Abstract Hysteresis is an inherent property of first-order transition materials that poses challenges for solid-state refrigeration applications. Extensive research has been conducted, but the intrinsic origins of hysteresis remain poorly understood. Here, we report a study of the kinetic origin of hysteresis and the enhanced barocaloric effect (BCE) in MnCoGe-based alloys with ~2% nonmagnetic In atoms. First-principles calculations demonstrate that substituting In atoms at Ge sites rather than Co sites results in a lower energy barrier, indicating a narrower hysteresis for the former. Combining neutron powder diffraction (NPD) with magnetic and calorimetric measurements completely verified the theoretical prediction. Electron local function (ELF) calculations further reveal the atomic coordination origin of regulated hysteresis due to weaker Co–Ge bonds when In atoms replace Ge, which is opposite to Co sites. Moreover, we experimentally investigate the BCE and find that although MnCo(Ge0.98In0.02) has a lower barocaloric entropy change ΔSP than does Mn(Co0.98In0.02)Ge, the reversible ΔSrev of the former is advantageous owing to a smaller hysteresis. The maximum ΔSrev of MnCo(Ge0.98In0.02) is 1.7 times greater than that of Mn(Co0.98In0.02)Ge. These results reveal the atomic-scale mechanism regulating hysteresis and provide insights into tailoring the functional properties of novel caloric refrigeration materials.

The exposure of ethanol increases the risk of head and neck inflammation and tumor progression. However, limited studies have investigated the composition and functionality of laryngeal microbiota under ethanol exposure. We established an ethanol-exposed mouse model to investigate the changes in composition and function of laryngeal microbiota using Metagenomic shotgun sequencing. In the middle and late stages of the experiment, the laryngeal microbiota of mice exposed to ethanol exhibited obvious distinguished from that of the control group on principal-coordinate analysis (PCoA) plots. Among the highly abundant species, Salmonella enterica and Mycobacterium marinum were likely to be most impacted. Our findings indicated that the exposure to ethanol significantly increased their abundance in larynxes in mice of the same age, which has been confirmed through FISH experiments. Among the species-related functions and genes, metabolism is most severely affected by ethanol. The difference was most obvious in the second month of the experiment, which may be alleviated later because the animal established tolerance. Notable enrichments concerning energy, amino acid, and carbohydrate metabolic pathways occurred during the second month under ethanol exposure. Finally, based on the correlation between species and functional variations, a network was established to investigate relationships among microbiota, functional pathways, and related genes affected by ethanol. Our data first demonstrated the continuous changes of abundance, function and their interrelationship of laryngeal microbiota under ethanol exposure by Metagenomic shotgun sequencing. Importance: Ethanol may participate in the inflammation and tumor progression by affecting the composition of the laryngeal microbiota. Here, we applied the metagenomic shotgun sequencing instead of 16 S rRNA sequencing method to identify the laryngeal microbiota under ethanol exposure. Salmonella enterica and Mycobacterium marinum are two dominant species that may play a role in the reconstruction of the laryngeal microenvironment, as their local abundance increases following exposure to ethanol. The metabolic function is most evidently impacted, and several potential metabolic pathways could be associated with alterations in microbiota composition. These findings could help us better understand the impact of prolonged ethanol exposure on the microbial composition and functionality in the larynx.

Background: Hemorrhagic events cause numerous deaths annually worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for effective hemostatic drugs. The glucosyloxybenzyl 2-isobutylmalates Control Extract (BSCE) from the orchid plant Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Rchb.f. has demonstrated significant hemostatic activity in both in vitro and in vivo studies. However, the effect and mechanism of BSCE on non-traumatic bleeding remain unclear. Methods: Pulmonary hemorrhage was induced in 40 Sprague-Dawley rats by administering Zingiber officinale Roscoe. for 14 days. These rats were then randomly divided into five groups: model (Mod), positive control (YNBY), and BSCE low, medium, and high-dose groups. An additional 8 rats served as the control group (Con). The BSCE groups received different doses of BSCE for 10 days, while the YNBY group received Yunnan Baiyao suspension. The effects on body weight, food and water intake, red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (HGB), lung tissue pathology, platelet count, coagulation parameters, and fibrinolytic system markers were evaluated. Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses were also conducted to identify potential targets and pathways involved in BSCE's effects. Background: The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Xiaoliu Pingyi recipe (XLPYR) has been clinically used for several decades, demonstrating favorable therapeutic effects. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the anti-tumor effects of XLPYR and its regulatory role in the vascular microenvironment through in vivo and in vitro experiment. Materials and methods: In the in vivo study, a C57BL/6J mouse model of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) allografts was established, and various interventions were administered for 14 days (Model group: administered normal saline via oral gavage; Pemetrexed (PEM) group: intraperitoneally injected with a solution of pemetrexed, once every 3d; XLPYR group: administered XLPYR via oral gavage; Combination (COMBI) group: received XLPYR via oral gavage simultaneously with intraperitoneal injection of pemetrexed solution). Tumor volume and weight were then compared among the groups. The impact of XLPYR on the tumor vascular microenvironment was assessed using immunohistochemistry staining. In the in vitro study, XLPYR-containing serum was prepared by oral administration to SD rats. The CCK-8 assay evaluated the effect of the serum on the proliferation of normal lung epithelial BEAS-2B cells and LUAD A549 cells, determining the optimal intervention concentrations. The cell migration and invasion abilities were evaluated using the wound-healing assay and Transwell assay, respectively. Finally, ELISA assay measured VEGF secretion levels in the LUAD cell supernatant, and RT-qPCR and Western Blot were employed to detect differences in HIF-1α, VEGFA, Ang-2, and PI3K/Akt mRNA and protein expression levels in both in vivo and in vitro experiments. Results: In the in vivo study, XLPYR significantly inhibited the growth of mice LUAD allografts, with enhanced anti-tumor effects observed with prolonged drug intervention. Immunohistochemistry staining revealed reduced MVD and increased pericyte coverage in all intervention groups. Regarding vascular function, FITC-Dextran extravasation in the tumor tissues of the Model group was significantly higher than in the intervention groups, particularly with lower extravasation in the COMBI group compared to the PEM group. In the in vitro study, XLPYR demonstrated a time- and concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on LUAD cells, and with greater sensitivity in inhibiting LUAD cells compared to BEAS-2B cells. The wound-healing assay and Transwell assay confirmed that XLPYR significantly suppressed the migration and invasion abilities of LUAD cells. ELISA experiments further revealed a significant decrease in VEGF expression in the supernatant of each intervention group. RT-qPCR and Western Blot results showed consistent findings between the in vivo and in vitro experiments. HIF-1α, VEGFA, and Ang-2 mRNA and protein expression levels were significantly downregulated in the PEM group, XLPYR group, and COMBI group. There were no significant differences in the expression of PI3K and Akt mRNA and total protein, but the expression levels of phosphorylated p -PI3K and p -Akt were notably downregulated Conclusion: XLPYR significantly inhibited C57BL/6J mouse LUAD allograft growth and improved the vascular microenvironment, thereby intervening in tumor angiogenesis and inducing vascular normalization. It suppressed LUAD cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while reducing VEGF concentration in the cell supernatant. The regulatory mechanism may involve inhibiting PI3K/Akt protein phosphorylation and downregulating angiogenesis-related factors, such as HIF-1α, VEGF, and Ang-2.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is characterized by recurring focal seizures that arise from limbic areas and are often refractory to pharmacological interventions. We have reported that optogenetic stimulation of PV-positive cells in the medial septum at 0.5 Hz exerts seizure-suppressive effects. Therefore, we compared here these results with those obtained by optogenetic stimulation of medial septum PV-positive neurons at 8 Hz in male PV-ChR2 mice (P60-P100) undergoing an initial, pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE). Optogenetic stimulation (5 min ON, 10 min OFF) was performed from day 8 to day 12 after SE at a frequency of 8 Hz (n = 6 animals) or 0.5 Hz (n = 8 animals). Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammatory cell infiltration, which can lead to chronic disability, joint destruction and loss of function. At present, the pathogenesis of RA is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential biomarkers and immune molecular mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis through machine learning-assisted bioinformatics analysis, in order to provide reference for the early diagnosis and treatment of RA disease. Methods: RA gene chips were screened from the public gene GEO database, and batch correction of different groups of RA gene chips was performed using Strawberry Perl. DEGs were obtained using the limma package of R software, and functional enrichment analysis such as gene ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), disease ontology (DO), and gene set (GSEA) were performed. Three machine learning methods, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO), support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) and random forest tree (Random Forest), were used to identify potential biomarkers of RA. The validation group data set was used to verify and further confirm its expression and diagnostic value. In addition, CIBERSORT algorithm was used to evaluate the infiltration of immune cells in RA and control samples, and the correlation between confirmed RA diagnostic biomarkers and immune cells was analyzed. Results: Through feature screening, 79 key DEGs were obtained, mainly involving virus response, Parkinson's pathway, dermatitis and cell junction components. A total of 29 hub genes were screened by LASSO regression, 34 hub genes were screened by SVM-RFE, and 39 hub genes were screened by Random Forest. Combined with the three algorithms, a total of 12 hub genes were obtained. Through the expression and diagnostic value verification in the validation group data set, 7 genes that can be used as diagnostic biomarkers for RA were preliminarily confirmed. At the same time, the correlation analysis of immune cells found that γδT cells, CD4+ memory activated T cells, activated dendritic cells and other immune cells were positively correlated with multiple RA diagnostic biomarkers, CD4+ naive T cells, regulatory T cells and other immune cells were negatively correlated with multiple RA diagnostic biomarkers. Conclusions: The results of novel characteristic gene analysis of RA showed that KYNU, EVI2A, CD52, C1QB, BATF, AIM2 and NDC80 had good diagnostic and clinical value for the diagnosis of RA, and were closely related to immune cells. Therefore, these seven DEGs may become new diagnostic markers and immunotherapy markers for RA.

Plant-derived medicinal materials have significant potential and promising applications in wound healing and skin regeneration. This study aims to develop a plant-based extract hydrogel from Bletilla striata (Thunb.Reichb.f.), specifically a glucosyloxybenzyl 2-isobutylmalates extract (B), and characterize its potential effects on wound healing. We synthesized the hydrogel using carbomer (C), glycerol (G), and triethanolamine (T) as the matrix, incorporating B into the hydrogel base, and evaluated its physical and chemical properties. In vitro tests assessed the biocompatibility of the glucosyloxybenzyl 2-isobutylmalates-carbomer-glycerol-triethanolamine (B-CGT) hydrogel and its effects on cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion. Animal model experiments evaluated its potential to promote wound healing. The results showed that the prepared B-CGT hydrogel possessed a good three-dimensional network structure and stability, demonstrating significant free radical scavenging capacity in antioxidant tests. In cell experiments, the B-CGT hydrogel exhibited no potential cytotoxicity and showed good hemocompatibility and promotion of cell proliferation. Animal experiments indicated that wounds treated with the B-CGT hydrogel healed significantly faster, with improved formation of new epithelial tissue and collagen. This study suggests that the developed B-CGT hydrogel is a promising candidate for wound dressings, with excellent physicochemical properties and controlled drug release capabilities, effectively promoting the wound healing process.

Catamenial epilepsy, defined as a periodicity of seizure exacerbation during the menstrual cycle, affects up to 70 % of epileptic women. Seizures in these patients are often non-responsive to medication; however, our understanding of the relation between menstrual cycle and seizure generation (i.e. ictogenesis) remains limited. We employed here field potential recordings in the in vitro 4-aminopyridine model of epileptiform synchronization in female mice (P60–P130) and found that: (i) the estrous phase favors ictal activity in the entorhinal cortex; (ii) these ictal discharges display an onset pattern characterised by the presence of chirps that are thought to mirror synchronous interneuron firing; and (iii) blocking estrogen receptor β-mediated signaling reduces ictal discharge duration. Our findings indicate that the duration of 4AP-induced ictal discharges, in vitro, increases during the estrous phase, which corresponds to the human peri-ovulatory period. We propose that these effects are caused by the presumptive enhancement of interneuron excitability due to increased estrogen receptor β-mediated signaling.

【Objective】The research was carried out to clarify the field control effects of six agents on blossom blight of kiwifruit, and to screen efficient and safe agents for guiding the field production of kiwifruit.【Method】The field control experiment was carried out by using random block design, and the incidence rate and disease index of blossom blight of kiwifruit after the application of six agents were determined, and the control effects were evaluated by calculating the change values of incidence rate and disease index before and after treatment. The safety of each agent was evaluated by its effects on the growth situation of kiwifruit plants and the development characteristics of flowers and fruits.【Result】Six agents showed different control effects on blossom blight of kiwifruit, and all of them were safe to kiwifruit plants. The results of field trials showed that there was no significant difference in incidence rate and disease index between the treatment groups and the CK group before control. After two consecutive treatments, the incidence rates of treatment groups and CK group showed an increasing trend compared with those before control, and the change values of the disease situation were significantly different, among which the change value of the CK group was the largest, and the incidence rate and disease index increased by 13.29% and 6.84, respectively. The change values of kasumin • brothermothingonil and tetramycin • propyrithiazole were the smallest, with the increase of incidence rate less than 1.50% and the increase of disease index less than 1.00. The field control effect corresponded to the disease situation. After two consecutive treatments, the treatment of kasumin • brothermothingonil showed the highest control effect, followed by tetramycin • propyrithiazole, both of which were above75%. All agents had no phytotoxicity symptoms and other adverse effects on kiwifruit plants after the application of agents, and showed different degrees of flower protection, fruit protection and yield increase compared with the CK group. The results showed that among the six agents, kasumin • brothermothingonil and tetramycin • propyrithiazole were the most effective in delaying the transmission and spread of the pathogen of blossom blight of kiwifruit, reducing the disease severity, and controlling blossom blight of kiwifruit efficiently and safely.【Conclusion】Two effective and safe agents - kasumin • brothermothingonil and tetramycin • propyrithiazole are screened for blossom blight of kiwifruit, which can be promoted in field production of kiwifruit.

ABSTRACT: Green hydrophobically modified butyrylated dextrin (BD) was used to modulate casein (CN). The CN/BD complex nanoparticles were formed at different CN-to-BD mass ratios based on a pH-driven technology. The interaction force, stability, and emulsifying properties of complex nanoparticles were investigated. The nanoparticles had a negative charge and a small particle size (160.03, 152.6, 155.9, 206.13, and 231.67 nm) as well as excellent thermal stability and environmental stability (pH 4.5, 5.5, 6.6, 7.5, 8.5, and 9.5; ionic strength, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mM). Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the successful preparation of complex nanoparticles and their spherical shape. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and dissociation analysis results showed that the main driving forces of formed CN/BD nanoparticles were hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, the CN/BD nanoparticles (CN/BD mass ratio, 1:1; weight/weight) exhibited the lowest creaming index, and optical microscopy showed that it has the most evenly dispersed droplets after 7 d of storage, which indicates that the CN/BD nanoparticles had excellent emulsifying properties. Butyrylated dextrin forms complex nanoparticles with CN through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction to endow CN with superior properties. The results showed that it is possible to use pH-driven technology to form protein–polysaccharide complex nanoparticles, which provides some information on the development of novel food emulsifiers based on protein–polysaccharide nanoparticles. The study provided significant information on the improvement of CN properties and the development of emulsions based on CN.

The behavior and controlling factors of natural gas adsorption in the Jurassic continental shale in the northeastern Sichuan Basin are studied based on the organic geochemical features, mineral compositions and pore structure parameters through a series of experiments on samples from the shale. Results show that the total gas content of the shale measured on-site is 0.1–5.3 cm3/g, with an average of 0.7 cm3/g. The methane isothermal adsorption curves show a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, indicating an obvious excessive adsorption. The shale has a maximum adsorption capacity (VL) of 0.44–3.59 cm3/g, with an average of 1.64 cm3/g, lower than that of marine shale in the same basin. The organic matter content and pore structure characteristics are identified as the two main factors controlling the adsorption capacity of the shale. Micropores in the shale are the main storage space for gas to be adsorbed. Due to well developed shell laminae and interlayers in the shale, calcite plays a more important role than clay minerals in affecting the adsorption of gas to the rock. The formation temperature and water content also significantly inhibit the gas adsorption to the shale. Compared with marine shale in the basin, the Jurassic continental shale is more heterogeneous and lower in TOC values. Furthermore, with a more widely developed clayey shale lithofacies and shell limy shale lithofacies as well as relatively less developed organic pores and micropores, the continental shale is inferior to marine shale in terms of gas adsorption capacity.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to observe the relationship between education level and outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods One thousand two hundred sixty four patients after TKA in our hospital from April 2016 to April 2020 were reviewed. These patients were divided into 4 groups (A who were illiterate, B who had elementary school degree, C who had junior high school degree, D who had senior high school degree or higher) by the educational level, which was blinded to the observers. The postoperative outcomes of KSS score, pain, joint extension and flexion function were observed 1 year after discharged from hospital. Results Among 1253 patients met the inclusion criteria, the average age was 68.63 years, the average body mass was 57.73 kg. There are no distinctions among 4 groups one day after the surgery. However, the outcomes of the follow up were that, the KSS score was: 77.84 ± 10.635; 80.70 ± 8.956; 87.92 ± 8.123;91.27 ± 8.262, with significant differences (P

Digital platforms and tech giants have led to a rapid shift in values and traditional ways of working. Although “diligence” has long been essential for work success and promotion, employees in modern companies are reluctant to blindly follow this attitude. Many well–known Western companies, such as Facebook and Google, see fun in the workplace as conducive to productivity and creative behavior. We investigated the associations of fun at work with experienced fun, employees’ creative behavior, managers’ support for fun, and trust in a Chinese context using different scales. Discriminant validity was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 508 workers from Taiwan and mainland China participated in the study and completed questionnaires. A key finding was that fun at work was positively related to employees’ creative behavior. In addition, moderators of managerial support for fun and trust between the workplace and experienced fun were confirmed. These results can serve as a reference for Chinese managers who want to encourage creative behaviors and prevent negative behaviors in the workplace. In practice, results suggest that fun should be allowed more in the workplace because it could contribute to positive outcomes. However, managers should create a workplace that is fun, allows for creativity, and at the same time leads to high productivity.

Abstract Background A cessation program for hospitalized smokers is an effective strategy to achieve smoking abstinence. The effects of multiple in-hospital counseling sessions on 6-month smoking abstinence require further investigation. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the data of smokers who participated in hospital-initiated cessation programs at a medical center between 2017 and 2019. Data on age, sex, comorbidities, daily number of cigarettes, cessation motivation, nicotine dependence, cessation medications, discharge diagnosis, length of hospitalization, and intensive care unit admission were collected. We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to investigate the effect of multiple in-hospital counseling sessions on 6-month sustained smoking abstinence. Sensitivity analyses were carried out excluding participants who underwent post-discharge cessation programs and assuming that the loss to follow-up participants had failure in 6-month smoking abstinence. Results A total of 1943 participants aged ≥ 20 years were analyzed. Compared with single in-hospital counseling session, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for 2 and ≥ 3 counseling sessions were 1.44 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05 to 1.98) and 2.02 (95% CI 1.27 to 3.22), respectively, with a significant trend for increasing the number of counseling sessions (P

Background: The Helicobacter pylori epidemic in China accounts for up to a third of gastric cancers worldwide. We aim to monitor the temporal and spatial dynamics of H. pylori infection in both adults and children across China. Materials and Methods: We developed a surveillance system consisting of a data collection component that harnessed survey reports in natural populations and an analysis component that accounted for the differences in survey time and location, population age structure, and H. pylori detection method. System outputs were estimates of the prevalence of H. pylori in adults and children (aged ≤ 14 years) presented at three hierarchical levels (regional, provincial, and prefectural). Results: The overall prevalence of H. pylori infection declined sharply in adults (63.3%, 52.5%, 43.4%, and 38.7%) and less sharply in children (23.1%, 26.1%, 16.0%, and 15.7%) in 1983–1999, 2000–2009, 2010–2014, and 2015–2019, respectively. The changes were asynchronous across regions, with the most marked declines in the Northwest, the Hong Kong‐Macao‐Taiwan region, and the East. We estimated that 457.6 million adults and 44.5 million children have been infected with H. pylori, with cross‐province disparities in prevalence ranging from 24.3% to 69.3% among adults and 2.9% to 46.3% among children. In general, the risk level of gastric cancer increased as the prevalence of H. pylori increased. The correlation was statistically significant for both adult men (Spearman coefficient of correlation: 0.393, p = 0.0146) and women (0.470, p = 0.0029). Conclusions: The tracking system would be important for the continuous and stratified tracking of the Helicobacter pylori epidemic across China and can be used to furnish an evidence base for the formulation of tailored prevention strategies. Simultaneous mutations in Janus kinase 2 ( JAK2) , calreticulin , and myeloproliferative leukemia (MPL) genes are generally not considered for characterizing Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), leading to misdiagnosis. Sanger sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to detect gene mutations in patients with MPN. We retrospectively screened the data of patients with double mutations in our center and from the PubMed database. Two patients tested positive for both JAK2V617F and CALR mutations (2/352 0.57%) in our center, while data of 35 patients from the PubMed database, including 26 patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET), 6 with primary myelofibrosis (PMF), 2 with unexplained thrombosis, and 1 with polycythemia vera were screened for double mutations. Among these mutations, co-mutation of JAKV617F-CALR constituted the majority (80.0%), when compared with JAKV617F-MPL (17.1%) and CALR-MPL (2.9%) mutations. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor worldwide. Lipid metabolism is a prerequisite for the growth, proliferation and invasion of cancer cells. However, the lipid metabolism-related gene signature and its underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to establish a lipid metabolism signature risk model for survival prediction in CRC and to investigate the effect of gene signature on the immune microenvironment. Lipid metabolism-mediated genes (LMGs) were obtained from the Molecular Signatures Database. The consensus molecular subtypes were established using “ConsensusClusterPlus” based on LMGs and the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) data. The risk model was established using univariate and multivariate Cox regression with TCGA database and independently validated in the international cancer genome consortium (ICGC) datasets. Immune infiltration in the risk model was developed using CIBERSORT and xCell analyses. A total of 267 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between subtype 1 and subtype 2 from consensus molecular subtypes, including 153 upregulated DEGs and 114 downregulated DEGs. 21 DEGs associated with overall survival (OS) were selected using univariate Cox regression analysis. Furthermore, a prognostic risk model was constructed using the risk coefficients and gene expression of eleven-gene signature. Patients with a high-risk score had poorer OS compared with patients in the low-risk score group (p = 3.36e-07) in the TCGA cohort and the validationdatasets (p = 4.03e-05). Analysis of immune infiltration identified multiple T cells were associated with better prognosis in the low-risk group, including Th2 cells (p = 0.0208), regulatory T cells (p = 0.0425), and gammadelta T cells (p = 0.0112). A nomogram integrating the risk model and clinical characteristics was further developed to predict the prognosis of patients with CRC. In conclusion, our study revealed that the expression of lipid-metabolism genes were correlated with the immune microenvironment. The eleven-gene signature might be useful for prediction the prognosis of CRC patients.

Abstract Background Catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) has been introduced to treat resistant hypertension. Although the technology of RDN has been largely improved, denervation of tortuous renal arteries remains challenging. Case presentation This is a case report of a 49-year-old man with drug resistant hypertension. The patient was selected for RDN after ruling out possible causes of secondary hypertension. Computed tomography angiography showed a highly tortuous left renal artery. An Iberis multielectrode ablation catheter failed to reach the target vessel with a regular guiding catheter. A 5-French extension catheter was introduced into the proximal segment of the main left renal artery to provide extra support force, which enabled successful ablation of the highly tortuous left renal artery. His ambulatory blood pressure was significantly decreased at 1 month follow-up. Conclusions It is feasible and effective to use a guide extension catheter for denervation of highly tortuous renal arteries. The present study provides a useful method to ablate tortuous and angled renal arteries and branches.

Objective To investigate the relief of low back pain after hip arthroplasty in patients with hip joint and spinal degenerative diseases, and to discuss the effects of unilateral and bilateral hip surgery on the relief of low back pain. Methods In this retrospective study, we followed 153 patients (69 males and 84 females, age: 43–88 years) who had undergone total hip arthroplasty (THA) via a posterolateral approach and also suffered from lumbar degenerative diseases in the period of 2009 to 2019. The inclusion criteria were: (i) patients who had been diagnosed with severe hip degenerative disease and also been diagnosed with lumbar degenerative disease; (ii) patients who had undergone THA surgery; and (iii) patients who were retrospectively recruited. The exclusion criteria were: (i) patients who had undergone lumbar fusion or internal fixation surgery; or (ii) patients who had vascular claudication, history of major trauma, diabetic polyneuropathy, lumbar and pelvic infections, tumor diseases; (iii) or patients who had undergone THA because of femoral neck fracture or ankylosing spondylitis. The improvement of hip joint function and the relief of low back pain (LBP) were studied, and the effect of unilateral and bilateral THA on the relief of LBP were discussed. Hip pain and function were evaluated by the Harris Hip Score (HHS), LBP was evaluated by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and lumbar function was evaluated by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scoring system. Results The average follow‐up time was 44.3 months (24–108 months). All patients recovered smoothly without complications. The LBP VAS of 153 patients decreased from 4.13 ± 1.37 preoperatively to 1.90 ± 1.44 postoperatively. The average HHS increased from 45.33 ± 13.23 preoperatively to 86.44 ± 7.59 postoperatively at the latest follow‐up. According to Japanese Orthopaedic Association scoring system, the proportion of patients with good response to treatment in these 153 patients reached 93.46%. LBP VAS decreased from 4.18 ± 1.38 preoperatively to 1.95 ± 1.49 postoperatively in unilateral group and from 3.94 ± 1.32 preoperatively to 1.73 ± 1.23 postoperatively in bilateral group, respectively. There were only nine patients with persistent or aggravated LBP after operation. Among them, six patients underwent subsequent lumbar surgery (five patients had pain relieved after reoperation and one patient had not) and the other three patients chose conservative treatment for pain. Conclusion THA can relieve LBP while relieving hip pain and restoring hip function in patients with both hip and lumbar degenerative disease, thus possibly avoiding further spinal surgery.

BackgroundDiet property grounded on inflammatory potential, evaluated by the dietary inflammatory index (DII), has been proven to be connected with mortality, while studies of adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are scarce.ObjectiveThe purpose of this research was to evaluate the interrelationships between DII and all-cause mortality among adults with CKD.MethodsIn the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2006, we identified and evaluated data of 4,554 adults with CKD. DII scores were calculated from 24 h of dietary consumption at baseline. Vital status was followed through 31 December 2015. The association of all-cause mortality with DII score was assessed using the Kaplan–Meier curve and the Cox regression analysis.ResultsAfter an average follow-up of 132.103 months, a total of 1,246 (27.36%) deaths were recorded. The death rates in the DII tertile categories were 24.04, 26.81, and 31.23%, respectively. The Kaplan–Meier curve showed increased death risks for the high DII tertile as compared with the low DII tertile. After we adjusted for a broad range of possible confounders, the estimation between extreme tertiles of DII scores presented a positive and significant association with all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR): 1.21, 95% CI: 1.05–1.39].ConclusionOur results confirm the hypothesis that proinflammatory diets contribute to the increased all-cause mortality in adults with CKD.

In recent years, antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains have spread rapidly and widely around the world. New antibacterial drugs have emerged to develop. With the development of biological nanotechnology, two-dimensional nanomaterials have become a very promising alternative for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Based on the recent literature, the structural features and antibacterial applications of graphene materials (GMs), transition-metal dichalcogedes (TMDs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and MXenes were elaborated, the antibacterial mechanisms of those materials were discussed, such as physical/mechanical damage, lipid extraction, oxidative stress, and photothermal/photodynamic effects,etc. Finally, the antibacterial research progress and challenges of two-dimensional nanomaterials were prospected:(1) 2D materials has a unique space structure and excellent biocompatibility, so it can be used as an ideal carrier for antibacterial drugs; (2) the material has photodynamic and photothermal bactericidal effects, so it has a strong potential to cure local skin infections; (3) it can be made into antibacterial coatings to achieve simple in-situ disinfection applying to sterile medical equipment in the future.

Abstract Background Adrenal vein sampling (AVS) is the preferred method for subtyping patients with primary aldosteronism, while the procedure is technically challenging. This study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of a single-catheter approach for AVS. Methods A retrospective analysis of 106 consecutive patients who underwent AVS was performed to determine the procedural success and complication rates. Bilateral AVS procedures were performed using a single 5-Fr Tiger catheter with repeated manual reshaping. Results We successfully advanced the catheter into the bilateral adrenal veins of all patients and reached a 90.6% procedural success rate of AVS. The procedural period was 33.0 ± 8.2 min, the fluoroscopy period was 5.8 ± 1.7 min, and the diagnostic contrast used was 17.3 ± 5.5 ml. Only one patient (0.9%) had a hematoma at the femoral puncture site. No other complications were observed. The operation period gradually shortened as the cumulative number of operations increased. The number of procedures required to overcome the learning curve was about 33 cases. Conclusions The single-catheter approach is feasible and effective for AVS. Moreover, this approach required a relatively short learning curve for an inexperienced trainee.

Natural MoS2 single crystals are irradiated with Ni ions with different fluences at 1 MeV and 357 MeV. The Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter software packages are used to simulate the process of Ni-ion beam peneration through the natural MoS2 single crystal. The electronic and nuclear stopping powers, displacement per atom and atoms vacancy profiles are simulated. The results show that S atoms are susceptible to the Ni-ion irradiation of natural MoS2 single crystals. Redshifts of the out-of-plane vibrations of S atoms and in-plane Mo–S phonon mode and the magnetic hysteresis loops are both recorded in the bulk and Ni-ion-irradiated natural MoS2 single crystals.
