Search

After a successful kick-off meeting in 2021. two workshops in 2022 and 2023 on the future Global Cosmic-Ray Observatory (GCOS) focused mainly on a straw man design of the detector and science possibilities for astro- and particle physics. About 100 participants gathered for in-person and hybrid panel discussions. In this report, we summarize these discussions, present a preliminary straw-man design for GCOS and collect short write-ups of the flash talks given during the focus sessions., Comment: 48 pages, 27 figures

We provide comprehensive calculations of total muon fluxes, energy and angular spectra, and mean muon energies in deep underground laboratories - under flat overburdens and mountains and underwater - using our latest calculation code, MUTE v3. For precise modeling, we compiled rock densities and chemical compositions for various underground labs, as well as topographic map profiles of overburdens, and integrated them into our calculations. Our results show excellent agreement with available data for most underground sites when using the latest surface muon flux model, daemonflux. Moreover, since our calculations do not rely on underground measurements of muons or other secondaries, we can verify the consistency of measurements across different detectors at different sites. MUTE is an open-source, publicly available program, providing a solid framework for accurate muon flux predictions in various underground environments, essential for applications in cosmic ray physics and dark matter searches.

In the last decade, an increasing number of datasets have revealed a consistent discrepancy between the number of muons measured in ultra-high-energy extensive air showers (EAS) and the numbers predicted by simulations. This gap persists despite incorporating Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data into the tuning of current hadronic interaction models, leading to the phenomenon often termed the ''muon puzzle''. To gain a deeper understanding of the potential origins of this muon puzzle, we have developed Sibyll$^{\bigstar}$, a series of phenomenologically modified versions of Sibyll 2.3d. In these models, we have increased muon production by altering $\rho^0$, baryon-antibaryon pair, or kaon production in hadronic multiparticle production processes. These variants remain within bounds from provided by accelerator measurements, including those from the LHC and fixed-target experiments, notably NA49 and NA61, showing a level of consistency comparable to Sibyll 2.3d. Our findings show that these modifications can increase the muon count in EAS by up to 35%, while minimally affecting the depth of shower maximum ($X_{\rm max}$) and other shower variables. Additionally, we assess the impact of these modifications on various observables, including inclusive muon and neutrino fluxes and the multiplicities of muon bundles in deep underground and water/ice Cherenkov detectors. We aim for at least one of these model variants to offer a more accurate representation of EAS data at the highest energies, thereby enhancing the quality of Monte Carlo predictions used in training neural networks. This improvement is crucial for achieving more reliable data analyses and interpretations.

We present the AM$^3$ ("Astrophysical Multi-Messenger Modeling") software. AM$^3$ is a documented open source software that efficiently solves the coupled integro-differential equations describing the temporal evolution of the spectral densities of particles interacting in astrophysical environments, in-cluding photons, electrons, positrons, protons, neutrons, pions, muons, and neutrinos. The software has been extensively used to simulate the multi-wavelength and neutrino emission from active galactic nuclei (including blazars), gamma-ray bursts, and tidal disruption events. The simulations include all relevant non-thermal processes, namely synchrotron emission, inverse Compton scattering, photon-photon annihilation, proton-proton and proton-photon pion production, and photo-pair production. The software self-consistently calculates the full cascade of primary and secondary particles, including non-linear feedback processes and predictions in the time domain. It also allows to track separately the particle densities produced by means of each distinct interaction processes, including the different hadronic channels. With its efficient hybrid solver combining analytical and numerical techniques, AM$^3$ combines efficiency and accuracy at a user-adjustable level. Current simulations of air showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) do not satisfactorily describe recent experimental data, particularly when looking at the muonic shower component relative to the electromagnetic one. Discrepancies can be seen in both average values and on an individual shower-by-shower basis. It is thought that the muonic part of the air showers isn't accurately represented in simulations, despite various attempts to boost the number of muons within standard hadronic interaction physics. In this study, we investigate whether modifying the final state of events created with Sibyll~2.3d in air shower simulations can achieve a more consistent description of the muon content observed in experimental data. We create several scenarios where we separately increase the production of baryons, $\rho^0$, and strange particles to examine their impact on realistic air shower simulations. Our results suggest that these ad-hoc modifications can improve the simulations, providing a closer match to the observed muon content in air showers. One side-effect of the increased muon production in the considered model versions is a smaller difference in the predicted total muon numbers for proton and iron showers. However, more research is needed to find out whether any of these adjustments offers a realistic solution to the mismatches seen in data, and to identify the precise physical process causing these changes in the model. We hope that these modified model versions will also help to develop improved machine-learning analyses of air shower data and to estimate sys.{} uncertainties related to shortcomings of hadronic interaction models.

Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays, EECRs -- cosmic rays with energies beyond the GZK cutoff (i.e. greater than 100 EeV) are scarce. Only a few of such events have been detected by air shower experiments and the nature of the primary particles are still unknown. Individual EECRs sources become more prominent, relative to the background, as the horizon diminishes. We show that an event-by-event, composition-dependent observatory would allow us to limit the character of the sources and learn about the intervening magnetic fields, as the deflections in the intervening Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields depend on the nature of the particle. The atmospheric lepton fluxes play a crucial role in many particle and astroparticle physics experiments, e.g. in establishing the neutrino signal and the muon background for neutrino oscillation measurements, or the atmospheric background for astrophysical neutrino searches. The Matrix Cascade Equations (MCEq) code is a numerical tool used to model the atmospheric lepton fluxes by solving a system of coupled differential equations for particle production, interaction, and decay at extremely low computational costs. Previously, the MCEq framework only accommodated longitudinal development of air showers, an approximation that works well for neutrino and muon fluxes at high energies (O(10 GeV) and above). However, for accurate calculations of atmospheric lepton angular distributions at lower energies, the lateral component of hadronic cascades becomes significant, necessitating three-dimensional calculation schemes. We introduce "2D MCEq", an efficient numerical approach for combined longitudinal and angular evolution of air showers that retains the low computational complexity. The accuracy of the "2D MCEq" is affirmed by its benchmark comparison with the standard Monte Carlo code CORSIKA. In this paper, we present a refined calculation of the atmospheric neutrino flux spanning from GeV to PeV energies. Our method, Daemonflux, utilizes data-driven inputs and incorporates adjustable parameters to take their uncertainties into account. By optimizing these parameters using a combination of muon data and constraints from fixed-target experiments, we achieve uncertainties in the calculated neutrino fluxes of less than 10% up to 1 TeV, with neutrino ratios constrained to below 10%. Our model performs particularly well at energies below 100 GeV, where the smallest errors are obtained. We make our model available as a software package that provides access to predictions of fluxes, ratios, and errors, including the covariance matrix obtained from the fit., Comment: 21 pages, 23 figures

The origin of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays is a 60-year old mystery. We show that with more events at the highest energies (above 150~EeV) it may be possible to limit the character of the sources and learn about the intervening magnetic fields. Individual sources become more prominent, relative to the background, as the horizon diminishes. An event-by-event, composition-dependent observatory would allow a ``tomography'' of the sources as different mass and energy groups probe different GZK horizons. A major goal here is to provide a methodology to distinguish between steady and transient or highly variable sources. Using recent Galactic magnetic field models, we calculate ``treasure'' sky maps to identify the most promising directions for detecting Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays (EECR) doublets, events that are close in arrival time and direction. On this basis, we predict the incidence of doublets as a function of the nature of the source host galaxy. Based on the asymmetry in the distribution of time delays, we show that observation of doublets might distinguish source models. In particular the Telescope Array hotspot could exhibit temporal variability as it is in a ``magnetic window'' of small time delays. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are bright millisecond-duration radio transients that appear about 1,000 times per day, all-sky, for a fluence threshold 5 Jy ms at 600 MHz. The FRB radio-emission physics and the compact objects involved in these events are subjects of intense active debate. To better constrain source models, the Bustling Universe Radio Survey Telescope in Taiwan (BURSTT) is optimized to discover and localize a large sample of rare, high-fluence, nearby FRBs. This is the population most amenable to multi-messenger, multi-wavelength follow-up, allowing deeper understanding of source mechanisms. BURSTT will provide horizon-to-horizon sky coverage with a half power field-of-view (FoV) of $\sim$10$^{4}$ deg$^{2}$, a 400 MHz effective bandwidth between 300-800 MHz, and sub-arcsecond localization, made possible using outrigger stations hundreds to thousands of km from the main array. Initially, BURSTT will employ 256 antennas. After tests of various antenna designs and optimization of system performance we plan to expand to 2048 antennas. We estimate that BURSTT-256 will detect and localize $\sim$100 bright ($\geq$100 Jy ms) FRBs per year. Another advantage of BURSTT's large FoV and continuous operation will be greatly enhanced monitoring of FRBs for repetition. The current lack of sensitive all-sky observations likely means that many repeating FRBs are currently cataloged as single-event FRBs., Comment: Published version

The leading contribution to the uncertainties of atmospheric neutrino flux calculations arise from the cosmic-ray nucleon flux and the production cross sections of secondary particles in hadron-air interactions. The data-driven model developed in this work parametrizes particle yields from fixed-target accelerator data. The propagation of errors from the accelerator data to the inclusive muon and neutrino flux predictions results in smaller uncertainties than in previous estimates, and the description of atmospheric flux data is good. Compilation of the six contributions to the ICRC conference 2021 by the CORSIKA 8 Collaboration. The status of the project is illustrated. In particular, the secondary hadron as well as the electromagnetic cascades are being validated individually, and current results are reviewed. A novel framework for radio emission simulations is presented, which is designed given the modular nature of CORSIKA 8 to support, both, the CoREAS as well as the ZHS formalism. At the same time, first Cherenkov emission calculations are shown which are based on CORSIKA 8 coupled with a GPU Cherenkov emission code. Cosmic ray muons detected by deep underground and underwater detectors have served as an information source on the high-energy cosmic ray spectrum and hadronic interactions in air showers for almost a century. The theoretical interest in underground muons has nearly faded because space-borne experiments probe the cosmic ray spectrum more directly, and accelerators provide precise measurements of hadron yields. However, underground muons probe unique hadron interaction energies and phase space, which are still inaccessible to present accelerator experiments. The cosmic ray nucleon energies reach the hundred-TeV and PeV ranges, which are barely accessible with space-borne experiments. Our new calculation combines two modern computational tools: MCEq, for surface muon fluxes, and PROPOSAL, for underground transport. We demonstrate excellent agreement with measurements of cosmic ray muon intensities underground within estimated errors. Beyond that, the precision of historical data turns out to be significantly smaller than our error estimates. This result shows that the sources of high-energy atmospheric lepton flux uncertainties at the surface or underground can be significantly constrained without taking more data or building new detectors. While biologists have not yet reached a consensus on the definition of life, homochirality - the specific molecular handedness of biomolecules - is a phenomenon only produced by life. The unraveling of its origin requires interdisciplinary research, by exploring fundamental physics, chemistry, astrophysics and biology. Here, we consider the origin of biological homochirality in the context of astrophysics and particle physics. The weak force, one of the fundamental forces operating in nature, is parity-violating. On Earth, at ground level, most of our cosmic radiation dose comes from polarized muons formed in a decay involving the weak force. We discuss how the magnetic polarization is transmitted in cosmic showers within several different environments which are prime targets in the search for the origin of life. High-energy cosmic rays are observed indirectly by detecting the extensive air showers initiated in Earth's atmosphere. The interpretation of these observations relies on accurate models of air shower physics, which is a challenge and an opportunity to test QCD under extreme conditions. Air showers are hadronic cascades, which eventually decay into muons. The muon number is a key observable to infer the mass composition of cosmic rays. Air shower simulations with state-of-the-art QCD models show a significant muon deficit with respect to measurements; this is called the Muon Puzzle. The origin of this discrepancy has been traced to the composition of secondary particles in hadronic interactions. The muon discrepancy starts at the TeV scale, which suggests that this change in hadron composition is observable at the Large Hadron Collider. An effect that can potentially explain the puzzle has been discovered at the LHC, but needs to be confirmed for forward produced hadrons with LHCb, and with future data on oxygen beams., Comment: invited review submitted to Astrophysics and Space Science

It has been proposed that spin-polarized cosmic radiation can induce asymmetric changes in helical biopolymers that may account for the emergence of biological homochirality. The parity violation in the weak interaction has direct consequences on the transport of polarization in cosmic ray showers. In this paper, we show that muons retain their polarization down to energies at which they can initiate enantioselective mutagenesis. Therefore, muons are most likely to succeed in establishing the connection between broken symmetries in the standard model of particle physics and that found in living organisms. We calculate the radiation doses deposited by primary and secondary cosmic rays at various prime targets for the searches of life in the solar system: Mars, Venus, Titan, icy moons and planetesimals, and discuss the implications for the enantioselective mutagenesis proposed as to be the driver of homochiralization. We scrutinize the paradigm that conventional long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the dominant source of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) within the internal shock scenario by describing UHECR spectrum and composition and by studying the predicted (source and cosmogenic) neutrino fluxes. Since it has been demonstrated that the stacking searches for astrophysical GRB neutrinos strongly constrain the parameter space in single-zone models, we focus on the dynamics of multiple collisions for which different messengers are expected to come from different regions of the same object. We propose a model which can describe both stochastic and deterministic engines, which we study in a systematic way. We find that GRBs can indeed describe the UHECRs for a wide range of different model assumptions with comparable quality albeit with the previously known problematic energy requirements; the heavy mass fraction at injection is found to be larger than 70% (95% CL). We demonstrate that the post-dicted (from UHECR data) neutrino fluxes from sources and UHECR propagation are indeed below the current sensitivities but will be reached by the next generation of experiments. Depending on their type, supernova remnants may have ejecta material with high abundance of heavy elements such as carbon or oxygen. In addition, core-collapse supernovae explode in the wind material of their progenitor star that may also have a high abundance of heavy elements. Hadronic collisions in these enriched media spawn the production of gamma rays, neutrinos, and secondary electrons with spectra that cannot be scaled from those calculated for pp collisions, potentially leading to erroneous results. We used Monte-Carlo event generators to calculate the differential production rate of particles such as gamma rays, neutrinos, and secondary electrons for H, He, C, and O nuclei as projectiles and as target material. The cross sections and the multiplicity spectra are separately computed for each of the 16 combinations of projectile and target. We present a new version of the hadron interaction event generator Sibyll. While the core ideas of the model have been preserved, the new version handles the production of baryon pairs and leading particles in a new way. In addition, production of charmed hadrons is included. Updates to the model are informed by high-precision measurements of the total and inelastic cross sections with the forward detectors at the LHC that constrain the extrapolation to ultra-high energy. Minimum-bias measurements of particle spectra and multiplicities support the tuning of fragmentation parameters. This paper demonstrates the impact of these changes on air shower observables such as $X_{\rm max}$ and $N_\mu$, drawing comparisons with other contemporary cosmic ray interaction models.

We use the Matrix Cascade Equation code (MCEq) to evaluate the range of applicability of simple analytic approximations parameterized by spectrum-weighted moments and power-law spectral indices that vary slowly with energy. We compare spectra of leptons as a function of zenith angle and energy between MCEq and the analytic approximation. We also compare fluxes obtained with different models of hadronic interactions. The goal is to quantify the effects of the approximations inherent in the simpler formulas in order to determine their limitations and the conditions under which they may be used. Specifically we look for the range of phase space for which the errors in the approximate formulas are smaller than the differences among several different hadronic interaction models. The IceCube Neutrino Detector observes tens of thousands of atmospheric neutrinos every year with its low energy extension DeepCore, covering the neutrino energy range from GeV to TeV. These neutrinos can be used to study particle interactions in conditions that are inaccessible to current accelerator-based experiments. Here, we present constraints concerning the production of light and strange mesons in atmospheric particle cascades using a dedicated analysis based on the shape of the neutrino spectrum in zenith and energy. The general features of the neutrino flux from cosmic ray interactions in the Earth's atmosphere are well characterized. However, the absolute precision of calculations is still insufficient and the uncertainty from the modeling of hadronic interactions in the very forward region remains a major limitation. In this work, we benchmark the current generation hadronic models using high-precision atmospheric muon calculations from a few GeV to multiple TeV energies provided by the MCEq code. We derive corrections to hadronic models using publicly available measurements of the flux and charge ratio of atmospheric muons from surface and underground detectors. When combining data, the experimental uncertainties are taken into account. We discuss the calibration method and the strength of the derived constraints., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. We discuss possible interpretations of the neutrinos observed from the AGN blazar TXS 0506+056 in the multi-messenger and multi-wavelength context, including both the 2014-15 and 2017 neutrino flares. While the neutrino observed in September 2017 has to describe contemporary data in e.g. the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray ranges, data at the 2014-15 excess are much sparser. We demonstrate that in both cases the simplest possible one-zone AGN blazar models face challenges. While the 2017 flare can be well interpreted by considering more sophisticated source geometries, the 2014-15 flare is much harder to describe with conventional models. One challenge is the energy injected into the electromagnetic cascade coming together with the neutrino production, which cannot be reconciled with the 13 observed neutrino events. We discuss the production of multiple astrophysical messengers (neutrinos, cosmic rays, gamma-rays) in the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) internal shock scenario, focusing on the impact of the collision dynamics between two shells on the fireball evolution. In addition to the inelastic case, in which plasma shells merge when they collide, we study the Ultra Efficient Shock scenario, in which a fraction of the internal energy is re-converted into kinetic energy and, consequently, the two shells survive and remain in the system. We find that in all cases a quasi-diffuse neutrino flux from GRBs at the level of $10^{-11}$ to $10^{-10} \, \mathrm{GeV \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1} \, sr^{-1}}$ (per flavor) is expected for protons and a baryonic loading of ten, which is potentially within the reach of IceCube-Gen2. The highest impact of the collision model for multi-messenger production is observed for the Ultra Efficient Shock scenario, that promises high conversion efficiencies from kinetic to radiated energy. However, the assumption that the plasma shells separate after a collision and survive as separate shells within the fireball is found to be justified too rarely in a multi-collision model that uses hydrodynamical simulations with the PLUTO code for individual shell collisions., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures; version accepted for ApJ; revised diskussion in section 6

Electromagnetic-Cascades (EmCa) is a Python package for the simulation of electromagnetic cascades in various materials. The showers are modeled using cascade equations and the relevant interactions, specifically pair production, Bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering and ionization. This methodology has the advantage of being computationally inexpensive and fast, unlike Monte Carlo methods. The code includes low and high energy material effects, allowing for a high range of validity of the simulation results. EmCa is easily extendable and offers a framework for testing different electromagnetic interaction models. In combination with MCEq, a Python package for hadronic particle showers using cascade equations, full simulations of atmospheric fluxes can be done., Comment: Disagreement between authors

Photon-hadronic interactions are important for the sources and the transport of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). Current state-of-the-art cosmic ray transport simulations handle nuclear disintegration at energies of the Giant Dipole Resonance at a more sophisticated level, as well as the photohadronic interactions of nucleons in the high-energy regime above the pion production threshold. However, the interactions of nuclei above the pion production threshold are commonly modeled by treating the nucleus as a superposition of free nucleons -- ignoring the effect of the nuclear medium. We construct an improved, inclusive model for the photomeson regime for nuclei with $A \leq 56$ by employing more accurate, data-driven parametrizations of the interaction cross section, the fragmentation of the primary nucleus and the inclusive pion production cross section that directly affects the production of astrophysical neutrinos. We apply our results to two multi-messenger scenarios (Tidal Disruption Events and Gamma-Ray Bursts) in which photonuclear interactions in the photomeson regime are the dominant cooling process for the highest energy cosmic rays. While we find moderate changes to the mass composition of UHECRs, the astrophysical neutrino fluxes exhibit a significant (factor of a few) reduction compared to the na\"ive superposition of free nucleons for sources of UHECR nuclei with a populated cascade. We study the implications of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) data from the Pierre Auger Observatory for potential accelerator candidates and cosmogenic neutrino fluxes for different combinations of nuclear disintegration and air-shower models. We exploit the most recent spectral and mass composition data (2017) with a new, computationally very efficient simulation code PriNCe. We extend the systematic framework originally developed by the Pierre Auger Collaboration with the cosmological source evolution as an additional free parameter. In this framework, an ensemble of generalized UHECR accelerators is characterized by a universal spectral index (equal for all injection species), a maximal rigidity, and the normalizations for five nuclear element groups. We find that the 2017 data favor a small but constrained contribution of heavy elements (iron) at the source. We demonstrate that the results moderately depend on the nuclear disintegration (PSB, Peanut, or Talys) model, and more strongly on the air-shower (EPOS-LHC, Sibyll-2.3, or QGSjet-II-04) model. Variations of these models result in different source evolutions and spectral indices, limiting the interpretation in terms of a particular class of cosmic accelerators. Better constrained parameters include the maximal rigidity and the mass composition at the source. Hence, the cosmogenic neutrino flux can be robustly predicted, since it originates from interactions with the cosmic infrared background and peaks at $10^8 \, \mathrm{GeV}$. Depending on the source evolution at high redshifts the flux is likely out of reach of future neutrino observatories in most cases, and a minimal cosmogenic neutrino flux cannot be claimed from data without assuming a cosmological distribution of the sources., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. We investigate whether the emission of neutrinos observed in 2014-15 from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 can be accommodated with leptohadronic multi-wavelength models of the source commonly adopted for the 2017 flare. While multi-wavelength data during the neutrino flare are sparse, the large number of neutrino events ($13\pm5$) challenges the missing activity in gamma rays. We illustrate that two to five neutrino events during the flare can be explained with leptohadronic models of different categories: a one-zone model, a compact core model, and an external radiation field model. If, however, significantly more events were to be accommodated, the predicted multi-wavelength emission levels would be in conflict with observational X-ray constraints, or with the high-energy gamma ray fluxes observed by the Fermi LAT, depending on the model. For example, while the external radiation field model can predict up to five neutrino events without violating X-ray constraints, the absorption of high-energy gamma rays is in minor tension with data. We therefore do not find any model that can simultaneously explain the high event number quoted by IceCube and the (sparse) electromagnetic data during the neutrino flare., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

In this work we use a multi-messenger approach to determine if the high energy diffuse neutrino flux observed by the IceCube Observatory can originate from $\gamma$-ray sources powered by Cosmic Rays interactions with gas. Typical representatives of such sources are Starburst and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies. Using the three most recent calculations of the non-blazar contribution to the extragalactic $\gamma$-ray background measured by the Fermi-LAT collaboration, we find that a hard power-law spectrum with spectral index $\alpha \leq 2.12$ is compatible with all the estimations for the allowed contribution from non-blazar sources, within 1$\sigma$. Using such a spectrum we are able to interpret the IceCube results, showing that various classes of hadronically powered $\gamma$-ray galaxies can provide the dominant contribution to the astrophysical signal above 100 TeV and about half of the contribution to the energy flux between 10-100 TeV. With the addition of neutrinos from the Galactic plane, it is possible to saturate the IceCube signal at high energy. In September 2017, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory recorded a very-high-energy neutrino in directional coincidence with a blazar in an unusually bright gamma-ray state, TXS0506+056. Blazars are prominent photon sources in the universe because they harbor a relativistic jet whose radiation is strongly collimated and amplified. High-energy atomic nuclei known as cosmic rays can produce neutrinos; thus the recent detection may help identifying the sources of the diffuse neutrino flux and the energetic cosmic rays. Here we report on a self-consistent analysis of the physical relation between the observed neutrino and the blazar, in particular the time evolution and spectral behavior of neutrino and photon emission. We demonstrate that a moderate enhancement in the number of cosmic rays during the flare can yield a very strong increase of the neutrino flux which is limited by co-produced hard X-rays and TeV gamma rays. We also test typical radiation models for compatibility and identify several model classes as incompatible with the observations. We investigate to what degree the findings can be generalized to the entire population of blazars, to determine the relation between their output in photons, neutrinos, and cosmic rays, and suggest how to optimize the strategy of future observations., Comment: The published version is available from Nature Astronomy, open read access at https://rdcu.be/bA7Yg

Muons and neutrinos from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere originate from decays of mesons in air-showers. Sibyll-2.3c aims to give a precise description of hadronic interactions in the relevant phase space for conventional and prompt leptons in light of new accelerator data, including that from the LHC. Sibyll is designed primarily as an event generator for use in simulation of extensive air showers. Because it has been tuned for forward physics as well as the central region, it can also be used to calculate inclusive fluxes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of Sibyll-2.3c for calculation of fluxes of atmospheric leptons.

We present a new parametrization of the cosmic-ray flux and its mass composition over an energy range from 10 GeV to $10^{11}$ GeV. Our approach is data-driven and relies on theoretical assumptions as little as possible. We combine measurements of the flux of individual elements from high-precision satellites and balloon experiments with indirect measurements of mass groups from the leading air shower experiments. To our knowledge, we provide the first fit of this kind that consistently takes both statistical and systematic uncertainties into account. The uncertainty on the energy scales of individual experiments is handled explicitly in our mathematical approach. Part of our results is a common energy scale and adjustment factors for the energy scales of the participating experiments. Our fit has a reduced $\chi^2$-value of 0.5, showing that experimental data are in good agreement, if systematic uncertainties are considered. Our model may serve as a world-average of the measured fluxes for individual elements from proton to iron from 10 GeV to $10^{11}$ GeV. It is useful as an input for simulations or theoretical computations based on cosmic rays. The experimental uncertainties of the input data are captured in a covariance matrix, which can be propagated into derived quantities.

We discuss the production of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) nuclei and neutrinos from blazars. We compute the nuclear cascade in the jet for both BL Lac objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), and in the ambient radiation zones for FSRQs as well. By modeling representative spectral energy distributions along the blazar sequence, two distinct regimes are identified, which we call "nuclear survival" -- typically found in low-luminosity BL Lacs, and "nuclear cascade" -- typically found in high-luminosity FSRQs. We quantify how the neutrino and cosmic-ray (CR) emission efficiencies evolve over the blazar sequence, and demonstrate that neutrinos and CRs come from very different object classes. For example, high-frequency peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) tend to produce CRs, and HL-FSRQs are the more efficient neutrino emitters. This conclusion does not depend on the CR escape mechanism, for which we discuss two alternatives (diffusive and advective escape). Finally, the neutrino spectrum from blazars is shown to significantly depend on the injection composition into the jet, especially in the nuclear cascade case: Injection compositions heavier than protons lead to reduced neutrino production at the peak, which moves at the same time to lower energies. The Monte Carlo model Sibyll has been designed for efficient simulation of hadronic multiparticle production up to the highest energies as needed for interpreting cosmic ray measurements. For more than 15 years, version 2.1 of Sibyll has been one of the standard models for air shower simulation. Motivated by data of LHC and fixed-target experiments and a better understanding of the phenomenology of hadronic interactions, we have developed an improved version of this model, version 2.3, which has been released in 2016. In this contribution we present a revised version of this model, called Sibyll 2.3c, that is further improved by adjusting particle production spectra to match the expectation of Feynman scaling in the fragmentation region. After a brief introduction to the changes implemented in Sibyll 2.3 and 2.3c with respect to Sibyll 2.1, the current predictions of the model for the depth of shower maximum, the number of muons at ground, and the energy spectrum of muons in extensive air showers are presented., Comment: 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference

We discuss neutrino and cosmic-ray emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with the injection of nuclei, where we take into account that a nuclear cascade from photo-disintegration can fully develop in the source. One of our main objectives is to test if recent results from the IceCube and the Pierre Auger Observatory can be accommodated with the paradigm that GRBs are the sources of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). While our key results are obtained using an internal shock model, we discuss how the secondary emission from a GRB shell can be interpreted in terms of other astrophysical models. It is demonstrated that the expected neutrino flux from GRBs weakly depends on the injection composition, which implies that prompt neutrinos from GRBs can efficiently test the GRB-UHECR paradigm even if the UHECRs are nuclei. We show that the UHECR spectrum and composition, as measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory, can be self-consistently reproduced in a combined source-propagation model. In an attempt to describe the energy range including the ankle, we find tension with the IceCube bounds from the GRB stacking analyses. In an alternative scenario, where only the UHECRs beyond the ankle originate from GRBs, the requirement for a joint description of cosmic-ray and neutrino observations favors lower luminosities, which does not correspond to the typical expectation from {\gamma}-ray observations., Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures

We study the Glashow resonance $\bar{\nu}_e + e^- \rightarrow W^- \rightarrow$ hadrons at 6.3 PeV as diagnostic of the production processes of ultra-high energy neutrinos. The focus lies on describing the physics of neutrino production from pion decay as accurate as possible by including the kinematics of weak decays and Monte Carlo simulations of pp and p$\gamma$ interactions. We discuss optically thick (to photohadronic interactions) sources, sources of cosmic ray nuclei and muon damped sources. Even in the proposed upgrade IceCube-Gen2, a discrimination of scenarios such as pp versus p$\gamma$ is extremely challenging under realistic assumptions. Nonetheless, the Glashow resonance can serve as a smoking gun signature of neutrino production from photohadronic (A$\gamma$) interactions of heavier nuclei, as the expected Glashow event rate exceeds that of pp interactions. We finally quantify the exposures for which the non-observation of Glashow events exerts pressure on certain scenarios.

The determination of the injection composition of cosmic ray nuclei within astrophysical sources requires sufficiently accurate descriptions of the source physics and the propagation - apart from controlling astrophysical uncertainties. We therefore study the implications of nuclear data and models for cosmic ray astrophysics, which involves the photo-disintegration of nuclei up to iron in astrophysical environments. We demonstrate that the impact of nuclear model uncertainties is potentially larger in environments with non-thermal radiation fields than in the cosmic microwave background. We also study the impact of nuclear models on the nuclear cascade in a gamma-ray burst radiation field, simulated at a level of complexity comparable to the most precise cosmic ray propagation code. We conclude with an isotope chart describing which information is in principle necessary to describe nuclear interactions in cosmic ray sources and propagation., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. The event generator Sibyll can be used for the simulation of hadronic multiparticle production up to the highest cosmic ray energies. It is optimized for providing an economic description of those aspects of the expected hadronic final states that are needed for the calculation of air showers and atmospheric lepton fluxes. New measurements from fixed target and collider experiments, in particular those at LHC, allow us to test the predictive power of the model version 2.1, which was released more than 10 years ago, and also to identify shortcomings. Based on a detailed comparison of the model predictions with the new data we revisit model assumptions and approximations to obtain an improved version of the interaction model. In addition a phenomenological model for the production of charm particles is implemented as needed for the calculation of prompt lepton fluxes in the energy range of the astrophysical neutrinos recently discovered by IceCube. After giving an overview of the new ideas implemented in Sibyll and discussing how they lead to an improved description of accelerator data, predictions for air showers and atmospheric lepton fluxes are presented., Comment: Contribution to ICRC 2015
