Objectives: Recently, a profilometry-based method for measuring toothpaste dentin abrasivity has been proposed to be equivalent to the traditional radiotracer RDA (relative dentin abrasion) procedure. This review outlines the findings and comparative assessment of laboratory studies used to measure the abrasivity of commercially available whitening dentifrices on human dentin. Traditional radiotracer and profilometry RDA-PE (Profilometry Equivalent) methods were assessed, with the objective of determining how they compare, and also to learn if the two techniques yield RDA values that are consistent with each other, specifically in ranking and potential for discrimination of three commercially available silica-based products. Chosen were regular toothpaste and two whitening dentifrices having abrasive properties against dentin ranging from medium to high., Methods: Dentin specimens underwent standard preparation, preconditioning, and abrasivity testing according to the ISO 11609 requirements for radiotracer method and RDA-PE. Three test dentifrices were used, each product containing various abrasive and polyphosphate agents, namely: Whitening Product A: Hydrated silica with disodium pyrophosphate (Crest® 3D Luxe); Product B: Hydrated silica (Crest® Cavity Protection); and Whitening Product C: Hydrated silica with tetrasodium pyrophosphate (Colgate® Ultrabrite Advanced Whitening). The products were chosen since they gave a range of RDA values from mid to high when compared with an ADA reference material that is given a value of 100., Results: The data were subjected to statistical and SNK (Student-Newman-Keuls) analyses. Both procedures yielded numerical RDA values that permitted a ranking of the three test dentifrices. However, there was no direct correlation of the RDA values obtained by profilometry with those from the conventional radiotracer method. Significantly, one dentifrice rated as most abrasive using the radiotracer method was rated as moderately abrasive using profilometry. Additionally, there was loss of statistical significance and discrimination between products with RDA-PE., Conclusions: Given the lack of agreement between radiotracer and profilometry for the products tested in this study,it would appear that the RDA-PE method may not be equivalent to the traditional RDA radiotracer method, specifically in the higher abrasivity range., Competing Interests: Drs.Prencipe and Vandeven are employees of the Colgate-Palmolive Company. There are twice as many suicides as homicides in the United States, and the suicide rate is rising. Suicides increased 12% between 1999 and 2009. Mental health professionals often treat suicidal patients, and suicide occurs even among patients who are seeking treatment or are currently in treatment. Despite these facts, training of most mental health professionals in the assessment and management of suicidal patients is surprisingly limited. The extant literature regarding the frequency with which mental health professionals encounter suicidal patients is reviewed, as is the prevalence of training in suicide risk assessment and management. Most importantly, six recommendations are made to address the longstanding insufficient training within the mental health professions regarding the assessment and management of suicidal patients., (© 2012 The American Association of Suicidology.)

Research shows that social work graduate programs offer little education in suicide prevention and intervention, yet social workers' experiences and attitudes regarding suicide education are unknown. This Web-based survey of 598 social workers found that almost all respondents had worked with at least one suicidal client, but most received little, if any, training in suicide prevention or intervention while in graduate school. Respondents largely viewed their social work program's training in suicide prevention and intervention as inadequate. Implications for social work education and practice are discussed.

The continuing increase in cancer rates among women in the United States is forcing more men to experience the impact of breast cancer on their relationships. Using 71 male partners of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, this study assessed how dyadic coping strategies affected men's adjustment to their partners' illness. While their partners were undergoing treatment, participants completed standardized instruments that measured emotional well-being, illness intrusiveness, and dyadic coping styles. Regression analysis revealed significant associations between coping styles and illness intrusiveness. In addition, depression predisposed men to poorer adjustment and affected their coping patterns. The findings emphasize that social workers must work with patients and partners to develop positive couple coping strategies. Practice implications for social workers are addressed.
