Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common among military veterans and has been associated with an increased risk of dementia. It is unclear if this is due to increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other mechanisms. This case control study sought evidence for AD, as defined by the 2018 National Institute on Aging - Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) research framework, by measuring tau, β-amyloid, and glucose metabolism using positron emission tomography (PET) in veterans with service-related TBI. Seventy male Vietnam war veterans-40 with TBI (age 68.0 ± 2.5 years) and 30 controls (age 70.1 ± 5.3 years)-with no prior diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment underwent β-amyloid (18F-Florbetaben), tau (18F-Flortaucipir), and fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET. The TBI cohort included 15 participants with mild, 16 with moderate, and nine with severe injury. β-Amyloid level was calculated using the Centiloid (CL) method and tau was measured by standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) using the cerebellar cortex as reference region. Analyses were adjusted for age and APOE-e4. The findings were validated in an independent cohort from the Department of Defense-Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (DOD ADNI) study. There were no significant nor trending differences in β-amyloid or tau levels or 18F-FDG uptake between the TBI and control groups before and after controlling for covariates. The β-amyloid and tau findings were replicated in the DOD ADNI validation cohort and persisted when the Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle study of aging-Veterans study (AIBL-VETS) and DOD ADNI cohorts were combined (114 TBI vs. 87 controls in total). In conclusion, no increase in the later life accumulation of the neuropathological markers of AD in veterans with a remote history of TBI was identified.

Objectives This study aims to identify and prioritize the educational needs of older adults in Iran as a prerequisite for developing any educational intervention for them. Methods & Materials In this study, the interviews and content analysis were used to identify the needs, and the Delphi method was used to prioritize them. Three target groups were experts in the fields of education and geriatrics, caregivers of older adults, and older adults. Purposive sampling was used for sampling. The final samples consisted of 45 people. Results The results of content analysis by Sterberg’s method, 13 themes were extracted which were sent to the participants for prioritization using the Delphi method. Finally, after two rounds, the participants agreed by 96% on the priority of the most needs, which were: 1) Health-promoting skills, 2) Management of negative emotions and feelings, 3) Self-knowledge, 4) Sense of satisfaction, 5) Interpersonal communication skills, and 6) Self-learning. Conclusion With age, physical health and negative emotions management skills decline and with the limitation of the circle of friends and relatives due to retirement or death, social health is also at risk. Proper knowledge about old age and acquiring self-learning skills are key elements to overcome the challenges of this period. The educational centers in Iran should provide education to older adults about health-promoting skills, how to manage negative emotions, knowledge about old age and self-learning skills, and communication skills.

Objective(s): Known as natural nanovesicles, exosomes have attracted increased attention as biocompatible carriers throughout recent years, which can provide appropriate sources for incorporating and transferring drugs to desired cells in order to improve their effectiveness and safety. Materials and Methods: This study implicates the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from adipocyte tissue (ADSCs) to acquire a proper amount of exosomes for drug delivery. As the exosomes were separated by ultracentrifugation, SN38 was entrapped into ADSCs-derived exosomes through the combination method of incubation, freeze-thaw, and surfactant treatment (SN38/Exo). Then, SN38/Exo was conjugated with anti-MUC1 aptamer (SN38/Exo-Apt), and its targeting ability and cytotoxicity towards cancer cells were investigated.Results: Encapsulation efficiency of SN38 into exosomes (58%) was significantly increased using our novel combination method. Furthermore, the in vitro results were indicative of the great cellular uptake of SN38/Exo-Apt and its significant cytotoxicity on Mucin 1 overexpressing cells (C26 cancer cells) without noticeable cytotoxicity on normal cells (CHO cells). Conclusion: The results propose that our approach developed an efficient method for loading SN38 as a hydrophobic drug into exosomes and decorating them with MUC1 aptamer against Mucin 1 overexpressing cells. So, SN38/Exo-Apt could be considered a great platform in the future for the therapy of colorectal cancer.

Background Orthopedic literature has demonstrated a significant decrease in postoperative transfusion requirements when tranexamic acid (TXA) was given during elective joint arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the empiric use of TXA in semi-urgent orthopedic procedures following injury. We hypothesized that TXA would be associated with increased rates of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) and have no effect on transfusion requirements.Methods Patients who empirically received TXA during a semi-urgent orthopedic surgery following injury (TXA+) were matched using propensity scoring to historical controls (CONTROL) who did not receive TXA. Outcomes included VTE within 6 months of injury and packed red blood cell utilization. Multivariable logistic regression and generalized linear modeling were used to determine odds of VTE and transfusion.Results 200 patients were included in each group. There was no difference in mortality between groups. TXA+ patients did not have an increase in VTE events (OR 0.680, 95% CI 0.206 to 2.248). Many studies have evaluated political power from a qualitative and quantitative perspective. But the present study tries to provide a quantitative criterion for calculation of power. To do this, using the country’s budget law, the institutions that enjoys from national budget are identified and then the officials who are at the head of those institutions from each province are identified. Then the importance coefficient of each official is calculated based on multiplication of two indicators: the allocated budget to his/her institution or organization and the duration of his/her tenure in each year. The power matrix for each province is made. Finally, the power index for Iranian provinces is calculated using methods of Simple Additive Weighting, TOPSIS, and Numerical Taxonomy. Then, according to TOPSIS method, the regions of Iran were divided into four groups. The findings show fundamental inequalities in the distribution of economic- political power in the regions of Iran during the period of 2009-2019. Also, The most fluctuations in economic-political power index have occured mainly in the middle groups. Since, most previous studies have emphasized regional inequalities in Iran based on various indicators, it seems that there is a correlation between the distribution of economic-political power and regional inequalities of Economic development. As a result, given the current status without change in the political power of the provinces, one can not expect a significant change in the economic development of the regions.

Cutaneous drug concentration quantification after topical application remains an active, yet challenging research area for topical drug development. Macroscale approaches quantify cutaneous pharmacokinetics 30 min to hours after application and miss rapid temporal and spatial dynamics that are vital to comprehend drug disposition. We have developed a 3D-printed applicator coupled with an inverted microscope and a rapidly-tunable fiber optic laser to quantify active pharmaceutical ingredients via sparse spectral sampling stimulated Raman scattering. The 3D-printed applicator is cost-effective (< $0.70/applicator) and utilizes a small formulation volume (20 µL). Ruxolitinib was formulated in two known permeation enhancers (propylene glycol and diethylene glycol monoethyl ether) that are known to display different permeation profiles to validate device capabilities. Results indicated that the applicator enabled relative-concentration monitoring immediately following drug product application. This approach has significant potential for investigating novel excipients, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and formulations to understand the permeation and biodistribution of these compounds.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful optical sensing technique used in various applications, including medicine, microbiology, and environmental analysis. Planar SERS substrates are of particular interest due to their ease of integration in lab-on-chips and better reproducibility compared to colloidal SERS. The performance of these SERS substrates is quantified using metrics such as enhancement factor, sensitivity, and reproducibility. However, there is yet to be a consensus on how to practically compare and interpret such metrics in publications and experiments. These performance metrics are strongly influenced by the nanostructures’ material, architecture, element sizes, as well as the circumstances surrounding the experiments. Understanding the effect of these characteristics on the SERS substrates’ performance could not only enable a better performance but also direct their development for different applications. Thus, we prepared a planar SERS-substrate characterization methodology to explore the correlation between the nanostructures’ physical characteristics and the performance metrics through coordinate-transformed spectroscopic measurements over structure-characterized areas. Seven commercial SERS substrates, with various surface architectures fabricated using different fabrication technologies, were studied using this benchmarking methodology. The results demonstrated how this methodology can indicate a SERS substrate’s suitability for a specific application, thus, guiding the substrate’s further adaptations or development.

For the improvement of surface roughness, titanium joint arthroplasty (TJA) components are grit-blasted with Al2O3 (corundum) particles during manufacturing. There is an acute concern, particularly with uncemented implants, about polymeric, metallic, and corundum debris generation and accumulation in TJA, and its association with osteolysis and implant loosening. The surface morphology, chemistry, phase analysis, and surface chemistry of retrieved and new Al2O3 grit-blasted titanium alloy were determined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and confocal laser fluorescence microscopy, respectively. Peri-prosthetic soft tissue was studied with histopathology. Blasted retrieved and new stems were exposed to human mesenchymal stromal stem cells (BMSCs) for 7 days to test biocompatibility and cytotoxicity. We found metallic particles in the peri-prosthetic soft tissue. Ti6Al7Nb with the residual Al2O3 particles exhibited a low cytotoxic effect while polished titanium and ceramic disks exhibited no cytotoxic effect. None of the tested materials caused cell death or even a zone of inhibition. Our results indicate a possible biological effect of the blasting debris; however, we found no significant toxicity with these materials. Further studies on the optimal size and properties of the blasting particles are indicated for minimizing their adverse biological effects.

Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are a simple diagnostic device used to detect targeted analytes. Wasted and unused rapid antigen lateral flow immunoassays represent mass waste that needs to be broken down and recycled into new material components. The aim of this study was to recover gold nanoparticles that are used as markers in lateral flow immunoassays. For this purpose, a dissolution process with aqua regia was utilised, where gold nanoparticles were released from the lateral flow immunoassay conjugate pads. The obtained solution was then concentrated further with gold chloride salt (HAuCl4) so that it could be used for the synthesis of new gold nanoparticles in the process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). Various characterisation methods including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma were used during this study. The results of this study showed that the recovery of gold nanoparticles from lateral flow immunoassays is possible, and the newly synthesised gold nanoparticles represent the possibility for incorporation into new products.

In recent years, promising technique of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) is taking a new step in improving properties of various materials, especially steels. This study is focusing on influence of selected heat treatment process involving deep cryogenic treatment on the microstructure and microstructural evolution of four different steel grades (bearing steel 100Cr6, cold work tool steel X210Cr12, hot work tool steel X38CrMoV5-3 and stainless steel X17CrNi16-2). The study was performed for different heat treatment conditions, focused on effectiveness of DCT when using different austenitizing and tempering temperatures. The evolution of the microstructure was investigated in a sequential manner with various analytical techniques. The study indicates that the microstructure and microstructural evolution and changes are strongly related to the chemical composition of steel and the predefined matrix microstructure. DCT increases precipitation of carbides and induce their more homogenous distribution. The magnitude of increased carbide precipitation after DCT is correlated with the higher carbon content, whereas the content of other alloying elements does not scale with the precipitation behavior. The obtained results indicate that incorporation of DCT with heat treatment with higher austenitizing and lower tempering temperature is the most suitable for improving steels’ properties with DCT, due to the stronger impact of DCT on the carbide precipitation and matrix modification.

The utilization of plant essential oils (EOs) and nanomaterials due to their safety compared with synthetic chemicals has been considered in the management of plant diseases. In this study, the inhibitory effects of Zataria multiflora, Nepeta haussknechtii, Artemisia sieberi, and Citrus aurantifolia EOs in pure and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanocapsulated formulations were evaluated on the mycelial growth of Alternaria solani to find a suitable alternative for synthetic chemicals. The crystal structure and morphological properties of the fabricated nanomaterials were assessed via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. The textural features of the prepared nanoparticles were investigated with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and the presence of elements in the samples was studied with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique. The mycelial growth inhibitory (MGI) was performed in the laboratory by mixing with potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium at concentrations of 100, 300, 600, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 ppm. Based on the results, major differences were monitored between different concentrations. At the highest studied concentration, the inhibition of Z. multiflora EO was 100%, which was 43.20, 42.37, and 21.19% for N. haussknechtii, A. sieberi, and C. aurantifolia, respectively, and the inhibition of their nanocapsules was 100, 51.32, 55.23, and 26.58%, respectively. In the greenhouse study, Z. multiflora EO and its nanocapsule (ZnO-ZmEO) were compared with the ZnO and chlorothalonil fungicide based on the highest inhibitory of Z. multiflora in vitro. The highest antifungal effect was related to the ZnO-ZmEO by 53.33%. Therefore, the ZnO-ZmEO formulation can be recommended as a biofungicide for managing and controlling tomato early blight disease after further research.

The impact and fracture toughness of a nanostructured, kinetically activated bainitic steel was determined using Standard methods. Prior to testing, the steel was quenched in oil and aged naturally for a period of 10 days in order to obtain a fully bainitic microstructure with a retained austenite content below 1%, resulting in a high hardness of 62HRC. The high hardness originated from the very fine microstructure of bainitic ferrite plates formed at low temperatures. It was determined that the impact toughness of the steel in the fully aged condition improved remarkably, whereas the fracture toughness was in line with expectations based on the extrapolated data available in the literature. This suggests that a very fine microstructure is most beneficial to rapid loading conditions, whereas material flaws such as coarse nitrides and non-metallic inclusions are the major limitation for obtaining a high fracture toughness.

Poverty alleviation, regional balances and balanced development are considered in all upstream documents and the development plans after the revolution in Iran. The political leaders and policy-makers have also emphasized on them continuously. Nevertheless, there are always major imbalances and differences in poverty and development levels among Iran’s provinces. In this study, unlike previous studies, regional imbalances are measured in terms of political economy. This study tries to explain regional imbalances with economicpolitical power and then adjust it with consider to population, area and distance of the provinces from the center of political power. To doing so, at first, the economic-political power matrix is formed for Iran’s provinces and then the economicpolitical power is calculated using TOPSIS method during the period of 2004-2019. After that, this matrix is adjusted using population, area and distance of provinces from capital city. The results show that even with the adjustment, economicpolitical power among regions is significantly differ. The regions cannot be considered homogeneous from the point of view of economic-political power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
