Direct and indirect criminological risks of the use of robotics are analyzed and issues of responsibility of the manufacturer (developer)and/or owner (user) of robotics are discussed for acts committed with their participation. This essay discusses promising areas of legal research related to robotics and its corresponding legal regulations. The definition of robotics is based and proposed as all categories of robots in their broadest sense, regardless of their purpose, degree of danger, mobility, or autonomy, as well as cyber-physical systems with artificial intelligence in any form. It is proposed to recognize socially dangerous acts committed with the use of robotics as crimes committed in a generally dangerous way if there are grounds for doing so. It is concluded that the commission of acts through robotics is capable, in certain cases, of creating a plurality of crimes in the form of a real aggregate. The expanding powers of State security bodies, which can carry out the functions of state policy development, legal regulation, control, and supervision in the field of robotics application, have been verified.

Summary Background No treatment has consistently shown efficacy in slowing disability progression in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). We assessed the effect of siponimod, a selective sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor 1,5 modulator, on disability progression in patients with SPMS. Methods This event-driven and exposure-driven, double-blind, phase 3 trial was done at 292 hospital clinics and specialised multiple sclerosis centres in 31 countries. Using interactive response technology to assign numbers linked to treatment arms, patients (age 18–60 years) with SPMS and an Expanded Disability Status Scale score of 3·0–6·5 were randomly assigned (2:1) to once daily oral siponimod 2 mg or placebo for up to 3 years or until the occurrence of a prespecified number of confirmed disability progression (CDP) events. The primary endpoint was time to 3-month CDP. Efficacy was assessed for the full analysis set (ie, all randomly assigned and treated patients); safety was assessed for the safety set. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01665144. Findings 1651 patients were randomly assigned between Feb 5, 2013, and June 2, 2015 (1105 to the siponimod group, and 546 to the placebo group). One patient did not sign the consent form, and five patients did not receive study drug, all of whom were in the siponimod group. 1645 patients were included in the analyses (1099 in the siponimod group and 546 in the placebo). At baseline, the mean time since first multiple sclerosis symptoms was 16·8 years (SD 8·3), and the mean time since conversion to SPMS was 3·8 years (SD 3·5); 1055 (64%) patients had not relapsed in the previous 2 years, and 918 (56%) of 1651 needed walking assistance. 903 (82%) patients receiving siponimod and 424 (78%) patients receiving placebo completed the study. 288 (26%) of 1096 patients receiving siponimod and 173 (32%) of 545 patients receiving placebo had 3-month CDP (hazard ratio 0·79, 95% CI 0·65–0·95; relative risk reduction 21%; p=0·013). Adverse events occurred in 975 (89%) of 1099 patients receiving siponimod versus 445 (82%) of 546 patients receiving placebo; serious adverse events were reported for 197 (18%) patients in the siponimod group versus 83 (15%) patients in the placebo group. Lymphopenia, increased liver transaminase concentration, bradycardia and bradyarrhythmia at treatment initiation, macular oedema, hypertension, varicella zoster reactivation, and convulsions occurred more frequently with siponimod than with placebo. Initial dose titration mitigated cardiac first-dose effects. Frequencies of infections, malignancies, and fatalities did not differ between groups. Interpretation Siponimod reduced the risk of disability progression with a safety profile similar to that of other S1P modulators and is likely to be a useful treatment for SPMS. This article describes the numeral phrase in Soikkola Ingrian. It focuses on the external syntax of the numeral phrase (first of all, case marking of its components) and on the number agreement between the numeral phrase in the subject position and the predicate. The sources of data are (a) a collection of spontaneous speech samples recorded in 2006–2013, (b) samples of spontaneous speech published by previous researchers, (c) elicited material recorded in 2006–2023. Though the numeral phrase in Soikkola Ingrian preserves most of the common Finnic traits, it has some less com- mon features, e.g. agreement in all numeral phrases with a numeral ending in ‘one’ or expressing approximate quantity through a reversed word order. Most likely these features arose due to the contact influence of Russian. Kokkuvõte. Fedor Rozhanskiy: Numeraalfraasi süntaks isuri keele Soikkola murdes. See artikkel kirjeldab numeraalfraasi isuri keele Soikkola murdes. Andmeallikad on (a) 2006.–2013. aastal salvestatud spontaanse kõneüksuste kogu, (b) varasemate uurijate avaldatud spontaanse kõne näited, (c) 2006.–2023. aastal salvestatud küsitletud materjal. Kuigi numeraalfraas Soikkola murdes säilitab enamiku tavalistest läänemeresoome keele tunnustest, on sellel mõningaid vähemlevinud omadusi, näiteks ühildumine kõigis numeraalfraasides numbriga ’üks’ lõppeva numeraali või ligikaudse koguse väljendamise kaudu pööratud sõnajärjega. Need omadused on tekkinud tõenäoliselt vene keele kontakti tulemusena.

This introductory paper presents the context and current challenges of Uralic syntactic studies. The brief summary of seven selected papers from the SOUL-4 conference published in the present issue is followed by an overview of six topics from the domain of Uralic syntax, namely: differential object marking; object agreement; impersonal constructions; the syntax of minor parts of speech; subordination and nonfinite predication; and possessive constructions. The aim of this overview is to show how intricate and, in some ways, how unfamiliar Uralic syntax looks from the Standard Average European perspective and how many issues still await further study. Kokkuvõte. Maria Ovsjannikova, Fedor Rozhanskiy: Uraali keelte süntaks: põhiomadused ja väljakutsed. Sissejuhatus.

The article examines the phenomenon of the identity of the perpetrator of a crime in the mechanism of individualization of criminal punishment. It is pointed out that although the criminal act acts as the main dimension of the indentity of the perpetrator of a crime, it is of fundamental importance in the punishment individualization mechanism to take into account the individual diversity inherent in any perpetrator’s personality that may be reflected in the crime or not characterize it.

This article analyses the vowel in the illative marker of monosyllabic nouns which usually copies the quality of the stem vowels. The data come from different questionnaires recorded by Soikkola Ingrian speakers in the 21st century. The main point of interest is the contradiction between the fact that the vowel in the illative marker copies the stem vowel and the fact that existing descriptions often indicate raising of mid vowels in the stem but not in the illative suffix. Both auditory analysis and acoustic measurements are used to check the correspondence between the quality of the stem and suffix vowels in the illative forms of monosyllabic nouns. The research reveals that there is both interspeaker and intraspeaker variation in the quality of the vowels under discussion, and several different strategies can be used for building the illative marker. The rounded stem vowels öö and oo are opposed to the unrounded ee: if raised in the stem, the latter does not influence the quality of the suffix vowel. In most cases, the quality of the rounded stem and suffix vowels is the same, so a transcription where these vowels are denoted differently is not justified. Pronunciations where both the stem and suffix vowels are half-raised argue for an alternative variant of the Soikkola Ingrian phonological system.

The aim of this study was to obtain new halolactones with a gem-dimethyl group in the cyclohexane ring (at the C-3 or C-5 carbon) and a methyl group in the lactone ring and then subject them to biotransformations using filamentous fungi. Halolactones in the form of mixtures of two diasteroisomers were subjected to screening biotransformations, which showed that only compounds with a gem-dimethyl group located at the C-5 carbon were transformed. Strains from the genus Fusarium carried out hydrolytic dehalogenation, while strains from the genus Absidia carried out hydroxylation of the C-7 carbon. Both substrates and biotransformation products were then tested for antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant strains of both bacteria and yeast-like fungi. The highest antifungal activity against C. dubliniensis and C. albicans strains was obtained for compound 5b, while antimicrobial activity against S. aureus MRSA was obtained for compound 4a.

This article discusses demonstrative pronouns in the Soikkola dialect of the Ingrian language. The material for the research comes from the collection of spontaneous speech samples recorded in the 21st century. All the examples are published for the first time. The article presents mainly a qualitative analysis and aims at overviewing the basic functions of the Ingrian demonstrative pronouns tämä and še. It is shown that in the contemporary Ingrian the demonstratives are used as deictic and anaphoric devices, and also as discourse markers. Individual speakers demonstrate differences in the use of these pronouns due to the contact influence from the neighbouring languages. Kokkuvõte. Elena Markus, Fedor Rozhanskiy: Demonstratiivpronoomenite funktsioonid tänapäeva isuri keele Soikkola murdes.

Abstract Large-scale detectors consisting of a liquid scintillator target surrounded by an array of photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in the modern neutrino experiments: Borexino, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the upcoming JUNO with its satellite detector TAO. Such apparatuses are able to measure neutrino energy which can be derived from the amount of light and its spatial and temporal distribution over PMT channels. However, achieving a fine energy resolution in large-scale detectors is challenging. In this work, we present machine learning methods for energy reconstruction in the JUNO detector, the most advanced of its type. We focus on positron events in the energy range of 0–10 MeV which corresponds to the main signal in JUNO – neutrinos originated from nuclear reactor cores and detected via the inverse beta decay channel. We consider the following models: Boosted Decision Trees and Fully Connected Deep Neural Network, trained on aggregated features, calculated using the information collected by PMTs. We describe the details of our feature engineering procedure and show that machine learning models can provide the energy resolution $$\sigma = 3\%$$ σ = 3 % at 1 MeV using subsets of engineered features. The dataset for model training and testing is generated by the Monte Carlo method with the official JUNO software.

The full optimization of the design and operation of instruments whose functioning relies on the interaction of radiation with matter is a super-human task, due to the large dimensionality of the space of possible choices for geometry, detection technology, materials, data-acquisition, and information-extraction techniques, and the interdependence of the related parameters. On the other hand, massive potential gains in performance over standard, “experience-driven” layouts are in principle within our reach if an objective function fully aligned with the final goals of the instrument is maximized through a systematic search of the configuration space. The stochastic nature of the involved quantum processes make the modeling of these systems an intractable problem from a classical statistics point of view, yet the construction of a fully differentiable pipeline and the use of deep learning techniques may allow the simultaneous optimization of all design parameters. In this white paper, we lay down our plans for the design of a modular and versatile modeling tool for the end-to-end optimization of complex instruments for particle physics experiments as well as industrial and medical applications that share the detection of radiation as their basic ingredient. We consider a selected set of use cases to highlight the specific needs of different applications.

Assaying changes in the amount of DNA in single cells is a well-established method for studying the effects of various perturbations on the cell cycle. A drawback of this method is the need for a fixation procedure that does not allow for in vivo study nor simultaneous monitoring of additional parameters such as fluorescence of tagged proteins or genetically encoded indicators. In this work, we report on a method of Histone Abundance Quantification (HAQ) of live yeast harboring a GFP-tagged histone, Htb2. We show that it provides data highly congruent with DNA levels, both in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Ogataea polymorpha yeasts. The protocol for the DNA content assay was also optimized to be suitable for both Ogataea and Saccharomyces yeasts. Using the HAQ approach, we demonstrate the expected effects on the cell cycle progression for several compounds and conditions and show usability in conjunction with additional fluorophores. Thus, our data provide a simple approach that can be utilized in a wide range of studies where the effects of various stimuli on the cell cycle need to be monitored directly in living cells.

This research analyses the pronominal system of Soikkola Ingrian. The main goal of the article is descriptive, because existing publications on Soikkola Ingrian give only a superficial analysis of pronouns and there are no detailed descriptions based on data from the 21st century. The article focuses on both interspeaker and intraspeaker variation in four groups of Ingrian pronouns: personal, demonstrative, reflexive and reciprocal. The field data collected by the authors in the 21st century are compared with the data presented in grammars written in the 19th and 20th centuries. The research concludes that although the pronominal system has not changed significantly, there are a number of innovations in Ingrian pronominal forms and their variation. The most frequent type of variation is the variation between individual speakers, but not between sub-dialectal groups. Free variation is also common, while other types of variation are less relevant. Kokkuvõte. Anna Schwarz, Fedor Rozhanskiy: Isuri keele Soikkola murde pronoomenite süsteem: isikulised, demonstratiivsed, refleksiivsed ja retsiprooksed pronoomenid ning nende varieerumine. Uurimus analüüsib isuri keele Soikkola murde pronoomenite süsteemi. Artikkel on olemuselt kirjeldav.

Interactions of key amyloidogenic proteins with SARS-CoV-2 proteins may be one of the causes of expanding and delayed post-COVID-19 neurodegenerative processes. Furthermore, such abnormal effects can be caused by proteins and their fragments circulating in the body during vaccination. The aim of our work was to analyze the effect of the receptor-binding domain of the coronavirus S-protein domain (RBD) on alpha-synuclein amyloid aggregation. Molecular modeling showed that the predicted RBD complex with monomeric alpha-synuclein is stable over 100 ns of molecular dynamics. Analysis of the interactions of RBD with the amyloid form of alpha-synuclein showed that during molecular dynamics for 200 ns the number of contacts is markedly higher than that for the monomeric form. The formation of the RBD complex with the alpha-synuclein monomer was confirmed immunochemically by immobilization of RBD on its specific receptor ACE2. Changes in the spectral characteristics of the intrinsic tryptophans of RBD and hydrophobic dye ANS indicate an interaction between the monomeric proteins, but according to the data of circular dichroism spectra, this interaction does not lead to a change in their secondary structure. Data on the kinetics of amyloid fibril formation using several spectral approaches strongly suggest that RBD prevents the amyloid transformation of alpha-synuclein. Moreover, the fibrils obtained in the presence of RBD showed significantly less cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.

This paper analyzes the morphophonological structure of the inessive singular forms in Liivtšülä-Luuditsa Votic. There are no fluent speakers of this variety; the research is based on the materials recorded in 2003–2016. The inessive singular forms demonstrate variation of the weak and strong grade stems, which is very untypical for a case form. In all other morphological cases, the distribution of weak and strong stems is very stable. The variation in the inessive stem is observed both in the examples from published sources on the Votic language, and in our field materials. The acoustic research has confirmed the variation. Additionally, in the strong grade stem we find a shorter geminate stop or affricate compared to other strong grade forms (in the paper, the inessive singular is compared to the inessive plural and partitive singular). We consider several hypotheses that could explain the variation and the shorter geminate. The conducted experiments do not confirm the role of the word structure as the primary factor defining the geminate length. We suggest that both the variation of stems and the shorter geminate might result from language contact. In the neighbouring Ingrian varieties, the inessive is built from the weak grade stem. Since all the last fluent speakers of Votic knew Ingrian to some extent, the Votic and Ingrian patterns might have mixed. It is probable that originally the variation was triggered by some other factors, and the increasing role of the language contact turned it into a dominant factor in the course of the 20th century.

In our introduction to the volume, we address the history and current developments in Uralic studies, with particular attention to the evolution of grammar-writing since the very first Uralic grammars until today, and summarize some of the most interesting Uralic phenomena from a typological point of view. In Section 2 we show that, even though Uralic studies can boast a remarkable number of linguistic studies and a rich production of descriptive grammars, the published grammars often lack in comparability (as they use different terms to describe the same phenomena), international reach and they often are not typologically informed. Therefore, we advocate for a stronger cooperation between typology and Uralic studies. In Section 3 we present the papers included in this special edition of ESUKA, a selection of typologically-informed, data-driven and terminologically consistent studies of different phenomena in a number of Uralic languages. Finally, in Section 4 we present a short overview of some typologically relevant features in Uralic languages. Uurali keelte tüpoloogia: nüüdisaegsed vaated ja uued vaatenurgad. Sissejuhatus.

45. A Study of the Effects of Prestrain on the Tensile Properties of Filamentary Composites

- Abstract
A study of the effect of mechanical prestraining on the tensile behavior of metal matrix composites was conducted. Using both a two-member cylindrical composite simulation model and actual filamentary composites, the stress and strain distribution was followed during cool-down from the compositing temperature, through the prestrain cycle, and during subsequent reloading. The prediction of the behavior of the model composites during unloading from the prestrained state was found to be complicated by compressive plastic flow of the matrix during the unloading. By using experimentally measured effective stress-effective strain curves, the Bauschinger effect exhibited by model composites was well described. The model composites used to validate the analysis consisted of maraging steel—OFHC copper concentric cylinders. Prestraining of copper-tungsten filamentary composites was investigated both experimentally and analytically to verify the applicability of the model to real fiber composites. It was established that prestrain into the elastic-plastic behavioral region was successful in increasing the load-carrying capacity of composites with a 20 percent volume fraction of tungsten. The analytical technique used to describe the behavior of the cylindrical composites was used to rationalize the behavior of the filamentary composites. It was shown that the ameliorating effect of prestraining was due to the alteration of the net residual stress state of the matrix from an “as fabricated” tensile state to one of compression after prestraining.

In our recent publications we presented a design that allows formation of highly localized and optically controlled electrophoretic traps. 1,2 We demonstrated that electrophoretic traps can be utilized for biomolecule photoconcentration, optically directed transport, and separation by size. 1,2 In the current publication we suggest a hybrid design for biomolecule separation which implements electrophoretic traps in tandem with well-established electrophoretic techniques. We perform Monte Carlo simulations that demonstrate that the resolution of well-established electrophoretic techniques can be greatly enhanced by introducing photoelectrophoretic traps.

- Abstract
The applicability of the binary composite model has been completely generalized for any combination and arrangement of materials. This refinement has eliminated the previous restriction where only composite cylinders in which the core member would yield before the case member could be treated analytically. It was found that the residual stresses in the composite induced during cooling from fabrication temperatures needed to be analyzed and incorporated into subsequent axial loading predictions. The residual stresses, which result from dissimilar thermal expansions of the components of composites, were predicted analytically and compared to the experimentally determined values for OFHC copper core with a 4340 steel case and OFHC copper core with a maraging steel case. Prestrains into the elastic-plastic behavioral region were emphasized. A double concentric model was developed to assess the seriousness of the presence of an unconstrained outer surface of the models. (Author)

This paper provides a comparison of two varieties of the Votic language. Based on field materials collected between 2001 and 2012 from the last speakers of Votic, we compiled a list of the most important phonetic and grammatical features that distinguish between Jõgõperä and Luuditsa varieties. The ten features are: the degree of apocope, the initial h, merging of allative and adessive cases, secondary geminates, illative singular forms, genitive and partitive plural markers, imperfect forms, the active participle marker, conditional markers, and negative pronominal forms. The analysis has shown that many differences can be explained by the influence of the neighbouring Ingrian language. There are more contact induced changes in the Luuditsa variety, which is probably the result of more intensive contacts with the Ingrian population in this village. The contemporary Luuditsa variety is a vivid example demonstrating that language change in the Lower Luga area was driven by convergent developments in no lesser degree than by divergent processes.

Pancreatitis following kidney transplantation was first described by Starzl in 1964 [19]. The incidence rate of the disease involving severe complications ranges from 1.2 to 6.8%. The number of risk factors, besides those of the normal population, is increased by a number of other factors, i.e. uremia, disorder of lipid metabolism, polycystic kidney, immunosuppressive drugs, cytomegalovirus infection, etc. The mortality of acute pancreatitis in a kidney transplant patient is, in spite of treatment with the most up-to-date methods, is much higher (53-60%) than that for a non-transplant patient. In the period between 27 June 1991 and 31 December 2000 the number of cadaver kidney transplants performed in the Transplantation Division of the 1st Department of Surgery of the Medical and Health-Science Centre of the University of Debrecen was 349. During this period 9 incidences of acute pancreatitis were found in 8 patients. The frequency of incidence was 2.56%. In the present communication we analyse the prognosis of 9 kidney transplant patients, with special respect to immunosuppression. One patient was administered Cyclosporin alone, four were given Cyclosporin and Steroids, a further one Cyclosporin, Steroids and Azathioprine, the remaining three were treated with Cyclosporin, steroids and Mycophenolate Mophetil. In six cases out of nine multiorgan insufficiency (kidney, lung, liver) was encountered on presentation, three cases were accompanied by peritonitis. In spite of early jejunal nutrition, intensive therapy, antibiotic treatment, CT monitoring, if needed, necrectomy and oncotomy, three of our patients died from multiorgan insufficiency induced by septico-toxic state (mortality 33.3%). Other six patients recovered. The mortality rate of acute pancreatitis is much higher in immunosuppressed patients. The role of the etiological factors is not unequivocal in the development of pancreatitis. Nevertheless, all possible risk factors have to be taken into consideration when starting the immunosuppressive treatment of transplant patients and during their follow-up. By optimally adjusting the immunosuppressants we can decrease the risk of pancreatitis, however, the prognosis of the diseases, in agreement with the data in the literature, cannot be considerably improved even with the most up-to-date methods.
