Abstract

A 37-year-old patient with liver metastases from gastric cancer was treated with a double adoptive immunotherapy regimen comprising tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes plus interleukin-2 and subsequently local-regional lymphokine-activated killer cells plus interleukin-2 because of an extremely high in vitro cytotoxic specific activity on established gastric cancer cell lines. The necrosis verified in the center of the hepatic metastasis would appear to demonstrate treatment efficacy, but no clinical response was seen. In vitro cytotoxicity data alone are insufficient to predict the clinical efficacy of adoptive immunotherapy.

12. Transesophageal Echocardiography in the Evaluation of Mediastinal Masses

Abstract

To assess the diagnostic impact of transesophageal echocardiography in the evaluation of mediastinal masses, 30 patients with mediastinal abnormalities detected by routine chest roentgenogram underwent transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. Subsequently, 29 of the patients underwent computed tomography and 16 underwent magnetic resonance imaging. The location and structure of the masses as well as their relationship to the surrounding structures were assessed. Anatomic confirmation and histopathologic diagnosis of the mediastinal masses by surgical resection and biopsy was available for all patients. Transesophageal echocardiography was more accurate than transthoracic echocardiography in detecting mediastinal masses (90% versus 73%), in identifying their structure (100% versus 90%), and in evaluating their relationship to contiguous organs (89% versus 81%). No complication was observed during the examinations. Computed tomography correctly diagnosed the location, structure, and relationships in all patients but one; magnetic resonance imaging correctly evaluated the mediastinal masses in all 16 patients. Our study suggests that transesophageal echocardiography is a valuable and safe complementary method of evaluating mediastinal masses. Moreover, this technique allows the obstruction of vessels and heart cavities, valve regurgitation, and right and left ventricular function to be easily assessed.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors present the results of Flicker stimulation therapy in functional visual deficits secondary to occipital cortex lesions of miscellaneous origins. They formulate the hypothesis that the functional response obtained is subordinate to a variation or an integration of the macular cortical representation seat. Four cases were examined and the results obtained are significant.

Abstract

A variety of cells are involved in the pathogenesis of amblyopia : ON, OFF, ON-OFF cells, postsynaptic cells, neurons of striate cortex and the select interest of the macula. The need for stimulation of these cells in treating amblyopia forms the theoretical basis of the Flicker stimulator with red monochromatic light (LED, 655 nm). The authors present a clinical investigation on 35 subjects with anisometropic or strabismic amblyopia, before extensive treatment with classic anti-amblyopic techniques without satisfactory improvement obtaining significant statistical results (p less than 0,001).
