Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) can support the company’s internal audit function (IAF) by delivering substantial strategic oversight, minimizing manual procedures, and making possible additional value-added auditing service. Currently, there are research gaps in the literature, such as limited studies on the topic, low AI adoption rates in the IAF across different countries and regions, and a shortage of comprehensive frameworks for effectively using AI in the IAF. Hence, this review work aims to fill the research gap by offering an outline of research avenues on the topic in the literature and suggesting a new compressive framework for the effective use of AI in the IAF. This paper undertakes a systematic literature review (SLR) approach and aspires to highlight the state of research on the use of AI in the IAF, to deliver insight for scholars and industry experts on the issue, and to reveal the implications for IAF of the new AI technology. Moreover, to quickly make artificial intelligence work in internal audit functions, the CACS framework was recommended with attributes such as commitment, access, capability, and skills development (CACS). This work provides significant contributions for guiding future research directions and the development of theoretical foundations for the IAF field. On a practical level, the work will help internal auditors to assess and understand the potential advantages and risks of implementing AI in their organization’s IAF. For regulators, this review should prove useful for updating regulations on internal auditing in the context of using advanced technology such as AI and for ensuring the compliance of internal auditing practices to the evolving technology. Organizations can also benefit from this review to decide whether AI investments in their IAF are justified. This review made an initial extensive SLR on AI use in the IAF as a basis for developing new research avenues in auditing and accounting.

Abstract Available evidences suggest that podoconiosis is triggered by long term exposure of bare feet to volcanic red clay soil particles. Previous genome-wide studies in Ethiopia showed association between the HLA class II region and disease susceptibility. However, functional relationships between the soil trigger, immunogenetic risk factors and the immunological basis of the disease are uncharted. Therefore, we aimed to characterise the immune profile and gene expression of podoconiosis patients relative to endemic healthy controls. Peripheral blood immunophenotyping of T cells indicated podoconiosis patients had significantly higher CD4 and CD8 T cell surface HLA-DR expression compared to healthy controls while CD62L expression was significantly lower. The levels of the activation markers CD40 and CD86 were significantly higher on monocytes and dendritic cell subsets in patients compared to the controls. RNA sequencing gene expression data indicated higher transcript levels for activation, scavenger receptors, and apoptosis markers while levels were lower for histones, T cell receptors, variable, and constant immunoglobulin chain in podoconiosis patients compared to healthy controls. Our finding provides evidence that podoconiosis is associated with high levels of immune activation and inflammation with over-expression of genes within the pro-inflammatory axis. This offers further support to a working hypothesis of podoconiosis as soil particle-driven, HLA-associated disease of immunopathogenic aetiology.

Background: Hypoglycemia is a common and serious complication of diabetes. Diabetic patients who lack knowledge of hypoglycemic symptoms might lead to delayed treatment and causes death. Despite one study in Ethiopia found that 51.2 % of diabetic patients had poor knowledge of identifying hypoglycemia symptoms, there is a paucity of study regarding knowledge of hypoglycemia symptoms. Objective: This study aimed to explore knowledge of hypoglycemia symptoms and associated factors among diabetic patients in Adama Hospital Medical College. Methods: Health institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February–March 2021. Systematic random sampling method was used to select 212 diabetic patients. BackgroundSpiritual well-being has been shown to boost resistance to mental health crises in cancer patients during the diagnosis and treatment process, but there is a paucity of studies about spirituality in cancer patients, which may make it difficult for healthcare clinicians to assess spirituality and provide spiritual care.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the level of spiritual well-being and associated factors among cancer patients in HUCSH Oncology Center in 2022.Methods and materialsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was done from May 30 to June 30, 2022 among 267 cancer patients, and the respondents were selected by a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by using standardized interviewer-administered questionnaires (FACIT sp12). Data was entered using Epi data version 4.6, and analysis was carried out by using Statistical Package for Social Science version 25. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was conducted to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The strength of association was tested by using p-value at 95% CI. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of Hawassa University College of Medicine and Health Science. During data collection, the purpose of the study was clearly explained to the patients, and consent was obtained.ResultA total of 267 cancer patients were included in the study. There was 100% response rate. Majority of the patients (80.5%) were in a poor spiritual well-being state. Mental distress (AOR = 0.246; 95% CI: 0.114–0.531) and religious education (AOR = 1.288; 95% CI: 1.438–9.142) were factors significantly associated with spiritual well-being among cancer patients.Conclusion and recommendationThis study showed that more than two-thirds of patients had poor spiritual well-being. Mental distress and religious education were factors associated with spiritual well-being. Attention should be given by nurses of the center for spiritual well-being assessment in clinical practices favoring holistic care in the center.

Abstract Background Non-institutional delivery is one of the major reasons that results in high mortality rates for a mother and her neonate. The World Health Organization estimates that only 43% of mothers have access to skilled delivery services. A recent Ethiopian Mini Demographic Survey indicated that more than half of Ethiopian women have given birth non-institutionally. This shows that maternal health remains a major public health challenge in Ethiopia, irrespective of the government’s measures for institutional delivery. So, the aim of this study was to assess the practice of non-institutional delivery and its associated factors among women who gave birth in the study area. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 260 study participants from June 1 to July 1, 2022, in Boloso Bombe Woreda. Data collection was done using a structured questionnaire, and systematic sampling techniques were used to select the study subjects. The data was entered into the EPI data version 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. The adjusted odds ratio, along with 95% confidence intervals, was used, and the level of statistical significance was declared at a P-value of 0.05. Result Out of 260 women interviewed, 252 (97%) pregnant women participated in the interview. The prevalence of non-institutional delivery among study participants was 68.7% (95% CI: 63.1–72.9). Mothers who were a daily laborer [AOR = 6.6;95%CI(3.6(1.2–11.2), last pregnancy planned [AOR = 0.4; 95%CI (0.4(0.2–0.8)), an absence of antenatal care contacting history [AOR = 3.3; 95%CI (1.3–8.6)], respondents’ knowledge on the labor complication [AOR = 3; (95%CI); 3.5(2.2–6.1)], and place of first delivery [AOR = 8.7 95%CI(3.2–23)] were factors that significantly associated with practice of non-institutional delivery. Conclusion This study indicated that the majority of study participants practiced non-institutional delivery in this study area. Thus, we strongly recommend that all responsible bodies take immediate action, such as community health education on pregnancy-related complications, encouraging ANC visits, and raising awareness of the advantages of preventing non-institutional delivery in order to reduce non-institutional pregnancy practices and improve the factors identified.

Background: Since 2000, the Ethiopian ministries of health and other stakeholders have taken some measures to enhance institutional delivery. However, the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey 2019 report indicated that more than 50% of Ethiopian reproductive-age women gave birth outside health facilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the practice of noninstitutional delivery among women who gave birth at Boloso Bombe Woreda (district) in southern Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 252 study participants from June to July 2022 in Boloso Bombe Woreda. Data collection was done using a structured questionnaire and systematic sampling techniques were used to select the study subjects. Data were entered into the EPI data, version 3.1, and analyzed using SPSS, version 25. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs), along with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were used and the level of statistical significance was declared at a p-value of 0.05. Results: In this study, 252 participants completed the survey, with a 97% response rate. The prevalence of noninstitutional delivery among study participants was 68.7% (95% CI: 63.1?72.9). In this study, mother's occupation, such as working as a daily laborer (AOR?=?3.6; 95% CI [1.2?11.2]); absence of antenatal care history (AOR?=?3.3; 95% CI [1.3?8.6]); poor knowledge of labor complications (AOR?=?3.5; 95% CI [2.2?6.1]); and place of first delivery (AOR?=?8.7; 95% CI [3.2?23]) were factors that were positively and significantly associated with the practice of noninstitutional delivery. However, last pregnancy planned was negatively associated with the practice of noninstitutional delivery (AOR?=?0.4; 95% CI [0.2?0.8]). Conclusions: This study indicated that the majority of study participants practiced noninstitutional delivery in this study area. Therefore, we strongly recommend that all responsible bodies should take immediate action to reduce the practice of noninstitutional delivery and improve those identified factors.

Soil acidity, a major threat to food security in developing countries, can cause a staggering 71% decline in maize (Zea mays L.) production. Identifying the genetic basis of aluminum tolerance is crucial for developing improved varieties. This study investigated the heterosis and combining ability effects of selected maize inbred lines for aluminum tolerance to identify superior parents and families for further breeding advancements. Using a 7 × 7 half-diallel mating design, seven inbred lines of maize were crossed, each with varying levels of aluminum tolerance. Under controlled conditions with and without aluminum stress, parents and F1 hybrids were evaluated for traits related to aluminum tolerance. Our analysis revealed the significant role of both additive and nonadditive gene action in aluminum tolerance, highlighting specific parental lines and hybrid combinations with exceptional performance. For every trait under study, parental genotypes VL144091 and VL153179 showed positive and significant GCA effects, while parents VL143984, VL143893, KL154667, and VL1110532 had negative and significant GCA effects. These findings demonstrate the potential of utilizing heterosis and combining ability for breeding high-yielding, acid-tolerant maize cultivars, contributing to enhanced food security in regions affected by soil acidity.

Objective To assess diabetes knowledge and foot care practices among type 2 diabetes patients.Design An institution-based cross-sectional study was undertaken from 1 January to 31 January 2021.Setting Eastern Ethiopia.Participants Randomly selected type 2 diabetes patients who were available during the data collection period were included.Outcomes Patients’ diabetes knowledge was assessed with the revised diabetes knowledge test questionnaire. Five items were used to evaluate foot self-care practices.Results The study population comprised of 549 patients. About 52.5% of the patients had adequate diabetes knowledge (95% CI: 48.2% to 56.7%). Patients with an educational level of secondary school and above (adjusted OR (AOR): 2.04, 95% CI: 1.13 to 3.71), (AOR: 5.28, 95% CI: 2.28 to 12.22), and those with medium and above wealth status (AOR: 3.81, 95% CI: 2.24 to 6.47), (AOR: 3.46, 95% CI: 1.98 to 6.04), were found to have better odds of having adequate diabetes knowledge. However, those aged >55 years (AOR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.22 to 0.99) were found to have lower odds of adequate diabetes knowledge.Of the total included patients, 20.2% (95% CI: 16.9% to 23.8%) had good foot care practices. Knowledge of the target fasting plasma glucose (AOR: 3.18, 95% CI: 1.94 to 5.22) and adequate diabetes knowledge (AOR: 3.40, 95% CI: 1.95 to 5.91) were significantly associated with good foot care practices.Conclusion According to this study, about half of individuals with type 2 diabetes have adequate levels of knowledge about the disease. In addition, only one out of every five patients has good foot care habits. Diabetes education should emphasise the significance of rigorous adherence to daily foot care practices.

IntroductionDespite its deleterious consequences, khat chewing is escalating worldwide. However, there is a lack of evidence about the extent of khat chewing among pregnant women in Ethiopia, particularly in the current study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of current khat chewing and its associated factors among pregnant women in Chiro district, eastern Ethiopia.MethodsThis community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Chiro district from November 1 to 30, 2022 G.C. Study participants were selected using the systematic random sampling technique. An interview-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data through a house-to-house survey. The data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and analyzed in STATA 14 software. Characteristics of study participants were summarized using descriptive analysis, and binary logistic regression was used to identify determinants of khat chewing.ResultsA total of 409 pregnant women participated in this study, with a response rate of 99%. The overall prevalence of khat chewing was 60.4% (95% CI: 55.5%, 65.2%). Religion (AOR: 2.08; 95% CI: 1.13, 3.82), khat cultivation (AOR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.77), partner khat use (AOR: 5.54; 95% CI: 3.11, 9.88), pre-pregnancy khat use (AOR: 9.95; 95% CI: 5.55, 17.81), antenatal care (ANC) visit (AOR: 2.71; 95% CI: 1.41, 5.21), and mental distress (AOR: 4.89; 95% CI: 2.38, 10.02) were significantly associated with current khat chewing.ConclusionThe majority of pregnant women in the study area practice khat chewing. Thus, accessible and comprehensive pre-conception and pre-natal care incorporating the prevention and management of antenatal khat chewing is crucial to overcome this problem. Provision of mental healthcare involving partners of pregnant women is also important to reduce the extent and impacts of khat chewing during pregnancy. Further longitudinal studies triangulated with qualitative designs are recommended.

Abstract Background Stroke is a global public health concern with type 2 diabetes being one of the common risk factors. Knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning symptoms among type 2 diabetes patients is largely unknown in developing countries like Ethiopia. The inability to recognize stroke warning symptoms accurately is an important cause of delay in seeking medical attention. We investigated knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning symptoms among adults with type 2 diabetes and the factors associated with these variables. Methods This was an institution-based cross-sectional study. We enrolled 470 adult type 2 diabetes patients using a systematic random sampling method from four government-managed hospitals in Addis Ababa from 1 to 30 February 2021. The Stroke Recognition Questionnaire was adapted to measure the knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning symptoms. Sociodemographic characteristics, source of information, and reaction to stroke were also measured. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 and linear regression analysis was used to determine factors independently associated with knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning symptoms. Result The mean age of the participants was 50.6 ± 12.9 years. The mean score of knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning symptoms was 67.2% and 63.9%, respectively. Abstract Aims To compare the correlates of foot self‐care behaviours among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) adults with and without comorbid heart failure (HF). Design Cross‐sectional, correlational, comparative design. Methods A 210 T2D adults (105 with HF and 105 without HF) participated from August–December 2020. Foot self‐care behaviour was measured using the foot care subscale of the Summary of Diabetes Self‐Care Activities (SDSCA) instrument. A stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to explore variables predicting foot self‐care behaviour. Results The participants' mean age was 58.7 ± 10.9 years. Poor foot self‐care behaviour was reported in T2D adults both with (53.3%) and without (54.3%) HF. Participants with HF‐comorbidity were statistically significantly older and had higher total daily medication intake. Household income and the total number of daily medications statistically significantly predicted foot self‐care behaviour in HF‐comorbid T2D adults. Marital status, social support and body mass index predicted foot self‐care behaviour in the non‐HF group.

COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on preventable and treatable pediatric diseases in Ethiopia. This study looks at the impact of COVID-19 on pneumonia and acute diarrheal diseases in the country, as well as the differences between administrative regions. In Ethiopia, we conducted a retrospective pre-post study to assess the impact of COVID-19 on children under the age of five who had acute diarrhea and pneumonia and were treated in health facilities during the pre-COVID-19 era (March 2019 to February 2020) and the COVID-19 era (March 2020 to February 2021). From the National Health Management District Health Information System (DHIS2, HMIS), we retrieved data on total acute diarrheal disease and pneumonia, along with their regional and monthly distribution. We calculated incidence rate ratios comparing the rates of acute diarrhea and pneumonia during the pre-and post-COVID-19 eras and adjusted for the year, using Poisson regression. In this study, sulfated tin (IV) oxide solid acid catalyst was prepared for the epoxidation of Argemone mexicana oil (AMO) with peroxyacetic acid formed in-situ. The catalyst was synthesized using the chemical co-precipitation method and characterized. The effects of various epoxidation parameters on ethylenic double bond conversion (%) and oxygen ring content were analyzed. The maximum ethylenic double bond conversion of 95.5% and epoxy oxygen content of 6.25 was found at the molar ratio of AMO to 30% of H2O2 = 1:2.5, molar ratio of AMO to acetic acid = 1:1.5, catalyst concentration = 12.5%, and reaction temperature = 70 °C at reaction time = 6 h. The kinetic and thermodynamic features of the epoxidation of AMO were also analyzed with appropriate models. The results of the kinetic study of the epoxidation reaction followed pseudo first order with the activation energy = 0.47.03 kJ/mol. Moreover, the thermodynamic constants of epoxidation of AMO were found as ΔH = 44.18 kJ/mol, ΔS = −137.91 Jmol−1k−1) and ΔG = 91.12 kJ/mol. The epoxidized product of AMO was further analyzed using FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The results of these analyses confirmed the successful conversion of the ethylenic double bond in the AMO to EAMO.

Abstract Scaling up of diagnostic capacity is needed to mitigate the global pandemic of SARS-CoV2. However, there are challenges including shortage of sample collection swabs and transport medium. Saliva has been recommended as a simple, low-cost, non-invasive option. However, data from different populations and settings are limited. Here, we showed that saliva could be a good alternative sample to diagnose COVID-19 patients. Pair of NPS-saliva samples was collected from 152 symptomatic; confirmed COVID-19 patients, and compared their positivity rate, viral load, and duration of viral shedding. From 152 patients, 80 (52.63%) tested positive and 72 (47.37%) were negative for SARSA-CoV2 in NPS sample. In saliva, 129 (92.14%) were tested positive and 11 (7.86%) were negative on the day of admission to hospital. The overall percent agreement of RT-PCR result of Saliva to NPS was 70% (196/280). There have been limited studies linking baseline factors, including the viral load (VL) test, with virological non-suppression since the introduction of dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens as first-line antiretroviral treatment (ART) in Ethiopia. This study aimed to identify baseline factors associated with virological non-suppression between October 2020 and July 2022. A follow-up study was conducted in eastern Ethiopia among newly diagnosed people living with HIV (PLHIV). A questionnaire and a checklist were used to collect the data. Five milliliters of venous blood were obtained at baseline and six months to determine the VL. A VL test was performed using the Abbott RealTime HIV-1 assay. To determine predictors of virological non-suppression, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used. There were 235 PLHIV enrolled, 70.6% of whom were female, with a mean age of 33.9 years. Of the 161 retained on ART, virological non-suppression was 8.7% at six months. Baseline predictors of virological non-suppression were age ≤ 30 years, a history of substance use, and a VL greater than 4-log10 copies/mL. In this cohort, virological non-suppression was found to be optimal but still lagged slightly behind the third 95%–target. Thus, targeted interventions, the introduction of baseline VL testing to improve treatment outcomes, and fostering the attainment of UNAIDS 95–95–95 targets are recommended. Furthermore, broader research is recommended to explore the reasons for virological non-suppression in the study area.

IntroductionEven though optimal blood glucose control reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications, many patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) fail to achieve it for a variety of reasons. In the study area, there was a paucity of evidence regarding correlates of glycemic control. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the correlates of glycemic control among patients with T2D in Eastern Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 879 adult patients with T2D on follow-up at two public hospitals in Harar. Data were collected through interviews, physical measurements, and record reviews. The level of glycemic control was determined from three consecutive fasting plasma glucose (FPG) measurements. A mean value of FPG measurements falling in the normal range (80–130 mg/dl) was considered as optimal glycemic control; otherwise, a mean FPG level that is below or above the normal range (130 mg/dl) was defined as suboptimal glycemic control. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, while a linear regression model was used to find out the correlates of glycemic control. A beta coefficient and a 95% CI reported associations. The statistical significance was declared at a p-value ≤0.05.ResultsThe mean age of the patients with T2D was 52.7 ( ± 13.3) years. The mean FPG level was 172 ± 56 mg/dl. Suboptimal glycemic control was found in 76% (95% CI: 73.41, 79.04) of patients with T2D. In a multivariable linear regression, khat chewing (β = 6.12; 95% CI: 1.55, 8.69), triglycerides (β = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.41.48, 0.65), comorbidity (β = 5.29; 95% CI: 1.39, 9.13), and poor level of self-care practices (β = 5.43; 95% CI: 1.41, 6.46) showed a significant correlation with glycemic control.ConclusionsThis study found that about three-fourths of patients with T2D had suboptimal glycemic control. Khat chewing, comorbidity, and poor level of self-care practices were independently correlated with glycemic control. Thus, suppressing glycemic levels through appropriate treatment and strict diabetes self-care practices including avoidance of Khat chewing is a useful approach to attaining glycemic target that subsequently reduces cardiovascular risks.

Objective: This study investigated the level and correlates of self-care practices among patients with type 2 diabetes on follow-up in two public hospitals in Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: We conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study on adult patients with type 2 diabetes, surveying diabetes self-care practices using a 15-item Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities. Responses ranged from 0 to 7 days, and a composite score was computed representing the mean days of diabetes self-care practices. A generalized Poisson regression model with robust variance was used. The association between the diabetes self-care practices and correlates was examined using the incidence rate ratio with a 95% confidence level. The statistical significance was set at a p value of ⩽0.05. Results: This study included 879 patients with type 2 diabetes. The overall mean (standard deviation) diabetes self-care practices were 3.7 ± 1.1 days out of the recommended 7 days, indicating low self-care practices. After controlling for other variables, tertiary educational level (incidence rate ratio = 1.06; 95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.12), adequate diabetes knowledge (incidence rate ratio = 1.04; 95% confidence interval: 1.00, 1.08), moderate (incidence rate ratio = 1.07; 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.11) and high perceived self-efficacy (incidence rate ratio = 1.14; 95% confidence interval: 1.09, 1.13) (incidence rate ratio = 1.07; 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.11), high to marginal food security (incidence rate ratio = 1.13; 95% confidence interval: 1.03, 1.24), and receiving dietary advice (incidence rate ratio = 1.11; 95% confidence interval: 0.06, 1.15) were positively correlated with diabetes self-care practices. A history of hospitalization, on the other hand, was found to be inversely correlated with diabetes self-care practices (incidence rate ratio = 0.94; 95% confidence interval: 0.88, 0.99). Conclusion: The study indicated that adherence of patients with type 2 diabetes to the recommended self-care practices was considerably low. Therefore, tailored diabetes self-management education to enhance self-efficacy and diabetes self-care practices must be in place. This can be achieved through the system or individual-based integrated intervention efforts.

The middle-school years (Year 7 to Year 9) is a particular challenge for socially disadvantaged populations, with high proportions of children either repeating school years or dropping out of school. In Australia, a group of particular concern is First Nations children for whom there is a collective effort by all governments to improve education outcomes, although there have been few studies of their transition through the middle-school years. This retrospective study, using individual-level linked data, followed a cohort of 7881 First Nations students for 2 years after enrolment in Year 7 (Y7) in any Northern Territory (NT) government school in the years from 2008 to 2014 to quantify the transitional pathways through middle school and identify the factors associated with faltering progress. We used multinomial multilevel logistic regression to identify the factors associated with school dropout and repeating Y7 or Y8 (Y7/8). Two years after Y7 enrolment, eight in ten First Nations students progressed to Y9 (78.8%), more than one in ten students had dropped out of school (13.3%) before reaching Y9, and one in 12 (7.9%) repeated Y7/8. The likelihood of either dropping out of school or repeating years was higher among students who were enrolled in Y7 when aged less than 11.5 years, had a low Y7 school attendance rate, moved to either interstate or non-government schools and who lived in a remote area. Students who were not born in the NT and those with a record of substantiated child maltreatment during Y7 were more likely to repeat Y7/8. Planning interventions to improve school retention through the middle-school years should consider these factors.

In Ethiopia, some plants (Ethiopia kale, Swiss chard, and celery) remain underutilized for human consumption, as information on their nutritional potential remains limited. As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine the proximate, mineral, antinutrient, and phytochemical content of Ethiopia kale (Brassica carinata), Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris), carrot (Daucus carota), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), and cabbage (Brassica oleracea) using standard analytical methods. The moisture, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, total ash, total carbohydrate, and energy contents were found to be 6.44–16.62%, 6.76–33.64%, 9.19–54.86%, 0.50–4.00%, 1.00–2.75%, 7.28–68.73%, and 141.06–333.28 kcal/100 g, respectively. Ethiopia's kale had a high protein content, while celery had a high fat and fiber content. The calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, and sodium content (mg/100 gdb) ranged between 8.00 and 306.00, 8.10–11.83, 0.64–4.85, 11.34–63.00, 2.83–810.00, 0.15–41.65, and 1.50–443.80 mg/100 g, respectively. Swiss chard contained magnesium, potassium, and sodium, whereas celery was high in calcium and iron. The total oxalate, condensed tannin, and phytate (mg/100 gdb) ranged as follows: 0.88–4.92, 138.27–892.19, and 69.14–265.99, respectively. Ethiopia’s kale recorded a comparatively low amount of tannin and phytate. High mineral bioavailability, such as calcium, iron, and zinc, was obtained in Ethiopia kale. The results also showed that Ethiopia's kale contained a good amount of total phenolic and flavonoid content. The findings indicated that Ethiopia kale was a significant source of protein, had low antinutrient content with high mineral bioavailability, and had the potential to formulate nutrient-rich infant and young child foods using staple cereals and pulse grains.

Abstract Aim To describe the relationship between diabetes self‐care behaviours and glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes and comorbid heart failure. Design A cross‐sectional, correlational study. Method A secondary analysis of 180 participants’ baseline data from a clinical trial that tested a 6‐month integrated self‐care intervention was performed. Correlational and hierarchical linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between diabetes self‐care behaviours and glycaemic control. Result The Summary of Diabetes Self‐Care Activities general diet and Summary of Diabetes Self‐Care Activities exercise were negatively associated with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), while Summary of Diabetes Self‐Care Activities specific diet was positively associated. Diabetic end‐organ failure, taking insulin only and taking both oral antiglycaemic and insulin, predicted higher HbA1c and fasting blood glucose. African American race and dyslipidaemia predicted higher HbA1c while taking higher total daily medication predicted higher fasting blood glucose. Longer years lived with heart failure, lower ventricular ejection fraction and exposure to chemotherapy predicted lower fasting blood glucose.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess status of early warning indicators (EWIs) for HIV drug resistance in Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 90 health facilities (HFs) in 2015. Data were abstracted for ‘on time pill pickup’ (EWI-I), ‘Retention in care’ (EWI-II), ‘drug supply continuity’(EWI-III) and ‘dispensing practices’ (EWI-IV). Data analysis was conducted using WHO Excel tool and SPSS V20. Results: EWI-IV was excellent across all of the six rounds of EWI surveys conducted between 2008 and 2015. There were improvements in EWI-II over time from 55.6% to 81%. However, EWI-I and EWI-III declined from 86.7% to 31% and 100% to 41%, respectively. During 2015, half of the HFs in Gambella, Amhara and Southern Nation, Nationalities and people regional (SNNPR) states achieved excellent performance for EWI-I. Similarly, all HFs in Afar, Amhara, Dire Dawa, Harari and Tigray regions achieved excellent performance for EWI-II. There were also differences by level of HFs for EWI-III; 62% of hospitals and 28% of health centers were out of stock of one or more ARV drugs by 2015. Conclusion: Excellent performance of EWI-IV and improvement of EWI-II over time shall be maintained. The program shall further work to ensure medication adherence and supply continuity.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was comparing the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) results of trisodium citrate (TSC) and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulants. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar specialized referral hospital, northwest Ethiopia. A total of 70 TB presumptive participants were recruited. From each of the 70 participants of the study, 3 and 1.6 ml of blood was collected in EDTA tubes and 0.4 ml of trisodium Citrate anticoagulant containing test tubes, respectively. Results The mean ± SD values of ESR were 57.9 ± 41.45 mm/h in EDTA and 50.99 ± 43.5 mm/h in TSC anticoagulated blood. The mean difference of ESR values between EDTA and TSC blood (6.91 ± 13.66 mm/h) was statistically significant. The Mean ± SD of ESR values using EDTA and TSC in males were 59.57 ± 42.31 and 53.57 ± 44.61 mm/h while for females it was 54.71 ± 40.44 and 46.04 ± 41.82 mm/h, respectively. The study indicated that there was a significant difference between ESR values with EDTA and TSC anticoagulants.

Extraction of oil from Ethiopia indigenous Argemone Mexicana seed (AMS) was conducted via the soxhlet extraction technique using chloroform as the solvent. Response surface methodology based Box – Behnken experimental design (BBD) was applied to optimize the oil extraction. Three independent parameters such as seed weight, extraction time, and solvent volume, were optimized by BBD on the response variable, oil yield. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that all parameters significantly affected the oil yield. Accordingly, a high oil yield of 48.62 % was achieved at a seed weight of 6.75 g, extraction time of 3.65 h, and solvent volume of 140.3 ml. The oil was characterized by Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance which showed the presence of linoleic acid (59.43 %), oleic acid (24.92 %), and saturated fatty acids (15.65 %). Further characterization by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry revealed the oil composition, viz. linoleic acid (58.75 %), oleic acid (25.92 %), palmitic acid (12.73 %), and stearic acid (2.25 %). This shows that fatty acid compositions are considerably comparable by both these techniques. Physico-chemical properties of the oil were determined by recognized methods, and thus reported as refractive index (1.47); viscosity (31.12 cSt); density (0.91 g/cm3); saponification value (192.8 mg KOH/g); acid value (3.5 mg KOH/g); and iodine value (118.4 g I2/100 g). In addition, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra also showed the characteristic peaks of vegetable oils. These characteristics of AMS oil indicate that it is a potential feedstock for biofuels and biochemical products.

A moderate to high seroprevalence of exposure to Newcastle disease (NDV), avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) has recently been reported in Ethiopia, but it is unclear to what extent these contribute to clinical cases of respiratory disease. This study investigated the presence of these pathogens in chickens exhibiting respiratory disease in two live markets in Addis Ababa. Markets were visited weekly for three months, and 18 chickens displaying respiratory clinical signs were acquired. Swab samples were taken from the choana, trachea, air sac and larynx for bacteriology and PCR tests targeting these five pathogens. PCR-positive samples were sequenced. All 18 chickens were PCR-positive for aMPV, 50% for each of Mg and NDV, 39% for IBV and 11% for ILTV. Infections with >3 pathogens were detected in 17 of 18 chickens. Potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus were found in 16 to 44% of chickens. IBV-positive samples were of the 793B genotype. The results associate the presence of these organisms with clinical respiratory disease and are consistent with recent serological investigations, indicating a high level of exposure to multiple respiratory pathogens.

This article discusses the migration processes and brokering practices that link Ethiopia and Sudan by taking into account the social, economic, political and cultural underpinnings of human smuggling in the region. The analysis is based on three months of fieldwork using a conventional qualitative research methodology. Respondents were selected from actors such as smugglers, migrants and government personnel involved in the migration process, facilitation and control activities. Since the 1990s, significant irregular overland labour migration has emerged from Ethiopian towns and villages to Khartoum, Sudan via the border towns of Metema on the Ethiopian side and Galabat on the Sudanese side. However, how various actors engage in shaping this migration process and how human smuggling sustains despite increasing control efforts by the state is less understood.

Abstract Background Pastoralists rely on traditional healers (THs) for general health problems. However, some studies indicate that such practices result in delays in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) cases. This study aims to assess the role of traditional healers in the detection and referral of active TB cases in a pastoralist community. Methods We identified 22 traditional healers from 7 villages of Kereyu pastoralist community in the Fentale district in Ethiopia in January 2015. We trained these THs in identifying presumptive TB symptoms and early referral to the nearby healthcare facilities. The training was held during a 1 week period that included a visit to their villages and follow-up. A 1 day meeting was held with the traditional healers, the district TB care and prevention coordinator and health extension workers from the selected sub-district to discuss the referral link between THs and the nearby healthcare facilities. Health providers working at the TB units in the selected healthcare facilities were oriented about the training given and planned involvement of THs in referring presumptive TB case. In addition, documentation of the presumptive TB cases was discussed. Results We succeeded in tracing and interviewing 8 of the 22 THs. The rest were on seasonal migration. According to the THs report for the 1 year period, these 8 THs had referred 24 TB suspects to the healthcare facilities. Sputum smear microscopy confirmed 13 of the 24 suspects as having TB cases. Among those confirmed, 10 completed treatment and three were on treatment. Five presumptive TB cases were confirmed non TB cases through further evaluation at the healthcare facilities and six of the presumptive TB cases were lost to follow up by the THs. Whereas, four of the presumptive TB cases were lost to follow up to the healthcare facility. Conclusions Results of the present study indicate that THs can contribute to the detection of undiagnosed active TB cases in a pastoralist community, provided they are given appropriate training and support.

Abstract Background Hypertension self-care practice is essential for blood pressure control and reduction of hypertension complications. Nevertheless, we know little concerning hypertension self-care practice in Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to assess hypertension self-care practice and associated factors among patients in public health facilities in Dessie town, Ethiopia. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 309 hypertensive patients (mean age 58.8 years, 53.4% women) completed the interviewer-administered questionnaire in Amharic language. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were conducted using SPSS version 22. Result The mean score for hypertension self-care was 37.7 ± 8.2 and 51% scored below the mean. Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) remains the prime killer disease among infectious diseases. TB control depends on early case detection and treatment in a directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) programme. The success of DOTS depends on the ability of the health care system to identify and properly manage TB cases. The present study aims to assess healthcare provider (HCP) knowledge, attitude and perceived stigma regarding TB and perception about traditional healers. Methods A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 108 HCPs using a semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire from September 2014 to January 2015. The study district has a high TB burden area with one district hospital, 4 health centres, and 18 health posts. All health facilities and HCPs available during the study period in the district were included in the study. Statistical software for social science (SPSS) version 22 and STATA version 14 were used to enter and analyse data, respectively. Results The majority (64%) of the HCPs had poor overall knowledge regarding TB, and 67.6 and 57.6% had poor knowledge regarding TB diagnosis and nature of the disease, respectively. Moreover, most 66.7 and 55.6% of the HCPs had an unfavourable attitude towards TB and TB control systems, respectively. Slightly under half (49.1%) of the HCPs had a favourable attitude towards TB patients, and the majority (88.9%) had low perceived stigma. The majority (87.0%) of the HCPs indicated the importance of community involvement in TB control activity. Moreover, most (60.2%) of the HCPs showed willingness to collaborate with traditional healers (THs) on TB control activity. Conclusions Healthcare workers’ knowledge gap and unfavourable attitude towards TB control systems reported in this study may cause poor TB care delivery. HCPs’ perception of the importance of community involvement in TB control and willingness to collaborate with THs on TB management could be an opportunity to strengthen the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) component of End TB strategy through community engagement. Training and workshops could be used to address the knowledge gap and the unfavourable attitude regarding TB among HCPs.

Abstract Glycosylinositolphosphorylceramides (GIPCs) are the predominant lipid in the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Characterized GIPC glycosylation mutants have severe or lethal plant phenotypes. However, the function of the glycosylation is unclear. Previously, we characterized Arabidopsis thaliana GONST1 and showed that it was a nucleotide sugar transporter which provides GDP‐mannose for GIPC glycosylation. gonst1 has a severe growth phenotype, as well as a constitutive defense response. Here, we characterize a mutant in GONST1’s closest homolog, GONST2. The gonst2‐1 allele has a minor change to GIPC headgroup glycosylation. Like other reported GIPC glycosylation mutants, gonst1‐1gonst2‐1 has reduced cellulose, a cell wall polymer that is synthesized at the plasma membrane. The gonst2‐1 allele has increased resistance to a biotrophic pathogen Golovinomyces orontii but not the necrotrophic pathogen Botrytis cinerea. Expression of GONST2 under the GONST1 promoter can rescue the gonst1 phenotype, indicating that GONST2 has a similar function to GONST1 in providing GDP‐D‐Man for GIPC mannosylation.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has revealed the global public health importance of robust diagnostic testing. To overcome the challenge of nucleic acid (NA) extraction and testing kit availability, an efficient method is urgently needed.ObjectivesTo establish an efficient, time and resource-saving and cost-effective methods, and to propose an ad hoc pooling approach for mass screening of SARS-CoV-2.MethodsWe evaluated pooling approach on both direct clinical and NA samples. The standard reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test of the SARS CoV-2 was employed targeting the nucleocapsid (N) and open reading frame (ORF1ab) genomic region of the virus. The experimental pools were created using SARS CoV-2 positive clinical samples and extracted RNA spiked with up to 9 negative samples. For the direct clinical samples viral NA was extracted from each pool to a final extraction volume of 200μL, and subsequently both samples tested using the SARS CoV-2 RT-PCR assay.ResultsWe found that a single positive sample can be amplified and detected in pools of up to 7 samples depending on the cycle threshold (Ct) value of the original sample, corresponding to high, and low SARS CoV-2 viral copies per reaction. However, to minimize false negativity of the assay with pooling strategies and with unknown false negativity rate of the assay under validation, we recommend pooling of 4/5 in 1 using the standard protocols of the assay, reagents and equipment. The predictive algorithm indicated a pooling ratio of 5 in 1 was expected to retain accuracy of the test irrespective of the Ct value samples spiked, and result in a 137% increase in testing efficiency.ConclusionsThe approaches showed its concept in easily customized and resource-saving manner and would allow expanding of current screening capacities and enable the expansion of detection in the community. We recommend clinical sample pooling of 4 or 5 in 1. However, we don't advise pooling of clinical samples when disease prevalence is greater than 7%; particularly when sample size is large.

Companies may have their level of optimal working capital that maximizes their values through the effective management of current liabilities and assets. Previously, many studies were made on the impact of working capital management on the company’s performance in different sectors; however, its impact on the performance of firms that are engaged in export activities was not given any consideration and this particular study has attempted to investigate the fundamental impact of working capital management on the export firm’s performance in Ethiopia. To analyze this particular study, a total of 164 exporters operating in Ethiopia have been taken as a sample and both primary and secondary data collection methods were used. The data gathered from the sample of the study were analyzed using a multiple linear regression model and the result reveals that working capital management which was measured by account receivables period, cash conversion cycle, and accounts payable period has a statistically significant and positive correlation with the performance of exporting firms in Ethiopia which was measured by both return on assets and return on investment. However, working capital management which was measured by the inventory conversion period has a statistically significant and positive impact on return on investment, but it has an insignificant impact on the performance of sampled export firms in Ethiopia which was measured by return on assets. Based on the result of the study, firms may need to extend credit terms for customers, may prolong their cash conversion cycle, may need an extended payment period, and may or may not hold a high volume of inventory. All extending periods and cycles shall be made up to the extent of attaining an optimal level of working capital and better to implement a conservative policy of working capital management. Thus, it is advisable to consider the result of this study while making decisions regarding their working capital management to support their performance.

In this paper, a comprehensive survey on thermal and geometric design parameters of composite materials utilized in the fabrication of modern RFID systems has been discussed mainly due to its advantages such as lightweight and high strength. Designing of RF antenna setup requires careful consideration of material, geometric and fabrication parameters. Polymer materials were chosen as the substrate and subjected to extensive studies to determine and predict the capability of the miniaturized RFID antenna. The effect of the polymer matrix composite (PMC) material on the antenna parameters such as gain, bandwidth, and return loss is analyzed and realized that improvement in bandwidth and perfection in impedance matching can be further accomplished by employing fractal structure. It is also discovered that the thermal properties affect the impedance and operating frequencies, thus enabling multilayer PMC deploying fractal structured RFID antennas to be used for many applications such as logistics, aerospace, biomedical, and mining.

The proposed RFID reader antenna progressed with perfect electric conductor (PEC) as the radiating element and FR 4 as the substrate to achieve circular polarization, enhancement in bandwidth, and read range. The design presents a CPW feed RFID antenna for near-field reading applications, between the range of 903 MHz to 929 MHz. The operating frequency of the proposed design is 900 MHz, axial ratio of the model is less than 3 dB, impedance bandwidth is 256 MHz, and axial bandwidth is 36 MHz, proving to be adequate for near-field RFID reader applications such as item-level tagging and smart shelf. The proposed antenna model is realized with fractal structure to achieve miniaturization. The developed antenna is optimized using EM software for numerical analysis. The designed antenna is fabricated, and the prototype is characterized in terms of dielectric constant and loss tangent. The obtained results indicate high correlation with simulation results.

Dolutegravir-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been scaled up in many developing countries, including Ethiopia. However, subtype-dependent polymorphic differences might influence the occurrence of HIV-drug-resistance mutations (HIVDRMs). We analyzed the prevalence of pre-treatment integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) HIVDRMs and naturally occurring polymorphisms (NOPs) of the integrase gene, using plasma samples collected as part of the national HIVDR survey in Ethiopia in 2017. We included a total of 460 HIV-1 integrase gene sequences from INSTI-naïve (n = 373 ART-naïve and n = 87 ART-experienced) patients. No dolutegravir-associated HIVDRMs were detected, regardless of previous exposure to ART. However, we found E92G in one ART-naïve patient specimen and accessory mutations in 20/460 (4.3%) of the specimens. Abstract Background Diabetes, a rising global health problem, requires continuous self-care practice to prevent acute and chronic complications. However, studies show that few diabetes patients practice the recommended self-care in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess factors associated with self-care practice among adult diabetes patients in public hospitals of West Shoa Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 257 diabetes patients (mean age 42.9 ± 14.6 years, 54.1% male) completed the survey in Afan Oromo and Amharic languages. A questionnaire consisting standardized tools was used to collect the data. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were conducted using SPSS version 21. Results The mean score for diabetes self-care was 39.8 ± 9.5 and 45.5% of the participants scored below the mean. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that having higher diabetes knowledge (AOR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.22, 4.80), self-efficacy (AOR = 3.30, 95% CI = 1.64, 6.62), social support (AOR = 2.86, 95% CI = 1.37, 5.96), secondary school education (AOR = 6.0, 95% CI = 1.90, 18.85), and longer duration of diabetes (AOR = 5.55, 95% CI = 2.29, 13.44) were important predictors of good diabetes self-care practice. Conclusion The diabetes education programs should use strategies that enhance patients’ diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy, and social support. Patients with recent diabetes diagnosis need special attention as they may relatively lack knowledge and skills in self-care. Further studies are needed to elucidate pathways through which diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy, social support, and health literacy affect diabetes self-care.

Abstract Background Morbidity and mortality rates of food borne diseases are consistently highest in African due to poor food handling and sanitation practices. Thus, the study aimed to assess food handling practice and associated factors among food handlers of Restaurants in Bahir Dar Town, northwest, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from December, 7/2012 to January, 2/2013 among food handlers working in 106 restaurants in Bahir Dar Town. A structured questionnaire composed of socio-demographic factors, food safety knowledge, working environmental characteristics and food hygiene practice of food handlers was employed to collect the data via interviewing and observations. Binary logistic regression model was fitted to assess factors associated with food hygiene practice after multi-collinearity and outlier were checked and data was clean. Both crude odds ratio (COR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) were estimated to show the strength of association. In multivariate analysis, variables with a P value of ≤ 0.05 were considered as statistical significant. Results About 67.6% [95% confidence interval (CI) 58.8, 76.4] of food handlers had good food hygiene practice, whereas 32.4% of food handlers had poor food hygiene practice. The odds of having good food hygiene practice was higher among food handlers who had received food safety training [AOR: 4.7, 95% CI 1.7, 12.8], had formal education [AOR: 6.4, 95% CI 3.5, 11.5] and work experiences greater than 2 years [AOR: 3.4, 95% CI 1.8, 6.4]. At last, food handlers working in restaurants which had piped fountains for hand wash were 2.1 times more likely to have good food hygiene practice[AOR: 2.1, 95% CI 1.1, 3.8]. Conclusion In this study, the overall food hygiene practice of food handlers is not to the acceptable level. Therefore, endeavors ought to be reinforced to improve food hygiene practices of food handlers through intervention programs such as training and education. Also emphasis should be given on the accessibility of piped fountains for the better food handling practice of food handlers.

The Awash River basin is classified into the upper basin, middle basin, and lower basin. The upper basin is the most irrigated and socio-economically important, wherein early and modern agriculture started. This study aimed to assess the upper basin’s hydroclimate variability under climate change from 1991 to 2015 following the county’s land-use policy change. Distinguished topographical settings, namely, lowland, midland, and highland, are used for upper Awash basin hydroclimate trend analysis. Lowland stations revealed a nonsignificant seasonal and annual increasing trend except for the Autumn season. Midland stations showed a decreased seasonal rainfall. Except for Sendafa, the increased station, the highland area exhibited an annual decreasing trend. The Awash-Hombole and Mojo main tributaries are used for the evaluation of basin streamflow. The Awash-Hombole main tributary resulted in annually growing trends during the summer season. Mojo main tributary resulted in a significantly decreasing trend during the spring, summer, and autumn seasons with a 99% level of significance. Therefore, following the basin’s topographic nature, the change of hydroclimatic elements, mainly of the rainfall and streamflow, is observed. Accordingly, its hydroclimate variated by 11 and 38% with precipitation and streamflow, respectively, from the mean value within the study time series.

The Anthropocene thesis poses new challenges to human activity on the planet. These challenges also apply to the built environment. Climate change will increase existing threats, and create new ones, for both human and natural systems. Above all, the built environment is expected to provide structural stability, access to water necessary for life, and safe production of clean energy. This research-by-design was focused on designing an adaptive built environment for Anthropocene societies and the maintenance of their well-being, and on envisioning and conceptualizing new architectural solutions based on multidisciplinary knowledge and CAD parametric design methods and tools. The conceptual designs are the result of these studies. These visions show how wind loads can be reduced, water can be stored, diverse energy sources can be integrated into one work of architecture, and thermal comfort can be provided to support local communities and the life of the environment in the belief that the coexistence of species on the planet will happen. They also illustrate how humanity will be able to use the Earth and its atmosphere as an energy producer and conductor and create a global, wireless, non-commercial energy network, accessible to all.
