Monitoring vegetation moisture conditions is paramount to better understand and assess drought impacts on vegetation, enhance crop yield predictions, and improve ecosystem models. Passive microwave remote sensing allows retrievals of the vegetation optical depth (VOD; [unitless]), which is directly proportional to the vegetation water content (VWC; in units of water mass per unit area [kg/m2]). However, VWC is largely dependent on the dry biomass and structure imprints on the VOD signal. Previously, statistical models have been used to isolate the water component from the biomass and structure components. Physically-based approaches have not yet been proposed for this goal. In this study, we present a multi-sensor semi-physical approach to retrieve the vegetation moisture from the VOD and express it as Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC [%]; the percentage of water mass per dry biomass unit). The study is performed in the western United States for the period April 2015 – December 2018. There, in situ LFMC samples are available for assessment. We rely on a VOD model based on vegetation height data from GEDI/Sentinel-2 and radar backscatter from Sentinel-1, which account for the biomass and structure components. Vegetation moisture is retrieved at L-, X- and Ku-bands by minimizing the difference between the modeled VOD and the VOD estimates from SMAP (L-band) and AMSR-2 (X- and Ku-band) satellites. Results show that the LFMC retrievals are independent of canopy height, land cover, and radar backscatter, demonstrating the capability of the proposed algorithm to separate water dynamics from the biomass/structure component in VOD. LFMC estimates at X- and Ku-bands reproduce well the expected spatio-temporal dynamics of in situ LFMC. Results show good agreement with in situ at a regional scale, with Pearson's correlations (r) between in situ LFMC samples and LFMC estimates of 0.64 (Ku-band), 0.60 (X-band) and 0.47 (L-band). Vegetation optical depth (VOD) depends on the water, structure, and biomass of vegetation. Here, we propose a multi-sensor approach to isolate the water component from the VOD and to retrieve gravimetric vegetation moisture (m g ) in the western United States. The approach estimates VOD from radar and LiDAR data and minimizes the differences between these estimates and SMAP/AMSR2 VOD observations. This minimization allows to obtain the best fitting value of m g with help of a dielectric model. Results are consistent both in space (drier vegetation in arid areas) and time (drier vegetation in drier months). The mg estimates are in the same range than in situ mg data, with some underestimation (bias ~ -0.07 kg/kg). Statistical results are reasonable (r ~ 0.45, RMSE =0.10 kg/kg), yet the different spatial and temporal representation of in situ and remote measurements have an impact in the direct comparisons. Our results highlight the potential for developing new vegetation moisture datasets based on VOD decomposition., The work of D. Abstract When organic peat soils are sufficiently dry, they become flammable. In Southeast Asian peatlands, widespread deforestation and associated drainage create dry conditions that, when coupled with El Niño-driven drought, result in catastrophic fire events that release large amounts of carbon and deadly smoke to the atmosphere. While the effects of anthropogenic degradation on peat moisture and fire risk have been extensively demonstrated, climate change impacts to peat flammability are poorly understood. These impacts are likely to be mediated primarily through changes in soil moisture. Here, we used neural networks (trained on data from the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite) to model soil moisture as a function of climate, degradation, and location. The neural networks were forced with regional climate model projections for 1985–2005 and 2040–2060 climate under RCP8.5 forcing to predict changes in soil moisture. We find that reduced precipitation and increased evaporative demand will lead to median soil moisture decreases about half as strong as those observed during recent El Niño droughts in 2015 and 2019. Based on previous studies, such reductions may be expected to accelerate peat carbon emissions. Our results also suggest that soil moisture in degraded areas with less tree cover may be more sensitive to climate change than in other land use types, motivating urgent peatland restoration. Climate change may play an important role in future soil moisture regimes and by extension, future peat fire in Southeast Asian peatlands.

Vegetation cover creates competing effects on land surface temperature: it typically cools through enhancing energy dissipation and warms via decreasing surface albedo. Global vegetation has been previously found to overall net cool land surfaces with cooling contributions from temperate and tropical vegetation and warming contributions from boreal vegetation. Recent studies suggest that dryland vegetation across the tropics strongly contributes to this global net cooling feedback. However, observation-based vegetation-temperature interaction studies have been limited in the tropics, especially in their widespread drylands. Theoretical considerations also call into question the ability of dryland vegetation to strongly cool the surface under low water availability. Here, we use satellite observations to investigate how tropical vegetation cover influences the surface energy balance. We find that while increased vegetation cover would impart net cooling feedbacks across the tropics, net vegetal cooling effects are subdued in drylands. Using observations, we determine that dryland plants have less ability to cool the surface due to their cooling pathways being reduced by aridity, overall less efficient dissipation of turbulent energy, and their tendency to strongly increase solar radiation absorption. As a result, while proportional greening across the tropics would create an overall biophysical cooling feedback, dryland tropical vegetation reduces the overall tropical surface cooling magnitude by at least 14%, instead of enhancing cooling as suggested by previous global studies.

Soil moisture and vegetation optical depth (VOD; related to vegetation water content) retrieved from SMAP and SMOS satellites are widely used for a range of hydrosphere and biosphere applications. However, while soil moisture has been globally well-validated, VOD validation has been sparse. Furthermore, simultaneously retrieval of these parameters results in uncertainties both individually in soil moisture and VOD retrievals as well as in compensation between the parameters. Here, we show global locations where soil moisture and VOD retrievals will have lower uncertainty, based on complementary brightness temperature information content and signal-to-noise ratio metrics. In these same locations, we show that error still propagates more into VOD. However, using VOD regularization algorithms, this error is greatly reduced, especially at sub-weekly timescales where algorithmic error can be most apparent. Despite these regularization approaches that reduce errors, there are yet vast differences in available global regularized retrievals originating from different algorithmic choices. © 2022 IEEE., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Soil moisture impacts the biosphere–atmosphere exchange of CO2 and CH4 and plays an important role in the terrestrial carbon cycle. A better representation of soil moisture would improve coupled carbon–water dynamics in terrestrial ecosystem models and could potentially improve model estimates of large-scale carbon fluxes and climate feedbacks. Here, we investigate using soil moisture observations from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission to inform simulated carbon fluxes in the global terrestrial ecosystem model LPJ-wsl. Results suggest that the direct insertion of SMAP reduces the bias in simulated soil moisture at in situ measurement sites by 40%, with a greater improvement at temperate sites. A wavelet analysis between the model and measurements from 26 FLUXNET sites suggests that the assimilated run modestly reduces the bias of simulated carbon fluxes for boreal and subtropical sites at 1–2-month time scales. At regional scales, SMAP soil moisture can improve the estimated responses of CO2 and CH4 fluxes to extreme events such as the 2018 European drought and the 2019 rainfall event in the Sudd (Southern Sudan) wetlands. The simulated improvements to land–surface carbon fluxes using the direct insertion of SMAP are shown across a variety of timescales, which suggests the potential of SMAP soil moisture in improving the model representation of carbon–water coupling.
