1. Contrasting Dynamics in Isoelectronic Anions Formed by Electron Attachment

Abstract

Cyanogen NCCN and cyanoacetylene HCCCN are isoelectronic molecules, and as such, they have many similar properties. We focus on the bond cleavage in these induced by the dissociative electron attachment. In both molecules, resonant electron attachment produces CN- with very similar energy dependence. We investigate the very different dissociation dynamics, in each of the two molecules, revealed by velocity map imaging of this common fragment. Different dynamics are manifested both in the excess energy partitioning and in the angular distributions of fragments. Based on the comparison with electron energy loss spectra, which provide information about possible parent states of the resonances (both optically allowed and forbidden excited states of the neutral target), we ascribe the observed effect to the distortion of the nuclear frame during the formation of core-excited resonance in cyanoacetylene. The proposed mechanism also explains a puzzling difference in the magnitude of the CN- cross section in the two molecules which has been so far unexplained.

2. Coupling of distant parts of pyrrole molecule through virtual and resonant states

Abstract

We experimentally show that the N-H bond cleavage in pyrrole molecule following resonant electron attachment is allowed and controlled by the motion of the atoms which are not dissociating, namely of the carbon-attached hydrogen atoms. In order to interpret these findings, we have developed a method for locating all resonant and virtual states of an electron-molecule system in the complex plane, based on all-electron R-matrix scattering calculations. Mapping these as a function of molecular geometry allows us to separate two contributing dissociation mechanisms: a $\pi^*$ resonance formation inducing strong bending deformations and a non-resonant $\sigma^*$ mechanism originating in a virtual state. The coupling between the two mechanisms is enabled by the out-of-plane motion of the C-H bonds and we show it must happen on an ultrafast few-fs timescale.

Abstract

We experimentally probe electron collisions with HC$_3$N in the energy range from 0 to 10 eV with the focus on vibrational excitation and dissociative electron attachment. The vibrational excitation cross sections show a number of resonances which are mode specific: the two dominant $\pi^*$ resonances are visible in the excitation of all the vibrational modes, however, broad $\sigma^*$ resonances are visible only in certain bond-stretching vibrational modes. The lower $\pi^*$ resonance shows a pronounced boomerang structure. Since it overlaps with the threshold peak originating from a long-range electron-molecule interaction, the interference pattern is rather unusual. Somewhat surprisingly, the boomerang structure is visible also in the elastic scattering cross section. The dissociative electron attachment cross sections agree qualitatively with the data of Gilmore and Field [J. Phys. B 48 (2015) 035201], however, approximately a factor of two difference is found in the absolute values.

Abstract

We have investigated the magnetization properties and flux dynamics of superconducting Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ single crystals within wide range of copper concentrations. We find that the superconducting anisotropy is low and independent on copper concentration ($\gamma\sim1.7$), except in the case of strongly underdoped samples ($x\leq0.06$) that show a gradual increase in anisotropy to $\gamma\sim1.9$. The vortex phase diagram in this material is characterized by broad region of vortex liquid phase that is unusual for such low-$T_c$ superconductor with low anisotropy. Below the irreversibility line the vortex solid state supports relatively low critical current densities as compared to the depairing current limit ($J_c/J_0\sim10^{-7}$). All this points out that local fluctuations in copper concentration have little effect on bulk pinning properties in this system.

Abstract

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Ginzburg-Landau simulations we explore vortex configurations in magnetically coupled NbSe$_2$-Permalloy superconductor-ferromagnet bilayer. The Permalloy film with stripe domain structure induces periodic local magnetic induction in the superconductor creating a series of pinning-antipinning channels for externally added magnetic flux quanta. Such laterally confined Abrikosov vortices form quasi-1D arrays (chains). The transitions between multichain states occur through propagation of kinks at the intermediate fields. At high fields we show that the system becomes non-linear due to a change in both the number of vortices and the confining potential. The longitudinal instabilities of the resulting vortex structures lead to vortices `levitating' in the anti-pinning channels., Comment: accepted in PRB-Rapids

Abstract

The present work combines experiment and theory to reveal the behavior of bromo-substituted-biphenyls after an electron attachment. We experimentally determine anion lifetimes using an electron attachment–magnetic sector mass spectrometer instrument. Branching ratios of dissociative electron attachment fragments on longer timescales are determined using the electron attachment–quadrupole mass spectrometer instrument. In all cases, fragmentation is low: Only the Br− and [M–Br]− ions are detected, and [M–H]− is observed only in the case of 4-Br-biphenyl and parent anion lifetimes as long as 165 µs are observed. Such lifetimes are contradictory to the dissociation rates of 2- and 4-bromobiphenyl, as measured by the pulse radiolysis method to be 3.2 × 1010 and >5 × 1010 s−1, respectively. The discrepancy is plausibly explained by our calculation of the potential energy surface of the dissociating anion. Isolated in vacuum, the bromide anion can orbit the polarized aromatic radical at a long distance. A series of local minima on the potential energy surface allows for a roaming mechanism prolonging the detection time of such weakly bound complex anions. Abstract

The electron-induced reactivity of 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-tetrazole and 5-chloro-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole was studied using a trochoidal electron monochromator quadrupole mass spectrometer experimental setup. 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-tetrazole underwent dissociative electron attachment to form Cl−, [M–HCl]−, and [M–H]−. 5-chloro-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole underwent associative electron attachment to form the parent anion and dissociative electron attachment to form Cl−, CN2Cl−, [M–N2–Cl]−, and [M–HCl]−. For each anion product, the ion yield was measured as a function of incident electron energy. Density functional theory calculations were performed to support the experimental results with estimates of the energetic thresholds for the different reaction pathways. While the tetrazole group is susceptible to electron-induced ring opening in both molecules, this process was only observed for 5-chloro-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole, indicating that this process is influenced by the structure of the molecule. Abstract

Abstract With their optical addressability of individual spins and long coherence time, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are often called “atom-like solid spin-defects”. As observed with trapped atomic ions, quantum interference mediated by indistinguishable photons was demonstrated between remote NV centers. In high sensitivity DC magnetometry at room temperature, NV ensembles are potentially rivaling with alkali-atom vapor cells. However, local strain induces center-to-center variation of both optical and spin transitions of NV centers. Therefore, advanced engineering of diamond growth toward crystalline perfection is demanded. Here, we report on the synthesis of high-quality HPHT (high-pressure, high-temperature) crystals, demonstrating a small inhomogeneous broadening of the spin transitions, of T 2 * = 1.28 μs, approaching the limit for crystals with natural 13C abundance, that we determine as T 2 * = 1.48 μs. The contribution from strain and local charges to the inhomogeneous broadening is lowered to ~17 kHz full width at half maximum for NV ensemble within a > 10 mm3 volume. Looking at optical transitions in low nitrogen crystals, we examine the variation of zero-phonon-line optical transition frequencies at low temperatures, showing a strain contribution below 2 GHz for a large fraction of single NV centers.

Abstract A recurring challenge in quantum science and technology is the precise control of their underlying dynamics that lead to the desired quantum operations, often described by a set of quantum gates. These gates can be subject to application-specific errors, leading to a dependence of their controls on the chosen circuit, the quality measure and the gate-set itself. A natural solution would be to apply quantum optimal control in an application-oriented fashion. In turn, this requires the definition of a meaningful measure of the contextual gate-set performance. Therefore, we explore and compare the applicability of quantum process tomography, linear inversion gate-set tomography, randomized linear gate-set tomography, and randomized benchmarking as measures for closed-loop quantum optimal control experiments, using a macroscopic ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond as a test-bed. Our work demonstrates the relative trade-offs between those measures and how to significantly enhance the gate-set performance, leading to an improvement across all investigated methods.

Abstract

We probe the transient anion states (resonances) in the dielectric gas C4F7N by the electron energy loss spectroscopy and the dissociative electron attachment spectroscopy. The vibrationally inelastic electron scattering leads to two excitation types. The first is the excitation of specific vibrational modes that are assigned with the help of an infrared spectrum of this molecule and quantum chemistry calculations. In the second type of vibrational excitation, the excess energy is randomized via internal vibrational redistribution in the temporary anion, and the electrons are emitted statistically. The electron attachment proceeds in three different regimes. The first is the formation of the parent C4F7N− anion at energies close to 0 eV. The second is a statistical evaporation of the F-atom, leading to the defluorinated anion C4F6N−. Finally, the third is dissociative electron attachment proceeding via the formation of several resonances and leading to a number of fragments. The present data explain the puzzling recent results of the pulsed-Townsend experiments with this gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contains fulltext : 251394.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Small average differences in the left-right asymmetry of cerebral cortical thickness have been reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing controls, affecting widespread cortical regions. The possible impacts of these regional alterations in terms of structural network effects have not previously been characterized. Inter-regional morphological covariance analysis can capture network connectivity between different cortical areas at the macroscale level. Here, we used cortical thickness data from 1455 individuals with ASD and 1560 controls, across 43 independent datasets of the ENIGMA consortium's ASD Working Group, to assess hemispheric asymmetries of intra-individual structural covariance networks, using graph theory-based topological metrics. Compared with typical features of small-world architecture in controls, the ASD sample showed significantly altered average asymmetry of networks involving the fusiform, rostral middle frontal, and medial orbitofrontal cortex, involving higher randomization of the corresponding right-hemispheric networks in ASD. A network involving the superior frontal cortex showed decreased right-hemisphere randomization. Based on comparisons with meta-analyzed functional neuroimaging data, the altered connectivity asymmetry particularly affected networks that subserve executive functions, language-related and sensorimotor processes. These findings provide a network-level characterization of altered left-right brain asymmetry in ASD, based on a large combined sample. Altered asymmetrical brain development in ASD may be partly propagated among spatially distant regions through structural connectivity.

Contains fulltext : 281502.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: Morphology of the human cerebral cortex differs across psychiatric disorders, with neurobiology and developmental origins mostly undetermined. Deviations in the tangential growth of the cerebral cortex during pre/perinatal periods may be reflected in individual variations in cortical surface area later in life. METHODS: Interregional profiles of group differences in surface area between cases and controls were generated using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging from 27,359 individuals including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and high general psychopathology (through the Child Behavior Checklist). Similarity of interregional profiles of group differences in surface area and prenatal cell-specific gene expression was assessed. RESULTS: Across the 11 cortical regions, group differences in cortical area for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and Child Behavior Checklist were dominant in multimodal association cortices. The same interregional profiles were also associated with interregional profiles of (prenatal) gene expression specific to proliferative cells, namely radial glia and intermediate progenitor cells (greater expression, larger difference), as well as differentiated cells, namely excitatory neurons and endothelial and mural cells (greater expression, smaller difference). Finally, these cell types were implicated in known pre/perinatal risk factors for psychosis. Genes coexpressed with radial glia were enriched with genes implicated in congenital abnormalities, birth weight, hypoxia, and starvation. Genes coexpressed with endothelial and mural genes were enriched with genes associated with maternal hypertension and preterm birth. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Morphology of the human cerebral cortex differs across psychiatric disorders, with neurobiology and developmental origins mostly undetermined. Deviations in the tangential growth of the cerebral cortex during pre/perinatal periods may be reflected in individual variations in cortical surface area later in life. METHODS: Interregional profiles of group differences in surface area between cases and controls were generated using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging from 27,359 individuals including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and high general psychopathology (through the Child Behavior Checklist). Similarity of interregional profiles of group differences in surface area and prenatal cell-specific gene expression was assessed. RESULTS: Across the 11 cortical regions, group differences in cortical area for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and Child Behavior Checklist were dominant in multimodal association cortices. The same interregional profiles were also associated with interregional profiles of (prenatal) gene expression specific to proliferative cells, namely radial glia and intermediate progenitor cells (greater expression, larger difference), as well as differentiated cells, namely excitatory neurons and endothelial and mural cells (greater expression, smaller difference). Finally, these cell types were implicated in known pre/perinatal risk factors for psychosis. Genes coexpressed with radial glia were enriched with genes implicated in congenital abnormalities, birth weight, hypoxia, and starvation. Genes coexpressed with endothelial and mural genes were enriched with genes associated with maternal hypertension and preterm birth. Abstract

Electron attachment to the 4-bromobiphenyl molecule and the decay channels of its molecular anion were investigated by means of Dissociative Electron Attachment (DEA) spectroscopy with two different spectrometers. The first apparatus is equipped with a static magnet mass analyzer (Ufa group) and the second one with a quadrupole mass filter (Prague group). The dominant DEA channel at low electron energy leads to formation of Br− negative fragments. Long-lived (τa = 40 µs at the temperature of 80 °C) molecular negative ions were detected only in the Ufa experiment. We explored the involved potential energy surfaces and found that the molecular anion has two distinct structures with the C–Br distances of 1.92 Å and 2.8 Å. The statistical model based on the Arrhenius approximation fully explains the experimental observations and sheds light on the earlier anion dissociation kinetic studies in solution. Intracellular radicals play important roles in cell signaling and regulation of growth factors, cytokines, transcription, apoptosis, and immunomodulation, among others. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of their biological functions from a spatio-temporal pers­pective, there is a great need for nanoscale sensitive tools that allow real-time detection of these reactive species. Currently, intracellular radical probes are based on chemical reactions that could significantly alter radical levels during detection. Due to the excellent bio­compatibility and favorable photophysical properties of nitrogen-vacancy (NV–) centers in fluorescent nanodiamonds (fNDs), the fNDs can serve as a powerful and chemically inert nanotool for intracellular radical detection. In this study, a positively charged nanogel (NG) coating was prepared to prevent the precipitation of fNDs and promote cellular internalization. After internalization of nanodiamond-nanogels (fND-NGs), different stimulators, namely somatostatin (SST), triphenylphosphonium (TPP), and trans-activator of transcription (TAT) peptide, which are widely used cell- or organelle-targeting ligands in medicine, drug delivery, and diagnostics, were applied to stimulate the cells. In parallel, the intracellular radical changes under stimulation of SST, TPP, and TAT ligands were monitored by fND-NGs in a home-built optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) microscope. Our method allows for detecting intracellular radicals in-situ and monitoring their real-time changes during incubation with the targeting ligands in a single living cell. We believe that our method will provide insights into the generation of radical stress in cells, which could improve our fundamental understanding of the pharmacology and signaling pathways of widely used cell- and organelle-targeting ligands associated with free radicals.

Abstract

We probe the electron attachment in hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO), C3F6O, a gas widely used in plasma technologies. We determine the absolute electron attachment cross section using two completely different experimental approaches: (i) a crossed-beam experiment at single collision conditions (local pressures of 5 × 10−4 mbar) and (ii) a pulsed Townsend experiment at pressures of 20–100 mbar. In the latter method, the cross sections are unfolded from the electron attachment rate coefficients. The cross sections derived independently by the two methods are in very good agreement. We additionally discuss the dissociative electron attachment fragmentation patterns and their role in the radical production in industrial HFPO plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. “Historical Falsification” as a Master Trope in the Official Discourse on History Education in Putin’s Russia

Abstract

This article explores a key claim underpinning Russian official memory politics, namely, the notion that Russia’s past (and especially the role it played in the Second World War) is the object of a campaign of “historical falsification” aimed at, among other things, undermining Russian sovereignty, especially by distorting young people’s historical consciousness. Although “historical falsification” is an important keyword in the Kremlin’s discourse, it has received little scholarly attention. Via an analysis of official rhetoric and methodological literature aimed at history teachers, I investigate the ideological functions performed by the concept of “historical falsification.” I show how it serves to reinforce a conspiratorial vision of Russia as a nation under siege, while simultaneously justifying the drive toward greater state control over history education.

Contains fulltext : 225388.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are common neurodevelopmental disorders that frequently co-occur. The authors sought to directly compare these disorders using structural brain imaging data from ENIGMA consortium data. METHODS: Structural T(1)-weighted whole-brain MRI data from healthy control subjects (N=5,827) and from patients with ADHD (N=2,271), ASD (N=1,777), and OCD (N=2,323) from 151 cohorts worldwide were analyzed using standardized processing protocols. The authors examined subcortical volume, cortical thickness, and cortical surface area differences within a mega-analytical framework, pooling measures extracted from each cohort. Analyses were performed separately for children, adolescents, and adults, using linear mixed-effects models adjusting for age, sex, and site (and intracranial volume for subcortical and surface area measures). RESULTS: No shared differences were found among all three disorders, and shared differences between any two disorders did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. Children with ADHD compared with those with OCD had smaller hippocampal volumes, possibly influenced by IQ. Children and adolescents with ADHD also had smaller intracranial volume than control subjects and those with OCD or ASD. Adults with ASD showed thicker frontal cortices compared with adult control subjects and other clinical groups. No OCD-specific differences were observed across different age groups and surface area differences among all disorders in childhood and adulthood. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest robust but subtle differences across different age groups among ADHD, ASD, and OCD. ADHD-specific intracranial volume and hippocampal differences in children and adolescents, and ASD-specific cortical thickness differences in the frontal cortex in adults, support previous work emphasizing structural brain differences in these disorders.

Abstract

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are common neurodevelopmental disorders that frequently co-occur. The authors sought to directly compare these disorders using structural brain imaging data from ENIGMA consortium data. Methods: Structural T1-weighted whole-brain MRI data from healthy control subjects (N=5,827) and from patients with ADHD (N=2,271), ASD (N=1,777), and OCD (N=2,323) from 151 cohorts worldwide were analyzed using standardized processing protocols. The authors examined subcortical volume, cortical thickness, and cortical surface area differences within a mega-analytical framework, pooling measures extracted from each cohort. Analyses were performed separately for children, adolescents, and adults, using linear mixed-effects models adjusting for age, sex, and site (and intracranial volume for subcortical and surface area measures). Results: No shared differences were found among all three disorders, and shared differences between any two disorders did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. Children with ADHD compared with those with OCD had smaller hippocampal volumes, possibly influenced by IQ. Children and adolescents with ADHD also had smaller intracranial volume than control subjects and those with OCD or ASD. Adults with ASD showed thicker frontal cortices compared with adult control subjects and other clinical groups. No OCD-specific differences were observed across different age groups and surface area differences among all disorders in childhood and adulthood. Conclusions: The study findings suggest robust but subtle differences across different age groups among ADHD, ASD, and OCD. ADHD-specific intracranial volume and hippocampal differences in children and adolescents, and ASD-specific cortical thickness differences in the frontal cortex in adults, support previous work emphasizing structural brain differences in these disorders.

Abstract

Abstract Background Epigenetic mechanisms are informational cellular processes instructing normal and diseased phenotypes. They are associated with DNA but without altering the DNA sequence. Whereas chemical processes like DNA methylation or histone modifications are well-accepted epigenetic mechanisms, we herein propose the existence of an additional quantum physics layer of epigenetics. Results We base our hypothesis on theoretical and experimental studies showing quantum phenomena to be active in double-stranded DNA, even under ambient conditions. These phenomena include coherent charge transfer along overlapping pi-orbitals of DNA bases and chirality-induced spin selectivity. Charge transfer via quantum tunneling mediated by overlapping orbitals results in charge delocalization along several neighboring bases, which can even be extended by classical (non-quantum) electron hopping. Such charge transfer is interrupted by flipping base(s) out of the double-strand e.g., by DNA modifying enzymes. Charge delocalization can directly alter DNA recognition by proteins or indirectly by DNA structural changes e.g., kinking. Regarding sequence dependency, charge localization, shown to favor guanines, could influence or even direct epigenetic changes, e.g., modification of cytosines in CpG dinucleotides. Chirality-induced spin selectivity filters electrons for their spin along DNA and, thus, is not only an indicator for quantum coherence but can potentially affect DNA binding properties. Conclusions Quantum effects in DNA are prone to triggering and manipulation by external means. By the hypothesis put forward here, we would like to foster research on “Quantum Epigenetics” at the interface of medicine, biology, biochemistry, and physics to investigate the potential epigenetic impact of quantum physical principles on (human) life.

Abstract

We experimentally probe electron collisions with HC$_3$N in the energy range from 0 to 10 eV with the focus on vibrational excitation and dissociative electron attachment. The vibrational excitation cross sections show a number of resonances which are mode specific: the two dominant $\pi^*$ resonances are visible in the excitation of all the vibrational modes, however, broad $\sigma^*$ resonances are visible only in certain bond-stretching vibrational modes. The lower $\pi^*$ resonance shows a pronounced boomerang structure. Since it overlaps with the threshold peak originating from a long-range electron-molecule interaction, the interference pattern is rather unusual. Somewhat surprisingly, the boomerang structure is visible also in the elastic scattering cross section. The dissociative electron attachment cross sections agree qualitatively with the data of Gilmore and Field [J. Phys. B 48 (2015) 035201], however, approximately a factor of two difference is found in the absolute values.

Abstract

Rectangular 17-4PH stainless steel sandwiched foam panels were fabricated using a commercial manufacturing technique by brazing two sheets to a foam core. Microstructural observations and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of the panels revealed large variations in the quality of the brazed areas from one panel to the next as well as within the same panel. Shear tests conducted on specimens machined from the panels exhibited failures either in the brazed region or in the foam core for the poorly brazed and well-brazed samples, respectively. Compression tests were conducted on the foam cores to evaluate their elastic and plastic deformation behavior. These data were compared with published data on polymeric and metallic foams, and with theoretical deformation models proposed for open cell foams.

Abstract

This study presents an Independent Modal Space Control (IMSC) algorithm whose modal control forces are generated base on a Positive Position Feedback (PPF) strategy. This is in contrast to conventional modal controllers that rely in their opeation on negative feedback of the modal position and velocity. The proposed algorithm combines the attractive attributes of both the IMSC and the PPF. It maintains the simplicity of the IMSC as it designs the controller of a complex structure at the uncoupled modal level. At the same time, it utilizes only the modal position signal to provide a damping action to undamped modes. The paper presents the theory behind this algorithm when using first order filters to achieve the PPF effect. The optimal time constants of the filters are determined. The performance of the algorithm is enhanced by augmenting it with a 'time sharing' strategy to share a small number of actuators between larger number of modes. The effectiveness of the algorithm in damping out the vibration of flexible structures is validated experimentally. A simple cantilevered beam is used as an example of a flexible structure whose multi-modes of vibration are controlled by a single actuator. A piezo-electric actuator is utilized, in this regard, as a part of a computer-controlled active control system. The performance of the active control system is determined in the time and the frequency domains. The results are compared with those obtained when using the IMSC, PPF with second order filters, the Psuedo-Inverse (PI) and a Modified Independent Modal Space Control (MIMSC). The experimental results suggest the potential of the proposed method as a viable means for controlling the vibration of large flexible structures.
