Abstract

To increase granularity in human neuroimaging science, we designed and built a next-generation 7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner to reach ultra-high resolution by implementing several advances in hardware. To improve spatial encoding and increase the image signal-to-noise ratio, we developed a head-only asymmetric gradient coil (200 mT m-1, 900 T m-1s-1) with an additional third layer of windings. We integrated a 128-channel receiver system with 64- and 96-channel receiver coil arrays to boost signal in the cerebral cortex while reducing g-factor noise to enable higher accelerations. A 16-channel transmit system reduced power deposition and improved image uniformity. The scanner routinely performs functional imaging studies at 0.35-0.45 mm isotropic spatial resolution to reveal cortical layer functional activity, achieves high angular resolution in diffusion imaging and reduces acquisition time for both functional and structural imaging.

Abstract

Purpose: Driven by the Lorentz force, acoustic noise may arguably be the next physiological challenge associated with ultra‐high field MRI scanners and powerful gradient coils. This work consisted of isolating and mitigating the main sound pathway in the NexGen 7 T scanner equipped with the investigational Impulse head gradient coil. Methods: Sound pressure level (SPL) measurements were performed with and without the RF coil to assess its acoustic impact. Vibration measurements were carried out on the gradient coil, the RF coil, and on the patient table to distinguish the different vibration mechanisms and pathways. Vibrations of the RF coil were modified by either making contact with the patient bore liner with padding material or by changing directly the RF shield with phosphor bronze mesh material. Results: SPL and vibration measurements demonstrated that eddy‐currents induced in the RF shield were the primary cause of acoustic noise. Replacing the conventional solid copper shield with phosphor bronze mesh material altered the vibrations of the RF shield and decreased SPL by 6 to 8 dB at the highest frequencies in EPI, depending on the gradient axis, while boosting the transmit B1+ field by 15%. Padding led to slightly less sound reduction on the X and Z gradient axes, but with minimal impact for the Y axis. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the potential importance of eddy‐current induced vibrations in the RF coil in terms of acoustic noise and opens new horizons for mitigation measures. Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics have been mostly studied with cardiac-gated phase contrast MRI combining signal from many cardiac cycles to create cine-phase sampling of one time-averaged cardiac cycle. The relative effects of cardiac and respiratory changes on CSF movement are not well understood. There is possible respiration-driven movement of CSF in ventricles, cisterns, and subarachnoid spaces which has not been characterized with velocity measurements. To date, commonly used cine-phase contrast techniques of velocity imaging inherently cannot detect respiratory velocity changes since cardiac-gated data acquired over several minutes randomizes respiratory phase contributions. We have developed an extremely fast, real-time, and quantitative MRI technique to image CSF velocity in simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) echo planar imaging (EPI) acquisitions of 3 or 6 slice levels simultaneously over 30s and observe 3D spatial distributions of CSF velocity. Measurements were made in 10 subjects utilizing a respiratory belt to record respiratory phases and visual cues to instruct subjects on breathing rates. A protocol is able to measure velocity within regions of brain and basal cisterns covered with 24 axial slices in 4 minutes, repeated for 3 velocity directions. These measurements were performed throughout the whole brain, rather than in selected line regions so that a global view of CSF dynamics could be visualized. Observations of cardiac and breathing-driven CSF dynamics show bidirectional respiratory motion occurs primarily along the central axis through the basal cisterns and intraventricular passageways and to a lesser extent in the peripheral Sylvian fissure with little CSF motion present in subarachnoid spaces. During inspiration phase, there is upward (inferior to superior) CSF movement into the cranial cavity and lateral ventricles and a reversal of direction in expiration phase.

Abstract

The magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) subdivisions of primate LGN are known to process complementary types of visual stimulus information, but a method for noninvasively defining these subdivisions in humans has proven elusive. As a result, the functional roles of these subdivisions in humans have not been investigated physiologically. To functionally map the M and P subdivisions of human LGN, we used high-resolution fMRI at high field (7 T and 3 T) together with a combination of spatial, temporal, luminance, and chromatic stimulus manipulations. We found that stimulus factors that differentially drive magnocellular and parvocellular neurons in primate LGN also elicit differential BOLD fMRI responses in human LGN and that these responses exhibit a spatial organization consistent with the known anatomical organization of the M and P subdivisions. In test-retest studies, the relative responses of individual voxels to M-type and P-type stimuli were reliable across scanning sessions on separate days and across sessions at different field strengths. The ability to functionally identify magnocellular and parvocellular regions of human LGN with fMRI opens possibilities for investigating the functions of these subdivisions in human visual perception, in patient populations with suspected abnormalities in one of these subdivisions, and in visual cortical processing streams arising from parallel thalamocortical pathways.

Abstract

In this thesis, I aimed to explore vocal attractiveness from an evolutionary perspective: how listener's preferences for vocal qualities of potential partners could increase mating success and reproductive success. Chapters 1-4 outline the background to the thesis, reviews acoustics, sexual selection theory, and human mate-choice. In chapter 5, I correlated attributions made to voices to the acoustic properties of the voices. In men's voices, pitch negatively predicted vocal attractiveness. Attributions of masculinity, size, age, health and vocal attractiveness were all positively correlated. In women's voices, pitch, formant dispersion and perceived health positively predicted vocal attractiveness. Masculinity, size and age negatively predicted vocal attractiveness. In chapter 6, I measured the effect of manipulating fundamental and/or formant frequencies (apparent vocal-tract length) on vocal attributions. Women found men's voices with lowered voice pitch and decreased formant dispersion more attractive, masculine, large, older and healthier. Women's size predicted preference for male vocal- tract length. In chapter 7, I explored attitudes to voices speaking vowels and whole sentences using a correlation design and acoustic manipulations. Women's self-rated attractiveness positively predicted vocal masculinity preferences. Most of the remaining studies focus on how hormones relate to vocal production and perception. Women with less oestrogen showed the biggest menstrual cycle shifts in vocal masculinity preferences, preferring masculinity most in the fertile phase (chapter 8). Men's testosterone levels predicted the size of changes in attributions of dominance to men's voices (chapter 9). Women's voice pitch correlated with facial-metric masculinity and facial attractiveness (chapter 10). Men preferred women's voices with raised pitch to lowered pitch at multiple levels of starting pitch (chapter 11). These findings indicate men preferred femininity to averageness. In chapter 12, I relate the work in this thesis to other work and the broader evolutionary perspective.

Abstract

The proposed study will investigate the relationship between voice pitch and trust perception in high and low intensity testimonies. Four hundred and forty participants will listen to audio recordings where the speaker says "that is exactly what happened" within the context of a high intensity (gun present) or low intensity (no gun present) testimony. Participants will then select yes or no when asked if they trust the speaker. Audio recordings will differ in emotion and voice pith and speakers will differ in race and sex. Demographic data will then be gathered to see how factors such as participant age and socioeconomic status moderate perceptions of trust within this context. Highlighting judgement biases that may occur in the courtroom is crucial to ensuring all individuals are given an equitable prosecution, which is the goal of the criminal justice system. Bringing further awareness to how our biases influence human perception will hopefully propel judges and jurors to be more cautious when making decisions in the courtroom.

Abstract

CHARLENE -PROVIDE REFERENCES AND PREDICTIONS ABOUT WOMEN'S VS MEN'S VOICES Low voice pitch is strongly tied to perceptions of dominance, but how voice pitch affects perceptions of trust varies across different scenarios such as politics, relationships, and finance. Our impressions of dominance varies between someone who protects us vs someone who is aggressive towards us. People's attitudes towards police also vary along this continuum. Positive community relations are paramount for in trust in police. If voice pitch can change perceptions of trust in other domains, then changes in voice pitch could also change our trust in police. In this study we focus on the scenario of police wellness checks. Attitudes towards police are very low in many communities following several recent incidences where police killed the very people they were doing wellness checks on. As a result of these poor community relations, there are now pilot programs where social workers will do wellness checks either with the police, or on their own. This study investigates the whether attitudes towards police affect the way manipulations of voice pitch change how much we trust police officers vs social workers on first impression, within the context of a wellness check. We predict that lowering voice pitch will decrease trust in communities where attitudes towards police is low as lowering pitch might be seen as aggressive, and therefore less trustworthy. By contrast we predict that in communities where trust in police is high, lowering voice pitch and sounding more dominant may be seen as a sign of being protective, and therefore more trustworthy. We predict that since social workers don't have a history of shooting people they do wellness checks on, that lowering the voice pitch of social workers will not have as strong of an effect of causing distrust in communities where attitudes towards police are negative.

This script measures Pitch (Fundamental Frequency or F0), the standard deviation thereof, jitter, shimmer, and harmonics to noise ratio (HNR). The analysis parameters are set for human female voices as a default, so if you need to run this on human males, make sure you replace the pitch floor to 60 Hz or 75 Hz, depending how low you sample goes, and the pitch ceiling with 300 Hz. I use 60 especially when I've manipulated pitch to be close to 80 Hz because it needs some breathing room. Remember if you're measuring a central tendancy of pitch, that individual values could be quite low. Leave some space, but not too much space. The script will measure the aforementioned acoustic characteristics on all of the wav files in a directory (not subdirectories). The script will ask you for a path. Make sure you put a slash at the end of the path. Don't put spaces in your filenames. Get Praat at http://www.praat.org

Abstract

This is the script I use to manipulate pitch by +/- 0.5 ERB. I've used this method in all of my papers since I switched to ERB from Hz (you can edit the script and set it to Hz if you want). It's set to default male values, with plenty of pitch floor space to make low voices. If you want to manipulate female voices, try a 100-500 Hz pitch range. The script will also normalize amplitude to 70dB using RMS. You'll need a manipulation amount, an input directory full of .wav files, and an output directory. It only does one direction of the manipulation. Make sure you add a slash at the end of any path. Make sure no spaces are in your file names.
