9. Supply Chain Resilience in the European Automotive Industry

Abstract

The transformation of supply chains is an important factor for European Automotive OEMs to compete internationally. But it turns out that these are not as resilient as required. A resilient supply chain requires appropriate risk management measures that minimize internal and external influences. However, in some areas of value creation and supply chains, weaknesses are evident that are determined by a high dependence on international supplier markets. This approach to research in this area investigates whether Automotive OEM internal departments perceive certain risks differently. This was done by means of a survey of European OEMs to reveal different perceptions on important aspects of risk-based factors. Internal resilience would be necessary as a first step towards strengthening the supply chains in order to subsequently position themselves against stronger emerging competition from the Asian and US economies. This requires a strong European centering of supplier and partner networks, for example in the area of physical goods such as semiconductors and batteries. In order to support these necessary developments, networks are being established and promoted by the EU. GAIA-X and especially Catena-X are bases for the Automotive industry to adapt and optimize resilience and compliance regulations to governmental and intranational guidelines. As result of this research, it remains to be said that the realignment of supply chains must succeed in improving cooperation and delivery conditions across the entire OEM spectrum while at the same time reducing costs. In this way, the European Automotive market can be positioned as a resilient, strong market player for the future. The basic prerequisite for this is a uniform and coordinated view of risk-based factors in the individual companies and departments.

10. Real-Time High-Sensitivity Reaction Monitoring of Important Nitrogen-Cycle Synthons by 15N Hyperpolarized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Abstract

Here, we show how signal amplification by reversible exchange hyperpolarization of a range of 15N-containing synthons can be used to enable studies of their reactivity by 15N nuclear magnetic resonance (NO2- (28% polarization), ND3 (3%), PhCH2NH2 (5%), NaN3 (3%), and NO3- (0.1%)). A range of iridium-based spin-polarization transfer catalysts are used, which for NO2- work optimally as an amino-derived carbene-containing complex with a DMAP-d2 coligand. We harness long 15N spin-order lifetimes to probe in situ reactivity out to 3 × T1. In the case of NO2- (T1 17.7 s at 9.4 T), we monitor PhNH2 diazotization in acidic solution. The resulting diazonium salt (15N-T1 38 s) forms within 30 s, and its subsequent reaction with NaN3 leads to the detection of hyperpolarized PhN3 (T1 192 s) in a second step via the formation of an identified cyclic pentazole intermediate. The role of PhN3 and NaN3 in copper-free click chemistry is exemplified for hyperpolarized triazole (T1 < 10 s) formation when they react with a strained alkyne. We also demonstrate simple routes to hyperpolarized N2 in addition to showing how utilization of 15N-polarized PhCH2NH2 enables the probing of amidation, sulfonamidation, and imine formation. Hyperpolarized ND3 is used to probe imine and ND4+ (T1 33.6 s) formation. Furthermore, for NO2-, we also demonstrate how the 15N-magnetic resonance imaging monitoring of biphasic catalysis confirms the successful preparation of an aqueous bolus of hyperpolarized 15NO2- in seconds with 8% polarization. Hence, we create a versatile tool to probe organic transformations that has significant relevance for the synthesis of future hyperpolarized pharmaceuticals.

KGaA, Weinheim In a natural geochemical cycle, manganese-oxide minerals (MnOx) are principally formed through a microbial process, where a putative multicopper oxidase MnxG plays an essential role. Recent success in isolating the approximately 230 kDa, enzymatically active MnxEFG protein complex, has advanced our understanding of biogenic MnOxmineralization. Here, the kinetics of MnOxformation catalyzed by MnxEFG are examined using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and the first electrochemical characterization of the MnxEFG complex is reported using Fourier transformed alternating current voltammetry. The voltammetric studies undertaken using near-neutral solutions (pH 7.8) establish the apparent reversible potentials for the Type 2 Cu sites in MnxEFG immobilized on a carboxy-terminated monolayer to be in the range 0.36–0.40 V versus a normal hydrogen electrode. Oxidative priming of the MnxEFG protein complex substantially enhances the enzymatic activity, as found by in situ electrochemical QCM analysis. The biogeochemical significance of this enzyme is clear, although the role of an oxidative priming of catalytic activity might be either an evolutionary advantage or an ancient relic of primordial existence.

Abstract

Hyperpolarization enhances the intensity of the NMR signals of a molecule, whose in vivo metabolic fate can be monitored by MRI with higher sensitivity. SABRE is a hyperpolarization technique that could potentially be used to image nitric oxide (NO) production in vivo. This would be very important, because NO dysregulation is involved in several pathologies, including cardiovascular ones. The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) pathway leads to NO production via conversion of L-arginine into L-citrulline. NO is a free radical gas with a short half-life in vivo (approximate to 5 s), therefore direct NO quantification is challenging. An indirect method - based on quantifying conversion of an L-Arg - to L-Cit-derivative by H-1 NMR spectroscopy is herein proposed. A small library of pyridyl containing L-Arg derivatives was designed and synthesised. In vitro tests showed that compounds 4a-j and 11a-c were better or equivalent substrates for the eNOS enzyme (NO2- production = 19-46 uM) than native L-Arg (NO2- production = 25 mu M). Enzymatic conversion of L-Arg to L-Cit derivatives could be monitored by 1H NMR. The maximum hyperpolarization achieved by SABRE reached 870-fold NMR signal enhancement, which opens up exciting future perspectives of using these molecules as hyperpolarized MRI tracers in vivo. Abstract

Hyperpolarization turns typically weak NMR and MRI responses into strong signals so that ordinarily impractical measurements become possible. The potential to revolutionize analytical NMR and clinical diagnosis through this approach reflect this area's most compelling outcomes. Methods to optimize the low-cost parahydrogen-based approach signal amplification by reversible exchange with studies on a series of biologically relevant nicotinamides and methyl nicotinates are detailed. These procedures involve specific (2)H labeling in both the agent and catalyst and achieve polarization lifetimes of ca 2 min with 50% polarization in the case of methyl-4,6-d2 -nicotinate. Because a 1.5-T hospital scanner has an effective (1)H polarization level of just 0.0005% this strategy should result in compressed detection times for chemically discerning measurements that probe disease. To demonstrate this technique's generality, we exemplify further studies on a range of pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, and isonicotinamide analogs that feature as building blocks in biochemistry and many disease-treating drugs.

45. Robust Sub-Monolayers of Co3O4 Nano-Islands: A Highly Transparent Morphology for Efficient Water Oxidation Catalysis

KGaA, Weinheim The scalable synthesis of highly transparent and robust sub-monolayers of Co3O4 nano-islands, which efficiently catalyze water oxidation, is reported. Rapid aerosol deposition of Co3O4 nanoparticles and thermally induced self-organization lead to an ultra-fine nano-island morphology with more than 94% light transmission at a wavelength of 500 nm. These transparent sub-monolayers demonstrate a remarkable mass-weighted water oxidation activity of 2070–2350 A gCo3O4−1 and per-metal turnover frequency of 0.38–0.62 s−1 at an overpotential of 400 mV in 1 m NaOH aqueous solution. This mixed valent cobalt oxide structure exhibits excellent long-term electrochemical and mechanical stability preserving the initial catalytic activity over more than 12 h of constant current electrolysis and 1000 consecutive voltammetric cycles. The potential of the Co3O4 nano-islands for photoelectrochemical water splitting has been demonstrated by incorporation of co-catalysts in GaN nanowire photoanodes. The Co3O4-GaN photoanodes reveal significantly reduced onset overpotentials, improved photoresponse and photostability compared to the bare GaN ones. These findings provide a highly performing catalyst structure and a scalable synthesis method for the engineering of efficient photoanodes for integrated solar water-splitting cells.
