Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of reconfiguration of Astron and L&S 13.8 KV feeders of Angeles Power Incorporated (API) - Angeles Electric Corporation (AEC) substation, for the improvement of operation ability of the system and consistency of power supply of Bacolor load or Pampanga Electric Cooperative II. The three-phase balanced load flow analysis has been performed for different cases to assess the worth of reconfiguration. There are four cases that were presented for comparative analysis that were involved in the study. Line flow, node voltage, and system losses were analyzed before and after the reconfiguration based on off- peak and peak conditions. It also quantifies the allocated line losses of Bacolor, which will be carried out by API instead on AEC. Based on the results of the study, conclusions were created and possible and practical reconfigurations were recommended.

Abstract

Muscle fiber types are classified based on contractile speed and type of metabolism. Fast-contracting fibers involve mainly glycolytic-based metabolism, whereas slow-contracting fibers involve a more oxidative type of energy metabolism. The relationship between expression of the genes controlling these functional characteristics and their relative protein abundance in porcine muscle is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the expression of adult myosin heavy-chain (MyHC) genes and their corresponding protein content in various porcine muscles. Moreover, changes in expression of 2 genes involved in energy metabolism (glycogen synthase and citrate synthase) were determined on muscles varying in MyHC. Using real-time PCR, the relative transcript abundance was determined for the adult MyHC isoforms (types I, IIA, IIX, and IIB), glycogen synthase, and citrate synthase in the masseter (MAS), diaphragm, longissimus, cutaneous trunci, and red and white semitendinosus muscles of 7 pigs. Each muscle was subjected to SDS-PAGE analyses to determine the relative abundance of each MyHC. The relative transcript abundance of type IIB MyHC was greatest (P < 0.05) in the longissimus, white semitendinosus, and cutaneous trunci muscles, whereas type I MyHC expression was greatest (P < 0.05) in the MAS, diaphragm, and red semitendinosus muscles. Glycogen synthase gene expression was least in the MAS (P < 0.01) but exhibited a pattern similar to MyHC IIB expression across muscles. Citrate synthase transcript abundance, however, varied (P < 0.05) independently of MyHC gene expression. Expression of types I and IIB MyHC was correlated with their tissue protein content ([R.sup.2] = 0.76 and 0.78, respectively), whereas type IIA and X MyHC expression did not correlate with the SDS-PAGE-determined protein content. These data show differences in MyHC gene expression across various porcine muscles and suggest that expression of these genes is reflective of the type of myosin contained within the muscle. Moreover, these data show that expression of energyspecific genes differs greatly across porcine muscles with different functions. Key words: myosin heavy chain, porcine, skeletal muscle

Abstract

Neonates born very preterm (before 32 weeks’ gestational age), are a significant public health concern because of their high-risk of mortality and life-long disability. In addition, caring for very preterm neonates can be expensive, both during their initial hospitalization and their long-term cost of permanent impairments. To address these issues, national and regional neonatal networks around the world collect and analyse data from their constituents to identify trends in outcomes, and conduct benchmarking, audit and research. Improving neonatal outcomes and reducing health care costs is a global problem that can be addressed using collaborative approaches to assess practice variation between countries, conduct research and implement evidence-based practices. The International Network for Evaluating Outcomes (iNeo) of neonates was established in 2013 with the goal of improving outcomes for very preterm neonates through international collaboration and comparisons. To date, 10 national or regional population-based neonatal networks/datasets participate in iNeo collaboration. The initiative now includes data on >200,000 very preterm neonates and has conducted important epidemiological studies evaluating outcomes, variations and trends. The collaboration has also surveyed >320 neonatal units worldwide to learn about variations in practices, healthcare service delivery, and physical, environmental and manpower related factors and support services for parents. The iNeo collaboration serves as a strong international platform for Neonatal-Perinatal health services research that facilitates international data sharing, capacity building, and global efforts to improve very preterm neonate care.

Abstract

Background: Rates of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and ROP treatment vary between neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Neonatal care practices, including oxygen saturation (SpO(2)) targets and criteria for the screening and treatment of ROP, are potential contributing factors to the variations. Objectives: To survey variations in SpO(2) targets in 2015 (and whether there had been recent changes) and criteria for ROP screening and treatment across the networks of the International Network for Evaluating Outcomes in Neonates (iNeo). Methods: Online prepiloted questionnaires on treatment practices for preterm infants were sent to the directors of 390 NICUs in 10 collaborating iNeo networks. Nine questions were asked and the results were summarized and compared. Results: Overall, 329/390 (84%) NICUs responded, and a majority (60%) recently made changes in upper and lower SpO(2) target limits, with the median set higher than previously by 2-3% in 8 of 10 networks. Abstract

The use of different definitions for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has been an ongoing challenge. We searched papers published in English from 2010 and 2015 reporting BPD as an outcome, together with studies that compared BPD definitions between 1978 and 2015. We found that the incidence of BPD ranged from 6% to 57%, depending on the definition chosen, and that studies that investigated correlations with long-term pulmonary and/or neurosensory outcomes reported moderate-to-low predictive values regardless of the BPD criteria. Conclusion: A comprehensive and evidence-based definition for BPD needs to be developed for benchmarking and prognostic use.

Abstract

Purpose of Study: To review the literature on heteroresistance to fluconazole (FLC) and investigate the level of heteroresistance to FLC (LHF), we analyzed 100 clinical and environmental Brazilian Cryptococcus strains. Recent Findings: Heteroresistance is a phenomenon described as the emergence of resistant subpopulation cells within a single susceptible strain that can tolerate higher concentrations of fluconazole above the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) level. Summary: We found lower FLC-MICs (0.12-64 mg/L) than LHF (8-128 mg/L). Highly heteroresistant adapted subpopulations (256 mg/L) was found in minority (9%) strains, but importantly, 33% showed low FLC-MIC (8 mg/L). We concluded for similar LHF in both species, but higher LHF in clinical strains in comparison to environmental ones. Our findings stressed that the LHF is not correlated to species and pretty is strain-dependent and alert about high heteroresistant subpopulations that hardly reverts to the original LHF even upon the removal of drug pressure. 27. The American political economy and monopoly capital: A reinterpretation

Abstract

In this thesis, the American political economy is presented as a negation of the two-stage theory of capitalist development advanced by theorists like Hilferding, Steindl and Baran and Sweezy. Various cases from the American economy are presented to contradict the argument that with the emergence of large-scale industry competition among capitals is eliminated or highly restricted. The experience of the American automobile industry confirms Marx's argument that competition and the concentration and centralization of capital are not opposites where the emergence of one entails the disappearance of the other. General Motors' battle to enter the high-volume, low-cost market dominated by Ford is a good example. In the later decades of the twenty-century foreign firms, e.g., European, Japanese and later a few Korean companies began to compete effectively and to challenge the market dominance of the American marques. American financial markets are another case presented in this thesis to negate the contention that with the emergence of large-scale industry a new stage in the development of capitalism emerges as competition is eliminated. For Baran and Sweezy, and others after Hilferding, the belief is that large-scale businesses have enough power to control markets without the aid of finance capital. This downplays the importance of the stock market as a competitor to the banks and the emergence of other sources of finance capital, e.g., venture capital, mutual funds and pension funds, which represent new competitors to traditional forms of finance. Traditionally, the American economy has been presented as a case in support of the theory of monopoly capital. This thesis' unique contribution to the literature is to show that the American economy contradicts the arguments of the exponents of the theory of monopoly capital. The findings presented in this thesis lead to the conclusion that so serious are the flaws on which these theorists based their critique of Marx's theory

Se analiza la situación de las ayudas económicas que se concedían a los jóvenes universitarios graduados que emigraban a otros países para iniciar investigaciones o continuar sus estudios fuera. Se examinan los problemas que la práctica plantea cuando se trata de adjudicar las pensiones de estudio. Se plantea la medición de la capacidad intelectual a través del certificado de estudios, para comprobar el rendimiento escolar durante los años de graduación por medio de las calificaciones obtenidas en las asignaturas de la carrera. Igualmente se señala el desconocimiento que existe entre el profesor y el alumno y los alumnos libres. También se comenta la necesidad de que exista una vía por la que se pueda demostrar la necesidad económica del alumno que precisa una beca. Por último, se ofrecen una serie de soluciones posibles: la mejora del procedimiento de selección a través de una criba por expediente académico y por test de inteligencia y de personalidad y también a través de una serie de ejercicios prácticos en los que se demuestre el conocimiento de las materias acerca de las que han de versar sus investigaciones. Además, se apunta la creación de una Inspección que tuviera contactos con el alumno y la familia para comprobar la deficiencia de su situación económica real y así poder beneficiarse de becas y plazas gratuitas limitando los fraudes. Introduction Secretory phospholipase A2 regulates surfactant catabolism and inflammatory cascade. This enzyme is correlated with compliance, oxygenation and major outcomes in various forms of acute respiratory failure. Steroids inhibit secretory phospholipase A2 in cell culture and are widely used to boost surfactant production before preterm delivery. No data are available about the effect of antenatal steroids on secretory phospholipase A2 in the offspring: we aimed to study this effect in a rat model of preterm lung. Material and methods Fifteen pregnant Wistar rats were randomized to receive betamethasone, dexamethasone or placebo at 20 and 21 days gestation. Newborn rats were supported for 8 h and then sacrificed: lung tissue was analysed for secretory phospholipase A2 expression and activity, inflammatory mediators and protein content. Abstract

CD226 plays a vital role in natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity, interacting with its ligands CD112 and CD155 to initiate immune synapse formation, primarily through leukocyte function-associated-1 (LFA-1). Our study examined the role of CD226 in NK cell surveillance of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). NK cells in patients with AML had lower expression of CD226. CRISPR-Cas9 deletion of CD226 led to reduced LFA-1 recruitment, poor synapse formation, and decreased NK cell anti-leukemic activity. Engineering NK cells to express a chimeric antigen receptor targeting the AML antigen CD38 (CAR38) could overcome the need for CD226 to establish strong immune synapses. LFA-1 blockade reduced CAR38 NK cell activity, and this depended on the CD38 expression levels of AML cells. This suggests parallel but potentially cooperative roles for LFA-1 and CAR38 in synapse formation.
