Abstract

We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$, $\Xi$, and $\Omega$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cos\theta$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $K\pi$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(K\pi)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $\kappa/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Abstract

We present the design, construction, and performance of a facility for the characterization of Silicon Avalanche Photodiodes in the operating temperature range between -2 $^\circ$C and 25 $^\circ$C. The system can simultaneously measure up to 24 photo-detectors, in a completely automatic way, within one day of operations. The measured data for each sensor are: the internal gain as a function of the bias voltage and temperature, the gain variation with respect to the bias voltage, and the dark current as a function of the gain. The systematic uncertainties have been evaluated during the commissioning of the system to be of the order of 1%. This paper describes in detail the facility design and layout, and the procedure employed to characterize the sensors. The results obtained from the measurement of the 380 Avalanche Photodiodes of the CLAS12-Forward Tagger calorimeter detector are then reported, as the first example of the massive usage of the facility.

4. Polarisation observables from strangeness photoproduction on a frozen spin target with CLAS at Jefferson Lab

Abstract

This thesis presents the first, preliminary, measurements of the Σ and G polarisation observables from strangeness photoproduction on a frozen spin polarised target, for the reactions γp→K⁺Λ and γp→K⁺Σ⁰. The data were collected at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the CLAS detector in Experimental Hall B in conjunction with the FROST longitudinally polarised frozen spin target and a linearly polarised photon beam in the energy range W = 1.66 to 2.32 GeV. The work forms part of a wider experimental program seeking to obtain experimental data on the excitation spectrum of the nucleon in order to better understand its structure via the measurement of polarisation observables, whose sensitivity to resonances makes them a desirable quantity to measure. By studying strangeness reactions, it may be possible to find "missing" baryon resonances, predicted by symmetric quark models but not observed in previous experiments, whose results are consistent with the di-quark model. It is thought these "missing" resonances remain undiscovered because they have different coupling strengths for different reaction channels, such as the strangeness reactions, whereas the current data is dominated by studies of πN reactions. Measurements of the photon asymmetry, Σ, have been made which agree with previous CLAS measurements, validating the use of the FROST polarised target for the measurement of other polarisation observables, such as the G beam-target double observable. The G observable was measured on the FROST target via two techniques; from beam asymmetry measurements for the two available states of target polarisation, and a novel double asymmetry method intended to combine all the available polarised data. Some inconsistencies between the G measurements for each state of target polarisation are observed, particularly at forward angles, and are much greater once dilution effects from the target material are accounted for. As well as these dilution effects, the double asymmetry technique is also limited by insufficient constraint of the associated parameters from the limited data available on the reactions studied. For K⁺Λ, the results are compared to the Kaon-MAID isobaric model calculations, both with and without the inclusion of the missing D₁₃ resonance. Both calculations are inconclusive when compared with the data, although at higher energies the calculation without the D₁₃ state better matches the trend of the results. For K⁺Σ, the model prediction, which does not include any missing states, shows agreement with the trend of the data for some of the energy bins. In light of this new data, refitting of the models should be undertaken, as the next step in the theoretical interpretation of these results. These measurements provide new information to the world dataset of polarisation observables, and with further analysis of the associated systematics of beam polarisation and dilution, the data will provide new insights into the process of strangeness photoproduction.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the spin polarisation of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilising a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300~--~700~MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarisation at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarisation in a narrow structure centred around $E_{\gamma}\sim$~570~MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom. A Legendre polynomial decomposition suggests this behaviour could be related to the excitation of the $d^*(2380)$ hexaquark.

Abstract

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to \pi^+D^0D^{*-}$ for center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60~GeV is measured precisely using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40~GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of $4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the $Y(4220)$ state and the theoretical prediction of a $D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecule. This result is the first observation of $Y(4220)$ associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional $Y(4260)$, $Y(4320)$, $Y(4360)$, $\psi(4415)$, or a new resonance, do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from $\psi(4415)$ and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement.

9. The Meson Spectroscopy Program Using the Forward Tagger with CLAS12 at Jefferson Lab

Abstract

The 12 GeV upgrade to the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) will enable a new generation of experiments in hadronic nuclear physics at Jefferson Lab, seeking to address fundamental questions in QCD. For example, confirming the existence of exotic states, suggested by both quark models and lattice calculations, would allow gluonic degrees of freedom to be explored, and may help explain the role played by gluons in the QCD interaction. In Experimental Hall B, meson spectroscopy (the MesonEx experiment) will be performed using low Q2 electron scattering to produce quasi-real photons. The scattered electron is detected at small angles by the Forward Tagger device, determining the properties of the photon on an event-by-event basis. This technique has notable advantages over real photon beams, and over hadronic beam experiments, where most experimental data exists. This article will focus on the development of the Forward Tagger by the INFN Genova group, and the proposed MesonEx experiment.

Abstract

The GlueX facility, featuring a linearly polarized 9 GeV real photon beam delivered to a large-acceptance detector system, has recently completed its first phase of running, and analysis efforts of this dataset are well underway. It has been suggested that at GlueX energies, quark systems beyond the three quark and quark-antiquark systems of baryons and mesons, such as hybrid mesons, tetraquarks and glueballs, should exist, and studies of these systems could shed new light on how quarks combine under the strong force, particularly the role played by gluons. GlueX data encompasses final states at energies where photoproduction of light scalar mesons, such as a0(980) and f0(980), can provide discriminatory evidence between various models, manifested in experimental observables such as the cross section and beam asymmetry, however many of these analyses comprise multi-particle final states, which can arise from numerous intermediate resonances formed via different production mechanisms. The work presented showcases efforts to measure the beam asymmetry of the reaction γp → pηπ, with a particular interest in future studies of the a0(980) meson, and discusses the application of longitudinal phase space plots, originally introduced by van Hove fifty years ago, as a means of optimizing event selection. This technique has found traction in several multi-particle final state analyses in GlueX, and provides an effective additional means of separately visualising meson and baryon production events with the same final state. We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$, $\Xi$, and $\Omega$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cos\theta$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $K\pi$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(K\pi)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $\kappa/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters.
