A joalheria contemporânea caracteriza-se por um maior apelo a atributos de sustentabilidade, voltando sua atenção às necessidades atuais. No tratamento de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos uma das principais questões associadas é a falta de interesse na comercialização de determinados materiais triados, que possuem valor comercial quase nulo. Desse modo, aumentar o valor de resíduos pode ser uma ferramenta para possibilitar sua utilização como material secundário, prática que deve ser estimulada no ensino de disciplinas associadas a cursos de Design. Este artigo abrange a temática de experimentações projetuais com foco em sustentabilidade e voltadas ao ensino de joalheria. São apresentados três projetos desenvolvidos por alunos que englobam a utilização de materiais problemáticos, i.e., que não possuem interesse comercial e seriam desperdiçados, mesmo após a coleta seletiva. Os projetos incluem os processos de definição do problema, pesquisa e experimentação, para o desenvolvimento de joias incluindo como destaque: vidro, alumínio proveniente de cápsulas de café e madeira com tingimento natural. Os exemplos demonstram que práticas de projetos sustentáveis são possíveis de serem executadas mesmo artesanalmente, e podem trazer benefícios diretos ao valorizarem rejeitos.

Abstract Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with systemic toxicity, represented by changes in biomarkers associated with mood episodes, leading to neurological damage, which may reflect cognitive functions and functionality and the progression of the disease. We aimed to analyze the effect of four biomarkers, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBA-RS), related to oxidative stress in BD and to correlate them with cognitive functions and functionality. We studied 50 bipolar types I/II patients in the euthymic phase, which was divided into two subgroups with 25 patients each (≤ 3 years and ≥ 10 years of diagnosis, from the first episode of mania) and 25 control patients. To analyze frontal cognitive functions and functionality, we used the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) tests, respectively. The scores of the FAST and FAB tests showed an increase and decrease respectively, in both bipolar groups, when compared to the control group, demonstrating impairment in cognitive functions and functionality since the disease onset. In addition, changes occurred in all six domains of the FAST test, and in four domains of the FAB test in bipolar patients when compared to the control group. Regarding oxidative stress biomarkers, we did not find changes in SOD and GSH-Px activities; however, a significant increase in CAT activity and lipid peroxidation was observed in both groups, although the patients were euthymic and medicated. These results allow us to raise the hypothesis that since the beginning of the disease, the euthymic bipolar patient has presented a level of oxidative stress, which gets worse with the evolution of the disease, promoting impairments in the frontal cognitive functions and functionality gradually.

A recuperação dos resíduos sólidos urbanos é uma questão de importância global e, no Brasil, é totalmente dependente do destino que o material terá após o descarte. De maneira geral, se o resíduo é separado corretamente e possui interesse comercial, ele pode ser reciclado; caso contrário é desperdiçado, levando a problemas ambientais, econômicos e sociais. Muitas vezes esses materiais são amplamente considerados como problemáticos, devido às suas óbvias dificuldades em realizar sua reciclagem, seja por motivos técnicos ou sanitários. Entretanto, um grande grupo de resíduos problemáticos tem passado despercebido pelo público, por muitas vezes não ser considerado como tal. Este artigo aborda a questão dos resíduos “invisíveis”, materiais que, embora sejam tecnicamente fáceis de serem reciclados, não possuem interesse comercial e são prematuramente descartados. São abordados exemplos principais desses materiais bem como são apresentadas formas sobre como o Design pode contribuir para valorizá-los e reinseri-los em novos ciclos produtivos e, por fim, é discutido como isso pode impactar a sociedade como um todo.

Autonomy and unmanned systems have evolved significantly in recent decades, becoming a key routine component for various sectors and domains as an intrinsic sign of their improvement, the ocean not being an exception. This paper shows the transition from the research concept to the commercial product and related services for Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV). Note that it has not always been easy in most cases due to the limitations of the technology, business, and policy framework. An overview of current trends in USV technology looking for a baseline to understand the sector where some experiences of the authors are shown in this work. The analysis presented shows a multidisciplinary approach to the field. USV's capabilities and applications today include a wide range of operations and services aimed at meeting the specific needs of the maritime sector. This important consideration for USV has yet to be fully addressed, but progress is being made.

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) belongs to the steroid receptor subfamily of nuclear receptors. MR is a transcription factor key in regulating blood pressure and mineral homeostasis. In addition, it plays an important role in a broad range of biological and pathological conditions, greatly expanding its interest as a pharmacological target. Non-steroidal MR antagonists (MRAs) are of particular interest to avoid side effects and achieve tissue-specific modulation of the receptor. The 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) ring has been identified as an appropriate scaffold to develop non-steroidal MRAs. We report the identification of a novel series of 1,4-DHP that has been guided by structure-based drug design, focusing on the less explored DHP position 2. Interestingly, substituents at this position might interfere with MR helix H12 disposition, which is essential for the recruitment of co-regulators. Several of the newly synthesized 1,4-DHPs show interesting properties as MRAs and have a good selectivity profile. These 1,4-DHPs promote MR nuclear translocation with less efficiency than the natural agonist aldosterone, which explains, at least in part, its antagonist character. Molecular dynamic studies are suggestive of several derivatives interfering with the disposition of H12 in the agonist-associated conformation, and thus, they might stabilize an MR conformation unable to recruit co-activators.

Biodiversity promotion activities, such as ecological restoration, are recognized as instruments to arrest and mitigate the diminishing health of ecosystems. The restoration of fauna is a fundamental component of this process but, despite this, there are few studies that compile and discuss the knowledge produced on this topic. Hence, by seeking a general understanding of what we currently know about terrestrial invertebrates as bioindicators in restored ecosystems, the present work sought to organize knowledge in such a way as to indicate gaps and opportunities for both researchers and restorers. To this end, we searched for topics associated with restoration ecology in the Web of Science database, identifying which invertebrate groups have been studied in relation to intrinsic characteristics of ecological intervention, including type of biome, type of disturbance, restoration technique, age, project size, and indices used. We found 154 studies published between 1995 and 2018: 93.5% of which were from 2002 onwards. We detected a growing number of studies and a tendency to evaluate functional groups. Moreover, there was a high concentration of studies within a few taxonomic groups, notably Hymenoptera (Formicidae), Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. Many of the restoration scenarios are poorly studied, for example, in temperate coniferous forests or taiga biomes, previous disturbances caused by pollution or urbanization, under certain restoration techniques such as brushwood transposition, and investigations in large or old areas. There was also a paucity of information concerning community or population-level measures of restoration success, such as the structure of communities, biomass, and dominance. We discuss some consequences of these knowledge gaps. Finally, we indicate which taxonomic groups have been evaluated in relation to each restoration characteristic considered, resulting in guidance for those wishing to engage in research and monitoring of such organisms during the restoration process.

This article, a piece of a bigger research about interracial families, aims to describe the ways in which black, black history and black ancestry have been denied in the discourse of interracial families. For this understanding we present the case study of two families with the intention of thinking about the place of the race in these dynamics. The results obtained in the bigger research pointed out that family is a privilegedinstitution for the development of strategiesagainst racial violence expriencied in society on a larger scale, but also the place where it is possible to legitimate racist experiences and race violence. And, within these experiences, it was possible to realize that the psychosocial mechanism of denial is one of several ways of negotiating the conflicts and racial tensions that are enunciated within these families.

A metodologia da biônica parte da observação em diferentes escalas de materiais naturais e a consequente caracterização e aplicação dos ensinamentos da natureza em projetos de design e engenharia. Dentre os materiais naturais com propriedades mecânicas interessantes, encontra-se o bambu, pertencente ao grupo das gramíneas lenhosas, e caracterizado pela grande razão resistência por densidade. Dentre as características que conferem a resistência da planta encontra-se sua microestrutura, formada por feixes fibrosos longitudinais que envolvem elementos condutores ao longo do caule. A anatomia vegetal diz respeito ao estudo da microestrutura de plantas, onde são utilizados métodos clássicos de secionamento em amostras para observação microscópica dos tecidos e células constituintes. O designer deve estar na vanguarda de tecnologias para colaborar com o desenvolvimento de novas técnicas e aplicá-las na criação de novos produtos. Com o avanço das tecnologias 3D, novas técnicas de observação têm surgido para estudo de materiais, como a Microtomografia Computadorizada de Raios X (μCT) e a Modelagem por Deposição de Material Fundido (FDM). Nesse sentido, este trabalho apresenta os fundamentos básicos das técnicas de μCT e FDM, visando à caracterização da microestrutura interna do bambu. As técnicas são descritas e utilizadas para observação da microestrutura da planta, incluindo secionamento 3D do modelo virtual da amostra, obtido pelas imagens da μCT, e na representação das células constituintes. Por fim, o estudo apresenta o desenvolvimento de dois modelos físicos, impressos em FDM em escala 25:1, das regiões correspondentes aos feixes de fibras e aos elementos condutores. Os resultados permitiram visualizar em 3D a microestrutura da planta, auxiliando na compreensão de sua resistência, para aplicações em biônica. O estudo também apresentou a possibilidade de unir técnicas de μCT e FDM na geração de modelos virtuais e físicos para a observação aplicada à anatomia vegetal.

A tecnologia de gravação e corte a laser CO2 é um dos principais processos de fabricação da atualidade, unindo versatilidade, precisão e velocidade, sendo uma importante ferramenta para o design de joias contemporâneas. A utilização do equipamento depende de diversas variáveis relacionadas aos materiais utilizados ou aos projetos executados. Contudo, a obtenção dos melhores parâmetros frequentemente é realizada de forma empírica, tornando a padronização imprecisa e prejudicando a qualidade das peças. Na joalheria contemporânea, é essencial a busca por peças com grande nível de acabamento e que mesclem a utilização de materiais nobres com alternativas não-convencionais. Esta pesquisa trata do desenvolvimento de um método para a obtenção de parâmetros ideais para a utilização da tecnologia de gravação e corte a laser CO2, com desenhos vetoriais, através de etapas que considerem as variáveis do projeto, do material e do equipamento do tipo galvanométrico. Para aplicação, o método foi empregado no desenvolvimento de joias utilizando-se borracha EPDM com prata. Foram conduzidos testes de aplicação de velocidades e número de passadas de feixe laser, determinando a configuração ideal para utilização deste processo no material. Imagens analisadas via MEV auxiliaram na avaliação dos efeitos do feixe laser no elastômero, como a zona de abrangência térmica e a efetividade do corte. Com um método para obtenção dos parâmetros para boa definição de corte e uniformidade do traço, essa pesquisa objetiva auxiliar estudantes, profissionais e indústrias na execução de seus projetos.
