1. Seagrass ecosystems reduce disease risk and economic loss in marine farming production.

Abstract

Seaweed farming comprises over half of global coastal and marine aquaculture production by mass; however, the future of the industry is increasingly threatened by disease outbreaks. Nature-based solutions provided by enhancing functions of coinciding species or ecosystems offer an opportunity to increase yields by reducing disease outbreaks while conserving biodiversity. Seagrass ecosystems can reduce the abundance of marine bacterial pathogens, although it remains unknown whether this service can extend to reducing disease risk in a marine resource. Using a meta-analysis of articles published over the past 40 y, we find that 17 known diseases of seaweeds are attributed to bacteria that have been previously shown to be lower when associated with seagrass ecosystems. Next, we surveyed over 8,000 individual seaweeds among farms in Indonesia and found that disease risk is reduced by 75% when seaweeds are co-cultivated directly within seagrass ecosystems, compared to when seagrass ecosystems were removed. Finally, we estimate that farming seaweed with seagrass ecosystems could increase annual revenue by $292,470 - $1,015,990 USD per km2 from yield loss due to disease reduction and that ~20.7 million km2 in 107 countries and 34 territories have suitable environmental conditions for farming seaweeds with seagrass ecosystems. These results highlight the global utility for nature-based solutions as an ecologically and economically sustainable management strategy.

2. Searching For JWST's Little Red Dots

Abstract

Recent observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revealed a previously hidden population of extremely bright and compact objects between redshifts of $z \sim 4$ and $z \sim 10$. Given their extreme red colouring in the observed frame these galaxies have been dubbed Little Red Dots (LRDs). The aim of this project was to identify LRDs using photometric data from previously uninvestigated JWST datasets and to estimate their AGN fractions by fitting the spectral energy distribution of each galaxy against well calibrated templates using CIGALE. We identified a list of potential LRDs using a single colour cut of F444W-F277W $>$1.5 mag and by applying a morphological analysis. We used EAZY to estimate the (photometric) redshift and CIGALE to estimate the AGN fraction of each LRD. Overall, we identified 14 LRDs, applying accurate SED fits to 11 of them. We found that 7 of them had a high AGN fraction (with the AGN component generating more than 50\% of the observed flux), a further two LRDs had AGN contribution in excess of approximately 40\%. In total nine LRDs (our of 14) are likely to have a supermassive black hole in their centre. Interestingly, the three LRDs which could not be well fit by CIGALE displayed extremely high photometric redshifts ($z_{phot} \gtrsim 11$) and require further analysis (and may also host a supermassive black hole in their centre).

3. The Better Solution Probability Metric: Optimizing QAOA to Outperform its Warm-Start Solution

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical simulation investigation of the Warm-Start Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) as proposed by Tate et al. [1], focusing on its application to 3-regular Max-Cut problems. Our study demonstrates that Warm-Start QAOA consistently outperforms theoretical lower bounds on approximation ratios across various tilt angles, highlighting its potential in practical scenarios beyond worst-case predictions. Despite these improvements, Warm-Start QAOA with traditional parameters optimized for expectation value does not exceed the performance of the initial classical solution. To address this, we introduce an alternative parameter optimization objective, the Better Solution Probability (BSP) metric. Our results show that BSP-optimized Warm-Start QAOA identifies solutions at non-trivial tilt angles that are better than even the best classically found warm-start solutions with non-vanishing probabilities. These findings underscore the importance of both theoretical and empirical analyses in refining QAOA and exploring its potential for quantum advantage., Comment: 12 pages, 10 Figures

4. Iterative quantum optimization of spin glass problems with rapidly oscillating transverse fields

Abstract

In this work, we introduce a new iterative quantum algorithm, called Iterative Symphonic Tunneling for Satisfiability problems (IST-SAT), which solves quantum spin glass optimization problems using high-frequency oscillating transverse fields. IST-SAT operates as a sequence of iterations, in which bitstrings returned from one iteration are used to set spin-dependent phases in oscillating transverse fields in the next iteration. Over several iterations, the novel mechanism of the algorithm steers the system toward the problem ground state. We benchmark IST-SAT on sets of hard MAX-3-XORSAT problem instances with exact state vector simulation, and report polynomial speedups over trotterized adiabatic quantum computation (TAQC) and the best known semi-greedy classical algorithm. When IST-SAT is seeded with a sufficiently good initial approximation, the algorithm converges to exact solution(s) in a polynomial number of iterations. Our numerical results identify a critial Hamming radius(CHR), or quality of initial approximation, where the time-to-solution crosses from exponential to polynomial scaling in problem size. By combining IST-SAT with future classical or quantum approximation algorithms, larger gains may be achieved. The mechanism we present in this work thus presents a new path toward achieving quantum advantage in optimization.

Abstract

We demonstrate coherent control of a three-electron exchange-only spin qubit with the quantum dots arranged in a close-packed triangular geometry. The device is tuned to confine one electron in each quantum dot, as evidenced by pairwise charge stability diagrams. Time-domain control of the exchange coupling is demonstrated and qubit performance is characterized using blind randomized benchmarking, with an average single-qubit gate fidelity F = 99.84%. The compact triangular device geometry can be readily scaled to larger two-dimensional quantum dot arrays with high connectivity.

Abstract

Interfacial engineering has fueled recent development of p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PSCs), with self-assembled monolayer-based hole-transport layers (SAM-HTLs) enabling almost lossless contacts for solution-processed PSCs, resulting in the highest achieved power conversion efficiency (PCE) to date. Substrate interfaces are particularly crucial for the growth and quality of co-evaporated PSCs. However, adoption of SAM-HTLs for co-evaporated perovskite absorbers is complicated by the underexplored interaction of such perovskites with phosphonic acid functional groups. In this work, we highlight how exposed phosphonic acid functional groups impact the initial phase and final bulk crystal structures of co-evaporated perovskites and their resultant PCE. The explored surface interaction is mediated by hydrogen bonding with interfacial iodine, leading to increased formamidinium iodide adsorption, persistent changes in perovskite structure, and stabilization of bulk {\alpha}-FAPbI3, hypothesized as being due to kinetic trapping. Our results highlight the potential of exploiting substrates to increase control of co-evaporated perovskite growth.

Abstract

Abrocitinib, an oral, once-daily, Janus kinase (JAK) 1-selective inhibitor, is approved for the treatment of adults and adolescents with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). Abrocitinib has shown rapid and sustained efficacy in phase 3 trials and a consistent, manageable safety profile in long-term studies. Rapid itch relief and skin clearance are more likely to be achieved with a 200-mg daily dose of abrocitinib than with dupilumab. All oral JAK inhibitors are associated with adverse events of special interest and laboratory changes, and initial risk assessment and follow-up monitoring are important. Appropriate selection of patients and adequate monitoring are key for the safe use of JAK inhibitors. Here, we review the practical use of abrocitinib and discuss characteristics of patients who are candidates for abrocitinib therapy. In general, abrocitinib may be used in all appropriate patients with moderate-to-severe AD in need of systemic therapy, provided there are no contraindications, e.g., in patients with active serious systemic infections and those with severe hepatic impairment, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women. For patients aged ≥ 65 years, current long-time or past long-time smokers, and those with risk factors for venous thromboembolism, major adverse cardiovascular events, or malignancies, a meticulous benefit-risk assessment is recommended, and it is advised to start with the 100-mg dose, when abrocitinib is the selected treatment option.

11. Engaging Families from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds in Virtual Individualized Education Program Meetings

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education in a multitude of ways. During this time, school districts struggled to provide students with disabilities access to services and supports under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). School personnel were required to continue holding meetings to review students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) yet did not always have the resources and skills to do so. The increased digital divide between culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families and their White counterparts posed additional challenges for them, such as access to technology and lack of experience with various technology tools. Although this expedited the need for culturally responsive virtual IEP meetings, this option should continue to be provided outside of pandemic contexts. Therefore, it is critical for teachers to facilitate virtual IEP meetings creating spaces where CLD families can participate as equal partners. Utilizing the tenets of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) can help this endeavor. This article explains several recommendations for teachers and school personnel to create identity-honoring, culturally responsive IEP meetings in virtual spaces.

Abstract

A canonical feature of the constraint satisfaction problems in NP is approximation hardness, where in the worst case, finding sufficient-quality approximate solutions is exponentially hard for all known methods. Fundamentally, the lack of any guided local minimum escape method ensures both exact and approximate classical approximation hardness, but the equivalent mechanism(s) for quantum algorithms are poorly understood. For algorithms based on Hamiltonian time evolution, we explore this question through the prototypically hard MAX-3-XORSAT problem class. We conclude that the mechanisms for quantum exact and approximation hardness are fundamentally distinct. We review known results from the literature, and identify mechanisms that make conventional quantum methods (such as Adiabatic Quantum Computing) weak approximation algorithms in the worst case. We construct a family of spectrally filtered quantum algorithms that escape these issues, and develop analytical theories for their performance. We show that, for random hypergraphs in the approximation-hard regime, if we define the energy to be $E = N_{\mathrm{unsat}}-N_{\mathrm{sat}}$, spectrally filtered quantum optimization will return states with $E \leq q_m E_{\mathrm{GS}}$ (where $E_{\rm GS}$ is the ground state energy) in sub-quadratic time, where conservatively, $q_m \simeq 0.59$. This is in contrast to $q_m \to 0$ for the hardest instances with classical searches. We test all of these claims with extensive numerical simulations. We do not claim that this approximation guarantee holds for all possible hypergraphs, though our algorithm's mechanism can likely generalize widely. Abstract Recent advances in gene editing and precise regulation of gene expression based on CRISPR technologies have provided powerful tools for the understanding and manipulation of gene functions. Fusing RNA aptamers to the sgRNA of CRISPR can recruit cognate RNA-binding protein (RBP) effectors to target genomic sites, and the expression of sgRNA containing different RNA aptamers permit simultaneous multiplexed and multifunctional gene regulations. Here, we report an intracellular directed evolution platform for RNA aptamers against intracellularly expressed RBPs. We optimize a bacterial CRISPR-hybrid system coupled with FACS, and identified high affinity RNA aptamers orthogonal to existing aptamer-RBP pairs. Application of orthogonal aptamer-RBP pairs in multiplexed CRISPR allows effective simultaneous transcriptional activation and repression of endogenous genes in mammalian cells.

Abstract

North/South cooperation on the island of Ireland has grown significantly in the last twenty-six years. Still, it can be argued that the delivery of that growth has happened mainly outside the formal Strand Two structures of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement with the North South Ministerial Council and its implementation bodies presently not directly involved in some of the main flagship cross-border projects in the areas of health, infrastructure, higher and further education, research, arts and culture. Instead, the Shared Island Unit, established in September 2020 and based within the Department of the Taoiseach, has been driving the delivery of the majority of projects in these areas, in many cases without direct input from the Northern Ireland Executive. This paper reviews how informal governance has been used to enhance cooperation and solve issues due to the deliberately limiting nature of the formal Strand Two institutions.

Abstract

The exponential suppression of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in the number of elements to be reconfigured is an essential element of broken symmetry phases. This suppression is also a core bottleneck in quantum algorithms, such as traversing an energy landscape in optimization, and adiabatic state preparation more generally. In this work, we demonstrate exponential acceleration of MQT through Floquet engineering with the application of a uniform, high frequency transverse drive field. Using the ferromagnetic phase of the transverse field Ising model in one and two dimensions as a prototypical example, we identify three phenomenological regimes as a function of drive strength. For weak drives, the system exhibits exponentially decaying tunneling rates but robust magnetic order; in the crossover regime at intermediate drive strength, we find polynomial decay of tunnelling alongside vanishing magnetic order; and at very strong drive strengths both the Rabi frequency and time-averaged magnetic order are approximately constant with increasing system size. We support these claims with extensive full wavefunction and tensor network numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis. 29. Measuring the nuclear equation of state with neutron star-black hole mergers

Abstract

Gravitational-wave (GW) observations of neutron star-black hole (NSBH) mergers are sensitive to the nuclear equation of state (EOS). We present a new methodology for EOS inference with non-parametric Gaussian process (GP) priors, enabling direct constraints on the pressure at specific densities and the length-scale of correlations on the EOS. Using realistic simulations of NSBH mergers, incorporating both GW and electromagnetic (EM) selection to ensure sample purity, we find that a GW detector network operating at O5-sensitivities will constrain the radius of a $\unit[1.4]{M_{\odot}}$ NS and the maximum NS mass with $1.6\%$ and $13\%$ precision, respectively. With the same sample, the projected constraint on the length-scale of correlations in the EOS is $\geq~\unit[3.2]{MeV~fm^{-3}}$. 30. SINCERE: Supervised Information Noise-Contrastive Estimation REvisited

Abstract

The information noise-contrastive estimation (InfoNCE) loss function provides the basis of many self-supervised deep learning methods due to its strong empirical results and theoretic motivation. Previous work suggests a supervised contrastive (SupCon) loss to extend InfoNCE to learn from available class labels. This SupCon loss has been widely-used due to reports of good empirical performance. However, in this work we find that the prior SupCon loss formulation has questionable justification because it can encourage some images from the same class to repel one another in the learned embedding space. This problematic intra-class repulsion gets worse as the number of images sharing one class label increases. We propose the Supervised InfoNCE REvisited (SINCERE) loss as a theoretically-justified supervised extension of InfoNCE that eliminates intra-class repulsion. Experiments show that SINCERE leads to better separation of embeddings from different classes and improves transfer learning classification accuracy. We additionally utilize probabilistic modeling to derive an information-theoretic bound that relates SINCERE loss to the symmeterized KL divergence between data-generating distributions for a target class and all other classes.

Abstract

IntroductionMaternal intervillous monocytes (MIMs) and fetal Hofbauer cells (HBCs) are myeloid-derived immune cells at the maternal-fetal interface. Maternal reproductive history is associated with differential risk of pregnancy complications. The molecular phenotypes and roles of these distinct monocyte/macrophage populations and the influence of gravidity on these phenotypes has not been systematically investigated.MethodsHere, we used RNA sequencing to study the transcriptional profiles of MIMs and HBCs in normal term pregnancies.ResultsOur analyses revealed distinct transcriptomes of MIMs and HBCs. Genes involved in differentiation and cell organization pathways were more highly expressed in MIMs vs. HBCs. In contrast, HBCs had higher expression of genes involved in inflammatory responses and cell surface receptor signaling. Maternal gravidity influenced monocyte programming, as expression of pro-inflammatory molecules was significantly higher in MIMs from multigravidae compared to primigravidae. In HBCs, multigravidae displayed enrichment of gene pathways involved in cell-cell signaling and differentiation.DiscussionOur results demonstrated that MIMs and HBCs have highly divergent transcriptional signatures, reflecting their distinct origins, locations, functions, and roles in inflammatory responses. Furthermore, maternal gravidity influences the gene signatures of MIMs and HBCs, potentially modulating the interplay between tolerance and trained immunity. The phenomenon of reproductive immune memory may play a novel role in the differential susceptibility of primigravidae to pregnancy complications.

Abstract

Mosaic Flow is a novel domain decomposition method designed to scale physics-informed neural PDE solvers to large domains. Its unique approach leverages pre-trained networks on small domains to solve partial differential equations on large domains purely through inference, resulting in high reusability. This paper presents an end-to-end parallelization of Mosaic Flow, combining data parallel training and domain parallelism for inference on large-scale problems. By optimizing the network architecture and data parallel training, we significantly reduce the training time for learning the Laplacian operator to minutes on 32 GPUs. Moreover, our distributed domain decomposition algorithm enables scalable inferences for solving the Laplace equation on domains 4096 times larger than the training domain, demonstrating strong scaling while maintaining accuracy on 32 GPUs. The reusability of Mosaic Flow, combined with the improved performance achieved through the distributed-memory algorithms, makes it a promising tool for modeling complex physical phenomena and accelerating scientific discovery.

Abstract

In the field of phase change phenomena, the lack of accessible and diverse datasets suitable for machine learning (ML) training poses a significant challenge. Existing experimental datasets are often restricted, with limited availability and sparse ground truth data, impeding our understanding of this complex multiphysics phenomena. To bridge this gap, we present the BubbleML Dataset \footnote{\label{git_dataset}\url{https://github.com/HPCForge/BubbleML}} which leverages physics-driven simulations to provide accurate ground truth information for various boiling scenarios, encompassing nucleate pool boiling, flow boiling, and sub-cooled boiling. This extensive dataset covers a wide range of parameters, including varying gravity conditions, flow rates, sub-cooling levels, and wall superheat, comprising 79 simulations. BubbleML is validated against experimental observations and trends, establishing it as an invaluable resource for ML research. Furthermore, we showcase its potential to facilitate exploration of diverse downstream tasks by introducing two benchmarks: (a) optical flow analysis to capture bubble dynamics, and (b) operator networks for learning temperature dynamics. Abstract

Using observations with e-MERLIN and the VLA, together with archival data from ALMA, we obtain high-resolution radio images of two binary YSOs: L1551 IRS 5 and L1551 NE, covering a wide range of frequencies from 5 - 336 GHz, and resolving emission from the radio jet on scales of only ~15 au. By comparing these observations to those from a previous epoch, it is shown that there is a high degree of variability in the free-free emission from the jets of these sources. In particular, the northern component of L1551 IRS 5 shows a remarkable decline in flux density of a factor of ~5, suggesting that the free-free emission of this source has almost disappeared. By fitting the spectra of the sources, the ionised mass-loss rates of the jets are derived and it is shown that there is significant variability of up to a factor of ~6 on timescales of ~20 years. Using radiative transfer modelling, we also obtained a model image for the jet of the southern component of L1551 IRS 5 to help study the inner region of the ionised high-density jet. 43. A Scoping Review of Research Trends and Future Directions for Research on the Experiences of Autistic Students and Staff in Post-Secondary Education

Abstract

Numbers of autistic students and staff studying or working in post-secondary educational settings have grown since the international adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). This has been accompanied by an increase in research exploring their experiences in these settings. This scoping review sought to develop an overview of research trends in this area and identify important considerations for future research. Systematic database searches identified 93 peer-reviewed articles. Data were extracted to summarise research trends from January 2007 to June 2021. Results showed a substantial increase in studies since 2017. Studies were largely confined to the USA and focused on the experiences of autistic students. Only five studies addressed the experiences of autistic staff. The student-focused literature was primarily based in university settings and explored a range of topics, including academic experiences and experiences of support services. There was a limited focus on the social and physical environments in post-secondary settings for autistic students and staff, and there was limited research on the experiences of autistic staff specifically. The current review points to the need for greater collaboration with and involvement of the autism community in research that has implications for their lives.

44. 'I Think It Depends on Who You Have, I Was Lucky I Had a Teacher Who Felt Comfortable Telling All This Stuff'. Teacher Comfortability: Key to High-Quality Sexuality Education?

Abstract

This paper reports on a research project that heard the perspectives on and experiences of the Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) programme of a range of stakeholders in post-primary schools. The researchers listened to students aged from 13 to 18 years, to teachers of RSE, to principals and to parents/guardians in six post-primary schools across the Republic of Ireland. We found that teacher comfortability is one of the key components in the delivery of high-quality and effective RSE. By 'comfortability' we mean knowledge, expertise, confidence and appropriate pedagogical skills to teach this particular material. This view was shared by students, teachers, principals as well as some parents who commented on this aspect of RSE. We found that there are several factors that impede teacher comfortability, namely lack of qualification in Social Personal and Health Education/RSE, lack of initial teacher education input in this area, limited access to continuing professional development, an absence of mandated curriculum content and fear of external criticism especially by parents. Our findings are very similar to those of the NCCA [2019. Report on the Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) in Primary and Post-Primary Schools. December. Dublin: NCCA] evaluation that took place in a similar time-frame and included a similar range of participants.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

Recording soundscapes in coral reef ecosystems provides an efficient, non-invasive method for ecosystem monitoring and conservation. This study assesses the ecological relevance of coral reef soundscapes, validating their utility for conservation decision-making. Using the Soundscape Code—a method that summarizes soundscape amplitude, impulsiveness, periodicity, and uniformity—we analyzed habitat differentiation across 25 simultaneous recordings from back, flat, and fore reef zones. Benthic composition analysis identified two distinct healthy habitat types: one dominated by branching corals and another without a dominant coral growth form. Acoustic analysis revealed these habitats also had unique nighttime soundscapes, driven by amplitude (loudness) and uniformity (sound diversity) differences linked to fish and invertebrate activity. This alignment between benthic structure and nocturnal soundscape patterns suggests that reef soundscapes reflect both benthic composition and the associated biological communities, including cryptic invertebrates and nocturnal fish. Our findings underscore the potential of nighttime soundscapes and the Soundscape Code as valuable tools for coral reef monitoring and management, with practical applications for ecosystem assessment and restoration planning.

48. Skin in the game: epidemiology analysis of skin cancer in rural Western Victoria

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this clinical review was to evaluate the number and types of skin cancer excised by GPs in a rural clinic in South West Victoria, Australia, and analyse the number needed to treat (NNT, a common metric for evaluating skin cancer detection) and the influence of clinician experience on diagnostic accuracy. Methods: This retrospective audit of patient records was for two discrete time periods (14 October 2019 to 5 November 2020 and 1 February 2021 to 17 February 2022). Data extracted included number of lesions removed, location of lesions, skin cancers detected, and patient and clinician characteristics. Results: A total of 789 lesions were excised; of these, 449 (56.9%) were histologically confirmed to be malignant. Males were statistically more likely to be diagnosed with a malignancy (p≤0.001). The NNTs for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers were 5.4 and 1.4, respectively. Experienced GPs (>5 years experience) were better at detecting melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers than their junior colleagues. Conclusion: This study investigated the demographic characteristics of rural skin cancer patients and the diagnostic skills of GPs in South West Victoria. Results obtained found males had a higher risk of skin cancer than females. The diagnostic accuracy for all skin cancers improved with clinician experience and a lower overall NNT for both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers when compared to existing literature. Differences in this may highlight the experience, exposure, and professional interest of rural GPs, addressing a lack of specialist services in the area.

Abstract

Background Clinical specialist physiotherapist-led musculoskeletal triage clinics were introduced nationally in Ireland in 2011 to improve patient care and reduce waiting times for secondary care orthopaedics and rheumatology. Evidence has shown them to be effective in reducing waiting lists, however there are currently no data on longitudinal patient outcomes following attendance at these clinics. The primary aim of this prospective, cohort study is to identify predictors of clinical outcome (pain and function) at 12-months post MSK-triage appointment. Secondary aims are to describe the clinical course of patients attending MSK triage clinics and measure self-reported use of healthcare resources up to 12 months post-MSK-triage appointment. This is a prospective cohort study. Methods ADvAnced PhysioTherapy in MuSculosKeletal Triage (ADAPT MSK) will recruit a cohort of 252 adults through musculoskeletal triage clinics across five secondary care sites in Ireland. The STrengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines will be adhered to for future reporting. Adults (≥ 18 years old) attending physiotherapist-led musculoskeletal triage clinics with musculoskeletal pain, who do not require surgical or consultant-led medical care will be considered for participation in this study. Participant demographics, health literacy, healthcare utilisation, and self-report questionnaires on pain, function, musculoskeletal health status, musculoskeletal risk stratification, fear of movement, and psychological distress will be obtained at baseline, with follow-ups at three, six, and 12 months. The primary outcomes are pain intensity and function. Secondary outcomes include musculoskeletal risk stratification status, musculoskeletal health status, healthcare utilisation, and work status. Descriptive statistics will be used to profile the cohort of participants and predictors of outcome will be assessed using multivariable linear regression. Results Results will be disseminated via peer-reviewed journal publication and presentation at national and international conferences. Engagement with a public patient involvement (PPI) panel will explore dissemination strategies for public and service user engagement.

Abstract

Introduction: The transition from pediatric to adult care poses challenges for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with chronic conditions and their caregivers. A patient navigator (PN) intervention may mitigate transition-related barriers. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted within a pragmatic randomized controlled trial. A purposive sample was recruited of AYA with diverse diagnostic and demographic characteristics who worked with the PN and/or their caregivers. Seventeen participants completed semi-structured interviews at baseline and post-intervention and optional journal entries. Thematic analysis was used inductively. Results: Analysis yielded two themes from baseline interviews: 1) uncertainty and hesitation with leaving a place of support, 2) navigator assistance with post-secondary education, and three themes from post-intervention interviews: 1) emotional support, 2) informational and task-focused support, 3) navigator guidance to become more independent. Discussion: Our findings describe the needs of AYA and the experience of PN support; our findings may guide future implementation of PNs in transition care.
