Abstract

This book explores the multifaceted aspects of sculptor’s workshops from the Renaissance to the early nineteenth century. Contributors take a fresh look at the sculptor’s workshop as both a physical and discursive space. By studying some of the most prominent artists’ sculptural practices, the workshop appears as a multifaced, sociable and practical space. The book creates a narrative in which the sculptural workshop appears as a working laboratory where new measuring techniques, new materials and new instruments were tested and became part of the lived experience of the artist and central to the works coming into being. Artists covered include Donatello, Roubilliac, Thorvaldsen, Canova, and Christian Daniel Rauch. The book will be of interest to scholars studying art history, sculpture, artist workshops, and European studies.

Abstract

This chapter introduced the multifaced functions which sculptural workshop served from the Renaissance into the nineteenth century. Often perceived primarily as loci of artistic creativity and magic, it is argued that we should also pay attention to the negotiations taking place between artist and commissioner and to the non-glamorous work associated with the making of a sculpture and thereby regard the workshops as spaces where mind and body unite.

The Cyrenaica was the region in North Africa located between Roman Egypt and Tripolitania; today it is part of Libya. It is cut off to the north and west by the Mediterranean and to the east and south by the Sahara desert. The main city, Cyrene, was founded by Greek settlers from Thera in the seventh century bce. Around 320 bce the region came under the control of the Ptolemies, who ruled it almost continuously until the first century bce, when it was taken over by the Romans.

Abstract

In the early 19th century, Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was Europe’s foremost artist of marble portraits. This book uncovers how and why the 3D portrait continues to raise our curiosity: its craft, its haptic properties, its physical and affecting presence. For millennia, portrait busts in 3D have been used to represent and promote social relations and human empathy. Our social self depends on seeing each other face to face. Today, we consume faces as never before, especially on social media, where most of these (flat) faces are momentary and quickly forgotten. The 3D portrait is different as it provides a direct and enduring bodily experience. Without forcing us to a predefined response, faces in 3D invite us to come close and explore the person as well as the portrayal.
