2. Design of Core-Shell Structured Magnetic Microwires with Desirable Properties for Multifunctional Applications

Abstract

Amorphous Co-rich microwires with excellent soft magnetic and mechanical properties produced by melt-extraction technique are emerging as a multifunctional material for a variety of applications ranging from ultrasensitive magnetic field sensors to structural health self-monitoring composites. There is a pressing need for enhancing these properties to make the microwires practical for integration into new technologies. Conventional heat treatments at temperature below crystallization may improve the magnetic softness of an as-quenched amorphous wire, but usually deteriorate the good mechanical characteristic of the wire due to crystallization. To overcome this, we propose a new approach that utilizes the advantages of a multi-step Joule current annealing method to design novel (nanocrystal, amorphous)/amorphous core/shell structures directly from as-quenched amorphous microwires. These results show that the density and size of nanocrystals in the core can be optimized by controlling the Joule current intensity, resulting in the large enhancement of soft magnetic and giant magneto-impedance properties, while the amorphous shell preserves the excellent mechanical strength of the microwire. This study also provides a new pathway for the design of novel core/shell structures directly from rapidly quenched amorphous magnetic materials that are currently exploited in high frequency transformers, sensing and cooling devices.

24. Nanotherapeutics for hydrogen sulfide-involved treatment: An emerging approach for cancer therapy

Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as the third gasotransmitter, plays important roles in promoting the growth, proliferation, and metastasis of cancer cells. Recently, emerging nanotherapeutics have been developed for cancer therapy by regulating the H2S concentration at tumor sites. The action of H2S in cancer therapy can be demonstrated by a bell-shaped dose-response curve. In addition to the H2S donation from gas therapy, reducing the level of intratumoral H2S can also exert an antitumor effect by disturbing the redox balance of tumor cells. On top of that, the integration of nanotechnology further enhances the diversity of H2S-involved cancer treatments. As a result, phototherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and ultrasonic therapy can all be realized by designing nanotherapeutics based on the physicochemical properties of H2S. Furthermore, the active/passive targeting effects and onsite H2S-regulating ability of nanotherapeutics greatly improve the safety of treatment. To track the development and promote the clinical transformation of H2S-involved nanotherapeutics, this review introduced the antitumor-related properties of H2S gas and the evolution of H2S-involved cancer therapy. Then, we discussed the design concepts and mechanisms of H2S-involved nanotherapeutics in depth. Finally, the future expectations and challenges were spotlighted in the concept of translational medicine.

Cholesterol is an important component of the tumor plasma membrane and serves an essential role in tumor initiation and progression. This review elucidates the role of cholesterol in tumorigenesis (including tumor cell proliferation, invasion/metastasis, drug resistance, and immunosuppressive microenvironment) and elaborates on the potential therapeutic targets for tumor treatment by regulating cholesterol. More meaningfully, this review provides an overview of cholesterol-integrated membrane lipid nanotherapeutics for cancer therapy through cholesterol regulation. These strategies include cholesterol biosynthesis interference, cholesterol uptake disruption, cholesterol metabolism regulation, cholesterol depletion, and cholesterol-based combination treatments. In summary, this review demonstrates the tumor nanotherapeutics based on cholesterol regulation, which will provide a reference for the further development of “membrane lipid therapy” for tumors.
