain information on the composition of Chariklo and its rings. {We showed that past absolute photometry of Chariklo from the literature and new photometric data that we obtained in 2013 can be explained by a ring of particles whose opening angle changes as a function of time. We used the two possible pole solutions for the ring system and found that only one of them, $\alpha$=151.30$\pm0.5$, $\delta=41.48\pm0.2$ $^o$ ($\lambda=137.9\pm0.5$, $\beta=27.7\pm0.2$ $^o$) provides the right variation of the aspect angle with time to explain the photometry, whereas the other possible pole solution fails to explain the photometry. From spectral modeling, using the result on the pole solution, we derived the composition of Chariklo surface and of that of the rings. Chariklo surface is composed by nearly 60% of amorphous carbon, 30% of silicates and 10\% of organics, no water ice was found on the surface.
