We present a general theory of thermalization of light in multimode optical fibers, including optical beams with nonzero orbital angular momentum or vortex beams. A generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition is obtained, based on the conservation of the angular momentum. We confirm our predictions by numerical simulations and experiments based on holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. This establishes new constraints for the achievement of spatial beam self-cleaning, giving previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.

We show that Kerr beam self-cleaning results from parametric mode mixing instabilities, that generate a number of nonlinearly interacting modes with randomized phases -- optical wave turbulence, followed by a direct and inverse cascade towards high mode numbers and condensation into the fundamental mode, respectively. This optical self-organization effect is analogue to wave condensation that is well-known in hydrodynamic 2D turbulence.

Simulations of the elastic strain fields for double Ge/Si quantum dots located on the same wetting layer are carried out. The cluster approximation is used for the atomistic model based on the Keating potential. The spatial distributions of the strain energy density and electron potential energy are calculated using clusters containing atoms of 150 coordination spheres. An atomistic model based on the Keating potential and the conjugate gradient method are used for simulation of the strain fields for single Ge/Si quantum dots. Calculations are performed in the cluster approximation using clusters containing about three million atoms belonging to 150 coordination spheres. The spatial distributions of the strain energy density and electron potential energy are calculated for different valleys forming the bottom of the silicon conduction band. Ge/Si structures with vertically stacked quantum dots are simulated to implement the basic elements of a quantum computer for operation with electron spin states. We discuss methods for coherently controlling mesoscopic atomic ensembles where the number of atoms varies randomly from one experimental run to the next. We present schemes for geometric phase compensation in adiabatic passage which can be used for the implementation of quantum logic gates with atomic ensembles consisting of an arbitrary number of strongly interacting atoms. Protocols using double sequences of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) or adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses are analyzed. Switching the sign of the detuning between two STIRAP sequences, or inverting the phase between two ARP pulses, provides state transfer with well defined amplitude and phase independent of atom number in the Rydberg blockade regime.
