8. Reflections on the Evaluation of a Teacher Education Program: The University of Houston Experience. Current Issues.

Abstract

The experience of the University of Houston in evaluating its teacher education program and in conducting followup studies of its graduates is recounted. A description is given of the problems encountered in planning, developing, and implementing a competency based program, and the subsequent evaluation procedures used to validate the program. The gradual evolution of a methodology for conducting follow-up studies is described, and insights gleaned from two successful follow-up studies are discussed. Suggestions are offered for determining the salient points upon which program evaluation should be based. The appendixes include a list of the twelve characteristics of Houston's competency based teacher education program, and the sixteen generic teaching competencies adopted for the program. (JD)

22. Problems and Perspectives of Beginning Teachers: A Follow-Up Study.

Abstract

Beginning teachers were studied from the completion of student teaching through the first nine weeks of instruction as professional teachers. Data was collected at the end of student teaching, the end of school orientation, and at the end of the third and ninth weeks of teaching. In addition, they reported their concerns and problems and the means they employed for coping with them. The changing priority of concerns is recorded in this report, along with the coping strategies most frequently used. Results revealed a pervading sense of isolation during the first weeks of teaching, and a realization that their perceptions of teaching, up to the time they began working with pupils, had been distorted. Talking with others, preferably other teachers, was the main coping technique used for relieving anxiety. Two suggestions are made for improving teacher training and induction: teacher education programs must consider the provision of a year of internship, and schools should provide well organized internal support systems for beginning teachers. 23. Challenges in Professional Development and Outreach.

Abstract

This paper discusses what colleges and universities can do to improve the capacity of the public schools to deliver quality education in social studies and other areas to America's children. The quality of public education can be improved by changing the system for delivering education and by improving the quality of teaching. Colleges and universities can give direction and provide leadership for the development of both these changes through research, teaching, and service. First, higher education institutions can conduct research to establish the efficacy of new delivery systems such as mini-computers for education and then help incorporate these new or improved systems into the existing school patterns. Secondly, better teacher training programs are needed. Colleges must insist on extended periods for teacher training, pushing for fifth and sixth year programs. Also, more teacher training needs to take place in the real school setting. Thirdly, recalling how social studies educators in Texas were unable recently to stop the passage of a bill that abolished social studies textbooks in the primary grades, the author stresses the pressing need for social studies educators to join together to provide a model for social studies nationwide. Social studies educators must communicate what they stand for, devise teacher training programs, and direct their research and service efforts toward implementing that model. They must collectively agree on what social studies is supposed to do for students in the schools and decide how teachers of social studies must behave if they are to produce those outcomes. 24. Developing Social Studies Competencies: Directions for the Future.

Abstract

This paper discusses an approach which used the development principles of competency based education as guidelines for the training of social studies teachers at the University of Houston. Competencies identified for training social studies teachers will be either generic or specialized. Generic competencies reflect those teaching behaviors considered essential for all teachers to master so that they can teach their subject within the context of the entire school curriculum. Specialized competencies for the social studies can then build and extend these generic skills and respond to the unique dimensions of social studies education. The paper lists the 16 generic competencies which all students preparing to teach at the University of Houston are expected to demonstrate. In developing the social studies competencies, the Houston faculty first established assumptions, for example, "optimal learning occurs when the future teacher is presented with a model of the teacher he or she is expected to become." Goals which serve as the parameters of the social studies program were then derived from the assumptions, for example, "model the behaviors expected of their students." Social studies competencies were then grouped into four components: (1) goal determination in the social studies; (2) instructional design, strategies, and materials in the social studies; (3) implementation and demonstration in social studies; and (4) consequence and evaluation in the social studies. Competency statements and instructional objectives for each component were developed and served as the basis for the design of learning experiences for preservice teachers. These components which can be used as the starting point for design are illustrated in the paper. (Author/RM)

25. Improving the Principal's Performance as an Instructional Leader.

Abstract

This paper identifies the factors that can make a building principal an effective instructional leader, as seen from the superintendent's perspective. According to the author, the effective instructional leader helps those in the educational community define instructional goals and objectives, works to develop effectiveness in teaching, builds a productive educational organization, creates a climate for teacher growth and leadership, and provides adequate resources for teaching. The most important aspect of the principal's leadership role is teacher supervision, which may conflict with his or her role as a teacher evaluator. The author urges collaboration with teachers to develop a three-phase instructional improvement cycle to guarantee the feedback both parties need for supervision and evaluation to be compatible. Evaluation conferences must then be planned and conducted carefully to maintain the trust that has been established. The author concludes his discussion of the principal's role by listing a number of personnel management concepts he believes instructional leaders should understand. (PGD)

Abstract

A new approach to teacher preparation has been implemented at the University of Houston (Texas). The principal goals of preservice education in the Reflective Inquiry Teacher Education (RITE) Program are to produce teachers who: (1) are liberally educated; (2) have a scholarly command of a discipline; (3) teach effectively; (4) reflect on and inquire into teaching practice; and (5) can work effectively in cross-cultural settings. The RITE Progam is designed with high potential for training reflective, inquiry-oriented teachers. The curriculum is organized around focal problems stimulating to the complexities of teaching. Clinical training and field practice orients students toward an analytic approach to teaching, and students are taught to use a stimulated recall process technique to inquire into their teaching effectiveness. Students are taught by faculty specialized in the pedagogics to be mastered. Ongoing research is conducted into the characteristics of effective teachers, schools, and teacher training practices. Abstract

The impact of epigenetics on the differentiation of memory T (Tmem) cells is poorly defined. We generated deep epigenomes comprising genome-wide profiles of DNA methylation, histone modifications, DNA accessibility, and coding and non-coding RNA expression in naive, central-, effector-, and terminally differentiated CD45RA+ CD4+ Tmem cells from blood and CD69+ Tmem cells from bone marrow (BM-Tmem). We observed a progressive and proliferation-associated global loss of DNA methylation in heterochromatic parts of the genome during Tmem cell differentiation. Furthermore, distinct gradually changing signatures in the epigenome and the transcriptome supported a linear model of memory development in circulating T cells, while tissue-resident BM-Tmem branched off with a unique epigenetic profile. Integrative analyses identified candidate master regulators of Tmem cell differentiation, including the transcription factor FOXP1. This study highlights the importance of epigenomic changes for Tmem cell biology and demonstrates the value of epigenetic data for the identification of lineage regulators.

Abstract

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 3006-3009, Monolithic Module Assembly (MMA) modules made using back contact crystalline silicon cells present new and interesting challenges for Failure Analysis (FA) and Cell-to-Module (CTM) analysis compared to conventional front contact cells. This paper describes the use of electroluminescence imaging (EL), infra-red imaging (IR), and module shading screen IV techniques to characterize individual cell performance in modules to aid in FA, and validation of the contribution of loss elements to module performance. The approach was to build Monolithic Module Assembly (MMA) type modules using EWT back contact cells in different sizes: 3x4 and 6x10 scale, to evaluate the contribution of shunting and resistive loss elements in the module circuit and to characterize loss mechanisms during prototype builds using the above mentioned techniques. Development of new techniques for module characterization is important because back contact cells provide current to the circuit differently than front contact cells. The technology used here employs electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) to provide the cell to circuit interconnection and it is important to characterize and eliminate the new, potential failure modes associated with this relatively new interconnect method to prove that high reliability can be obtained with MMA modules.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are common, heritable neurodevelopmental conditions. The genetic architecture of ASDs is complex, requiring large samples to overcome heterogeneity. Here we broaden coverage and sample size relative to other studies of ASDs by using Affymetrix 10K SNP arrays and 1,168 families with at least two affected individuals, performing the largest linkage scan to date while also analyzing copy number variation in these families. Linkage and copy number variation analyses implicate chromosome 11p12-p13 and neurexins, respectively, among other candidate loci. Neurexins team with previously implicated neuroligins for glutamatergic synaptogenesis, highlighting glutamate-related genes as promising candidates for contributing to ASDs. © 2007 Nature Publishing Group.

46. Central Renin-Angiotensin System Activation and Inflammation Induced by High-Fat Diet Sensitize Angiotensin II-Elicited Hypertension.

Abstract

Obesity has been shown to promote renin-angiotensin system activity and inflammation in the brain and to be accompanied by increased sympathetic activity and blood pressure. Our previous studies demonstrated that administration of a subpressor dose of angiotensin (Ang) II sensitizes subsequent Ang II-elicited hypertension. The present study tested whether high-fat diet (HFD) feeding also sensitizes the Ang II-elicited hypertensive response and whether HFD-induced sensitization is mediated by an increase in renin-angiotensin system activity and inflammatory mechanisms in the brain. HFD did not increase baseline blood pressure, but enhanced the hypertensive response to Ang II compared with a normal-fat diet. The sensitization produced by the HFD was abolished by concomitant central infusions of either a tumor necrosis factor-α synthesis inhibitor, pentoxifylline, an Ang II type 1 receptor blocker, irbesartan, or an inhibitor of microglial activation, minocycline. Furthermore, central pretreatment with tumor necrosis factor-α mimicked the sensitizing action of a central subpressor dose of Ang II, whereas central pentoxifylline or minocycline abolished this Ang II-induced sensitization. Real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis of lamina terminalis tissue indicated that HFD feeding, central tumor necrosis factor-α, or a central subpressor dose of Ang II upregulated mRNA expression of several components of the renin-angiotensin system and proinflammatory cytokines, whereas inhibition of Ang II type 1 receptor and of inflammation reversed these changes. The results suggest that HFD-induced sensitization of Ang II-elicited hypertension is mediated by upregulation of the brain renin-angiotensin system and of central proinflammatory cytokines.
